tv   Yasmin Vossoughian Reports  MSNBC  November 5, 2022 11:00am-12:00pm PDT

11:00 am
hey everybody.
11:01 am
good afternoon. i'm yasmin vossoughian. wow, three days can be believed we made it from the midterms. the actions, fast is furious on the campaign trail. candidates in their highest profile surrogates out in force throughout the country. including the democrat's most potent weapon, former president barack obama spending the day campaigning for pennsylvania senate candidate, john fetterman. >> i think somebody mentioned earlier we are set our clocks back to probe and our. on tuesday let's make sure our country doesn't get backs set back 50 years. and let me just say, that has to be worth 15 minutes of your time. >> obama is going to be sharing
11:02 am
the stage with president biden, his former vice president in a couple hours. they are both sharing the state with the man who served between them, donald trump. set to hold a rally for dr. oz. we have a flood of nbc news co-correspondents federal cross the country and keep our ground states, of course. including chomping at the bit right now goes for latest in the races that they are covering. let's get right to. it want to start with nbc's mike memoli who is standing by for us in philly. where as we mentioned, there are some former president sitting the campaign trail. emily, good to talk to you this hour. talk us through. we heard from former president barack obama long with president biden a little bit earlier today. they are going to be together later on this evening. what can we expect? . yasmin, we are just about three hours away from the biggest political show of force that democrats can muster with three days to go until the midterm elections. you have former president barack obama coming out of the bullpen.
11:03 am
in the last couple of weeks, he has done now six rallies in the toughest races for democratic incumbents for senate, for governor, as he tries to make the argument to fire up the democratic base and lay out plainly what is at stake in this midterm election. then you have of course, the sitting president joe biden. who has been traveling the country as well trying to make that case, talking about democratic accomplishments and warning of what is at risk. some of those accomplishments being potentially in jeopardy if republicans take back control of the house. and so we are going to see these two men, of course, who served together for eight years in the white house, campaigned a lot together, for a's campaigns. we saw the last time the two of them campaign together, two years ago in michigan on the eve of president biden's election as president. and it is significant, yasmin, they are here in pennsylvania. since the very early stages of this midterm election, the white house has made it clear. pennsylvania senate race was their top priority and that is why you are seeing the first and the only joint appearance by these two men with john fetterman, democratic candidate
11:04 am
for senate. john spiro course running. and this is all with ours until we see voters go to the polls firing up the democratic base. yes there are still some undecided voters out there, but there is real concern that the democratic enthusiasm at this point does not match what we are seeing on the republican side. so bring in these two men back together, can we not just for the governor, also the damn ballot candidates as well as a message that democrats make it clear what is at stake and try to swing those undecided voters here at the last stage. and it has been interesting, yasmin, i've been talking to my sources. obama and biden have been talking a lot of the last few weeks as one is on the road, the other is calling. they are treating some intel on what they are seeing in talking about. how hard it is to get their message out giving concerns about inflation. and you will see them tonight try to speak to those concerns and make that closing message to democrats. >> let me ask you this, mentally, because you and i am spoken about it over the last couple weeks. it is kind of localizing these messages. and i'm wondering if we are seeing former president barack
11:05 am
obama, along with president biden as well, doing that here in the state of pennsylvania and what is to come the next couple of days before the elections on tuesday. which is, okay, if we are in the state of pennsylvania we know specifically folks here, voters in philly here for instance are on the outskirts. their main focus right now is inflation, of course. right? it is cost a living, it is the overall economy. so that is what we are gonna hone in on. if we go somewhere else for instance if you think back of course to michigan, prop three is on the ballot there. they are gonna be focusing more on abortion. rights do you see that kind of pattern playing out? >> we have actually seen. that if the special if you look at present biden schedule. just as, week he was in new mexico talking about student loan debt. then he went to san diego yesterday and was talking about the chips and science act. this morning he is outside of chicago in the suburbs talk about prescription drugs. there are a lot of messages that are going to the places where they think each method is gonna be most effective.
