the one thing that yesterday heard from a lot of people as people were very sad, watching what's happening there in case they will get in the car. people were very sad to see harry traveling alone katie. there was a lot of sadness and yet people young and old, i spoke to people in harry had not traveled -- with his brother. or his uncles, and so i think that you could see the four that is too beautiful for the people there. the other thing i've been hearing from a lot of people, when we talk about what kind of king king charles iii will be, what might help him reach a younger audience and resonate the way that his mother did. everybody said it seeing the younger royalty. seeing more of the new prince and princess of whales. it acing their brothers together. these four are -- popular katie. they are so much more popular then came charles has ever been. and so i think this will do an unbelievable amount to kind of

not promote, i don't want to use that word. but to really reassure this country, that the monarchy is what they believe and what they want it to be. jacket all, though they are getting in the car and the prince of wales is waving. here you see the cheers, i'm just giving them a shot. what an extraordinary day for these people, they were coming katie. >> they are getting in the, car walk about and they spent a good deal of time talking to people and they're all getting in the car together. hopefully, when they go back to windsor castle, they continue on talking. or able to get a relationship -- >> acadia reminder to for our audience, both families have had houses, have cottages on this estate. within kind of a five minute

walk of each, other it's one of the things that we were talking about last week when harry and meghan came over to the uk. came over to, europe there is speculation about if they were staying at their cottage. if they would see kate and will a lot. i think that has been an answer, the four of them are right here together. and you see here katie, all of the aides carrying flowers. >> they both have, children there are cousins who i am sure would love to get to know each other. you can see all of the aides here as molly was, saying the staff marius caring the distance. arms full of flowers that people would love. i think that is just not even close to all of, them there are so many people in the crowds carrying bouquets. why do we vote for the queen. i just got a text from an american friend of mine, not a crier saying that she cried at

the site of william and harry together. i mean even among the most cynical of, us it is nights to see a family come back together. it is nice to see healing. >> alex again, everybody wants a happy ending. >> of course they do, princesses and princesses, kings and queens, castles and fairytales katie. and molly, that is what it's all about. also julie and andrew, for all of you want to reset we have just passed the top of the hour, a couple of minutes ago. and katy is joining us there from outside buckingham palace, i am alex at msnbc world headquarters. we have the extraordinary pleasure of watching katie, what for the last mere hour i guess about 45 minutes. an unexpected walk about there in windsor. we do we know that it is a two point 64 mile long road that they embarked upon. speaking to the well-wishers and those assembled on both sides of that royal long walk
10:04 am
if you will. as we saw them that the beginning coming out and keeping our speculating on how long that was and how long they might be walking. they've not taken to the cars, after giving it a good old you know hip hip, hurray effort because they did put quite some time and they're walking and speaking to as many as they could. a lot is going to be made of this particular thing that we have seen here. unexpected and quite welcome in the eyes of most i am sure. and the fact, katie they are making the point that molly is also accentuated with the fact that harry and meghan do up access to more cartridges there on the winter grounds. the prince and princess of whales now live on the grounds there. their children started school on thursday, the new school in windsor. that is the reason for which kate was not there in balmoral. she did not go with prince william to the queen side. the queen's bedside as he rushed there. she wanted to be mom to those

three kids on their very first day of school. so we embark on this new hour with really an exciting and hope full-time. we hope that we see these four together, once again. the fabulous foursome as they were referred to before meghan and harry took off and left officially their royal roles within the family there to the united states. settling that took california katie. >> that is, true i called him the fearsome foursome. the fabulous, foursome thank you for correcting me on that. molly, is still in the crowd and she's been able to talk to some people and i think it is worth hearing because it has been such a somber past few days. and this is a moment that brought smiles to the crowds faces. it's amazing. >> smiles, unexpected smiles katie. what is your name? what is your name?
