vegas showgirls is telling her story. that is coming up. but we begin this hour with donald trump, who will speak at another rally, just a short time from now in arizona. where early voting begins this wednesday. trump was in nevada last night, campaigning for his gop midterm candidates. he rallied against his mounting legal battles and continued to push the big lie about the 2020 election results. he also brought up the january 6th riot and boasted about crowd size. i want to bring in vaughn hillyard in arizona. von, what exactly did donald trump say when he was at that rally? and what has the reaction been there? >> i think, erin, the context here is important. that is that last night he held a rally in nevada for the down ballot candidates. usa today candidate as well as their gubernatorial candidate. today, he is here in arizona. we're just a couple hours from now he will be standing on the stage alongside the likes of dan valid candidates for the

u.s. senate, governor, secretary of state, attorney general. he's been with the other statewide candidates in ohio, pennsylvania and michigan over the course of the last month. for donald trump, continuing to galvanize the power structure around him is important and crucial. and convincing the greater electorate of his influence is important, that's why i want to let you hear his remarks last night about the j 6th crowd size that was on hand there. just shortly before joe biden's inauguration. take a listen. >> they never want to show how massive the crowd was. you know the biggest crowd i've ever seen? january 6th. and you never hear that. it was the biggest. and they were there largely to protest a corrupt and rigged and stolen election. it's the biggest crowd, and you never hear that. and you see very few pictures of, it but they are there. that was the biggest crowd i believe i've ever spoken to. >> this is a man who is openly

suggested he's going to be running for president in 2024. and he has built a power apparatus around him, through the portal of these midterms. he has gone around the country, endorsed key candidates in their primaries. most of those candidates won those primaries. now, it's donald trump who is working here ahead of, in arizona, early ballots go out, just three days from now. he is trying to prove that trump republicanism is able to win general elections here. we are just about 30 days away from election day here. and that is where you see donald trump working around the country to convince the electorate that not only did he win the 2020 election and that there was fraud in that election, which was not true, but essentially he's found a power structure of statewide candidates to back him up and stand on stage with him as he lays claims to being fraud. but also his stature as being the head of the republican

party today, erin. >> and ivan, big crowds at rallies on small boxes at mar-a-lago. thank you so much for that report. we're also keeping a close eye on the january six committee as they gear up for thursday. to give us a preview, member and congresswoman zoloft joins me now. thank you, congresswoman, for being so generous with your time on the sunday. what do we expect to learn this thursday? i know you've been doing a lot of work in this time where there hasn't been a committee hearing. but what can people expect to hear? >> well, we have been working throughout the summer, interviewing additional witnesses. we've received a huge amount of documents from the secret service and have learned some additional things. so, we plan to present what we found out, working through the summer. i think it will shed some light on the events of the day and the events leading up to it. the connections between the

extremists and the republicans. so, we hope it will be a worthwhile hearing coming up this week. looking forward to it. >> i know you have been very busy. during another appearance on this show, you did suggest to us that you didn't see ginni thomas as a crucial witness. have a no appeared before the committee, do you still feel this way? and can we expect to hear from her during thursday's presentation. >> we did have a lengthy interview with her. i wasn't able to sit in on all of, it because i was on the floor of the house. yet i've been able to read to the transcript. i don't think she was a key figure, necessarily. she had a very it's taken views. we all know that there is no evidence of massive fraud in the election. but she has a belief system that she apparently still

holds. although she did also expressed some doubts during the interviews. so, i would say it's important we talk to her, because of the email exchanges. but i don't think she was a major player in this, personally. >> that being said, even if he was at the major player, would we hear from her on thursday? >> well, we may. i think the plan at this point is, since we worked so hard through the summer to basically object to utilize the testimony we've received over the summer, which we've done in prior hearings and i think that's been a useful -- whether the witnesses sitting at the table or on video. it's good information. but we did not video her interview, so it would be transcripts if they were going to use that. but we have plenty of other information as well. >> okay.

