tv   Yasmin Vossoughian Reports  MSNBC  November 6, 2022 12:00pm-1:00pm PST

12:00 pm
>> hi everyone, i'm yasmin vossoughian. if you're just joining, us welcome, it's good to see you. if you are sticking with, us thank you. you're now an hour ahead of us, in two days to go until the midterm elections. millions of people have already voted for, millions have not yet. those on both sides are on a last-minute blitz to convince them. >> we have great candidates, people are showing up to vote. there's no energy on the
12:01 pm
democrats side. this election is about the biden agenda, people don't like high inflation, high crime, open borders. >> half of the democrats see, we are in the hunt to win. forget a majority, that constitutes a good night. we're going to defend our midstream democratic values against threats to our democracy, we're going to protect women's reproductive freedom and voting rights. we're going to get you cheaper prices because our candidates have real plants. they're going to move better than people think on tuesday night. >> we have an army of correspondents, everybody, throughout the country right, now covering the key races. including somebody here from right now it, it just a few moments. also the, south a disturbing line is taking root among the trump faithful. >> what do you think happened with paul pelosi? >> i think that's a crock of -- >> our friends at the good liars get into it with trump supporters at the weekend
12:02 pm
rally. here's what's already being spread about the attack on nancy pelosi's husband, paul. that is coming up as well. we start in the state of florida where tonight for president trump a governor ron desantis will hold dueling rallies, a preview of a potential primary showdown. -- it's in miami for us. the former president, already attacking his potential 2024 challenger. someone awkward, considering were two days out of the midterm elections. but this could be what is to come come 2024. talk to us, alex. >> yasmin, there is very little that former president donald trump could say right now that would not govern desantis off his reelection track. but that many, ways trump is the reason florida has governor desantis at all. i covered that race, desantis was launched to the front of the republican path in that primary because trump endorsed him. nevertheless, here we are in
12:03 pm
miami, trump campaigning for marco rubio and his reelection. desantis has his own event somewhere else on the, state doesn't seem he was invited out. here not something voters are picking, up on especially given it seems desantis was given a nickname endorsed by trump last night at this rally. referring to ron desantis as ron de sanctimonious. it's a contest that voters here are seeming to weigh in realtime. maybe not 2020, to its one they could see in 2024. listen to what they told me. >> i think trump sees ron as a very valuable competitor. the fact that it's not, invited it bolsters rot as a competitor. >> what happens if trump runs in 2024? sounds like he will. desantis runs in 2024, what happens? >> i don't, know that's going to be a good question, and it will be up to the american
12:04 pm
people to decide. >> you're going to be one of those deciders though, does that put you in a weird spot? deciding between two people you. like >> it's going to be, tough i'll be honest with you. because we love trump and we love rhonda santas. personally, i'm hoping we get four more years of donald trump and eight years of desantis. >> so, wait, is what you think desantis should do? >> absolutely. >> yasmin, what i've been struck by over the course of the last weekend spent in florida, frankly the course of the last year and a half since trump has left the white house and i've been talking with republican voters, many of them have echoed what voters here on the ground have told me. that they don't want to choose potentially between desantis and trump in a 2024 republican primary. but it seems, at least days before trump is going to potentially make his own announcement about running again, that that is immediately where voters minds go. trump is clearly teasing another run. and for desantis, many people think this reelection bid is being used as a springboard to
12:05 pm
something bigger into a presidential run in 2024. >> let me ask you this odd question. we know that -- marco rubio against val demings, saying these things about ron desantis. is there anybody speaking to the saying, i'm not even going to vote for understands as governor in the upcoming midterm elections? i'm going to go ahead and vote for charlie crist. that's not happening, is it? is that what's happening? >> no, absolutely not. these, are for the most part, republican voters who are voting red no matter what. which is why i, say there's very little trump could say about desantis at this point that would knock him off the path to reelection, he's been consistently pulling ahead in this contest. same goes for marco rubio. if anything, this just seems to be trump's way of flexing his political muscle within the party. trying to begin to put a little bit of space between him and desantis set a very early part of the pre primary, at this point. but, again desantis seems like he is on his own path to reelection.