11:06 am
and really why biden has come back to pennsylvania time time again, this will be the 18th trip to pennsylvania, that is more than every other state if you take out delaware course, maryland where he spends a lot of his weekends. it really is the capstone of what they see as the biden coalition. black voters here in the city of philadelphia, suburban women in the suburbs, where president boma was earlier today. labor, union workers, the joe biden democrats officially prided himself on. and then he looked to places like scranton, the middle class people that he's always affiliated himself. with this is why the city is always been supported. and yes, when you only have to look at what's happening on the republican side as well. for president donald trump campaigning here as well. it is three days until the midterm elections and, yasmin, that means it is about four or five days until we pivot right into 2024. we will be looking at whether trump gets in the race, whether joe biden is gonna secrecy a second term. so all eyes on pennsylvania which of course, you will remember, this was the state
11:07 am
that put joe biden over the top to make in the present of the united states. we certainly remember that. of course the news broke yesterday the possibility of trump announcing that he will be running again in 2024 and a couple days. but who knows. exactly, when might mentally, as always good to great to see my. brandon joyfully. pennsylvania must be feeling pretty special right about now. let's move on to georgia, everybody. in georgia say we are looking at record-breaking early voting numbers there in the midterm elections. it is driven by races for governor, u.s. senate as well. that is where we find alison barber sitting by for us in beautiful college town. bulldogs, right? >> yes, a very big game today as. well >> which must mean it's incredibly busy. lots of folks celebrating the game day. but nonetheless, head of the midterm elections folks are focusing on of course the senate late race along with the governor's race there. >> what issues really mean there driving voters are speaking to them on the ground, allison? >> yeah, i mean you mentioned
11:08 am
early voting numbers. a lot of the will probably come into case game have already cast their ballot because over 2 million georgians voted early in person. but we are still seeing the candidates on the trail. herschel walker was here and offenses morning. senator warnock is going to be in savannah tomorrow making their final push to tell voters who haven't voted to get out and vote. we have spent weeks talking to voters across the state about the issues that are driving them to the ballot box this year. regardless of political affiliation, we consistently hear voters talk to us about the economy. inflation. but that is not the only issue that is driving them to the polls. there are other factors at play, as. well listen to some of what we have heard. >> inflation. just the policies and changes. they're just cutthroat. the fuel. >> i really care about health care and making sure everyone is insured. i think we need that as georgians. >> the top three was military, air service, as well as i would
11:09 am
say crime for sure, and the economy. >> i've always consider wrestle pro-life but the idea that a woman's choice, i don't know, that bothers me that the government is in the bed with the women. i am bothered by the. >> so there are a lot of issues that voters here are really paying close attention to, seeing a lot of people really engaged in the election process here. the senate race is a really big one. it is on track to become the costliest race in the nation. and when you look at the polls right now, the two candidates are essentially in the statistical tie with neither one of them in recent polling breaking the necessarily 50% threshold in the state in order to avoid a runoff election. so when it comes to the senate race, with republican herschel walker and incumbent democratic senator raphael warnock, we might not have a winner on election day. in part, because of a third party candidate who was pulling
11:10 am
about 5% of the vote right now. we could be looking at this race and december. >> yasmin. >> jesus gonna be a nail-biter, to say the. least if you break away from election come coverage. the first as a cc game ever went to was a huge ea game. tailgating for uga is like none other. so take some time, if you. can >> if you get in, trouble just play me. it good to talk to you, alison. all right, let's go to another crucial race, everybody. ohio and specifically tim ryan facing off against republican challenger j.d. vance when they open senate seats. in that state, despite donald trump winning ohio decisively in 2016 and 2020, polling showing this races remaining very close as well. what race isn't, at this point? jessie horses joining us. jesse, good to talk to you. let's start first weekend with tim ryan. he just received an endorsement from outgoing congress woman liz cheney. what are you hearing about the strategy for this final stretch,
11:11 am
three days left? >> yeah, as she put it to me last night, yasmin. tim ryan is trying to thread the needle. he has some room to make up in that polling port. he and republican j.d. ban russian brushing aside what we've seen from polling today. but make no mistake about it, tim ryan knows he has some ground he has to make it because this is a state that is giving more and more red. so while he is trying to rally the democratic base, traditional democratic voters, he is also trying to crisscross the state reaching out to people who might lean republican or flat out be republican. and trying to get through to them with his messaging as someone who has agreed with president trump. who has bucked his own party line before. and as someone who is trying to appeal to a worker. that is his overall economic message. someone who's trying to prioritize jobs and workers. so he wouldn't be upset of people mistook him for a republican which is very different from what we have seen from democrats in some other races where they are very