is there a reason there wasn't a video and the other people were? >> it was just to the agreement reached with her. i think it was suitable from all sides. >> okay. if you could tell us a little bit more about some of the other members of congress who we may hear from. elaine chao, mike pompeo. >> we did interview a number of cabinet officers and one of the issues that we wanted to explore was the discussion about the 25th amendment. obviously, there was a discussion. but we know that it was not invoked. one of the charges for our committee is not just to find the fac and let the public know about, them but also make recommendations for potential changes in the law. the 25th amendment allows the cabinet or such other bodies as established tune pocket. the congress has never acted, and the question is should we.

or, in the alternative, should we use different procedures? because there is not much procedure outlined, it's a bit of a chaos. i bet it does provide more information for the committee, as we ponder that part of our charge. >> can we make the assumption that the committee will not hear from some other members of congress who were subpoenaed? for instance, kevin mccarthy, jim jordan, scott perry and andy bags. and obviously, we'll ask about the former vice president and former president himself. >> the members of congress have been asked to come and have been defiant. i think that is really not the right thing for them to do, if they don't have anything to hide they ought to come in and let us know what we've been able to piece together. in some cases, their role from other witnesses. but the committee, of course, has to make a determination on

what to do about that refusal to participate. and of course, they're not the only ones. mark meadows and others have refused to come in. that is a disappointment, but we are putting it together anyhow. with other witnesses and other information. and really, when i think back, this is really much worse than i expected when i started this. we all knew that the president had cemented the mob and whipped them up and sent them off to the capitol. but some of the other things we've discovered are really worse than i am imagined. so, it's been a very interesting experience. >> it has. i think what's on the mind of everyone right now is, will you make a criminal referral to the doj? >> we will be considering that. the chairman asked a subcommittee, made up of lawyers on the committee, to

review all of the potential actions. whether they marry that a referral. so, we will be working on that with the staff. and then, so far, every action we have taken has been by consensus. my guess is that that would continue. it's been a group of strong willed people, but who listened to each other and reach consensus. so, that has also been a good and interesting experience for the congressional committee. >> it has been a long experience, and a long process. can you give us an idea of the timetable of when we can expect to wrap everything up and get a report? >> select committees are established only for the life of the congress, and this congress and at the end of december. so, the committee will be no longer in existence. a report, we are writing it down, i report will be done. a publication of other

materials, any decisions we make on referrals, all of that will be done before the end of the year. >> not ahead of midterms though? >> well, we are having this hearing and we could, depending on how quickly we could reach a conclusion on referrals, it's possible that happens. but the midterms are not governing our work. we are just going through it as we can. and in some cases, for example, the huge volume of information from the secret service just takes a while to get through that material. we're finding some very interesting and concerning things. >> okay. california congresswoman zoe lofgren, thank you for being with us. and enjoy your sunday. >> thank you. >> still ahead this hour, the latest on the herschel walker allegations of the impact on his georgia race against senator raphael warnock. >> it's up to georgia voters. and it's not up to him, it's not up to me, it's up to them.

warning of nuclear armageddon, officials continue to say there is no imminent threat from russia. but that threat is still very present. >> i think joe biden's right to just get this country ready for the fact that you are dealing with an incredibly dangerous human being in russia. the war is going badly, and you just can't predict what he's going to do next. >> and nbc's josh lederman is in wilmington. josh, those remarks that the president made were made at a fund-raiser. is the administration walking back a bit on those remarks? >> a little bit, erin. they are certainly getting blow back from people who are concerned that, even if president biden wasn't intending to escalate with those comments, that it might be seen differently from moscow. and that president putin might see this as an escalation by the united states, in this conflict. this morning, we heard from former secretary of state, mike

