she would be becky, and tom sawyer. and she would be in the carousel. she was the daughter who the father saying you will never walk alone to. >> bridget's brother, doug blackwell. >> was she dramatic? just all the time? >> she was a natural. she had flair. >> niece, nicole, remembers hearing the story of how her aunt was instantly smitten with a bill. >> i do remember her saying, you know, i met him when i was 16 and i thought he was the most handsome man i had ever seen. that she was just, sort of, compelled to him. >> and that was it? >> from the day that they met. she said, i just remember feeling a spark. he's just wonderful. >> they married and eventually moved into this home on peach pine crescent. a quiet suburban street outside of toronto. bill worked in management for one of canada's biggest grocery trains. >> he was a natural leader,

very deliberate in his thought process. everything. he was a thinker. >> i don't think there's enough people out there like that. >> that's why he was so impressive. >> brigitte left acting to pursue a career in education. eventually becoming a school superintendent. >> she was kind of fiery and a real bit of a rebel. and, a real seeker of justice. they would bring their different talents together and compliment one another in the best ways. you really got so much from the two of them when they were together. they were such a great team. >> and while they were passionate about their careers, they adored being parents. they had adopted their son caleb when he was a baby. >> he was a handful. and he never sat down for more than five minutes in a row. he was constantly on the go. >> how are bill and brigitte's parents? >> they were greats. they were very present. >> bridget was the

disciplinary. and the stricter of the two. well bill was the common one. the peacemaker of the family. >> caleb could push bridges buttons. but he could never push bills buttons. and so bell would be the buffer. bill would be the guy who would calm caleb and brigitte down. >> the harrison's loved spending time with their large, extended family. niece, kay blackwell, remembers the big get togethers in the air harrison's home. >> i grew up thinking that everyone isn't invited. it's something i took for granted. it's just how it was. >> stephanie grew up next door. the harrison's welcomed her like one of their own. >> being from a very small family with not a lot of siblings, and, some culls. we were literally like another drop shun in their life. an extension of their family. christmas day wasn't just with four people. christmas day was now a 24 people. >> caleb and stephanie, both only children, became best

friends. >> after high school, what did you want to do? >> caleb always wanted to go right into the workforce. he did a lot of shipping and receiving staff. and he love that. because he was so gregarious. and always chatty. and in any office place, he always adopted a new group of friends. >> in 2000, when he was 27. caleb told stephanie about one of those friends. a coworker named melissa. >> what did he say? >> he said i've got this girl. i think she's amazing. i really want you to meet her. >> melissa was seven years younger than caleb. a local girl from toronto, who came from a law enforcement family. >> she was lovely. she was very outgoing. so it just seemed like, where has this girl been? it was a great match. >> caleb and melissa eventually married and had two children. a boy and a girl. now grandparents, brigitte and bill relished the roles as nana and papa. >> i think they felt very proud of it. >> they were really into these grandchildren? >> infectious. sly yes. >> but the happy family began to unravel.

after five years the other, caleb and melissa could not see eye to eye anymore. they separated. caleb did not take it well. >> it was just devastating to him that this marriage was ending, the potential of not seeing his children on a daily basis. >> caleb moved back home with his parents and shared custody with the two kids with melissa. he was stressed, and he was drinking. >> it was with a group of friends from work. and he had been drinking. i think he was trying to probably forget about everything that was going on. and, obviously just wasn't making clear decisions. >> after spending a long time at a bar, he got into the car, intoxicated, and slammed head on into a taxi. killing the driver. >> did he talk about the guilt that he felt about the man dying? >> he talked about it quite a bit. living with that devastation? was awful. >> caleb ended up serving time in jail for the accident. with his parents support, he

got through that rough patch. but it wasn't the end of troubling time for the harrison's. danger was looming. and with inside their very own house. april 16, 2009. brigitte harrison was working late. she arrived home around 9 pm. prepare to have dinner with her husband, bill. the house was unusually dark. >> and sure enough. she found him. in the washroom. hunched over. >> it was only the beginning of what would become years of agonizing loss. unanswered questions, and unrelenting fear. >> coming up! >> ambulance what's your emergency? >> my husband. i just came home from work and i saw him collapsed on the bathroom floor. >> okay. is there has been awake? >> no he's not. i can't move him. >> she did the whole thing. are you sitting? down what are you doing? are you sitting down? and i was like why? >> what happened to billy harrison?

