and later rob reiner and michael moore join us to give us their takes on this tumultuous mid term and who they think won the week. we begin four days from an election with massive consequences for our democracy. the stakes in this election could not be higher for so many reasons. in her first public remarks, speaker of the house nancy pelosi thanked supporters for their good wishes for paul pelosi, who is at home recovering from a skull fracture after being beaten with a hammer and she addressed what's at stake. >> there is no question that our democracy is on the ballot. we see that. you know that. there's no question that our planet is on the ballot. that is so clear. they call it a hoax but it is scientifically significantly a challenge to us all and our values are on the ballot. you know all of that. you know why this election is

important. >> yes, we do. because it's also the election that will determine if future elections in america will actually matter at all or whether we will continue our descent into the abyss. who would have thought trump would put our country on the brink of ending our democracy. and we said our republican party was moving toward fascism and we were told we were being hysterical. but i digress. no point in saying i told you so because this is where we are. and in a sign of where we're headed, nbc news confirmed what the former president teased last night. he plans to make it official he is running for president again later this month. that announcement could come on november 14th. november 14th also happens to be the scheduled date for his testimony to the january 6th committee about his and his

chairman. when you hear people saying if we win these elections, you don't have to ever worry about losing an election again, republican voters, because we will guarantee you always win. you will win because we will just split the results the way you want them. you never have to ever, ever, ever worry about not getting a trophy, we'll always give you the trophy. that sounds to me like it should be illegal but if those people become secretaries of state, they will have the power to do it. your thoughts on that. >> well, what you're describing, i mean, it's not a democracy, it's fascism, plain and simple. but what we learned in 2020, if we didn't understand it before, is that some of these offices, secretary of state, state attorney general, they really do have the authority to manipulate elections if you have people who are not willing to follow the

he must have been terrified. can you imagine someone breaking into your home and hitting you with a hammer in the head, it's horrifying. but what the right has done is they've turned that into a joke. they think it's funny. they are sort of luxuriating in the violence against this man because they hate his wife. that also is fascism, is it not, violence in order to achieve political ends? >> oh, it is, absolutely. textbook definition of it. and what we see playing out here realtime is just how much the gop has now inculcated, brought into its fiber, its being the same level of compassion and care and concern for others that donald trump demonstrated in the past. and so this is a complete reflection and a sort of a final reflection of the ultimate embrace of trumpism. so it's not about the fact that

nancy's husband was attacked, regardless of -- i would even submit to you if it was not a, quote, political attack, it was just some random off-the-street attack, you would get the same level of response from these people. and i think that there's something that americans have to reflect on in the next few days as they go to the polls on the 8th, if they haven't voted already. again, these people are an extension of us. so if that's how you feel about what you saw happen to nancy, then that says you probably feel the same way if it happened to one of your own. really? because that's about what where we are right now. >> what it reflects is -- >> go ahead. go ahead. >> well, i mean, look, i just convicted last week three members of the wolverine watchmen. these are individuals who were charged with lending material support for an act of domestic terrorism. what was that act? it was a conspiracy to kidnap and assassinate our governor,

gretchen whitmer. her opponent mocked her for being a crime victim and my opponent has said that he will dismiss the remaining cases involving the wolverine watchman because apparently it's okay to kidnap and potentially murder a sitting governor as long as it's not a governor of your party. that's where we're at right now. >> that's it. >> and an excellent point because that is the bottom line here, right, is that they feel that their opponents don't necessarily deserve to live, that only they deserve to rule and only they deserve to live and deserve safety. this is "the washington post" headline. -- former party, the party you used to lead don't believe it's possible for democrats to win elections. i can't get away from the fact that the democrats are the party of everybody, white, black, latino, lgbtq, young people, secular people, religious people. so the republicans who are 90% white christian party say that only they are legitimate. so when they win, when they win an election, that's legitimate. but when the polly glot party wins, they are illegitimate. i just can't get away from there. their idea is their tribe has to win or if somebody on the other side gets hit with a hammer and kidnapped and held at gunpoint, oh well, too bad. >> that's one less democrat we have to worry about and that's kind of how they see it. it's an unfortunate, unamerican, inhuman response. i mean, because that's -- i don't know how their mama raised them, but i'm sure there are a

about to go there. i'm glad you brought it up. folks need to understand the setup. this is all part of the big setup so that when you get on november 9th or later in the evening on november 8th and you're adding in those votes that weren't counted, the early ballot votes, the, you know, votes that will be counted later, it changes the outcome because the votes haven't been tallied completely. you set in place the early narrative that says we win period. and if we don't win, that means the system is rigged. and now here are polls that reinforce our winning because of course everyone's voting for us, no one's voting against us. no one's voting against us. so when the polls out there are then thrown into the mix and the averages are changed to creep up more in favor of republicanss are that sets in place and puts in place that narrative you'll hear play out on november 8th,

