hour, with the question of whether american democracy will and/or. in two days time, the biggest test yet of this great american experiment, if you think election day is just about the next two years, think again. also tonight, young voters, there are 8 million new eligible voters this time around. -- joins may live tonight to talk reproductive rights and why it is nonsense to say this election is pitted between abortion and the economy. nothing short of a national emergency. good evening. i'm mehdi hasan. this is a perilous and precarious time for american democracy. the future is on the ballot in these critical midterm elections. over the weekend in key swing states like wisconsin, the final early voters were cutting their ballots. election day is two days away.

tonight, i want you to picture this scene as i take you to a post midterm future. it's january the 5th of 2025. by now, you know what that means. it's the date legally mandated by the electoral vote act and codify'd by c u.s. e15 for congress to be in session to count the -- for president of the united states. as a matter of course in his country, a rubberstamp, essentially, what basketball players would call a layup. golfers would call it a gimme. -- no big deal. on january the 6th 2025, 119 congress meeting, for years on from a violent insurrection. you want to imagine that republicans now control both the house and senate, having taken control of both chambers in the red wave of november 2022 and having easily kept hold of them in november 2024. it is not too difficult to

envision, is it? in the presidential election that month, joe biden, faced off against donald trump again and biden triumph again, winning the popular vote by several million and winning the electoral college by a healthy margin again. but now, in january 2025, and in the two months since biden's reelection victory, there's been chaos in key swing states. in pennsylvania, where biden won again, republican governor dog marianna was reelected in 2022, the guy at the capitol on january the 6th 2021, outside the capital. mastriano rejected pennsylvania's -- claiming massive election fraud without evidence. signed off on his own slate of pro trump electors to go to d.c. instead on one fix. meaning michigan republican governor to dickson and republican secretary of state -- both denied the results of the 2020 presidential election were still elected to office back in the 2022 midterms. they've done the same.

filibuster. that act, say governors, could prevent the government from blocking the will of the people in -- handpicked slates of electors to d.c.. that sets up a panel of federal judges who could -- to the supreme court. yes. the supreme court with six conservative justices on it. three of whom are on the bush team in 2000 when the then supreme court handed the presidency to w and three of them were, of course, trump appointees. let's assume the electoral -- in the coming months. let's assume the supreme court prevents a governor mastery ono or a governor michaels from ignoring the will of pennsylvanians or wisconsin nights, two big assumptions. we are still not out of the woods. the result of the election on tuesday could determine the outcome of the 2024 presidential election and the future of american democracy. how? simple. on january the 6th 2021, only hours after yelling at trump on the phone that the insurrection

were trying to kill him, -- voted to overturn the election. mccarthy will not carry on as if trump had done nothing wrong that day and voted to give him another four years in the white house. it didn't work then because the republicans were the minority in 2021. this tuesday, if the vote goes their way, they become the majority in the house in the next congress. a majority that would certainly hold on to november 2024. if those republicans, as a minority in the house, are willing to try to overturn the election results in arizona and pennsylvania, january the 6th 2021, do you think they won't try to do it if they are the majority come january the 6th 2025? when mccarthy has the speakers gavel in his hand? really? you think come january 2025 a republican controlled senate will contain a whole new cast of gop candidates like herschel walker, j.d. vance, dan boulder,

not elect a president, install a president in january 2025. that person's name will almost certainly be donald j trump. joining me now to discuss, the democracy crisis in tuesday's midterms could bring about, our elections coach, presidential historian, new york times bestselling author, writer and author and columnist for the daily beast -- staff writer at the atlantic. a year ago, he published a key headline, trump's next coup has already begun. thank you all for joining me. let me start with, you barked. you wrote in the atlantic piece last year the perspective i just described in my introduction is not remote. people with the motive to make it happen are manufacturing the means, given the opportunity they will act, they are acting already. midterms are a big part of that, aren't they? >> -- it's not so much congress or the house will be very important. as the state offices, the state

