donald j trump released a statement on his social media platform that reads, in part, quote, u.s. jews have to get their act together and appreciate what they have in israel before it's too late. before what is too late? too late how? well, the tendency might be to dismiss his words as, oh, that's donald trump being donald trump. that exact instinct is what i want to start with tonight. what i want to challenge tonight. what he is saying is not normal. it is not okay. we should not shrug at this. we should not become numb to this. it is precisely because we have become numb to donald trump and his allies that they keep escalating their rhetoric, including anti-semitic rhetoric and the rest of us keep normalizing it. when we should have been demanding consequences for that kind of hate speech long ago. to be clear, trump didn't become an antisemite overnight.

the mainstreaming of anti-muslim hate. antisemitism, thankfully had always seemed off limits. like a third real. it seemed untouchable at least publicly. as jonathan change wrote in the new york magazine, for three quarters of a century, antisemites were locked out of major american politics are at least had to keep their bigotry quiet. now the door is open. so wide open in fact that trump has been joined by a head army of many trump all pushing the same anti jewish nonsense. only four years after the tree of life shooting, the republican nominee for governor in pennsylvania doug mastery ono has used the midterm election campaign his, own governor terrell campaign to repeatedly attack his opponent joshua pirro for sending his kids to italy jewish day school. last week, marjorie taylor greene and her jewish -- field yet another conspiracy that soros and the late pedophile financier jeffrey epstein was somehow financially linked. why and how? something to do with banks, of course.

meanwhile, the fellow gop member of congress paul gosar has openly attending and speaking at white nationalist conferences including one organized by accused hall of kosovo river. -- who went from threatening jews on twitter last week to once again this weekend making even more hateful conspiratorial antisemitic remarks in his media appearances. so, now is not the time to stay silent or to give the gop a pass on this issue. president joe biden recently called out trump's maga philosophy as a kind of semi fascism. for me, using that semi-as a little too generous. look, people can argue over the exact definition of fascism. the one thing that fascist movements across the west have had in common is this, they go after jewish minorities in their midst. that is the most common factor. understand what is going on here. these are not isolated or unconnected acts of antisemitic

to go more left more, populace, more progressive to win them over? >> i think what we need to do, i think bernie has pointed this out. talk about the economic accomplishments. talk about the things that have been done. just this weekend, millions of americans, hundreds of thousands of young people signed up on the treasury department, sorry, the department of education website to get their student loans forgiven. republicans are fighting against that. look, i know there is disagreement about the policy even within the party. here is the main point. republicans will be in a position of now taking something away from those kids. they have said they want to get rid of that student loan payback. sorry, the student loan forgiveness. there is -- that is something you can campaign on. republican candidates have said, as brittani pointed out, they want to cut social security. they want to cut medicare.

those you to be third real issues. ron johnson other people like that are talking about it. i think there are voters including some republicans who are out there who don't want their social security cut, who don't want their medicare cut. by the, way that has been a long time finish of a lot of republicans dating back to when i worked in the senate for harry reid and 05. when george w. bush wanted to cut social security. even with the republican senate, harry reid won. there are cory economic issues that democrats can one on and win. >> tim, despite you being a lifelong republican, you want the democrats to win in november and to keep extremists gop candidates out of power. are you one of those never trump republicans who is worried that the democrats are campaigning on too progressive of a platform to win over swing voters right now? >> i don't think so. i think it's an issue in a state by state basis, mattie. i think john fetterman is extremely progressive. he is running an aggressive campaign that makes sense for

pennsylvania. it makes sense for him. from a vibrant, a cultural standpoint, he appeals to white working class trump voters and certain parts of pennsylvania. i think that is smart. raphael warnock in georgia, i think is running more to appeal to my type of voter. suburban former republicans that voted for mitt romney and crossed over to vote for joe biden last time. he's running a campaign that speaks to them that maybe is moderate on issues in temperament and messaging. mark kelly is doing the same in arizona. i will cross over, tim ryan is an ohio. what worries me, when democrats won as a super liberal without trying to appeal to either of those groups. i'm worried about the and hazara governors race, the georgia governor's race, stacey abrams, both of them feel listless. i think if you think about the two types of people, the group jeopardy was talking about, the white working class voters who might want you to take on

pharmaceutical companies, the suburban typical former republican voter. you have to try to appeal to one of those two groups. you have to have a strategy. there are certain democratic's that feel concerningly listless. >> what is your response to that? >> tim is right, democrats need a strong message and can't be listless. frankly, you have racist right now. i think back to 2010, republicans should have taken the senate. they ran terrible -- including one proclaim she wasn't a wedge. therefore, democrats were able to hold the senate back in 2010. you have a similar situation now where you have maniacs running like doctor oz and herschel walker in georgia. yes, democrats have to run strong campaigns against them. you are seeing that with someone like john fetterman running on a very strong and aggressive message. you are seeing that with raphael warnock. i agree, running on strong messages. that is the thing, when democrats can campaign strongly on these issues, there are so

same location as leadership to make sure that i wouldn't be harmed because of the death threats i was dealing with. >> well, that is always worth pointing out to viewers who might not be aware of the threats you get. so, congresswoman, we know that republicans have downplayed what happened on january the 6th since the very beginning. also blame the democrats and nancy pelosi for their supposed inaction. yet, as you saw on the day itself and as the rest of us saw on thursday during the 16 public hearings, steve scalise and kevin mccarthy were right there. literally inches away from nancy pelosi as she is demanding on the phone that the pentagon and the federal government sent troops to secure the capital. they're standing right there. >> they were standing right there, when events unfolded and we were taken to that secure and disclose place, i was one of the first to arrive and then

