2:00 pm
>> good evening and welcome to politicsnation. tonight's latest moment of truth. right now, the democrats and both house and senate are
2:01 pm
racing to protect their majorities at the ballot box. and just 23 days left before midterm elections, the prevailing wisdom at this point is that a republican takeover of the house of representatives is certainly possible. among the likely consequences of the takeover, a congressional hearing is to punish democrats. and if some members get their way, and impeachment of joe biden. it caused a prediction for democrats in the senate. they're only slightly less dire. the loss of even a single senate seat or dash any hopes of holding or expanding their majority in that. leaving them with a another contentious evenly split senate like the one that they've been doing these past two years. it doesn't help that key senate
2:02 pm
races in georgia wisconsin pennsylvania and in nevada have tightened up. leaving democrats to question how the contest got and remains so close. it's looking like a complicated picture for the party no matter what happens. we are giving you a clear view of it tonight on politicsnation. and starting as always with the proofing guest joining me now is tina smith from minnesota. first of all i appreciate you joining us tonight. i want to get to some of the deeper implications of the upcoming election for the senate by starting a broadly. what must seven democrats prioritize should they grow or at least hold.
2:03 pm
thank you reverend, i'm so glad to be with you again. you are exactly right, these races are an optimistic. these races are highly competitive. democrats across the country are facing an onslaught of dark money. i've excellent candidates, an excellent campaigns. they need to keep fighting for the last few weeks could not be more intense. so, we need everybody to get involved. we have been incredibly productive with a 50/50 senate. i think it's been the longest 50/50 senate that we have ever had in our history. and what we could accomplish, if we were able to have 52 senators is really what keeps me campaigning as pass voting rights, let's go to roe v. wade. let's finish the job of childcare. into public safety, gun safety. there's so much work that we still have to do despite how productive we have been this
2:04 pm
last year or so. >> well the fight over abortion might be the issue that keeps democrats in the majority next month in your view? >> in my view the abortion rights issue is a pivotal issue. here's why. for women, abortion rights is not a political issue. it is a personal issue. it is an issue of personal freedom. it's a question on whether or not government is interfering in our own health care decisions. that's why seeking minnesota, people are mad about this. they are galvanized to make sure that their voices are heard and that's exactly what i understand is happening all over the country as people consider the fact that in the extreme part of the public and party, they are taking away what kind of health care they want. >> as i mentioned at the top political is our reporting this weekend that senate may be
2:05 pm
facing down another evenly split senate if democrats pick up additional seats in states like wisconsin. in addition to states like nevada senate democrats racked up winds over the summer. those winds were hot fought and won. is the caucus ready for that if the chamber ends up evenly split again? >> well i first have not given up nor do i think we should give up on adding senate democrats. instead of arizona and nevada, catherine cortez has a tight race. i just want everyone who is having a help. and the opportunities reverend sharp for senators i think
2:06 pm
they're very focused. we cannot give up on that. >> we know this weekend that former president barack obama ain't with georgia at the end of the month what does he bring to the trail and those particular races in your view? >>, well of course it has been great out campaigning with president boma. he is a powerful message or, is incredibly popular. i think he could really help all of us to bring home the distinct difference between democrats and republicans and these pivotal races. the extremist and the strength of democratic party. look at eternal he'll be in a neighboring state wisconsin. and of course in georgia to
2:07 pm
help senator warnock who is such an amazing senator. >> all right senator tina smith, thank you for being with us. joining me now is the congressman democrat of maryland and majority leader. let's take a break and we'll be right back after this.
2:08 pm

2:09 pm
2:10 pm
2:11 pm
for >> joining me now is democrat of maryland and house majority leader. congressman already agreed to have you with us again. let me go right to it. three weeks before america vote, broadly speaking as house majority leader facing down an election which democrats have long been expected to take a hit in the house. they're likely losing the
2:12 pm
majority. what is the consequence for america, if that does happen? what are the party's priorities if it does happen. >> well, first of all i don't expect the premise -- i think that we are going to win, they have said we're going to lose in new york but congressman ryan won that election. they said we were gonna lose in the first democrat 50 years. that was about a month and a half ago. and then kansas we were sure that the voter with a red state in the middle america vote to not allow women to make their choice on reproductive rights they almost 60 40 did the opposite. so i really believe that we're gonna win the majority. we're gonna keep the house and
2:13 pm
expand some of the house as well. if in fact it doesn't happen at a particular time for a real challenge to bring inflation down, that's where it's hurting our people. we've taken action to address it. unfortunately, our republican friends they have not supported that legislation that we passed. i think the american public think they want some stability as they voted in 2020 to have some rationality and positive policies that help them make in america. we want people over politics. that's what we've pursued. we want to lower their cost.
2:14 pm
the president talks about this, it's a worldwide phenomenon. no better paying jobs and safe communities. we passed legislation on both of the subjects. most republicans have not supported, that it's a shame. if they took over i think we will see a very negative time in america. great instability in america, this is not gonna help bring prices down. >> congressman, as we look at this midterm election we always hear that these are the most important elections of your life. but these are really important. we are dealing with democracy itself. last week many of us were captivated by nancy pelosi on january six. she coordinated the response to the attack on the capitol.
2:15 pm
already atlantic this weekend on the count of how republican leaders responded to the news at the capitol was under siege, the danger they themselves were and in no small part because president trump. i was struck to in politico that this immediate help to the pentagon would not be forthcoming. he then went and search for speaker pelosi and senate majority leader chuck schumer for help. the scene underscores what republicans knew and agreed to on that day. the man they defended for four years but not lift a finger to help them or his allies. instead they turned unsafe themselves and you are one of those leaders.
2:16 pm
what is your response to that part. >> have you are united in the anger, the, disappointment. we are trying to get the capital -- and forcing the law and saving peoples lives. we are getting us back to the capitol to our constitutional duty so we were together on. that we were together in the conviction that we would go back that day, that night to make sure that we did in fact finish the job that we are supposed to do constitutionally. >> sadly what has happened is we have gone from that night we were unified in opposition to be called an insurrection, a
2:17 pm
coup like action by the president of the united states in his followers to plant their views for the voters views. unfortunately, that is a rationalization of that day. i think the committee has done a show day-by-day, hour by hour and video by video republicans working for trump and general who testified for the committee that president trump did not careless intimately involved in the preparation, of planning of an execution of -- invited everybody to a speech, he incited them in that speech. he deployed them fight like hell and stop the steal. there was no steele, he