12:06 pm
his team is not overly worried about anything that trump might say here. but, look two days before election, day are the republicans that wish there could be unity on the ticket? sure, but it doesn't seem like that's going to be what they're going to get. >> as always, thank you my friend, good to talk to you this hour. by the, way later on this, our the president is headed to new york. where current governor kathy hochul's once comfortable lead has quickly shrunk. meanwhile, new polling showing biden with a 44 approval rating, about the same level it's been over the last couple months. nbc -- 's just north of new york city in brockville, new york. i'm sure this is where the democrats thought they would be, the resources, sending the president at their two days before the midterm elections. and yet, here they are. >> that's right, yasmin. really, it's marathon sunday here in new york, headed to my brother who's literally about to cross the finish line down there in central park. but we are similarly in the
12:07 pm
sprint to the finish here in this campaign marathon. and right, if you told democrats at the start that president biden would be rounding out the finish line here himself in deep blue new york, campaigning for the governor here, i think that would've sent alarm bells. he said, no way it's going to be that bad. and it really is a measure of how unpredictable election night can be. as i've been talking to democratic strategists, they're worried about this governor's race here in new york, as well as some of the congressional districts around here as well. but they feel more confident about the governor's race in kansas, of all places. a congressional district in a very red part of maine. that has to do with the way that roe v. wade, abortion rights, is seen as a real threat, the protection for abortion rights, in some of those red or states. but some of the blue, states kathy hochul, she's been trying to make that an issue in this campaign but democrats are less concerned about that here, according to the, polls that there are about other issue you know, about crime. which speaks to why we are seeing somewhat unpredictable patterns in the travel of not
12:08 pm
just the president, if you look at where some of the other principles are being here today, vice president complainers, she's campaigning in another blue state, illinois. second gentleman, doug emhoff, he's in washington with patty murray who is facing a tougher than expected campaign. joe biden is campaigning with candidates and dallas, texas, a red state -- it really is an unpredictable pattern, but the degree shows the way that headwinds issues like other issues like crime. and biden will be closing out his campaign tomorrow and yet another deeply, state maryland. they feel much better but that compares, race but the president wants to finish strong in place they know they're going to win. >> let me ask you this, as you're talking about the news coming out of the white house and how democrats specifically are feeling ahead of the midterms. we have this new msnbc poll where it looks like democrats have now passed republicans and their enthusiasm for the midterms, i believe with the 40 8:47 split, the numbers we're
12:09 pm
looking at. what is the reaction that you're hearing there with these numbers? >> that is a critical factor. because, as i've been talking to democrat strategist and white house advisers, that is their number one concern about where that race stands at this point. the democratic base levels of enthusiasm are not near, or have it been at least, in recent weeks, matching what we've seen on the republican side. but, yesterday i was talk to you from that rally in philadelphia with the former president, reunited with his former running mate. it was really a good energy in that crowd, good energy in that room that gave democrats some more relieved that maybe the senate races going to hold on there in pennsylvania. that's why a lot of the focus at this stage has been on turning out the bases. there are some undecided voters, right, yasmin? they're still at there. but as chuck todd is putting it today with that new nbc poll, only 30% of voters say they haven't made up their minds by labor day. take about, that seven and ten
12:10 pm
voters in this midterm election had already decided how they're going to vote by labor day. makes me wonder what we doing last few months running all over the place. but we know there are undecided voters, and they're going to be key in a very close race like the one here. >> what is the time of your brother? have you been tracking him, where is he right now? did he literally just crossed the finish line, did he come under for? >> not under a four. this is his tenth marathon, i think he is running enough for the two of us. i don't know if he wants me to give his exact time. let's just say i'm proud of, it is done a heck of a job. >> he ran 26.2 miles and 75-degree heat! in new york city, through every borough. >> conditions not great. today >> he deserves a medal in that some, no matter what time he finished. congrats to make memories brother. what is his name? >> matt. >> congratulations matt, you just kick butt in the new york city marathon. thanks, mike, good to talk to you. let's go back to one of those swing states, ohio.
