fear of undocumented people crossing the border and coming to the u.s. for a better life. it's a fear that we don't have a democracy. you know, 43% of people in this country are concerned over voter intimidation and other forms of violence at the ballot box. this is part of an organized effort by republicans to intimidate people from voting, people who gave you to be democratic-leaning voters. that has incredible, terrible consequences for our democracy. when folks don't feel comfortable exercising their constitutional right. >> you are in arizona. i've got to ask you, kari lake, the republican far-right election denying candidate, leading the polls for governor, how can the democrat, katie hobbs, secretary of state, how can she be doing so badly against somebody like kari lake? a lot of critics say it's not -- she's run a very lackluster campaign, she's avoided debating her opponent. what is your view on this key race?
5:43 pm
>> so much a our politics is about the candidate. it's also the case that there are certain dynamics that are very difficult to overcome. we see mark kelly doing incredibly well against blake masters. we also know that arizona is a purple state. it's not a state where democrats have always won state wide. i know folks will continue to debate whether or not katie hobbs should have participated in the debate with kari lake. i like to focus on the positive of what we can do. first of all, katie hobbs can still win between now and november 8th. i'm also in arizona's first congressional district, where dave schleicher, an election denier, who has been fined by both the house ethics committee and the sec, and who opposes a woman's right to choose, it is facing off against someone named -- who is representative of the american dream and who is now running in a seat because of

redistricting and who has a fighting chance at unseating dave striker. he is someone who grew up on food stamps and rose to become a business leader, and the leader of arizona's longest running head start. i think he will do a fantastic job. >> let's talk about democracy, congressman. a cbs news poll out this week shows folks voting democratic, they see a functioning democracy as a greater concern than a stronger economy, versus those voting republican, who see a strong economy as more important. only 29 of people -- 20% people think that's a priority. we are heading in a -- authoritarian path as a country, are we not? >> we are. shame on democrats if they can't talk about the need for a strong economy and talk about the work democrats alone have been doing in congress this past term to cut costs for working families while also talking about the fight to protect fundamental rights like abortion. yes, even the freedom to vote.
5:45 pm
which is foundational to our democracy. if we don't have a truly representative government, as you know, mehdi, all things are off the table. we will have a shrinking minority of people continuing to seize power through voter suppression, election subversion, and yes, election denialism, like what we see from kari lake and blake masters and other lower level republican officials in arizona and other states. >> you and i have talked before about how you were a freshman congressman on 16. you are fearing for your life that day. we've learned new details tonight about the attack on paul pelosi, including the zip ties found at the scene. do you share the concern of some of your colleagues who have said, someone will get killed at some point. it doesn't seem to be stopping. >> many, as you know, i nearly died alongside so many of my colleagues on january 6th in the house chamber. i've been saying for years now that when folks realize how unprotected so many members of congress are, it is going to be

5:59 pm

ways that critics have been warning about. that the racist, white supremacists, the extremists, they have felt in bold and, just merely by must takeover of twitter. basically, twitter hasn't change anything except its owner. and that was enough to allow these trolls to feel like it's okay to come out and say these disgusting things. it tells you all you need to know about how musk's messaging, his signaling, has been received. how it has been heard. it's interesting also, and critical to see what twitter advertisers to in the coming weeks. advertising makes up 90% of twitters revenue. if they sit by and watch as this site increasingly becomes a cesspool of racist, antisemites, hate invite size tweets. this will be on that e invite siz this will be on them just as much as it on elon musk. >> sadly, it's all in the advertisers. they're the only ones who can stop it from getting worse.