>> ambulance, what's your emergency? >> my husband. i just came home from work. and i saw him collapsed on the bathroom floor. >> okay, is there has been awake? >> no he's not. i can't move him. he's wedged against the wall between the toilet and the door and everything. >> just stay on the lineman. >> i can't move him, he's not breathing. >> okay. >> i can tell, oh my god. >> by the time paramedics arrived, they confirmed what she had dreaded. her husband of nearly 40 years was dead. brigitte called bill's sister, liz galant. >> she did the whole thing of all you sitting down? what are you doing? are you sitting down? i said no. why. and she said something happened to bill. >> lives rush over to her brother's home. >> i don't think i believed anything until i saw the ambulance on the street. and the fire department, and the police. >> the pull police department was handling the case. an officer lent -- to bridget. >> she told me about not being

able to do cpr. her whole coming home, arrival, it was dark, she can find him at first. and then she found him in the locked bathroom. >> police had by now cordoned off the bathroom. and taken a statement from bridget. >> i don't remember either one of us paying panicking. we were calm and cool. no screaming, no crying. it was a strange behavior. >> after examining the body, the pathologist concluded that bill died from cardiac arrhythmia. in other words, his heart stopped. family and friends who are left with so many questions. for starters, at 64, bill was a fifth guy. >> and i remember thinking, this guy has got every type of health kick going. he makes smoothies every morning for him and his wife. he's so active. members of the why. plays basketball. what do you mean he died? and i'm thinking, is this one of those case scenarios that you read in the news?

the most fifth guy, they're running to k a day and then drops that of a heart attack? >> these things do happen. but the harrison's niece nicole, found it hard to grasp. >> absolute disbelief. >> and this is the man who is the picture of health. >> yeah, absolutely. there is just no way to understand that somebody like that just kills over and all of a sudden, is dead. >> it was also unbelievable to bridges brother, dog black bell. especially after he learned some odd details. like the fact that he was locked in the bathroom. despite being home, alone. >> what was he doing in the bathroom with the door locked? i don't know about your family. but if i'm the only man in the house, i am not going into the bathroom and locking the door. it just does not happen. that sort of, didn't seem right. and when brigitte said that she had to jimmy the door open? i, it did not make sense to me. >> and initially, it had been a

red flag for police to. they wondered if bill had purposely locked himself in there and died by suicide. but they ruled that out, and close the case. >> so then, a death makes sense? >> amanda triple death could make sense. it seemed odd. and it seemed weird that he was in the bathroom. it seemed weird that he was in the position that he was. >> but at the same time, what other explanation was there? >> we didn't know. >> were you satisfied moving on morning bill as a natural death? >> yes. brigitte asked me to do the eulogy. and there was no suspicion in my mind that it was anything less than god calling him home. >> but brigitte had doubts. an eerie sense that what happened the bill inside their home was not natural. she confided in close family friend, mike harrington. as they were driving together to bill's funeral. >> and i turn to bridget and i said, well, i guess we have lessons to learn here.

and she said what lessons do we have to learn here? bill was doing everything right. he did not die naturally. >> didn't you start to say who did it, and why? you just didn't get into that? >> it seemed that it was so out of left field. who in the world would want to harm this man? it just did not make any sense at all. >> brigitte shared similar suspicions with her brother, dog. >> what did you tell her when she had these thoughts? that something seemed a little suspicious? >> all i said was it could be bridget. i don't know. but nonetheless, brigitte had time to think about it. she mold on it. the rest of us are trying to support her. >> and it was a tough time for the grieving widow to say the least. not only was she dealing with her husband son and death. but her son caleb was serving an 18 month jail surfaced for the drinking and driving accident. >> it devastated her that her son is a prisoner.