11:12 am
clearly trying to draw a contrast between democrats and republicans on issues including abortion, and election integrity. those are the two of the buzzwords that democrats are talking about in other races. we hear about the scenes here, but they are certainly second tier issues as far as what we hear from that candidates on the trail. not to say that they are second tier, obviously they matter to some people. here's part of what ryan told us last night. >> we are seeing full starting to look like they're slipping away from you. you don't seem it? >> not on the ground. on the ground we are in a small town, we are getting 100 people show up. lots of republicans saying i've already voted for you. so what is on the ground is on the ground. >> the phrase we hear out here is republicans. but ryan i've talked to some of, them the question is how many of them are there. >> jesse talk to us about shady vance. former trump are obviously now leaning into the trump endorsement. just a couple days out. how is he looking, what is he
11:13 am
saying? >> yeah, and he is right there with the republican leadership campaigning with governor mike to align yesterday. we asked france what his message would be, specifically to a group of manufacturing workers who we met you say they are undecided at this point and working in his own town of middletown ohio. here's what he told us on the trail. >> why don't we have manufacturing starting to go back to the state of ohio, backed into our country? i think it starts with trump's policies 56 years ago and we need to build on it. that is exactly what we are talking about doing. >> so he is leaning into the gop and trying to draw a contrast between himself and democrats. time ride to the democrats who he say are responsible for the inflation was we are seeing in this country right now, yasmin. economy is really one of the big issues here. >> yeah, across the board, to say the least jesse cursed, in cincinnati ohio forest. thank you. let's go, we have one more for. you shot bruce in milwaukee wisconsin where we are
11:14 am
following races for senate governor there as well. shaq, talk to us? >> hi there, yasmin. while i tell you. there is an empty room behind me back at that is somewhat of a point here. this is milwaukee's field office and we saw a group of canvassers go out into the rain despite the rain with their clipboards, the door signs, they are trying to get people to turn out to vote. they are reminding the win day is undermining them to go out today if they can on this last day of early voting. and over the course of the week, we have been spending time with both candidates. senator ron johnson, mandela barnes, and one thing you hear in ron johnson's closing pathogens this idea that lieutenant governor mandela barnes has disdain and contempt for wisconsin either people in this country. i gave lieutenant governor barnes who is here with canvassers of volunteers earlier today, i gave him the opportunity to respond to that line of attack. here's a bit of what he said. >> this is him attempting to further divide the state simply because he spent 12 years in
11:15 am
office doing nothing for the people of wisconsin and doing everything he could to make himself more wealthy. his contempt for women of the state, if they don't like are eating for nine criminal portion ban. and his content for everyday people who just want to live a decent life, that is what frustrates me. ron johnson has been lying for the past 12 years. >> you also heard lieutenant governor barnes go after johnson for not committing to it that there is a lot of the election on tuesday. that was a question i asked him earlier this week and he kind of dodged it. he said it will depend on what he sees and accused democrats of cheating despite any evidence of that. one thing that we are also seeing across the state of wisconsin, more than 600,000 people have already cast the ballot. again, this is the last day of early voting. it ends in just a couple of hours. so you are in wisconsin, you have an opportunity to cast a ballot before tuesday. let me ask you this, shaq. you play that sound for us with lauren johnson yesterday when
11:16 am
you and iraq together. i am wondering if you have had an opportunity to talk to folks there on the ground about their reaction to that. this lack of commitment from him, possibly from accepting results or election results. because we talk a lot about the run up to tuesday, but we also need to talk about what is gonna happen after tuesday when we are hearing things like what we hear from ron johnson, like what we're hearing from kara lake and arizona, as well. >> yeah, you know, a lot of this is already baked. and we've heard lawn johnson cast out on the results of the 2020 election even when he said he wouldn't commit to this election or he said it is an open question whether to commit to the results of this election. he said that, you know, there are still questions about what happened in 2020. so a lot of democrats already say hey, that is hurontown son is. i'm not gonna fight that. but i will tell, you are republican events are still a lot of people there who say, yeah i have my own doubts about what happened in 2020. you mentioned the polling and how the polling is neck in neck.