10:06 am
these are two kids why did you come here initially today? >> just to pay our respects. it's a huge moment for the whole country. >> what did you get? what did you see? >> i saw all of them, we were right by the barriers. >> she shook prince harry's hand. >> what was that like? >> it was really good. >> what does it feel, like it's such a somber moment. we have course and national mourning but seeing all four of them together. seeing the two brothers, what was i like for you? >> i think i was really special, i was really surprised the four of them were together. and, yes that is quite emotional i think being a bright and seeing them. those two brothers, side by side. >> do you think that healing is actually in the works? >> i don't, know i don't know what's going on. behind the scenes but it's lovely. it was really nice to see. >> did you see william? >> did you, wave did you get
10:07 am
close to him? was that exciting? >> thank you guys so, much i appreciate. it there are lots of other people around. to we do, did you guys see that. and parents, lovely kids and parents. why don't you guys have flowers, did you come to lay them today? >> yes, we also should carry's hand. >> you shook his hand, what is your name? >> my name is maya. >> my name is mateo. >> maya what was that like? >> it was really exciting. we came to lay some flowers down and then we saw the royalties were coming, that was really fun. >> what is it like to be in this moment, as a parent, as a family of national mourning? to explain to the kids what has happened, the loss of this country but then to have a moment like you cannot wipe the smile off your face in the napa moment like this? >> it's hard to wipe your smile off of face at a time like this. some of the britons very sad times, and it's meant everything to everyone in this country. >> you can feel both things at
10:08 am
once. >> you can, he's get to three miles away just to see what was going on today, and we couldn't believe that we saw terry and megan. it was fantastic to see them. >> did you see all four of them to? >> yes, we saw four then we saw harry and meghan and kate and william on the other side. >> that is pretty exciting, i appreciate your time. thank, you buy have a good day. by. guys, if you bear with me, they're a lot to people here who are feeling lots of things. who do you belong to? what did you come to old? why did you come to do today? >> we were further down but we wanted to meet them, it was very crowded. by the time to got to us, they drove off. >> can you try to explain, we are speaking to nbc an american audience. trying to explain the complex feelings right now. to live in this country, to
10:09 am
obviously be feeling this loss. but then to get a day like today. we did not emerge in all four of them to be together. i think that was the queen's last wish. >> i actually think that she said you guys need to reunite as a family. but >> she knew something was happening, that was her role. >> we have spoken about that so much, what do you think? >> i love my queen. mama's been really upset, i can hear it in your voice. she has been really upset. i think it completes, that they needed to be together. as a family walk. -- i think you are not alone in the weather. megan or you know, they need to catch up. >> thank you so, much canadian alex we will send it back to you. . >> and the time we have been
10:10 am
speaking at the time you've been speaking we just saw prince charles drive-by. i am sorry king charles drive-by the real standard was on the front of the car. he drove quite slowly did not get out of the car as far as i can tell unless he is doing so. a little farther down the mall. he drove quite slowly and the people in the crowd here cheered and waved to him. and they are still appearing down the mall. to see how far he is going and we got a little more indication of what can charles's schedule it's going to be for the next few days. he will be doing quite a bit of traveling. including traveling back up to scotland. but tomorrow morning on sunday, here we can see it looks you know like you will be getting out of his car. and talking to people on the mall. we thought he might do this a little bit earlier today.