and will only be allowed to come and view his father in his prison uniform. and then not be able to see anyone else. and not be able to hug him, support him. or he her. so they had to deal with this death individually. on the own. >> a few months later, caleb was released and back home with his mother. ready for a fresh start. his license had been suspended, so he couldn't drive. but his mom was there to take him to work and help with the children. >> she has her son home. the kids have their dad back. >> yes. >> so where things starting to get back to normal? >> i would say yes. except, we have the issue that's the buffer is gone. that bill is not there as the peacemaker. and, so of course, there is friction. >> between brigitte and caleb? they fought? >> not so much fought. but just, it wasn't that warm

and happy place that you want to walk into all the time. >> harrison's niece, kate, remember i christmas after the uncle bill died. how the house felt so very empty. >> of course it would never be the same again. we went through the emotions but we felt lost. >> but a few days later, and early spring 2010. she visited and brigitte again. it was around the one year mark after his passing. and the first wedding anniversary. >> i want to see her and the phone rang and it was someone looking for uncle bill. and, and brigitte just started to cry. she said i'm sorry, he has passed away. you can just see how raw her emotion was and how much she was suffering. it was heartbreaking. >> and there was more heartbreak to come in the house on pitch plank cross it. because just days after kate's visit, she received a harrowing phone call. >> i just imploded. i just, could not believe.

it was an april afternoon around 3:30 when an eight year old boy, just home from school, discovered his manna lying at the bottom of the stairs. he notified a neighbor who called for help. the peel, regional paramedics were quickly there. >> we got a call over the radio dispatching that they have a code for us. which is the highest priority call. >> paramedic, patrick, and his partner jumped into the ambulance and went to a home on pitch by crescent. >> so signs are blaring, driving how fast? >> as fast as we can. 100 miles per hour. >> and when they went there, the front door was open. the hurried inside and saw a woman lying at the bottom of the staircase. >> what was her position? >> she was flat on the floor with her head placed on the first step and her arm was up on one of the stairs, i believe. >> so she's on her back? >> she's on her back. yes. >> they learned that the woman was 63 year old brigitte

harrison. there was nothing that they could do to save her. she was gone. >> did you see anything that was consistent with a fall? >> the only thing that we saw was bruising around the throat area. but it was an assumption that maybe she could've fallen down the stairs. >> but bruising around the neck? doesn't that seem? >> doesn't sound consistent with the fall, no. the position that she was founded? could she have fallen down the stairs? heard her neck and then got in into the position for injuries? potentially. >> caleb got a call at work. rushed home to his son and began letting the family know. >> i get a phone call from caleb. saying. sit-down, brigitte is dead. my son found her at the bottom of the stairs when he came home from school. >> when he called me he said, i think they think that she has fallen down the stairs. >> the police had arrived and worked warning off the home. and they love the sister,

listeners, inside. >> caleb comes to me and says i could come in. and they had not moved the body so i could see her. >> still in the foyer, she realized she was standing just feet from where her brother died a year earlier. now, she was puzzled as she looked at brigitte's body. >> the first impression was that she had no phone. >> why did you think that? >> because of the position she was in. i think if you fall, you fall forward. unless you're catching yourself or something. but. she was laying back on the stairs. right near the bottom. it just didn't look like a fall down the stairs. >> let's called her daughter nicole. >> what is that moment like? getting that kind of news one year later that now year and has died? >> it was even more traumatizing. there's a whole other level of disbelieve that pick something like that would have happened. and it was shocking. >> no one in the family could

process the tragedy. >> how could this happen twice? in such a short period of time? to one family? >> i couldn't reconcile it. i thought maybe she had died of a broken heart. i had seen how devastated she was on their anniversary. >> miss kate blackwell had spent time with her and just days earlier. saw firsthand how the pain was still so raw. >> and i thought, maybe we it weekend her to the point that she slipped and her heart is shattered. >> when you say weekend? like her body was frail? >> possibly. not eating. not eating right. >> true, vigilant had been despondent since her husband's death. but nicole was skeptical that this was an accident. >> there was nothing believable about of perfectly help the person, having a catastrophic fall down carpeted steps. i don't buy it for a hot second. >> she and the other family

members could not help but think back to bill's sudden death one year earlier. the things that they have found unsettling at the time. >> it was just a monkey story. it seemed odd. and it seemed weird that he was in the bathroom. it seemed weird that he was in the position that he was. i think we try to live with this contradiction. and, needed to be there for caleb, for the kids, for bridget. >> now, the family push police to investigate both deaths. and the chief pathologist was concerned to. he wanted to exuma bills body to further examine his injuries. only it wasn't possible. his body had been cremated. >> and then the crime scene is gone? you can't go and re-examine a crime scene that doesn't exist anymore? >> that's right. >> or a body that doesn't exist anymore? >> given that your uncle was cremated? >> yes. >> it must be so frustrating. >> it must be frustrating because where a pretty regular family.

