headquarters in new york city. millions of americans are still on pins and needles tracking vote counts. we're expecting new numbers tonight from two of the most crucial counties in arizona and nevada where senate races and the governor's race in arizona have yet to be called. how local election officials are snuffing out conspiracy theories before they can take hold. plus, president biden heading to cambodia as we speak, flexing new political muscle on the world stage. how the midterm ripple effect could affect the war in ukraine and america's relationship with china, just days before biden and xi jinping meet. a remarkable find if america's history with space travel. >> it's very rare to find something like this. we were blown away.
10:02 am
it was the last thing we expected to find. >> coming up, the story how divers searching for world war ii planes found a piece of the challenger. we start with the senate races in those three critical states. as more votes are counted it's looking better and better for democrats. we started hearing from republicans amping up their claims of election fraud. we heard it from donald trump late last night saying, quote, very strange things are happening with the votes cast in nevada and arizona. election officials have been here before. they pushed back hard against the former president. >> unfortunate comments like the one that came out today from former president trump gets certain people very fired up and they're convinced we are doing
10:03 am
things that are inappropriate or against the law. that's just not the case. >> in arizona where roughly 500,000 votes are yet to be counted there's this from kari lake. >> i think they're slow rolling our victory. they want to take the air out of this movement. they can't do it. >> we'll see when the results come in. >> it's offensive for kari lake to say these people behind me are slow rolling this when they're working 14 to 18 hours. i really hope this is the end of that now. we can be patient and respect the results when they come out. >> now let's get to antonio hilton in atlanta where walker and warnock are reupping their campaigns ahead of the run-off. stephanie gosk is in las vegas and vaughn hillyard is in
10:04 am
phoenix. vaughn, what's happening? >> reporter: we'll be getting more results released. last night there were 75,000 votes. tonight could give us an indication where the senate race is going, whether blake masters has a shot to win this and overcome the deficit he's facing. in the governor's race there's a very tight margin. we'll get about 40,000 ballots today that are going to trend in democrats' favor. those are the last mail ballots received. then there's the next batch of ballots that will give us a greater indication of whether blake masters or kari lake has a shot. those are hand delivered ballots by voters. republicans anticipate these going heavily in their favor. the question is by how much. that's the major question here. in the meanwhile what you're hearing kari lake talking about
10:05 am
intentional slow walking which there's no evidence of. you have mark finch the secretary of state candidate suggesting there are anomalies of the election results. no evidence of that. you have donald trump contending there's cheating. no evidence of that. individuals online are posting conspiracy theories which are getting propagated. maricopa county pushed back. there was a vote that made its way around town of a woman with glasses inside here. maricopa said not every woman with glasses is katie hobbs. please refrain from making assumptions about workers who wear glasses. there's a woman behind me in glasses and that ain't katie hobbs either. you see folks making excuses and conspiracy theories much like what we saw in 2020. chris? >> it's comical if it wasn't so
10:06 am
ridiculous and sad and potentially destructive that they had to put out a tweet saying no everybody with glasses is katie hobbs. stephanie, where do things stand in nevada? >> reporter: chris, the last couple days has been mail-in ballots. they have broken strongly for cortez masto. two thirds are going to her. we're at this point with about 50,000 mail-in ballots to be processed. unclear how many. if they continue to break the way they have been breaking cortez masto could be in the lead quickly. we're expecting to hear in the next couple hours how many votes will drop in clark county. you could potentially have cortez masto in the lead by the end of the day. >> we're going to be waiting for
10:07 am
that. antonio, as we wait to see how the votes break, control of the u.s. senate could hinge on the run-off in georgia. set the stage for us. what's happening there now? >> reporter: once again things could all come down to what happens in georgia. both candidates have already kicked off the new phase of their campaign. last night republican herschel walker held a large rally with senator ted cruz by his side. then raphael warnock held an event here in atlanta in which he really spelled out a new and very direct message in which he's clearly going to be going after more of the independent, middle of the road voters, the people who likely split their tickets, voted for kemp, but then voted for him to be senator. he's looking to get more people who might be in that category on
10:08 am
his side. he spelled this out as a campaign that's about competence and character, right and wrong. take a listen. >> we all knew this election would be close. i've done this before. we've done this before. we know how to win a run-off. >> reporter: the run-off is set for december 6th. people will be able to start voting early, just a couple days after thanksgiving. this is going to be different. there's no percent threshold. it's simply who gets the most votes. >> fascinating stuff from all of you. thank you so much. i want to bring in ryan nobles, jeff bennett, chief washington correspondent for pbs and carlos
10:09 am
cabello. he joins us from the meeting of world leaders in egypt. basil, it's been fascinating to watch how election officials have responded to these conspiracy theories, almost at the speed of light, pushing back in real time. has that had a role in keeping conspiracy theories from spiraling out of control? >> it's important it's being done. let me first say that. i think there are folks who want to keep these conspiracies going. kari lake started talking about this before the election was held. we see that for some republicans, some, they believe there's a benefit to keep this narrative going. the reality is that -- being a former party leader, i worked with a lot of election officials, democrats and republicans. they're committed to their work.