10:11 am
it appears he is doing so now. fall is one little bit thinner up there. maybe is actually going into st. james palace. he is going to say jim's palace. >> you talk about the, truthfully has to mean and spirits. lest we forget that his dear mother passes away. he immediately assumes this really heavy mantle as the king of england. hasse delight of public appearances, you have to wonder in the quiet of the stillness and the late night or early morning hours before he starts taking up that role publicly. how you must feel, i think he is probably very grateful for those that are cheering them on. it is helping him go on with the kind of dignity. and must be afforded to the king of england. joining us now is katie nichols, she is a royal correspondent with vanity fair. she is a royal correspondent with vanity fairshe is a cost ot

dynasty. -- queen elizabeth's legacy and the future of the crown. as well as harry and megan live, lost and love. katie welcome, it's awfully good to talk to you. i'm sure you were surprised as the rest of us. no doubt happy to see the fab four as katie and i reaffirmed to them. making that walk about there in windsor. i am sure to the delight of the crowd of course but i think to the delight of many who cover the royal family like you. >> yes, it was one of those unexpected moments, actually being in a quite detailed media briefing. just minutes before this happened, we were expecting that prince and princess of whales. of course they now are william and kate. to do this walkabout, we were not expecting that duke and duchess of socks. except we know the prince and princess of whales who extended invitations to go into that walk about and now you have to think of this geographically. harry and meghan were over a
10:13 am
cottage in windsor. the whales recently have moved to windsor. there is not much distance between them but actually there's been a huge distance between them. as we all know, i think when we saw pictures of prince harry leaving balmoral the morning after the queen died, on his own. looking i think more miserable than it ever seen them looking and all the years i've been covering this royal family. it did not look good. and wherever this olive branch has come from, from the whales, is i think we look to be very grateful that there has been this opportunity for them to come together. wasn't so long ago that i was commentating on the funeral of the late duke of edinburgh. it is great concern that this family rift would overshadow the funeral. and it was cleverly handled and the strategic placement of the brothers. but seeing is that funeral was, over prince harry flew straight back home and let's hope that there is some time for talks,
10:14 am
for some beginning of a rapproachment. it certainly i've heard when your commentators saying that you know the queen's wish for them to be reunited. this rift has caused the late queen and off a loss of pain and upset. so yes, great relief that we have seen them together. an expectation i suspect that we are going to see more of the suspects this over the coming days. and as i said, there is time now. there is time for them to spend some private time together before the funeral in the 19. >> when you say that we will see a little bit more up the sussex pardon me. over the next few days, what is your anticipation of what that would look like? i don't think it's been so carefully planned now for decades but what should we expect? >> at the moment we don't know which members the royal family will be going to scotland. we know the king in the queen and consulate will be traveling to in edinburgh, that will be
10:15 am
happening on monday. i'm not sure about other members of family, yet i think we need to see who is going to be where. we know that the new could have a very busy schedule. we are traveling around the united kingdom. meeting his new subject having obviously important state meetings, and as for the prince and princess what we await further announcement but this is the longest period of time that harry and meghan will have been in britain since they left for america. and you know i would imagine and i think the scenes that we just saw now stood should suggest they're not going anywhere in a hurry. they will not be anywhere in the funeral, there will be a part of all of these events i'm sure leading up to the funeral in some capacity. as i, say we are late further details on that. there will be time behind the scenes for them to actually spend some time together. >> julie montesquieu by count i
10:16 am
know has to leave, julie my friend i don't want to have you dismissed and go off without first of all, thanking you for your time with us over the last hour. just asking for your final thoughts before you take off. on the extent to which you think these two brothers, specifically those two can come back together, do you think there is a specific hurdle that potentially needs to be going over before they can really come to being the brothers and having to close ties that they have leading up to the rest? >> let's remember that phrase, time heals. and i think we are seeing it here. you know they left as katie was just, saying they left sussexes very angry a couple of years ago. things have come out, interviews, podcast about how unhappy they both were. we never heard from that cambridge is, apart from that
10:17 am
one sentence that william said when he was will leaving. and they are saying we are very much not a racist family. that is all really heard and of course from the late queen, recollections may vary. that is the extent that we have heard from the royal family as far as saying anything about the sussexes memories of what is happened. and time really does feel. and for the prince and princess of whales to put up the all of branch to say we are about to greet the crowd. we are about five minutes away from each other unless through this together and our grandmothers are stein and more importantly it's about seeing the two brothers together. and i think both megan and catherine, for them it's about bringing the two brothers together. that is what the public, once that is what the world wants. these are princess diana's children. they lost their mother at that
10:18 am
young age. they were so incredibly tight and you know, families do go through this. of course to do but we always hope that they can come back together and hopefully that is what we are seeing here now. >> i think julie that you said something very wise. their time heals all when you think about the level to which the queen consort has been embraced by so many in britain. for 25 years, ago even the years proceeding, the death of princess diana. she was hardly that. you look at the way she is being embraced now, the new carrying have-ing said in his first speech about calling her his darling wife. and i think a lot of people respect that position that she holds now. you were right julie montesquieu, thank you so much for your time. i know you have to take off but we have always glad to have you on the podcast. over to you, katie outside buckingham palace. >> much exchange, of a bit more
