days away. candidates are scrambling to make their final pictures to voters. as a country we are confronted with serious issues. including the volatile economy. war in the ukraine, weakening democratic institutions and a spiraling effects of climate change. and yet many republicans have narrow their focus to a few familiar and divisive topics. from sea to shining sea, gop hopefuls are digging into a very old bag of racially tinge tricks. to paint a picture of a country ravaged by out of control criminality. there is little evidence to support these claims and even last to connect the supposed crime waves to democratic candidates. this fall or discontent follows
2:02 pm
a summer of overreach. many of the same republicans applauded a supreme court ruling. allowing states to outlaw abortion and then doubled down on it. by calling for a national ban. many americans are understandably outraged. to see a right, they cherished for half of a century. and in the blink of an eye and the true political crossed of the gop further arrogance and hypocrisy on the topic is just beginning to materialize. we have a lot to cover and the perfect guest to talk about it so let's get started. joining me now is new york congressman hakeem jeffries. chair of the democratic caucus. congressman, thank you for first of all for joining us. i want to go right to, it i would like to hear about the democratic message to voters in
2:03 pm
a moment. but, first i want your thoughts on how republicans are framing this race. take a look at this, ad put out earlier this week by louisiana senator jon kennedy. >> look, if you had cops because of cops, the next time you get in trouble colic racket. i am john kennedy, i approve this message. >> now if senator kennedy cared about jackson is they, he would know the real problem is not crack again. a drug the right as associated with the black people since the 1980's. it is opioids, nearly half of all drug deaths in the state are caused by opioids. according to the latest data from the louisiana department of health. and these cases are not being driven solely by street crime.

74 opioid constrict, prescriptions are being written for every hundred people in the state. but none of those facts matter to senator kennedy do they congressman. 's >> they, don't get even and reverend. great to be with you, the democratic mission for america will be the continue to defend family, his freedom and the flag. it is quite unfortunate that the republican position right now is anchored in fear, fake news and fraudulent ideas. and then kennedy at is an example of trying to distract the voters because republicans over the last two years really have not articulated a single idea to address the challenges facing the american people. and at the same, time we have been getting big things done, from the american rescue plan in the infrastructure investment to the inflation adjustment act and other pieces of legislation are going to lower cost and create better paying jobs. allow for safe for communities.
2:05 pm
more needs to be done, we are prepared to do that work. >> let's stay with the topic of drugs for a moment. this, week president biden announced that he would pardon thousands of americans convicted of marijuana possession at the federal level. as the head of the national action network, i applaud the move. but remain deeply concerned about the lack of justice on the state level. even in states that have legalized marijuana, there are thousands of people and many of them black and disproportionately black. who have had their lives ruined for nonviolent offenses related to the drug. which is why the president is doing it's important. very important. it's their role congress can play in addressing this. and how do democrats continue to make progress on the issue. in an environment when anything that they do will be used by republicans to accuse them of being soft on crime.

president biden has done. >> let's turn to efforts to hold the house. there is a feeling to some of that, democrats gain some positive momentum. after the supreme court overturned roe v. wade. as the election draws closer, races are tightening an illinois. democrats are now worried that they could end up losing a seat as the party continues to struggle and districts outside of major urban areas. what are you hearing as you talk to your fellow democrats across the country right now? >> well we have to make sure that the elector understand that this is not simply a referendum on the moment that we may find ourselves in. two of course as a whole host of challenges coming out of the covid-19 pandemic. but it's a choice between democrats who will continue to get big things done for every day americans. but people over politics and extreme maga republicans, they

2:09 pm
of republican candidates are 2020 election deniers. which we have to conclude is a feature and not a book and republican politics. something meant to fire up their political base. what is the message meant to fire up the democratic base at a time in this cycle. when enthusiasm in turnout is critical? >> everything that we care about is on the ballot. democracy itself is on the ballot. liberty and justice for all is on the ballot. reproductive freedom is certainly on the ballot. leaning into better paying jobs and economic opportunities and every single zip code is on the ballot. we cannot afford to turn the keys of the house of representatives or the senate over to these extreme maga republicans who are going to take our country backwards. thank, you as always congress.

from brooklyn new york, i might add. now to a local senate race with national implications, joining me now, democratic candidates for senate in wisconsin. mandela barnes, lieutenant governor barnes thank you for joining us tonight. and for weeks out for midterms, right now, you're at a very close race. to unseat wisconsin incumbent republican senator ron johnson. who has targeted you with a barrage of negative campaign ads. many of which fixate on crime and the estate. of course when it comes to certain types of crimes, like forcibly breaking into the u.s. capitol to overturn election results. the senator has been far less punitive when describing the insurrections. then there was this exchange and last night's debate between you and the senator. take a listen. >> whenever i see a police officer, i got them and say

personally and i've lost to many friends and i care to count. i mentioned that last night on the bay stage at the top of the crime came up. because it's deeply personal to me. it's why i got involved in a public service in the first place. people like ron johnson refused to do anything to deal with the carnage taking place with the city space all across this country. and with that being, said the opportunity to support public safety, law enforcement and crime permission initiatives will be the american rescue plan act. that would allow suit vest 100 million dollars in public safety. he voted against it because he wanted to play politics. what we are up against is something i've never seen before. the senators lying, they're trying to distract, he's blaming lee for sapphire nothing they do with. they are supporting millions, tens of millions of dollars into this race. false, misleading, negative advertisement. that's why i need help for folks to get over this hump. we have to raise enough money to keep our message they keep ron johnson accountable.