10:10 am
they care very deeply about the outcome of elections. quite frankly they don't want their lives threatened, the lives of their families threatened. not only is there a civic duty they're carrying out, they're also very concerned about their families. as time goes on and these deniers and lies keep coming out, you'll see more and more election officials coming out saying we have a job to do and we're not going to put ourselves, families or the legitimacy of our work at risk. >> or for that matter control of congress or control of state houses. look, carlos, nbc news has been tracking how election deniers
10:11 am
faired. look at these numbers. they won 7 and lost 24. is that a message from republican voters they don't want these conspiracy theories, they don't want this to dominate the gop playbook anymore? >> chris, that is one of the big stories of this election cycle. everywhere in the country in competitive races candidates who lie about election results were punished. that was done in a very obvious way in new hampshire. in georgia as well where people intentionally split their ticket to punish candidates who were lying about elections. what donald trump is doing, what kari lake is doing is a losing strategy. voters are sick of people lying about election results. politicians have had a bad reputation with regards to honesty at a long time. when you lie about something so obvious like the result of an
10:12 am
election, people do not tolerate it. these candidates are doubling down on a losing strategy and it's going to cost them. >> jeff, i want to read a member from the head of the michigan republican party. it says that it wasn't just voters who stayed away from donald trump backed candidates, but donors. quote, long time donors to the party remained on the sidelines despite constant warnings of the outcome we saw on election day. a statewide sweep and democratic rule in lancing, something not seen in near 40 years in michigan. that has to raise some, if not huge, red flags from republicans in washington who have to decide whether they'll stand with trump or not. what have you heard? >> it's a great point. donald trump is the de facto head of the republican party.
10:13 am
the gop is in many ways crafted in his image. the problem that donald trump has is that he's racking up a record of losses. he lost the house for republicans in 2018. he lost the white house in 2020. he lost the senate for republicans in 2021. now in 2022 republicans underperformed. trumpism will be around for quite a while. the gop has invested too heavily in it for it not to happen. donald trump himself, the question is will he be a diminished character and will there be other lawmakers who claim ownership of the trump mantle, whether it's ron desantis or brian kemp. think back to the 2020 election. after brian kemp did his job and refused to call the election for donald trump, donald trump made him public enemy number one. brian kemp didn't engage with trump at all.
10:14 am
he focus on his work and serving the people of georgia. he went in to the election with a plus 50 approval rating and he won handedly. there are republican lawmakers who are writing a blueprint with how you move forward with tax cuts, deregulation, border issues without the baggage that donald trump brings to the table. >> i want to go to capitol hill. a lot of democrats are saying why is kevin mccarthy already acting like he's speaker? >> reporter: the speaker's office itself, they put out a statement saying democrats have not given up hopes to hold on to the majority in washington. gave a stark warning to kevin mccarthy who is already measuring the drapes in the
10:15 am
speaker's office. they say, quote, in case he's forgotten the minority leader is still the minority leader and shouldn't count his chickens before they hatch. this is response to a letter that kevin mccarthy sent to republicans. pelosi and her team, they're not ready to say they believe they'll hold on to the majority. they're contending they have a path to do so. the path is more wide open for republicans and kevin mccarthy, part of why he's taking on such a bold statement to say he'll be the next speaker. it's in doubt and it's in doubt that even if republicans take the majority, that kevin mccarthy is guaranteed to hold on that spot. >> that's a good point. i want to play what we've heard.