10:19 am
on the schedule. king charles schedule of the next few days. the schedule. kingtomorrow he's meeting with e commonwealth secretary general at buckingham palace. it's important because there are questions about whether the commonwealth breaks up further, under his reign just last year of barbados broke off completely. not using the queen as its figurehead any longer, there are real questions about what australia will do, what canada will do. and some of the other nations. on monday, he and his wife the queen consort are going to travel to westminster hall to visit both houses of parliament. we expect to hear him say some things there. and then they will be going, all the way up to edinburgh, he will expect the art of honor. the ceremony of the keys on the forecourt of the palace. holy roodhouse will follow, he will attend the prayer service and reflection for the life of her majesty, the queen. at st. charles cathedral before
10:20 am
returning to hollywood. you will also have a audience with the first minister followed by an audience of the presiding officer of the scottish parliament. again, important because there are now questions about whether there will be another scottish referendum. things are changing in this world and changing for the united kingdom. from there, there are certainly more than to come including the funeral and other ceremonies like the -- schedule is very busy for this next ten days. hard for somebody is going for the loss of anyone under, life let alone the mother while also taking her place. becoming kink. let's bring in nbc news correspondent, matt bradley. matt, we have just seen amazing scenes today. we started the day watching king charles be proclaimed in
10:21 am
the throne room of st. james's palace for the very first time in history. nobody has seen that but for a small group of advisers, it's never been broadcast live on television. not to mention the ceremony that we have seen throughout london today, and across the united kingdom. >> that is right, katy when we saw this morning from the case, the new canaan that's kind of an echo of what we saw generations ago. one generation ago when the queen herself got her coronation. it was the first coronation ever to be broadcast on live television. that was considered radical, transparency. walter back of the great victorian essay, we cannot shine the light upon the magic. the magic is what you are seeing now. this is about the royal family really does best. it really is the reason it is around. this looks like a lot of pomp and circumstance and it is.
10:22 am
this is the kind of things that really does unite this country. that is what we will be seeing the next couple of days with the king, as you mentioned. he'll be making a journey not just to edinburgh, scotland and northern ireland as you mentioned. he'll be trying to hit every four of those countries, england, scotland, wales and northern ireland that are a part of the united kingdom. driving them altogether. as you mentioned, maybe making an end run around any efforts toward republican republican sentiment that could be rising up in some of these places. for those royal watchers, amongst the audience and if you're watching right, now you almost certainly are. you can follow to moving targets over the next more than a week. it's going to be making himself, controls as you mention. you will be traveling around the country, and then the other thing to be watching for is going to be the body, the casket. of the late queen and that is going to be lying in state for four full days towards the end of next week. ahead of her funeral, behind
10:23 am
me. that will be in westminster haul it is just below big ben. what you are seeing right now. it will be there for four days. surrounded by pageantry and symbolism as we don't know yet. the palace hasn't, said they weren't able to estimate how many worshippers are going to be filing past the casket of the lake weiner nose for days. four full days of public observation. that before the queen and then moved across the street to westminster abby. or they will be a funeral about which we knew was going to be not this coming monday but the monday after. now we have full confirmation from the, palace that we will have the funeral in more than a week. and then her majesty's casket will move to windsor castle, where she will be entered and st. georges chapel, alongside of her husband. a lot to watch in the coming, days both just pure pageantry
10:24 am
and the politics on the side of king george as he tries to make a physical effort. a geographic effort to unite his kingdom. even as everyone is mourning, the palaces said he will continue to lead this nation in grief for his late mother. of all of the details that have just come in to the belief over the past hour or two as you mention. the new confirmation of the schedule for the next few days, all of it seems to be following exactly as it was laid out. what operation with the cooperations london bridge. this has been planned for years. the only change that i can, see from what i had heard and we heard earlier that if the queen was to die in scotland, her casket would make its way down to here in london. by train. now the schedule that was just announced and we don't know why has the queens casket traveling by air to the north hold. outside of london here. not sure what that change was made but again, all of this has been in the works for a very long time. katie? one small change in a very,
10:25 am
elaborate, celebration. and mourning of her, live matt bradley thank you very much. as these days unfold, we witnessed the strange mix of mourning, as i said celebration, the united kingdom and the commonwealth also face new and unique peril. joining us now is clive irving, former managing editor of the sunday times in london. we are getting to that a little bit with matt bradley there clyde. and talking about the schedule that king charles has over the coming days. his physical appearances in wales and scotland. northern island, and the like. what is happening behind the scenes? >> well i have covered to earth shattering national events. the death of churchill and now this one. and it's interesting that both of them were gigantic by chronic figures. the similarities and there are many dissimilarities. -- never got to be --
10:26 am
hello? . >> i think we have lost the connection clive. continue? are you there? >> yes i am here. hello? >> talk to me about the commonwealth and whether it stays as it is or we start seeing a peeling off of nations. what might happen in australia? what might happen in canada? >> yes well i have spoken to somebody in australia yesterday. who's leader of the republican group. and they always said the as long as the queen was alive, there is no question of the republicanism. returning in australia, now it's a completely different game. in australia, you have a new government which is going to hold a referendum.