>> although it was hours after he had learned of his mother's death, he appeared calm. >> i just want to say, i'm sorry for your loss. i understand it is a hard thing, and there's other things you'd rather be doing. >> the investigator wanted to know about bridget's daily routine. >> tell me about? >> a normal day? >> yes, what your mom's normal routine would be. >> she's up early. five in the morning-ish. kids and i get up at 705. then, she's cleaning up, and she has breakfast around 20 after eight. then we leave, and drop the kids at school. from there, we go to work. >> caleb explained, because his license was suspended, his mother did the driving. >> then she goes home, and last year, we were dealt with my father's passing. so, she has been, still, doing

fallen to her death. they asked caleb as if his mom had health problems. >> no medical history? >> not that i was aware of. like i said to the other officers, the slight case of diabetes. >> other than that, she has never been hospitalized? never fainted? >> no. >> police had scoured the harrison home, looking for clues. so far, they had found no evidence of foul play. no unusual marks on the stairs, the walls, the banister, and nothing was disturbed inside of the home. they found no signs of forced entry, either. in fact, they told kayla, the doors were unlocked. >> without have been normal? >> yes, it would've been open. most of the time we left it open, because mom would take us, didn't come right back. it's not a big crime area there. >> it's a nice neighborhood. >> a lot of people have lived there for a long time. >> the dorsal stopped at night when you go to bed?

in brigitte harrison's death investigations were almost immediately done and caleb harrison. all to tell him about bill's death, but also to talk to him to make sure that we were able to tell the children themselves. >> that was on a friday. the weekend passed and there was still no sign of the children. when monday came, brigitte hoped her for a good news from the school. >> i called a school on monday, the kids were not in school. i went back by the house, nothing there. tuesday was our day. she was in breach of the order when they're not in school on tuesday. that, the flags just really went up then. >> brigitte barely had time to grieve for her husband. instead, she began a desperate search for the children. >> she had talked to private investigators. she had gone to child find. then there was a country wide bulletin to pick up them. so, i notice throughout canada to look for them. >> it took seven months for authorities to find the couple and the children. they were living 1100 miles

away in nova scotia. melissa was arrested for parental child abduction. the kids will return to live at their grandmothers house. >> she goes to get the kids and bring them home. must have been such a relief to get them back? >> oh yes. very very much. happy to have them back. >> then, in 2010. about a year about after bill that. melissa pleaded guilty and was going to be sentenced on the abduction charge. bridget was supposed to give a bridge or impacts story at the hearing. she never made. it she died at the bottom of the stairs. >> brigitte that is the day before the hearing. >> so that they would not have to go to court at that time. >> doug said, after brigitte died. he told police all about the fights over the children. >> i gave them the information that i thought that they needed. i'm just saying, look. there is only a couple of people in this world who it makes any sense to be involved with this. >> so he wanted police to talk to people connected to melissa.

>> who's angry with bridget and bill? it's them. go talk to them. find out what they were doing. to this. >> but he says his suspicions fell on deaf ears. then, three years later. in 2013, caleb was murdered. stephanie says the timing was no coincidence. >> melissa was asking to have the kids 50% of the time. caleb was reluctant to do that. >> the issue was never resolved. after his death, melissa was awarded full custody of their son in daughter. >> what are you thinking happened? >> i'm thinking absolutely that there was conspiracy between melissa and christopher. i had no doubt in my mind that this is the first third time. the first time was abducting the children, the second time was getting rid of that cold hearing with and brigitte and this third time was again, about the children. her mission was to get those children. and get them away from caleb so

