phoenix, arizona. the some, i'll show it to you in a few minutes. it is threatening to come up. i am here, of course, for another edition of velshi across america. in arizona, this is a key battleground state in this year's elections. a lot depends on what happens here. we will head back four major implications for democracy in the years ahead. that's why thought it's so important to speak directly with arizona voters. i have one more piece of fascinating conversation to speak with this great group they spoke to. we tackle the role of republicans in the fate of the republican party here in arizona and across the party. among the reason why arizona was high on my list of places to visit this election cycle is because the state, the city where i am right now with practically ground zero for the election denialism that has taken over the gop in the last couple years. it has given rise to a new crop of republican politicians who i must characterized by the fealty to donald trump in their

measure the largest part of our economic health. the national unemployment rate was three and a half retain september, as good as january 2020, before the pandemic hit. markets are up a lot they closed last week with their fourth positive week in a row with the dow industrial, on track for the best month in january of 1976. of course, the very important matter of high prices will be on the minds of many as a bull in nine days. they are a valid concern. as i mentioned last weekend, they are simply not, and some republicans would have you think, the creation of joe biden and the democrats. inflation is a good and effective campaign issue the republicans spent at least $50 million on advertising since labor day alone. they've made frequent reference to it on the campaign trail on the debate stage. republican incumbent panda dates want voters to think inflation is a problem caused by democrats but it is not. neither of those things are

true. inflation is global as a discuss on this very program last week. look at inflation rates across the globe it is clear the united states is not alone in this fight. the united kingdom inflation is headed 40 year high at 10.1%. 9.1% the european union. 11.9 in italy, 8.5% in mexico, 7.3 in spain. i could go on and on and on. republicans are simply choosing one of the biggest real issues out there and, to great effect, blaming their political opponents. it would leave you to believe that republicans at least have a good plan, or a better plan, then democrats do to fix inflation. except they don't! they would like you to believe that they are the rightful stewards of our economy, a vote for them wouldn't reduce inflation. as well as that fed interest rate, a federal keeps raising interest rates to fight inflation. in actuality republicans have no strategy to bring down inflation. they probably do a lot of what biden the feta doing right now like many other countries are. it is very tough to fight

inflation without rising interest rates. it is tough to raise increased rates fast and high without triggering a recession. virtually the only concrete plan republicans can point to in the inflation battle is to extend trump tax cuts, which are set to expire in three years. they've also vowed to extend corporate tax increases in longest in the -- a former british prime minister, liz truss, actually announcing very similar economic plan. tax cuts for the country's top earners, the british blount plummeted and the markets are massive hit. trust then changed -- the hill conceived plan in the united kingdom is being reversed because it was colossally dumb. it would be eight velocity dame idea to do the same thing here, right now at least. don't take my work for, though. economists across the ideological spectrum do not expect so-called republican plans to significantly reduce inflation. many say they could actually make price pressures worse.

he is the author of, what americans really want, really. guys, welcome to both of you. you know what i love about being in arizona, frank? everyone here, the republicans, the conservatives, they are proud of their conservative industry -- they are not all that proud of identifying as republicans right now. how strong is the strain with conservatives across the country? please don't call me a republican or at least don't call me a republican like that. i'm in conservative. i want less taxes. i want less government regulation. talk to me about this. talk to me is how it relates to
6:52 am
you. guys i think to both of you as conservatives but republicans. are you actually? >> that is fair. eight or nine days from the election. i want people to be accurate. i want viewers to have tough -- i tell them i'm a pollster. my job is to get it right. my job is to communicate what the american people think and feel without a partisan tint to it. when someone identifies me as a republican i was pushed back, no. i'm a pollster. i have to be objective. 50% of the republican party is donald trump and that element. 25% rejects him completely and want something different. the other 25% or somewhere in the middle. i would say my greatest concern right now with the election coming up is that we are putting victory, winning, beating our opponents ahead of our country right now. we are putting the election ahead of the next generation. i don't think that is healthy.
6:53 am
that is what we were just showing. trying to be productive, helpful for viewers, at this moment in time. >> we appreciate the engagement, as we always have. michael, let's talk about this. one of the things the republicans right now don't have a ton of policies they are running on. one of the things they are actually running on, i keep hearing this when i talk to republicans here. i heard it last week in michigan. the economy, inflation, the republicans are gonna do something about this inflation problem. i keep on bringing it up. he won i have a long history. you know i'm an economic guy. the whole world has inflation. the u.s. isn't even even at the top of the list. unless you believe that joe biden is president of the world we have to be cautious for blaming joe biden on inflation right now. >> i don't have any expertise in joe biden is the head of world government. i think it is important to break this question down into parts. inflation in 2021 and inflation in 2022.
6:54 am
the united states does seem to be ahead of many countries i think in large for driven by the american rescue plan. we are still living with the effects of that. i think it is fair to criticize the president and congressional democrats were some of the inflation we are having. of course you write inflation is a global phenomenon. especially in the sense that russia invaded ukraine in that sub increase supply pressures and started the supply change in commodity prices to rise. i think the questions about what republicans do about it is an important one. they could plausibly argue, we are gonna have any more big packages. we are not gonna stimulate the economy anymore. i think that is a reasonable argument to make. we are really a lot of policy that went impact inflation in 2023. >> maybe we are concerned about the wrong things. everyone i talked to say they
6:55 am
are concerned about democracy. by the way, republican say and democrats say. they say for entirely different reasons. the things worrying democrats about democracy in the things when republicans about democracy tend to not be the same thing right now. >> you're correct. we've been polling on this over the past few months. an increasing number of americans are calling for non partisan primaries. are calling for first pass to post so you don't have to have election after election. trying to open up the electoral system so people feel like they have a vote and people feel like they have a voice right now republicans believe there is tremendous voter corruption. democrats believe there is tremendous voter suppression. we have to stop this. for the most part of our election system -- i have to look at 2018 2020. all of the people that voted