pompeo. telling these comments by president biden reckless. we heard retired admiral mike mullen on television, saying biden needs to avoid making these kinds of comments. and really back off and try to get back to private negotiations with the russians to try to really lower tensions. that has left the white house trying to walk a fine line between wanting to calm down tensions, reassure everyone that there is no new u.s. intelligence or information that led biden to suddenly have a new assessment about something being imminent. but also not wanting to undermine the president or suggest that he somehow was too alarmist in making those comments. listen to how white house national security council spokesman john kirby tried to thread that needle as he spoke to jonathan capehart this morning. >> mr. putin has been using this kind of rhetoric since almost the beginning of the invasion, jonathan. but, certainly he has been doing it a lot more recently. we have to take that rhetoric

seriously. it would be irresponsible if we didn't. so, we're monitoring it as best as we can. but i'll tell, you see no indication that mr. putin has made this decision to use nuclear weapons. and we see nothing that would cause us to change our own deterrent posture. >> the white house says they are continuing to watch that very closely, in case that changes. and certainty the u.s. has a whole range of different responses prepared if president putin were to decide to use a tactical nuclear weapon. but if you want evidence that the white house really is trying to calm things down right now, look no further than the fact that the white house is not even touching the story of this attack on that crimean bridge this weekend. they don't have any comment on, it certainly don't want to play into any notion of ukrainian involvement, foreign involvement, that could further inflame tensions. just as they aren't trying to get things to a calmer and safer place, erin. >> walking a fine line.

thank you so much, josh lederman. for more on this, i want to bring in retired four star army general and msnbc military analyst, barry mccaffrey. i guess there is some experts who say the only thing worse than putin is a desperate putin. do you think that he could be provoked a tape using nuclear weapons, because things are not going as he planned? >> i think john kirby put it the best picture on this issue, this morning on his interview. putin is clearly desperate. economically, russia is in serious difficulty. it's probably permanent they are a pariah nation, politically. the wheels are coming off the russian army. they are running out of smart you munitions and now just battering civilian targets throughout ukraine. they've lost tremendous ground in the east. and they are facing, possibly, losing 15,000 troops cut off in

a kherson pocket. so, he is in trouble. it is mobilization is a disaster. it looks as if they are publicly preparing the russians for the use of weapons of mass destruction. it is illogical, i don't believe he's going to do it, i think it's a bluff. but the president of the united states clearly has to take this into account as a serious issue to be addressed. >> so, you don't think he would do it. but we have to take it seriously. what does that mean for us? what does that mean for the region? >> well, i think the public collective voices of the european union, never mind nato, of his allies for the chinese and india on this issue has been traumatic. there's no good that will come out of this. if he crosses a nuclear threshold, what would the target be? i spent a lot of time in the

u.s. joint staff talking about nuclear strategy and targeting. i can't imagine what putin could find to usefully strike with a ten k t weapon. would be the city of kyiv and murder 100,000 people? attack a nato force? their language, by the way, on russian state tv is simply irresponsible. about attacking berlin, paris, london, and nuclear torpedo to watch a tsunami across the united kingdom. it's just not kind of talk. i think, largely, what putin is doing is signaling his distress. trying to warn the west to stop supporting ukraine. not going to happen. so, we are in a very tricky situation. cannot allow putin to use a nuclear extortion as a viable tool. if we do, the future will be

to deny all the allegations. all of this not stopping top republicans in the senate tom cotton and rick scott from agreeing to appear with water this tuesday in georgia. and a source close to walker's campaign, telling nbc news they are hearing from, quote, a lot of other republican senators who want to join him on the campaign trail. >> -- >> that is because those republicans see this race as definitive to taking control of the senate. nbc's allie raffa joins us now from atlanta. ali, what is the latest on these allegations against walker as we continue to see the gop senators agreed to head down to georgia and support him? >> erin, the walker campaign is laying pretty low. we haven't seen or heard from him since thursday, since before this latest round of allegations surfaced. and despite all of these latest october surprises, you see gop heavyweights rushing to the defense and support of walker. we learned that and our sec

chairman, senator rick scott, as well as senator tom cotton, will be on the ground here in georgia on tuesday, campaigning for walker. and in a statement nbc news, senator scott says in part, quote, i'm on herschel's team. they picked the wrong georgian to mess with, i'm proud to stand with herschel walker. that is because these republicans know exactly how critical this georgia senate race is to win it back control of the senate. because we know this is a 50/50, evenly divided senate. the stakes are very, very high in this race. this race is quickly becoming a party priority for republicans. a source familiar tells me that and irs staffers will actually be here on the ground in georgia, leading up to election day. and actually ad spending that was going to be used in a new hampshire senate races now being reallocated to here in georgia. but i have to tell you, erin, i've spoken with a lot of voters here on the ground. republicans and democrats tell me they are really unfazed by all of these allegations.