11:17 am
well deeper in that poll we saw about a third of republicans in this state have no confidence in the 2020 election results. so it is not just a handful of people we are talking about. we are talking about significant amounts of people in that party. he is seeking to a significant portion is beige. >> wow, shaq rooster, thank you. all right everybody, we are just getting started here. midterm coverage continuing throughout the show. coming up at 3 pm eastern, you don't wanna miss this conversation. i'll be joined by new jersey congresswoman maggie charles to talk about are very tight race for reelection in the state of new jersey. still ahead, this hour anti-transgender ads flooding dozens of states. dozens of states locks the child from going through puberty, it's a first step and gender change since surgery. pandora it opens a pandora's box, only you can close it. it ope ns a pandora's box, only yolet's talk about whg out of these campaigns. but first, up next, the effort to energize mothers to vote and the issues that are resonating

after the fall of roe. but there are some concerns amongst democrats crowds that abortion may not actually turn out to be the energizing political voter moved it up for the midterms. kristen moreau thank miners the cofounder of monetizing which works to mobilize women and mothers vote and mobilize for critical issues. i find is fascinating because our members i was out front of the supreme court as roe fell, i wondered how the democrats were going to keep up this momentum that they had seen and folks energize we had what was happening there. because we were five, six months out from this election. and it seems like we are seeing it fall off. i'm wondering what you are seeing as you are trying to get mobs to turn out. is it with democrats are hoping for which is, fight for democracy, fight for abortion rights, or republicans with economy and crime. what is the most important thing for moms right now? >> to start, i want to share some good news. and that is that we are seeing a surge in volunteers, mansour
11:23 am
volunteered to help get out the vote. we had over 800,000 contacts, multi mom happening. moms are had writing postcards, texting, getting moms information about how to vote. and we are also seeing early voting up with women voting for the men. so there are some good indicators that we will have that search after the fall pharaoh. what are the top policies? we are seeing paid family medical leave, childcare, economic policies that matter to women and families. and we are seeing still abortion care being a highly prioritized policy. this is important to know because six out of ten people need to need and have abortions are bobs. so this is a mob issue. >> let me redo the staff of the wall street journal. amongst white suburban women swinging towards backing republicans for congress. when we get into it a little bit with witches, including tuner 96 white women living in
11:24 am
suburbs say they favor republicans or get congressional races by 15 percentage points. what do you make of that? >> we had a polluted recently that found quite the opposite. we found that if a candidate supports care policies, then people are 84% more likely to vote for them. if they support care policies along with abortion care, then that number of support goes up even further. so what we are seeing and hearing from moms is that they see democrats with an economic plan that is actually proactive. childcare, paid family, leave health care, home care. but we are not seeing republicans doing that. we are seeing republicans attack our freedoms, block those policies, and mauve so it is happening. >> do the moms you are speaking to actually know what is on the ball right now and what is at stake? i asked this because, for instance in michigan with prop three, from what i have been hearing as you had canvassers out in the show talking to folks they say do you understand what is at stake your property? and that is maybe motivating
11:25 am
folks to vote if they understand what is happening. and much of the issue here is that confusion as to what is at stake. especially when it comes to princes, abortion rights across the country. >> we are not hearing confusion about abortion rights fee at stake. i think that that is something that is really important to raise. because we don't talk about effects that abortion care is a commonly needed. and so that is not making it into some of the polls. but we know that there is a surge in voters that are supporting abortion care and those care policies together, and we expect to see, you know that because of the attacks on abortion and the attacks on our freedoms what is the expectation, the outcome of this election has fundamentally changed. nobody expected this midterm election cycle to be as competitive as it is right now. and so the competitiveness that we are seeing is because mom voters, women voters, people voters, are actually really concerned about protecting our
11:26 am
freedoms. our freedom to follow it on to me, our freedom to work and live, our freedom to be able to be a community. >> one last one for you. are you seeing a break out when it comes to concern for issues amongst white moms versus moms of color? we are seeing right now, again we do this broad polls, we are seeing 84% of moms are more likely to vote for the candidates who support care policies, and that goes up even with abortion care, so we are seeing a huge surge. and one of the things we talked with the getting is, what does that mean and what are the indicators? and so a mom's rising, since we are grassroots organization, the early indicator we are seeing as more than 15,000 moms are turning out to help get out the vote. we are also seeing, with targets, smart that more people are registering to vote in the lead up to this election who are women and moms, and we are already seeing in the early voting that there are more democrats in women voting than anticipated. >> of course it will all bear
