11:03 am
he said it has been washed out. we have seen with our own eyes, other roadways washed out. we have seen communities and even inland, that are completely flooded over and also there is this concern over a levy. possibly having broken. showing a tweet that the sheriff's a partner directed us to hear, in sarasota county. i believe we have the street, we can see right here. the image on the right or want to direct you to, we can see there's an arrow there. that appears to show what are going over the top, of her levee. if that is in fact happening, that would suggest that yet another community may be flooded out. we know from the sheriff's department and early morning hours, they started they got a 9-1-1. they started making george or knocks and shots to try to check on people. i asked if they have an idea if

i'm hearing here in charleston. ribed as ti see the damage and devastation in florida, yes i did get impacted by it but it has not been anything close to what they've been dealing with. this route is about five minutes ago was completely cleared but you see city crews have been working pretty quickly to quayle's remaining roads. -- we know the power at one point in the area was out for about 100,000 people. has now been restored, car outages in the few thousands of people in this area. that's not to say charleston was spared from the storm. it was yesterday around this time when we know that hurricane, category one hurricane ian made landfall about 60 miles from where we are now. and charleston, we're getting 70 mile an hour wind gusts. they were seeing flooding in many areas, especially in the downtown area. and there was about 24 hours ago, i was reporting the police department.
11:13 am
charleston police department was hunkering down because and the conditions that they were experiencing. you get a sense that folks here, we are prepared for it and they did not get the strong effect that they were expecting so the situation is cleaning up right now. folks are cleaning up right now but the cleanup that they have to deal with as much less and then they once feared when they saw the storm barreling their way yasmin. >> certainly, amidst what we have seen take place from north of charleston all the way south obviously to the absolute destruction we are seeing in parts of florida. jack brewster, thank you as always my friend. once you go back now to florida once again. fort myers to be specific which is one of the hardest hit areas in the state. a little bit east of where we saw a list standing. joining me now is the city's mayor, kevin anderson. mayor anderson, thank you for joining us on this. cannot imagine what your community is feeling today. just a few days now after the storm has passed through. the images are just devastating. talk to me about what you have

been seeing there so far. what your community has experienced? >> so you know, actually fort myers is very lucky. while we took a direct hit, we did not sustain the damages nearly what fort myers beach, sanibel, matlacha and -- sustained. we dealt with some wind damage and flooding. we have had now reported loss of life. the people in fort myers, the ones i've had contact with are in a good -- very thankful that it was not worse. and they are praying for their communities around us who suffered much greater loss. >> so describe to me specifically what we have been seeing and fort myers. we were showing images as you are speaking of fort myers beach. which had absolute devastation and a wipe out after the storm passed through their. it seems like you guys as you said got a little bit more lucky.
11:15 am
what this situation, think about the cleanup now post storm in your area. what lies ahead for you? what are the challenges? >> so our streets are already been cleared and majority of them are open. our city crews will be picking up the debris. seven days a week until they are done with it. the power is slowly coming back on, our biggest challenges as water. our water plants are without power. we have lost the internet system that helps us monitor the water system. and we probably have anywhere from 12 to 1:24 leaks that we have to first locate. and isolate and repair before we can really let the water start flowing. >> yes and i were looking at images of fort myers, a heck of a lot of damage or to say the least. even by saying that you guys got lucky. of, course you convert images we saw fort myers beach, we can