12:11 pm
post gop candidate j.d. vance with a slight lead over tim ryan. want to bring it jesse courage from mount vernon, ohio, just northeast of columbus. sorry to make you wait, there i'm a bit of a running third so i had to give the brother their eye shadow in completing the new york city marathon. we know you spoke to tim ryan earlier today. what is the closing message here, ahead of the midterms? >> yasmin, of clarify, we drove from campaign stop to stop, we're not running in between campaign stops out here. >> that's a shame. >> i know. especially right, now eating junk food on the road. we talk to tim ryan a little bit earlier. one of the things i asked him was what he wants people to see when they see j.d. vance with former president donald trump tomorrow night. because mr. trump will be campaigning here in the buckeye state, and j.d. vance has found himself in the image of trump in some ways, he has the former presidents endorsement. that's up against him, ryan a democrat who actually brags about agreeing with the former president on some issues.
12:12 pm
here's what he told us, we also spoke with vance over the weekend. >> trump was perceived as being strong, strong on china, strong on trade, strong on defense. j.d. vance is perceived as an afterthought, trump's rear end. that's why those voters are going to vote for me, they want strong leadership. -- mitch mcconnell. they're going to look at a trump in everyone's going to be wondering, is trump going to emasculate him again from the stage? >> we're going to win because people are very frustrated with the direction of our country. we can't have sky-high, inflation can't have a wide open border and expect people to be happy with your government. i think the democrats had their chance. >> there's a juxtaposition we've been seeing play out here. tim ryan wants people to see j.d. vance as someone who will just do whatever trump wants. likewise, j.d. vance wants people to see each tim ryan as someone who will just do whatever president biden and speaker of the house nancy pelosi want done. , so that's the juxtaposition.
12:13 pm
we're actually about to step into it event with fans here in a downtown area, a rural part of the state. we are just was right in the columbus area. they're making their last, not just hours ago at this point. >> those poll, numbers neck and neck these last couple days. it'll be a nail-biter to the very end. we'll let you quote unquote run to your next event, jesse kirsch. thank you very much. >> i might actually have to. you >> yeah, like a block. ahead this hour, more live reports from the most anticipated races across the country. and our friends the good liars are back with some of, the shall we say, interesting things they heard at donald trump's latest rally. >> -- a sham, they wanted mail-in ballots stole the election. >> you think they planted covid within -- >> bob -- bill gates. >> bill gates? >> my gosh. but up, first we mentioned it a

12:20 pm
that are extremely close and the number of people that voted by mail and early is that we could be having this conversation next saturday or sunday together and still not know the answer. >> does that mean you're booked? i'll tell my booker that we're not sure. >> i'm locked in, you can lock me in. >> about one point you said, if anyone comes on the air and says they know what's going to happen in these tight, races they are lying to you. which i think is a really good point. i also want to talk about this number we're on is the country headed in the right direction. this is something we commonly see, right? 70% of folks polled in this new msnbc poll says the country's been at the wrong direction. 21% saying the right direction. but the thing is, this is very nuanced, right? the answers are incredibly nuanced. but folks, as i mentioned, they think it's headed at the right direction because we don't like the current president. they could be saying it's headed the wrong direction because of the decisiveness, because of the, lives because

of the conspiracy theories. it's hard to really understand that without getting into the details of it. >> the, irishman i'm glad you brought that up because this is something i've tried to talk to folks about. it's almost become meaningless as a predictor of what's going to happen on election. because as you say, when you look at the, number there is a large portion of democrats that say the country is going in the wrong direction because of the supreme court, because they think the republicans have gone off the deep end, because of threats to democracy. all those sorts of things, but they're all going to vote for democrats in this election, in the course of this. my view on it is it's an interesting number, not a number we should be talking about as it relates to how the elections are going to go. because republicans who say it's the wrong track innovate against the democrats, democrats say it's on the wrong track are going to vote more than the democrats. it's almost a meaningless number as protector filtrate happen. >> what about democracy topic the list -- but then trump did, economy