10:16 am
>> kevin mccarthy has not done anything to earn my vote. there's a number of members of the republican conference who share the same concerns. i expect there to be a challenge. >> there's some serious questions about leadership in a time that there should have been a massive red wave. >> will you support kevin mccarthy for speaker? >> we're supporting folks that will empower members. >> carlos, what are you hearing? what's the chances that kevin mccarthy stays on as minority leader or becomes speaker? >> i heard that jim jordan has been calling members, asking them how they feel about the speaker's race. not declaring he's going to run or challenge mr. mccarthy, but taking temperatures. that leads you to believe there's an amount of members who may not be ready to commit to kevin mccarthy. i remind people, kevin mccarthy ran for speaker in 2015.
10:17 am
there were 248 house republicans and he couldn't secure the votes then. this time around there might be 220, 221, 222 house republicans. it's going to be harder. there's goodwill for kevin mccarthy in the conference. he's liked by many of his colleagues. this is an uphill battle for him. >> so interesting. thank you. president biden is abroad with unexpected momentum thanks to key midterm wins, but also an improving economy. does that translate to political power? plus, florida deja vu after nicole hammers the eastern coast. also secretary austin is speaking to vietnam vets. you're watching "chris jansing reports" only on msnbc. y on msnc

time for the president. does that change his approach at any of these meetings? >> reporter: chris, it certainly according to white house officials gives the president momentum on the world stage. that's their view of things. as you said, this is not the position they expected the president to be in going into these various summits. their sense is that he heads into the meeting stronger politically back at home, but also with the good economic data. that emboldens the president in the white house's view as he goes into these meetings and tries to rally world leaders around various policies. it's particularly helpful in white house's view with the president meeting with president xi jinping. that's where the agenda is vast and president xi is coming into
10:25 am
that emboldened and president biden has momentum at his back. at the same time, the president can point to what the u.s. is doing economically and how those numbers, those inflation numbers, say that the u.s. is in a better position. he said the u.s. is doing better than other countries when it comes to dealing with global economy. he can make the case that world leaders need to continue to rally around ukraine. the war in ukraine has been a drag on the economy. the feeling is that the president is in a better position coming here, having democrats performing better than expected. if he was handed a number of losses, he would be seen as weakened and people wouldn't take him as seriously. >> jeff, i think 72 hours ago some world leaders were wondering whether president biden was becoming a lame duck. they could see the numbers.

they saw what happens happening. now they might look at him differently. my question is how much does this help his domestic agenda, if at all? >> it's a great point. the momentum accounts for a lot in politics and in international diplomacy and the national security adviser jake sullivan told reporters the president heads into this week of diplomacy with the went at his back, even as he's facing increased rivalry from china. carol mentioned his meeting with xi jinping. there's more provocations from north korea and the war in ukraine. the other thing that's important in the view of white house officials is the president can say there's semblance of normalcy returning to not just domestic politics, but international relationships. the u.s. can step in and fill this void that existed during the president trump era, during the era of america first policies. this comes back to your question
10:27 am
about domestic politics, we often hear the president say in his view, the chief challenge of this era, there's this fight between democrats and autocracies. democraies have to prove they can do big things. he can point to the infrastructure bill passed, the historic investment in climate change policy and he gets to say that democrats to some degree were rewarded for that. this is one of those things where in the view of the white house that electoral success begets electoral success. >> jeff, as the president's fortunes go up, the opposite can be said about vladimir putin. the war in ukraine continues to go downhill, particularly after russia's retreat from kherson. i want to play an assessment.
10:28 am
take a listen. >> vladimir putin's head is exploding. this has gone so badly. >> i wonder how putin's shrinking power is viewed on capitol hill and how it might impact decisions on how much aid to give ukraine. >> it's a great question, especially if the white house and hill leaders can make the connection between funding and zelenskyy's success in ukraine, especially with the retreat as you mentioned in key areas around ukraine from vladimir putin. it's one of those things we'll have to wait and see. if republicans do take the house, even with a single digit margin, democrats have more leeway in getting the funding and resources they want and need to send to ukraine, even if there are republicans who aren't so inclined to do it. >> thank you all so much. floridians now reeling from deadly tropical storm nicole