10:27 am
and the next term. if australia were -- great commonwealth countries, it would be quite significant. i hear no such thing going on in canada i have to say. i don't think the canadians are there yet. the reason why australia's because it's a very different country and the last years of the queens rain. it is much less white and much more international. and it's demographic, the caribbean is another huge question. i think there's a inevitability about the caribbean. they caribbean a shuns have made up their mind, once the queen was gone, it did not want to have a head of state as the english monarch anymore. they don't want the center of the lives to be based on london. that doesn't mean they can't continue as members of the commonwealth in another form. there are advantages to that. so i think with a shadow of those two things, of australia and the caribbean, likely to
10:28 am
break away. that is going to be an immediate priority for king charles third. to address that trail and to see if he can do something to repair it. otherwise, the issues, the other breakaway issues and a way or more serious and are more local in scotland's have a referendum to break away. that would be the most single, significant break from the united and what makes united kingdom the united kingdom. that would be in the historical terms, very serious. it is hard to gauge the spirit in scotland at the moment. i know that the previous leadership of the scottish nationalist party said they were committed to the queen as head of state as long as she was there. and now, nicholas surges ahead of the same party does not have that commitment. they are i think prepared to have a referendum. we can't imagine what it would do to the concept and united kingdom if the top was lost. the top half, that is where balmoral is. it's one of the places where
10:29 am
the queen was most at home. in fact i think in an extraordinary way, over the last months of her illness, what the queen was very anxious to do was to measure out her energy and conserve it. so in the end, she can get a she always, did the scotland in august for the summer. or she felt that might be one of her last month alive. and then factual chief that end and settling very strong about the scottish connection. which underlines an important how the loss of scotland would be. >> the telegraphers are putting that sources are telling them that king charles might consider gifting balmoral back to scotland as he slams down the monarchy. when came charles was still prince charles, when he was in barbados as its celebrated its transition to a republic, he acknowledged the appalling atrocity of slavery. and colonialism, and it was
10:30 am
something that william and kate when they visited the car made caribbean when they met in person to protest. there are questions about that today in the celebration on the morning and celebration of her life in the morning after a loss. it is being spoken about, there is a somewhat ugly history to the english umpire. >> well that brings us to charles ii, charles the second was the guy who started the trade the transatlantic trade business. by transferring the royal african company, they ship the purse slaves. a lot of the wealth that was taken out of the caribbean islands and came into london and financing industrial revolution and finance the british empire was blood money. i was struck by the fact that william and kate did not seem to have been schooled and that history. and this reflects not just on charles but on the management and the household and the members of the royal family.
