nevada, catherine cortez matters is locked in a tight bitter race against republican adam laxalt. in a state where nearly 800,000 of the 600,000 votes have already been counted. msnbc's -- is in reno force and, cognitive spoke with a number of republican voters. what is driving them to go to the polls? what did they tell you? >>, alex it is a tight race. i want to make sure i point out that all voters we speak to, nonpartisan, democrat and republican, seem to have the same issues affecting them in their effect they are upset about these issues. we will talk about inflation, of course. the talk about the fact that gap is so expensive in the state of nevada. the difference is who they blame for those problems.
10:48 am
here is a conversation we had with the republican voters. >> instead of talking about democracy this is something that doesn't exist there talking about running on the pot forms. i should be running on their achievements. obviously they don't have. them i've been there for two years and this is what i've done. so they're not doing that. it's pretty pathetic, actually. >> we are all hurting. my story is that anything different than anybody else's story these days it is just getting worse. when you have to think, do i put the gas in the car so i can get to work or do i feed my child today, something really needs to be done. this is criminal in my opinion. the fact that they have left those borders open is criminal, in my opinion. this is murder. >> and again these are the same issues which have been brought
10:49 am
up by nonpartisan democrats. the difference is they believe that to the pandemic and other things that influence nevada have caused that and that some of the ones that do you support -- tell us that they plan to continue believing that she can affect people in nevada. but they are upset. and again, the differences will be blamed for the issues they are facing. when you look at here is what it so far they're able to settle for the democrats and sense that it is more democrats that have gone in for early voting which is usually the case, moving into election day there still more democrats to vote in the county. a bigger. difference but it's gonna come down to marshall county here in reno. we have the largest number of non partisans and aside from turnout being important for both parties it is getting these non partisans to support them that will be important for the candidates that wins these rallies. >> to your point it looks like in this county things are pretty much even in regards to early voting so that is going to be a bellwether. thank you very much. coming up next is a new

the house january six committee is closing in on secret service testimony related to an incident described by this person, former trump aide cassidy hutchinson. when she said the trump tried to grab the steering wheel of an armored suv and lunge towards his secret security detail when he was told he was not being driven from his rally to the capitol. our next guest has written literally the book on stay secret service and the author is carol leonnig. national investigative reporter with the washington post and msnbc contributor. i was good to see, you carroll. i'm curious what more you are learning about this today and what your sources are telling you about these interviews. >> alex it is always great to see you.
10:53 am
i love how you focus on the medias issues and today even on sunday this is breaking or will be soon. and that is that secret service i've spoken to say they are finally in a place where they're gonna sit very soon to go over these questions that were raised by the bombshell testimony of capture the hudson. you will all remember that cassidy hutchinson gave that testimony that donald trump asked president had basically attacked the leader of the security detail in a way -- that was taking the president's speech on january six when he wanted to go to the capitol and people in the secret service were telling him it's not -- back to the white house. the problem with catching say cassidy hutchinson's testimony was that she relayed which she said she was told by a very senior secret service official. and what we are hearing is that finally they are going to ask these people who were in the
10:54 am
car, first time witnesses, and people who relayed this information they're gonna ask them what really happened. >> cannot wait to hear what the reaction to that is. let's talk about congress women's a lofgren who says that he's not sure the trump secret service fetal warrant mike pence's detail the trump was encouraging possibly armed rally goers to march to the capitol. when you hearing about that? >> so zoe lofgren's point is that there was not evidence right now but anything different was being done, vice president pence's security detail. as they took him to the capital. in a superficial role. he couldn't buy one of the role certifying election results on january six. you can say on a, vermont went on to do that. what congresswoman lofgren is finding is that there is no evidence that secret service had any red flags or expert
10:55 am
details or extra security ramped up for the vice president, while they knew that domestic extremist organizations and trump supporters were talking about targeting the capital for violence. if you know a building is essentially going to be the scene of a potential riot or melee or attack, then you do have to wonder why there wasn't a more amped up security presence for the vice president who is going to the building that day. >> yes. absolutely answers need to come from that as well. switching gears here, i know you are one of four reporters to break the story that the capitol police were not monitoring cameras when the assailant broke into speak up a lacey's home and attacked her husband paul. what is the latest on that investigation carole, what can you tell us? >> this was a real messy one, alex. as we reported the capital police have live video feed
10:56 am
from cameras installed to the back in the side. and other places which we are not going to disclose at nancy pelosi's home in san francisco. the problem was that when she was not in the home and she was being physically protected by her security detail they were not monitoring those videos in realtime. the problem, as you, know is people who try to pack elected leaders often try to target their home or loved ones and so paul pelosi happened to be home while the capitol police were not monitoring that feed and they found out a little late about what was going on. in fact, only noticed that there were strobe lights shining when they started to cycle through some non priority video. camera footage. and those strobe lights were police cars already on the scene. what is good about capitol police video footage rage, the

surveillance, was that they saw and can prove that mr. the pop it was the person. although there is no conspiracy here he's just a camera on a video breaking in that window in the back door into the family room and that is pretty powerful evidence. >> absolutely. can you imagine being the capitol police scrolling back in the video as you described that and looking back and seeing that then happen that would've definitely caused a skip of the heartbeat foreshore. caroline, it's always good to see you. thank you so. much for all of you, that's the end of me and also reports. get it and vote, everyone. yasmin vossoughian continues our coverage. our coverage so let's see some hustle!