not just hit caleb's murder. but the possibility that his mother might have been murdered as well. >> evidence gathered through this inquiry, open new avenues of investigation into the death of brigitte harrison. >> at this time it was a investigation that the family had given. >> the peel police department was extremely good at keeping the family group informed. they had meetings, where we were called in and they said they are worried certain things that we can tell you, the certain things that we can't tell you. but, you know, take our word for it that we are on this. >> you felt confidence? >> i was very confident in their dedication to it. >> so it went from zero to 100? >> absolutely. guaranteed. >> police suspected melissa and

chris were behind caleb's murder. but needed hard evidence to make the case against them. so several days after caleb's murder, a police officer went to their house posing as a garbage collector and picked up their trash. they found a pair of running shoes. reporter, amy dempsey. >> was there anything suspicious about this in the moment? >> i think it was suspicious that these appeared to be new shoes. >> why would someone threw out a new pair of running shoes? some officers working the case happened to recognize them from walmart. >> so they went to the nearest walmart and they learned that there had only been one purchase of those shoes recently. the night before caleb was murdered. >> and that walmart was at the same plaza where chris and melissa told police they went after the ball game. the plaza where they said they bought food at the p2p and subway. and when the officers looked at the surveillance video, there

was chris buying those shoes! >> and not only that. they had a debit card purchase on chris's debit history for the exact amount of the shoes. >> oddly, in their interview. the country's bold never mentioned going into walmart to buy the shoes. which suggested they were trying to hide something. and, there was something else discovered in that trash. a pair of gloves. >> on the gloves? they found the dna of both chris and caleb. so, victim and suspect. >> this is now placing these two together in some form? >> yes. it was definitely strong evidence against chris. >> and police had even stronger evidence. chris's dna was found under caleb's fingernails. but remarkably, there was no arrest. >> why did they not arrest chris right away? was it about the dna match? >> i think that they held off because they wanted to build their case against melissa. they had pretty strong evidence

against chris and in caleb's death. but they did not have strong evidence against christian bridges death. and they did not have direct evidence against melissa. >> in september of 2013, a month after the murder, melissa and chris move the family to nova scotia once again. by now, the couple had six children. four of their own, and the two harrison's. the police kept a close watch on the family. as officers built their case. setting up what would turn out to be as elaborate staying. >> this is a really undercover operation? >> there really was. there was a lot of officers involved and they were pulling out all the stops at this point. >> and pizza that operation was a fictional character named, sue andrews. >> sue started emailing melissa. and, just offering help. saying that she was a woman of means who came from a group of ladies who like to help people

out when they were in distress. and, had heard about melissa and all her kids. and wanted to do what she could to help them out. >> did melissa buy this to? >> at first melissa was a little bit standoffish. but then they got to talking back and forth in emails, and, soo started offering gift cards for groceries and best buy. things that they needed. and, at the time, melissa and chris were in really need of money. >> so police are basically kept fishing melissa? >> yeah. police are trying to keep this connection between sue and melissa to see what can come of it. and one of the things that comes out of it is, they help them with rent in this house. the east coast of canada. >> and the gift kept coming. so gabe melissa and her family a free weekend at a music park. even played for teen tickets to get them there. but the weekend was a ruse. police wanted the family out of

the house so that they could move in and launch the final phase of their nova scotia takedown. >> while melissa and chris were at the amusement park for the weekend, police were in the house setting up wiretaps everywhere. >> krista melissa had no idea what was going on under their noses? >> they had no idea that police were in the house setting of these wiretaps. >> but even with the house bucked, police know that there was no guarantee that they would catch the couple saying something incriminating. >> because people who may have committed a crime don't just sit around talking about what they did in the past. especially when they're busy taking care of six children. >> police had yet another plan to try to prompt them to talk. with the wiretaps in place, they began sending melissa more emails. and this time they came from a person claiming to be a victim liaison's officer. who passed on tibbets a belt the murder investigation. >> it's strange because melissa

was a suspect at the time. but she and chris seemed to believe that they were getting these emails because they were the parents of caleb's children. and part of a greater victims family. >> so these emails were sent to get them talking? >> the emails were sent to get them talking. what >> did they start talking about? >> it got them talking about the case. police would often send the emails strategically, at times when the children were in bed because obviously they couldn't be talking about this when the children were awake. so the conversations were respired, often. and lead at night. >> some of the recordings were barely audible. police had to listen over and over. like in this conversation where the couple seemed worried about the investigation. >> what are you thinking? >> i'm just scared. >> police sent one email which mentioned that there was unknown dna under caleb's fingernails. that seemed to get chris talking about fighting with someone. was it caleb? >> he did grab me by my neck. >> and melissa appeared to