10:31 am
it's unforgivable but that kate and william were exposed to that situation. where they were i think and mostly unaware and take it by surprised by the strength of feeling about the obligation and the reparations required to write the wrong. you can never write that wrong. but to correct and make some recompense so the enormous and extended prolong cruelty of slavery. even after technically ended, in 1832, by then they had established a system of government in those caribbean colonies. which is based on white supremacy, and the social order in which white people could gain ascendancy. and get enough money to run businesses. it's taken all that while to get to a point now when there is some chance of changing that. that is why the momentum is so great that these countries were wronged in the end. i think it's irreversible that they will break away. >> climate is alex wood here in
10:32 am
new york and i guess that is a subject that perhaps with the and mission and the introduction of meghan, the duchess of suspects. who is a biracial american, it was something that might have been particularly a brought to the forefront. she was never shied away from talking about issues about race. it is something the british people have had to face, they made that point that you are surprised how will and kate did not seem to have a sense of schooling. and that area and it was something that no doubt will continue to be of conversation and future repercussions for reparations that are made. that remains to be seen and i do want to ask you what we've kept our eyes on for the last hour plus. which was a surprise and seeing those for william and kate, and harry and kate walking together. and now prince charles the new controls and yesterday in his first speech. they don't pay homage to both
10:33 am
of his sons, i would love to play for our viewers one more time what he said specific to the two of them. the first time he addressed the commonwealth as the new king. here is that cliff. the >> with catherine beside him, our new prince and princess of whales will i continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the margin to the center ground. where vital help can be given. i want to also express my love for harry and meghan, as they continue to build their lives overseas. >> clive you know how well and choreographs everything would be under these circumstances. was there any slight to be taken by the fact that harry and meghan were not lauded as extensively as we leave indicate, or is it just that the fact is they have chosen to
10:34 am
not be a part of the working royal crew now. and so that was rather seen as an olive branch. he mentioned them, mentioned his love but nobody should infer more to that. , as if there was a slight. >> that was a very powerful scene today, when the fad for appeared. anonymously, powerful a great piece of media management. it drain the capital of poison out of the story. at least temporarily drained it out. and, away i think the story is over baked in over promoted. there was a genuine rift there but it doesn't mean that as your previous guest said that time can heal this wound. and now i am hoping, the intention is there on the path of king charles. this should happen. i am hoping that they can mend the rift because i think that the incompatibility of harry and meghan in the royal family was discovered almost too abruptly. they felt that there was some
10:35 am
kind of not just racial but alien pressure against them. and that was partly because i think that harry and meghan were, it reminds me in a way of the way that diana had a moment when she decided and barely exist by leaving. and they had that terrible moment by deciding that they could only survive by leading. so the question is, now can they come back and still survive as a successful couple together? i think some of what meghan has, done she lit the candle about racism inside of the royal household. that is not been fixed, that is still a serious problem. there is not enough people of color, the royal household does not reflect demographic of the country. it does not respect or reflect the future of the country. does not reflect the hopes the country has, that king charles
10:36 am
iii will make a significant difference of that. and i just hope that what we saw, today miraculous actually, that that is not a fleeting thing. some everlasting. >> i know harry and meghan have established meghan savage to the tabloids when i was here for the wedding a few years ago. i was speaking to a young girl of color who said that meghan made it seem to her that anything was possible. her acceptance in the royal family made a lot or as the young girl, british citizen. and i cannot help but wonder how much of a loss it was for the british public as a whole. also people of color here. to see her savaged in the way that she was. to see this alienation and the allegations that the two of
10:37 am
them have made. that their baby skin color might have been an issue. >> yes, a lot of factor here to that meghan is a very professional woman. and she is very american in that way. and the male dominated culture of the royal household doesn't like that kind of terms that they would use. pushy, a pushy american. they don't like pushy americans meaning, they don't like professional people who work hard. and a lot of that be kind of pills who work inside the palace work about from 9 to 12 and then take the rest of the day off. and megan was very impatient with, that she wanted to see a new work ethic. maybe a work ethic a strong as the queen as herself, which was not followed by other members of the royal household. and i think there was not just a racial thing that the anti-american thing, which never be underestimated created. a strong feeling of resentment not somehow american culture and manners are too vulgar to
10:38 am
be accommodated within the palace. and i think that meghan would never encountered that kind of combination before. the combination of perhaps she was wrong skin color. most of, all that she was a very strong willed, professional, independent woman and the same thing happened to diana. diana was not in the same sense of professional woman. she had to learn that kind of hostility. and i think that meghan, was probably smart enough now to realize that she can navigate her way back into that situation and avoid. that she could only do that and harry can only do that if they are understood as a successful couple which they are. and this normal about that she made him do. it you hear all of the time in the british press, harry does something, she made him do it. which is a criticism of harry's own. which is appalling really because he's a strong, independent, very strong military record. don't forget this, he had a very strong military career, he
10:39 am