a pencil to a knife fight. mitch mcconnell and republicans bring a bazooka. i'm glad joe biden had that televised speech where he called maggie sme fascist movement. he amplify that rhetoric in the past two weeks between now and the final run. he talked about the threat to democracy, the threats of voting rights. however, this should have been the preeminent, if you will, urgent message for the past two years. i'm old enough to remember the 2020 violent insurrection inspired by trump and orchestrated by right-wing allies. and that insurrection, the rnc says was done by oregon -- legitimate political discourse. there were majority of republicans running right now believe in the big lie. which means election deniers are going to potentially win elections. how does a democracy survive when one of the parties hijacked by radicalized, weaponized movements that believes in the big lie and white supremacist -- that they will not concede elections they've lost and their model is viktor orban of

hungry who installed and authoritarian right-wing government which, by the way, republicans have openly said that model for the united states. i know you've had these debates before. it's fascism, is it authoritarianism? what really is fascism? i don't care what your definition is, look at people literally and seriously and take them at their work. they are saying they will take power and maintain power forever. that is fascism. >> have a listen to joshua pirro, the democrat candidate in pennsylvania. >> if you don't think like doug mastriano, if you don't look like him, if you don't invoke like him, if you don't warship like him, if you don't marry like him, you don't count in his pennsylvania. you know how i know that? because i know where he was on january the 6th. >> elections -- is that the right way to take

on mastery ono? what's been the best way in the past to take on the nationalists -- especially christian nationalists on the right? >> if we look at george washington as our example, he had absolute -- a huge representation -- [inaudible] and, so i think that is something that wouldn't be tolerated. the founders were very clear on what should happen in this scenario. if our democracy is threatened, and then we should react as they did. george washington's farewell address after his fifth term, he left voluntarily. he had given up power before after the revolution, he made a warning that hug -- rang true over the last four plus years which is that if we

simply let our own interests rule, if we elect on principled men, i'm quoting almost directly, and principled men who care nothing for any sort of national unity but rather just want to retain power that we will have fallen into the same kind of decay and chaos we viewed the british, that we blamed parliament for. we would deserve what had occurred. we would deserve another revolution. >> we certainly will do. bob, people struggled to take that threat to democracy seriously because they think political violence, armed revolt, things that happens in faraway countries. crews are far away, not in a republic. not here. not america. how do you persuade people that the nightmare scenario in 2024 is not farfetched, isn't a movie storyline, it could be a very well be real life posted midterms -- sorry, that was to bob.

simply don't vote. they can't be good. now, -- take the battleground state of pennsylvania, for example. they have been the target, young voters already smashed through 2018 turnout, from 28,000 voters between 18 and 29 years old early voted in 2018. this year, try 80,000 early votes cast young voters. also remember, it was young voters who were vital to democratic victories in the last two elections. joe biden in the white house. greenberg reports -- up nearly 10% from previous presidential elections. before that, 11% more young voters turned out in 2018 to give democrats at their blue wave and control of the house in donald trump's final two years in office. if that data is not convincing, look at what is happening on the ground in one of the states of america today. check out this video from this pastor posted online by the group next jen america showing

young people lined up waiting to vote in houston texas, a day later on friday, the last day of in-person early voting in texas. that line of young voting doubling in just eight days time. the question before us, though, what will this mean on tuesday night for the overall results? let's ask ramirez, president of nextgen a merica, the nation's largest youth voting organization. christina, thank you so much for coming back on the show. so far, how are early voting numbers for young voters comparing to 2018, 2020, in your view? >> well, we know over 1 million young people have already voted during early voting. those numbers are now to 2018. young voters are the generation that are most likely to vote closer to election day. there's been a huge birth of young people that registered, especially young women that have registered across the country. far outpacing young men, the decision to pull back roe v. wade.

they will be pushing all the way for election aid to make sure young people will come out and vote. in philadelphia right now, we have contacted nine out of ten eligible young voters. here, in pennsylvania, the birthplace of american democracy, it's really coming down to the wire, whether democracy will continue if republicans take power. >> in texas, christina, your home state has become ground zero for republican extremism in many ways. restriction of voting rights on abortion access. what are you hearing from young texans about what's motivating them to get out and vote? >> my state, texas, is one of the battleground states in the country. we also happen to be one of the youngest. only utah and alaska younger. we receive lines and new lines of young people outside campuses wanting to vote -- 71% of the youth vote. republicans have made it harder and harder in our state to vote. they are doing everything they can to shave off margins to keep young people, especially young people of color, in our