reassure him that not much of his dna would be left on caleb. >> even if, by chance, he did get you on the neck, by chance, that would be a miniscule amount. >> police are listening to these wiretaps. listening to the conversations day and night. >> and the wiretapped seemed to pay off. one night, what they heard chris say. that appeared to point to caleb's murder. >> i went in there, and the -- cower didn't fight. >> in another conversation, they appear to be talking about bridget's death. at one point, it sounds as if chris believed he had an ironclad alibi. >> you're gonna try to tell me, while i was out running errands the day that she died. i somehow got into bridget's house, and i killed her. and then i went on and carried on with my day. without acting weird? that's someone with no one criminal background was able to kill somebody and make it look like a natural death? >> police listened and for over

pathologist in ontario wrote a report saying that what the autopsy actually showed was that bill had been assaulted before he died. >> remember, bill's family always had doubts that he hadn't heart attack. so to them, that report revealed one more infuriating blunder. when they believe had tragic consequences. if bill's 2009 autopsy showed that he had been assaulted, it would've triggered an investigation. and a killer might have been caught. >> where was the corner? where were the police? why else was this man in this position in the bathroom with these injuries. and, you know, things like marks around his throat? >> with this new conclusion,, prosecutors had enough to charge chris with the murder of bill harrison. they allege that chris killed him during a confrontation over the children. >> how do you feel when you learned that his death would be a part of this? trial? >> we lost everybody by 2015.

six years after he'd been killed. that's when we heard that this charges being brought. six years later. there is only so much satisfaction that you get from knowing that it took that long and to get an answer to the question that you have been obsessed with for years. >> in september two, 2017. melissa and chris went on trial. >> this is one of the most complicated cases i've seen. three deaths in one trial. two defendants. different charges. >> it was an extremely complicated case. very difficult case for a jury to take on. >> chris and melissa were both accused of the murders of brigitte and caleb. chris alone was charged with the murder of bill. the couple pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. >> what was the prosecutor's theory of the case? >> prosecution argued that all three harrison's were killed. at key moments.

extra days of the children. and once he got there, they began to struggle and he killed him in a struggle. >> when it came to melissa, her attorneys argument was simple. >> melissa's defense argued that there was really no evidence against her. that the only thing at worst was that she was an accessory after the fact. >> the defense attorneys also challenge all those months of wiretaps. they pointed to the hundreds of pages of transcripts which had missing words marked unintelligible. >> so, the defense picked apart the transcripts. all of these wiretap saying that the meaning changed when you took into account that much of the conversations were marked as unintelligible. the >> family came out in force for the trial that lasted for long months. it took the jury for days to reach the verdict. >> you just feel the tension in the room. and the jerry foreman stood up

and gave his verdict in a whisper. >> caleb was guilty of murdering bridget and caleb. not guilty in the murder of bill. >> melissa's verdict was next. guilty in caleb's murder but there was a hung jury and bridges. >> what was your reaction to the verdicts? >> i was pleased that both of them had received a first degree murder conviction for caleb. because, that said that they were going to get 25 years with a chance of parole. >> but what is it a hung jury on? >> i truly believe that melissa was the mastermind of everything. i think that she setup chris, and it was gonna be extremely difficult for police to make a murder charge against her. >> and even though melissa and chris would finally be put behind bars, nicole believes that others should answer for the harrison's death as well.

>> i think the really important story here is that it's not just the actual killers who are accountable. there are people in the police departments, coroner's office. they are accountable to. how on earth did two more murders happen after uncle bill? >> what would you say to all the people involved. from the medical examiners office, to police department? >> if everybody had done their job the way they should have. there would've been one death. and brigitte and caleb would still be alive. >> the peel regional police department right declined to comment for a report. it conducted our internal review of how the harris and deaths were investigated. but did not released findings to the public. the family has asked for a broader inquiry into the how the police the corner, and the -- handle the cases. >> is the trial over? yeah? are we still pretty suing