this seems a little bit like rank hypocrisy. i guess the biggest thing i noticed, especially listening to always report and some of the voters, how about we just listen to what the american people need. we keep talking about personal issues with the candidates and control of the senate. but there are people who are suffering and really want this country to come back together. what are your thoughts on just where we are heading? >> you saw when they came and went to the streets, he saw the interview with the guy who said he'd been voting since he was 18 years old. and he's really worried about this country. i think, if you take the labels of democrats and republicans, people are, in general, worried about the direction of this country. and you're right. why we can't just vote for the betterment of mankind, i don't know. but what we have at hand right now is you've got a lot of republicans vying for that seat. it is imperative that we get that see.

because they don't really care who it is or how they get in, they want them in because they represent everything they believe on that republican platform. all the things listed on the platform of the republican party. this is what herschel walker represents. >> or what he does not represent, that's what's happening. >> that's where we, are that's the problem. a lot of people who are republicans, some of them are having problems digesting that information personally. and saying, how are you going to represent us even though, personally, you look like you are against it? it's the same thing that happened when we had donald trump. even remember when we had donald trump and all the evangelicals, basically were holding their nose voting for him because of the supreme court. because of what donald trump has a republican represented. but they were having a lot of trouble voted for donald trump to. so, it's almost the same parallel. >> i guess, isn't there a bar or a standard that some of these candidates should be held

to? >> -- >> in essence, you are representing the people, right? you're supposed to be a leader, you are supposed to take -- you're not an average joe walking around, you are representing your state, your country. i don't understand why we can't have candidates who aren't so much in it for the power. and making excuses for themselves. where does this put us? shouldn't be a higher standard? >> as a political consultant, a lot of us were talking about this. and a lot of people, both on the right and left, don't want to run. it's very hard finding good candidates, because they feel like they dredge into the past. they go into your college, your high school, they go into, you know, a lot of issues. you can be 50 years old and married to three kids and having a great life and doing whatever. but they go all the way back and i think it is hard to find good candidates that are not

willing to put their own personal life on display. with that said, you know herschel walker, i think from the beginning, seemed like an ideal all american candidate. as he started chipping away at his past, it became a little tarnished. >> but what made him an all american candidate in the beginning? let's put the controversy in the allegations aside right now. what was his profile that made him so qualified to be in his position? and running for office? that's what i guess i don't -- just, once it is symbolic? i get that you had a great story, great support story. but that's not, that doesn't make a lawmaker. i don't understand. >> i agree 100%. you've got someone in his position, good football player. high name i.d.. if you want to get to the brass tacks of this, i raise political dollars for super pacs. one of the things you look for

residents of fort myers beach, one of the hardest hit towns in the state began returning to their homes over the weekend as well. let's bring in abc's stephanie stanton in the nearby town of fort myers. stephanie, talk to us about what you've seen today. what are residents telling you as things start to get back to normal? >> good afternoon, erin. i am here in the city, the town, of fort myers beach itself. the destruction and devastation that we are seeing, cannot be put into words. let me show you what's happening here. i'm going to have my camera man pan over to this pile of rubble here. this was what was once shockers bar and grill. you can see, there is absolutely nothing left. we have a picture to give you some perspective of what it looked like before the storm hit. once again, the destruction that is left behind after this category four hurricane made a direct hit or to this area.