state from voting. that's why we are doing it. it's critical to get young votes out and let them know when, where, and how to vote. many of these votes are first-time voters, the first and their families, oftentimes. >> christina, you wrote recently that -- frustrating for young people who expected to see their vote evolved into transformational policies. however, despite delays and tepid legislation, the power of the youth vote has helped win gains on the climate action, racial justice, gun control, and student loan debt. question for you. has the biden administration, especially on these issues you mentioned, done enough, in your view, to motivate, inspire, energize younger voters and get them out to the polls? >> i think you talked about this in the last that we're about how people think young people are not motivated. this is the most politically and progressive generation in american history of young people. you've got huge record turnout the last election. young people are not just turning out to beat fascism or

vote against republicans or donald trump. they are voting for a vision of our country that is more fair, more just, more inclusive, government that will truly represent -- we are at a rally in philadelphia, the most popular young elected official, bernie sanders. our message to young pieper -- people is that -- it gives you student debt cancellation, it gives you that large investments by any country on the planet to tackle -- it's giving us long overdue marijuana reform. young people have a lot more they want to achieve. we are not finished. we are just getting started. -- we'll come out and vote this election. >> last question. you mentioned bernie sanders, one of the oldest members of the senate, he has one of the most unique connections with young voters in this country. what about his message or style of politics resonates with young voters? >> he's authentic. he has old progressive change.

that's the new mantra from conservatives you may have heard recently. the idea being that if you don't have all the results on election night, all the winners and losers confirmed straightaway, and the results are made in ballots come in later and help democratic candidates and not republican once -- that's evidence of deliberate electoral fraud, political corruption. now, that's total nonsense, of course. it goes back to donald trump on election night 2020 saying this. >> we don't want this to find any ballots at 4:00 in the morning and add them to the list. >> today, you have trump loyalists like former acting director of intelligence, richard burnout, described as a twitter troll, going viral with twitter tweets like this one. quote, any state that doesn't count all the votes and announces the winner tuesday night is incompetent. here's the thing, not only as a state which doesn't do that necessarily incompetent, it may

very well be a state with a republican controlled legislature. mail-in ballots have to be processed, and phillips opened, signatures verified, before they are tabulated, tallied, counted. one of the main reasons it takes so long to do all that with mail-in ballots in the key swing states is because republican lawmakers in those states have made sure that's the case. in pennsylvania, for example, a state law passed unanimously by a republican-led general assembly in march 2024 election officials to even open mail-in ballots on 7 am on election day. the same thing in swing state wisconsin. in fact, in march, a bipartisan bill that would have allowed local election clerks in the county counting absentee ballots today earlier died in the republican-controlled state senate. in swing state michigan, report ap officials could start processing just two days before, with most results being reported from the states on election night will be from voting on election day or during the early voting period.

look, it doesn't have to be this way. 38 states, including red states texas and florida, allowing election officials to process mail ballots prior to the election. ten states, one in five, allow both processing and counting of mail-in ballots to begin before election day. but not in michigan, wisconsin, or pennsylvania. the truth is, if republicans in those swing states really wanted a result on the night, they'd be pushing for that to happen. but they are not. and they are blocking it. they are moaning about election integrity. they complain it takes too long to get the result and suggests it's evidence of incompetence or election fraud. at the same time, they guarantee that any measures to speed up the processing and counting of those mail ballots are just killed in that state legislature they control. that's not just dishonest on their part. it is straight-up gaslighting. remember that on tuesday night. coming up next, actress and

this guy loves a great offer. so let's see some hustle! for the first time in nearly 50 years, americans are heading to the polls without a constitutional protection guaranteeing reproductive freedom. the renewed fight this year for a right to choose has fired up parts of the democratic base, especially young women. the new nbc news poll finds abortion is among the top five issues voters care about most while casting a ballot in these midterms. a recent kaiser family foundation survey found a supreme court ruling that overturned roe has made 50% of voters more motivated to cast a ballot in today's election. we are constantly told democrats should focus more on the economy and less on abortion. is that really the case? let's ask actress and activist

sophia bush who joins me now. thank you so much for coming back on the show on the eve of these midterms. some say democrats can't pay too much on abortion and not the economy. some say they didn't campaign enough on abortion. where do you stand on all this? we talk about kitchen table issues. shouldn't abortion be part of that? oh. i don't know about anybody else but i can't hear sofia. -- >> even top actresses forget the mute button. go for it. >> what are you going to do? i was going to say, thanks so much for having me back on today, great to be here. it's a fact that abortion is not an economic issue. when you talk about the ability to participate in the economy, in the workforce to plan your day to make money for yourself and your family, that is an economic issue.