2:19 pm
people one of the major parties about what they saw on january six was a legitimate political discourse. we are headed for anarchy and chaos. i believe the american public responded positively and i think this is the second most important. i think 2020 was the most important and that trump was rejected for a second term. we could impeach him or get enough republican help to do so. very brave honest republicans that were coming to the emperors had no clothes. but it's not enough. and the election of november of 2020, the american people said that we do not want this to continue. this is not america, it's not a democracy and i think two years that our democracy is top. -- we're here to seal the deal
2:20 pm
with these midterms as you say. let me bring this to congressman, stephanie murphy and adam can zinger both set on the january six committee. the panel has yet to determine its next steps if donald trump does not comply with its subpoena. what can i do with the former president decides to run out the clock of the subpoena hoping the republicans take congress? >> it's very difficult because time is short. we're gonna treat him just as with what any other citizen that refuses to testify. we will ask if they be held in contempt and be ordered to testify. former president is not above the law anymore than the president is above the law. >> democrats are prepared to go to court if that becomes
2:21 pm
necessary? >> i think from my standpoint i haven't talked to the committee about, i don't speak for the committee and they obviously don't to make a judgment until they know for sure what actions former president trump is going to take, but yes i think that is an action which from my standpoint i want to be taken. you and i was talking worked around issues of racial inequality. i remember as you supported john lewis and the commemoration of the voting rights from independent bridge. you are right there with john louis. how give you new polling numbers, a new voting bloc for

democrats. there are more motivated now than ever to vote. this is a national poll commission of higher heights for america packed. a committee that works to have black women nationwide. they say the cost of living, inflation are the issues are most concerned with. they thought underrepresenting going into the midterms. giving up pivotal black women voters are, do you think the party isn't good enough job addressing the specific concerns that inequality going into november? >> we passed a lot of pieces of legislation, women and pay as you know. unfortunately hasn't passed the senate, why? a filibuster. we don't have the 60 votes to do that. we passed the voting rights act.
2:23 pm
every democrat i have supports it but we don't have the 60 votes that we needed to get that pass. we passed a bill on inflation reduction act. if that was caused, other costs. climate, cost energy cost. it's obvious why we're concerned about cost, we see prices for bread, milk, baking and other necessities going up. it's very substantial. people are worried about that. gotta bring us down. we passed a fuel act to bring down the prices and help fix supply chains. almost all republicans voted against it, it hasn't moved in the senate at this point in time. but in the inflation reduction act and the plan early in the

total spending for spanish campaign events. democrats outpaced some 3 to 1 on spanish language tv, radio ads this election cycle. but what is behind the narrowing between the two parties? what attracts the spandex to republicans when they aren't making the same investment in their community as democrats are? >> for one reverend, for a long time democrats have taken the hispanic voters for granted. they just assume that democrats are destined. did it assume that a latino community would automatically support the democratic party and keep joining the democratic coalition. well, it turns out that you can't take any voter for granted. you have to show up and ask for the vote. democrats now understand that they can't take that community for granted. and in this cycle, they are making big investments and some of these districts to try to win back the seats here and self florida.

there's a big race where those efforts by democrats will be put to the test. but for a long, time democrats took these for granted. republican started to show up and we're talking about the united states in a way that the latino can connect more with, opposed to democrats who tend to focus on immigration when they talk to the latina communities. that is been changing, but it's one of the mistakes that lets the erosion among the latino community. >> our senator identified at the black community being taken for granted. so, i absolutely understand that feeling. you know colin, sticking with you a minute, a state with a number is large for latino community, arizona. the party's nominee for government or stumbling a chance to defeat carrie lay,