we also understand that storm surge was about 12 to 18 feet. the same story is playing out over and over again within this town. we had a chance to survey some of the damage. what we saw was just incredible. i really have no words. i had a chance to talk to some people. i talked to a young man in pain. he lived in a house on stilts. and he was sitting on what was the foundation. that's all that was left. the house was completely lifted off and blown away. he also worked here. he has no job and no home. i spoke to another man, he says that he was taking photos of what was once a home that was recently purchased and renovated about three months ago to be an airbnb. that is also gone. this is the story here. there is currently no wanting water. there is no electricity. as you said, aaron, there is a staggered return that started this weekend. early this morning, we've seen people come back. they are coming back to absolutely nothing. there are several structures here that are still standing. officials are cautioning everyone to not go inside those

structures. right now, they say everything on this island should be considered structurally unsafe. that is what is happening here. it is a heartbreaking scene. again the, picture simply do not do it justice. the death toll at this point, we understand, more than 130 people have died as a result. most of those are over the age of 50 with their cause of death being drowning. that is what's happening here at fort myers beach, erin. we're going to send it back to you. >> i take that back, nowhere close to normal, not for some time. thank you for that report. devastating images there in florida. we are going to stay in florida. we are closely following polls. 30 days until the midterms. as part of hispanic heritage month, we are focusing in on the latino vote in the state. it will have a huge impact on the races for senate and governor. republican party made major inroads with the 2.5 million registered latino voters in florida in recent years. with donald trump seeing a 12%

jump in support from 2016 to 2020. now, fast forward to today. incumbent senator marco rubio is leaning democrat val is -- by about six points. support from latino voters is split equally between the two. and then the governor's race. republican ron desantis currently holds a six-point lead overall, latino voters are actually favoring democrat challenger charlie crist by eight points. joining me now is msnbc political analyst ferdinand. thank you for joining us on this sunday. let's go deeper into these demographics of latinos in florida. about 30% of cuba knows who tend to favor republicans, south american and puerto rico voters make a large portion of the population. they tend to vote democrats. has the most latinos nationwide. how strong is the republican poll on florida latinos now? really, how divided are latinos

in the state politically? the numbers are a little confusing. they may be deceiving. >> to answer your question, the republican poll in florida is very strong. the truth of the matter is, the republicans simply -- and the state of florida. when it comes to the hispanic vote. the democrats have any chance of ending these two statewide races, be it for governor or u.s. senate, they are going to have to perform a lot better with hispanic voters. the poll suggests right now. the good news for democrats, this seems to be a florida specific phenomenon, erin. the other 49 states that, you still see democratic support for hispanic voters. it's much higher. what it states like arizona, pennsylvania, and nevada. they are much more competitive. the states right now, in florida, as you said, the histrionic vote plays a porn role in statewide elections. it's one where the republicans are doing better than the

democrats are. it is why both republican statewide candidates have lead in the public opinion polls. >> aside from the republicans, as you, said hustling more, why is florida such an anomaly when it comes to latina supporting the republican party as opposed to democrats? >> well, unlike virtually every other state, the florida hispanic electorate, as opposed to being mostly consisting of those of mexican american origin or to stand, you have, as you talked about earlier, a large cuban american electorate which is much larger in florida than any other state. that cuban american votes has historically tilted toward the republican party. in spite of the gains that democrats play with the cuba vote in 2018. those have receded and gone back to the original norm. and that is what's really driving the hispanic vote more in the direction for republicans in florida. now, outside of the state, you

tend to see those inverse. mexican american support since much higher. in florida, you have that unique story which is, again, why republicans do better here with hispanic voters than they do in the other states. >> i want to ask, yo how big of a factor is misinformation? the orlando's said in the reporting that a spanish language radio shows have gotten away with calling democrats, quote, pedophiles and murderers who are in bed with the communist party of china. it sounds ridiculous. people are believing it. how big of an influence is this red scare rhetoric? >> aaron, it sounds ridiculous, it is ridiculous. the spanish language media in florida, especially south florida that is tuesday afternoon. that is an unrelenting assault of misinformation and disinformation that's happening. again, unfortunately, one of the things we've seen, the democrats have made political