we are forced to carry unwanted pregnancy to term they are often forced to drop out of school, often forced to lose their job. we are now getting into the issue of what they are not -- discussing safe pregnancy. the act as if presidency is not a life-threatening health condition -- both of which are in fact true, and absolutely affect not just -- you might carry a pregnancy, but everyone in our lives. >> sophia, you wrote a column for glamour magazine saying in part, quote, our right to reproductive choices is fundamental to democracy so much so that societal changes that signify a backsliding democracy, one of the surefire things that happens anywhere where equality is being chipped away is the rollback of the rights of women, particularly those two bodily economy. without reproductive choice, we have no autonomy. mastriano, josh shapiro running

against doug mastriano in pennsylvania, he made that point last night. that you can't be the party of freedom if you are taking freedom away from women. voting rights and abortion rights are intertwined. >> absolutely. about a backsliding democracy comes from the international institute for democracy and electoral assistance. one of the things they speak about is that when a country begins suspending authoritarianism, you see curves on women's rights accelerating. this is the first time in history that we have had our supreme court, what is meant to be the highest court in the land, remove rights from americans. you start hearing from the horror stories. you hear about a ten-year-old rape victim in ohio who is forced to travel for care. a little girl who has not just -- not just men in power, some women saying this could be a

blessing for her. anyone who's ever been through a sexual assault understands that you cannot force a person to compound their trauma. you should not. this is a moral issue. it's also an issue of medical safety. when you see this rollback, these curbs of women rights asylum riding around the country, you see women sharing stories about finding out that there -- which means it's an un-viable pregnancy, it's terminal. these women are being -- to go septic, to risk their own lives stories working on this issue talking about they -- in states with trigger bands. talk about pregnancy, -- [inaudible] we are acting as though this is normal.

it's not normal. >> nothing about our current politics is normal. you just painted a picture about how things are and how bad things are gonna get for women's rights, abortion rights. paint the picture for me, how bad are things going to get for american democracy as a whole? >> it's a terrifying time. we are literally on the razor's edge. there are a lot of people who've been sounding the alarm for years about this growing autocratic movement. it's not just happening here. it's happening around the world. we saw people in doing not see salutes in italy this morning. it's horrifying what you see happening around the world. the nationalism, the othering of groups. what that does is it continues to hold and breed power. small groups of people who don't like the idea of equality. there's a lot of people who don't like the idea of women having the autonomy to plan their families on their own terms. when you talk about what this

means for democracy as a whole, you can really see how these issues are related. you can see how those in power want to hold it and withhold it from so many of us. from folks like you, from folks like me. you've got people, you mentioned this earlier on the show, saying that, you know, maybe we're talking too much about abortion. we should be talking more about the economy. what we need to be talking about is democracy itself surviving. again, you can't that these are not interconnected issues. for example, a former guy who loves autocracy and wanted to turn america into his own personal oligarchy -- mitch mcconnell doing that work. from our hallowed hall -- raises our deficit every year of his presidency -- he cut tax money from which people who can certainly afford to pay their taxes. what we've seen in the biden

administration is [inaudible] that is the largest drop in the deficit in the united states history. democrats are the -- are doing the economy, they are doing the work that they -- we are arguing that perhaps the republicans are going to be the ones to fix the economy. maybe democracy is worth it. republicans voted against lowering gas prices who also -- i guess our access to birth country. democracy does not survive on these issues, we will lose it all. >> we are out of time. just listening to you speak -- we should put you out more. i wonder in the next midterm elections, the next elections you will be running yourself. sophia busch, thank you so much. always a pleasure. >> thank.