12:22 pm
cost of living at 17. put those, together that's 33% for the economy. but 23% for democracy, that's a pretty big number. especially with the address the president made a couple weeks ago about the threats to democracy, and what president obama has had to say out on the campaign trail. >> i'm really glad nbc added, this they added a couple months ago as a question on the list of issues on this, msnbc was the first to note that it had become the first issue in the country last month. the course of, that this was been something i've been trying to talk about for four or five months. but there's a large segment of the population that is worried about this. the other interesting question in this bill is they matched up, are you more worried about a combination of threats to democracy that's going to happen on choice and another issue, climate or something. where are you more worried about inflation, economy and jobs? what are you going to vote for? actually, threats of democracy and abortion, three or four points more people said they're
12:23 pm
going to vote on that issue than inflation and the economy and jobs. another indication of these countervailing -- which is why, again, as i said before, you'd have to give truth serum to a lot of analysts but anybody that says they know what's going to happen on tuesday night or wednesday night or next at a day is fooling themselves. >> anything you can predict for us, when it comes to pennsylvania? we obviously saw all the resources around that in the last 24 hours. former president obama, there president biden there on the same stage and philly. different stages earlier on in the day. then former president trump on the other side of the state as well. >> my view of it, again it's hard to predict, but i'd rather be in the position of the democrats in pennsylvania today that the republicans. looks like the democrats are going to win the governor is pretty far ahead, how bad of the top of the ticket moving forward, it generates a much more of a poll for the senate,

12:51 pm
democrats, they will continue to do so. but what we try to explore in the field report is trying to understand what is at the heart of the seemingly rightward shift. in south florida, we see the way that many latina still carried a fear of communism. that's why you see many of them joining moms for liberty, or they fear the indoctrination of communism. the video you're showing, now that's from the previous episode we had. but there is some places we find a group of latinos, that perhaps on paper, where democrats, but in their hearts, were socially conservative. and i feel like people identities have a home in the democratic party. the episode that's coming out tonight is actually in virginia's southern district, there are stories about this latino republican who is fighting against congresswoman abigail spanberger. she is bennett and running against crime and appealing to latino voters. so many latino voters are told that those are the issues that we're making them switch

12:53 pm
running. because, suddenly donald trump told them in 2020 that there was this very unique opportunity to win over latino voters. i think at the core of their strategy, regardless of how different latinos are, what they know works is fearmongering. the grievance politics, division, otherizing. that's part of the through line through all the strategery. -- >> i want to talk also about that misconception around abortion. i think there's a common misconception, especially when it comes to analyzing the latino vote. but they are staunchly anti abortion. but if you look at the polls, that is actually not true. 71% of the chinos would not vote for any candidate who supports a nationwide ban on abortions without exception. 70% said they are less likely to vote for a candidate who wants to ban abortions as well as preventative and emergency contraception. where do these misconceptions come? and can democrats make inroads here on the issue of abortion?
12:54 pm
>> absolutely, i think the issue of abortion, i think it's incredible to see is that it's becoming a top issue for a latinas. we feel that in the economy, immigration, health care. now, abortion is at least a top five issue. yes, i believe this points to feeling that coalition. i think it's going to help them and i do remember the days working for hillary clinton and working for the democrats, i do remember the days when we were talking to latinas, especially in spanish, don't say the word -- abortion. i think there was, i thought, myself there was this sense. because many of our family members are catholic, that means we don't support something like that. it's not true. you're the most morally conservative latinos can also have a lot of these social justice values in them. i think that's a difference. >> paola ramos, as always, thank you. in catch the latest episode upfield report tonight 10 pm eastern on msnbc and streaming on peacock. thank you, paula, amazing work
