9:13 am
night, there was high energy among the crowd that came out to see former president obama. we spoke to people who had waited in line for hours just to get inside. this was a first come, first serve of. and we were told there were about 7000 people in that room. if you were there, you would be forgiven for thinking the momentum, based on that crowd energy, is all with the democrats in georgia's key races, but that's really not the case right now. that is why former president obama is on the trail here. democrats are struggling in the senate race. stacey abrams, who is challenging incumbent republican governor brian kemp, is behind in the polls, and georgia's senate race, you have two candidates there who are essentially at a statistical tie. right now, neither candidate, incumbent senator raphael warnock and his republican challenger, herschel walker, neither one of them are above the 50% threshold required to avoid a runoff in this state. so what your shirt democrats are hoping is that former president obama's presence here, he is very well liked amongst

democrats, that it will energize voters in the middle of early voting and in the final days and make those people who maybe hadn't voted yet remember that they should vote and go out and do it. here's some of the argument he made to georgia voters last night, and that keithy, which monika touched on, was the idea he argued that democracy is at stake in this election. here's some of what he said. >> who will fight to keep you and your family safe? the republican politicians who want to flood our streets with more guns? who actually voted against more resources for our police departments? it's the someone who carries a 40 badge and says he's in law enforcement? like he's a kid playing cops and robbers? or is it leaders like raphael warnock? >> early voting is underway in georgia. it goes until friday, and right
9:15 am
now, we have seen just about every record for early voting of late smash this cycle. over 1.2 million georgians have voted early. when you compare the numbers that we are seeing right now too early voting from 2018, you see there is an increase across all demographics. there's been a notable increase across voters over the age of 50, voting early, and also black folks. alex? >> okay, alison barber, giving us the details there from georgia. much appreciated. back with you right now, democratic congressman jamal bowman of new york. so, i'm curious. how much of a boost to these top democrats, as they fanned out across the country, how much do they bring to the ballot box? let's look at especially president obama. can he make a difference, particularly, with voter turnout? voter turnout? yes he can. i wish he was on the campaign trail much sooner. we need him. we need him through this

election. we need him after this election. this is not just for democracy. this is for humanity. i would argue that as a nation that we are losing our humanity. the way we talk to each other, the way we think about each other, the way we talk about different groups. there are is the violence in our community, the violence against elected officials. this is for our humanity. again, it is on all of us. of been to seven or eight cities over the last couple of weeks. i was in atlanta, columbus, milwaukee, detroit, phoenix, kent, ohio, akron, ohio. i was talking to organizers. people are frustrated. it is important to know that we would have universal child care right now people don't pay more than 3% of their salary towards childcare if republicans supported it. we don't have that, republicans did not support it. we would have universal pre-k. we would have investment in affordable housing. we would have voting rights, we

would have roe v. wade codified if republicans supported it. they claim that they are for a better economy. the reality is that their votes in congress have shown the exact opposite of that. again, misinformation, monitoring, lies. >> i am glad that you brought up all of those points. democrats have espoused them. you put forth legislation. at least there was defense when it comes to republican talking points. republicans have been hitting the economy. they haven't highlighting inflation, gas prices, inflation. can democrats tell voters they are doing enough on those issues. >> many democrats have introduced legislation in judea with the issue of inflation very directly the. our office introduced the emergency crisis stabilization act. they put price controls in place for groceries, utilities, energy, and rant. that is a few different

examples. that is one solution the democrat upward fourth. there is the ending corporate greed act. they will ensure corporations and wealthy individuals contribute their fair share. we can help with the issue of inflation across the country. the issue of inflation is not related to democrats or biden's fault. it is a problem at the core of our economics. it has been there for a very long time. price gouging is out of control. corporations are making record profits. we have to hold them accountable. . . . . . . . . . >>,.