9th and beyond. and you dovetail that with donald trump's probable announcement on the 14th that he's going to run, you see exactly where that's going. folks, don't be stupid, don't be duped, don't play the game, overwhelm the system with your vote. if you haven't already, do so on tuesday because that attorney general on this screen with me and others like her are about democracy, we need you to overwhelm the ballot to protect the vote going forward. >> last question to you, dana. if trump does announce he's going to run, he would be doing it because he thinks it would protect him from indictment. what do you make of the idea there might be a special counsel the d.o.j. is considering if he does run? >> you know, again, no one should be above the law, including the president of the united states or the former president of the united states. and so i think personally it's a good idea. i would note there's a special counsel right now in michigan

bipartisan group overseeing elections. they could transfer its authority to the republican-held legislature or to the secretary of state. with the current republican gubernatorial candidate mitch mitchells tells you the republicans will never lose another election, he means it. when they helped republicans to seize control of the state's government, they promptly implemented the nation's most aggressive redistricting, which effectively banished democrats from the legislative process. the long-term tea party takeover of wisconsin culminated in the election of multi-millionaire ron johnson, johnson, who promised he would only serve two terms is now in neck-in-neck race with the current governor to try for term number three. johnson has told women who want their reproductive rights to move somewhere else. he's called social security a

seem interested in reelecting a resurrectionist? >> we expected this to be close from the very beginning. i'm really grateful you gave me a chance to talk about the race and you're holding ron johnson accountable for his dangerous decisions when it comes to our democracy. the fact that he is so arrogant to say he won't accept the outcome of the election, he'll see how it goes, that's who he's always been. in 2020 he tried to send fraudulent electors to the vice president in an attempt to overthrow the 2020 election. so we expect him to try any and everything. the fact is they weren't successful in 2021, we don't want them to be successful this year. >> are you concerned that ron johnson putting out those things and that's only one of the many

there. so why do you suppose that when sort of national democrats, the party apparatus looks at races like yours and they say he can't beat sarah huckabee sanders and answer that and tell us why you think you can. >> well, first of all, it's great to be on and see you again and good to see my good friend senator booker. can't wait to celebrate your win. look, it's for a few reasons. one, it's because folks misunderstand the structural dynamics. they're looking for the typical factors, how much money you raised, how much your name recognition is and who are the current elected officials. but what they miss is that you have candidates like charles booker who are out there and myself, we're changing the structural dynamics. we're going everywhere and showing up in places where democrats have not shown up, places that typically and traditionally have not voted for republicans in the last few years. we also have taken time to listen to the voters in our state. so i've traveled to all 75 counties in my state and i've listened to our kansans. what i'm hearing in addition to

should ever lose their home or go bankrupt as a result of medical bills or hospital bills. he went into this long thing of how capitalism is better than universal health care and that for profit medicine and for profit hospitals get us better hospitals and better health care. i said, that's actually not true. the health insurance companies, they want to approve as little as possible. if your doctor says you should get this test or whatever, they are all over not approving it because profits go down when they have to pay that out. he didn't see it that way. he thought that -- i said, let me ask you, on a moral level, if somebody gets sick, which is not their fault, why should they be punished? we have more people evicted from their homes because of health care bills than any

other reason. we are the only western industrialized country -- i saw this chart a few months ago, a number of families evicted from their homes, losing their mortgage because of health care bills. the uk, zero. france, zero. canada, zero. united states, it was in the hundreds of thousands of people who have been evicted or have had to lose their home. is that the america you want to live in, i said to doctor us? that's not who we are, right? i want to live in an america that supports the profit motive. >> wow. >> are you a doctor? really? isn't the first rule for the last 2000 years since the coat of whatever his name was, begins with the letter h, i can't remember. yes, thank you. first do no harm. millions of americans have been harmed by the way we do health care. thank god that for president

harrowing story about meeting doctor oz and his indifference to the fact that people didn't have health care. i think about the things the republicans are willing to say that you would think would be completely -- it would make them impossible for them to win. mike lee bragging to a bunch of donors he wanted to pull up security root and branch and get rid of it. he got some applause for it. you have a guy in north carolina who wants to have rape panels where women have to go before they can get an abortion. you think about this stuff, you think they should not be close. what do you make of the fact that despite saying some of the most outrageous things -- tim ryan saying all tim ryan wants to do is get illegal immigrants and get them gender -- that doesn't make sense. why is it close? >> because the other side reality does not mean anything. they are only interested in power. they are only interested -- and they will do anything to get the power. and they are willing to kill,

literally kill, to get the power. you can't have a conversation with them. the only thing we can do is try to hold on to the house and a couple senate seats. it will be very hard. if we do not do that, this might be the last election we have in a democratic -- in a democracy. >> that's what keeps me awake at night. you've been positive, michael more. you've been good at predicting these things. i was on the bill marshall with you when you told us that trump was going to. when i was like, no, that's not possible. america would never let that guy. you are like, oh yeah they will. what do you think about this election? give us your prognostication? >> when i said that in 2016, i live in michigan. i saw what was going on. i said it with all sadness because i did not want that to happen. in fact, hillary clinton won by 3 million votes in the popular vote. the american people did not want trump in the white house. they wanted hillary clinton. just like 7 million more voted for biden in 2020.

what i don't understand about the polls, we are supposed to accept the fact that in the last two years, the 7 million votes biden won by, all of a sudden, those seven millions have changed their minds probably listening to -- too much. they don't like biden. i think it's all a bunch of bias. you had somebody on earlier on the show talking about the way that they load up these polls, the aggregates. there are so many -- >> the rnc chairman. >> gop funded and corporate lobbyist funded polls that, when they do those big heads, they throw those in. it jumps the number up in favor of the more conservative policy or politician. for example, 5:38. good people. much respect. two weeks before the kansas vote this summer on abortion, 538 said that and the antiabortion people, their side

was going to win by four points. in the end, the people of kansas, the people who wanted choice in the constitution, they won by 18 point. the polls had said we were going to lose by four points. this is why i don't want people this weekend to be at home depressed and despair, oh, we are going to lose. yes, it's close. it's very close. that's why everybody's job this weekend is to figure out who you have to call, where can you go knock on doors, do whatever. do not, do not sit around this weekend. this is, as rob said, this is our moment to save our democracy. >> i'm going to give you 30 seconds to give your elevator pitch for people to vote, rob reiner. >> you know, if you care about a woman's right to choose, if you care that he will ever have a free and fair election again, if you care about preserving 246 years of self rule, then you will get out and vote.