speaker pelosi arrived. clyburn and then chuck schumer. scalise and mccarthy actually came to gather. they could clearly hear the speaker and schumer trying desperately with hoyer to reach governors in surrounding states. trying to speak to the mayor of washington, d.c.. trying to get anybody and everybody to deploy national guard to safeguard the capital, to save our colleagues, to stop our country from being decimated by these insurrectionists and destroying any stability our democracy could have. i vividly remember standing in front of the tv as the first images were being displayed as

the insurrectionists broke into the capitol with scalise by my side. him uttering these words. how shocking these people are animals. for him to then turn around and so fraudulently and so cowardly say, we have unanswered questions about the involvement of speaker pelosi. when he was in the room, has she desperately tried to save our democracy. urge any leader within the white house that she could reach to try to do something. to get the president to get these people to back off. to deploy the national guard. as you know, the mayor of d.c. does not have that authority. these people then went into a room until mitch mcconnell showed up. they started huddling with us. you could see them not do anything. the only republicans that were

in drafting the articles of impeachment. after two hours in, it became clear as we listened to the pleas that speaker pelosi, chuck schumer, hoyer were making, the president was not interested in stopping this insurrection. he was excited to see it go on. it became blatantly clear with the hesitation that we were getting from those that were under his leadership, you have to remember one of the things that many people might not remember is that a lot of the secretaries and directors were not actually sworn in. they were acting directors, acting secretaries. there was a lot of disturbance in that regard. i think the functionality of the trump administration is something that we often forget. >> last question for you congresswoman, you have been demonized in recent years as an

zeroed in on the issue of crime in battleground states like wisconsin and pennsylvania, the trajectory of those races shifted in the gop's favor. this playbook isn't new. a number of experts told nbc news the strategy seems particularly effective this year. the attacks have divided some of the democratic party to. put a lot of candidates on the defensive. not all democrats have shied away from fighting back on the issue. in 2017, philadelphia district attorney lanny krasner became one of the first people to run as a self described progressive prosecutor. krasner described himself as a reformer, pledging to end cash bail, reduce mass incarceration and and the criminalization of poverty. the people of philadelphia clearly liked what they saw from krasner in his first term. last year, despite raising crime rates he won reelection in a landslide. it seems the opinions and votes of philadelphians matter very little to the states gop legislature. they are trying to impeach him.

prosecutors reform prosecutors used to represent about 10% of the u.s. population a couple of years ago. it is now 20%. our popularity doubled. they came after us in l.a. and chicago with everything they had. we just kept winning those elections. here is the point, if we just keep winning the elections, how are they going to take us out? the answer is, they're going to do it with recalls. they're going to do with impeachment. they're going to do it with every anti-democratic tactics that they have. that also means that my friends in my party, the democratic party should take notice. they can't beat us. if you want to win in pennsylvania, you need philly, fairly wants reform. you need pittsburgh, pittsburgh wants reform. the democratic party needs to get a big old tent. they need to wrap their arms around the reality that if they turn away from criminal justice reform which has been so successful and touch so many people deeply, they're going to be turning away from a lot of votes that answer the trump votes. >> i mentioned that hammering

democrats on crime has long been part of the gop's election playbook. you mentioned the importance of stressing criminal justice reform, the popularity of criminal justice reform. the reality is, when crime goes up when violent crime goes up in some places, when murder rates go up in some places, it is hard for democrats to defend against that. in wisconsin, republican senator ron johnson made crime a central part of his campaign against democratic lieutenant governor mentality barnes won. the wisconsin democrat or expressed frustration abc news wondering why it took so long for the campaign to figure out crime messaging. what would you be messaging in a race like that? >> i have to respectfully differ. it's easy. here is the reality. the murder rate is 40% higher in the trump states and in the biden states. how do they get to claim that they are safer? it is 40% higher in all the trump states as compared to the biden. states eight of the ten most murders cities in the u.s. are trump cities. what are we talking about here?

give us some decent gun regulation so we can be safer, the answer is no we're not going to do that. we're going to blame progressive cut prosecutors, we're going to blame democrats. democrats have got to standup. this is a nonsense argument that we can beat. >> i have to say, tim miller early on the show said democrats need to be more aggressive. that is what you are sounding like. it is an interesting position the party finds itself in on the issue of law in order given who runs the republican party right now. before i let you go, i want to ask you about a landmark conviction. your office secured it a few weeks. ago the former philadelphia police officer was found guilty of manslaughter in the 2017 shooting of unarmed black man the first conviction of an undue t officer in your city for at least half a century. on top of the other policies, your office has been able to implement redirecting resources away from prosecuting low level crimes, instituting cash ville reforms, how do you hope that winds like these help restore people's face in the criminal justice system? >> one of the greatest problems we have when we go to process

kate or homicide cases, we have so few willing witnesses and participants. it is a terrible problem for law enforcement when they try to -- we were with them to solve the cases. the only way you're getting witnesses back, the only way you're getting juries to trust prosecutors, when we do at the right way. we do it when we do it with integrity. some people have said, they're pretty smart people. the problem that they have a progressive prosecutor's is not the case, we won't prosecute, let's say for example prostitution, sex work. it's the cases we will. when we go and try to hold police officers, the few who commit crimes equally out countable, that is a scandal. it is exactly what is necessary. it is the antidote we need to fix what has been wrong with prosecution, wrong with policing for a long time. we can get the witnesses to come forward, we can be trusted. people will participate in law enforcement. >> larry krasner, we will have to leave it there, thank you so much for your time. coming up, at the top of the
