6:00 am
but something changed on tuesday, which is given some people hope. i'm grateful for both of. you thank you for being, here valencia johnson is the founder and chief impact officer ten 63 west broad, gio phillip of h is a journalist and the author of h. spot, the feminine pursuit of happiness. thanks to both of, you. it just a moment, i will be joined by republican-elect mike lawler who defeated democrat sean patrick maloney for his house seat in the 17th district of new york. another hour of velshi begins right now. >> good morning to you, i'm ali velshi, it is saturday november the 12th, four days since the 2022 midterm elections. and here's where things stand and what is still to come. control of congress remains up in the air. control of neither the senate nor the house is certain as of
6:01 am
yet. in the house, you need 218 seats for a majority, and right now republicans have 211 and democrats have 203, meaning that of the 22 races that are still uncalled by the nbc news decision to ask, democrats would need to win 15 of them, republicans would need to take seven of them to win control of the house. democrats are currently leading in 11 of those races, and republicans are leading in ten. if all of that holds, republicans would win the house, but with a very slim majority. in the senate, there was a call late last night in arizona, incumbent democrat mark kelly is the projected winner over the republican blake masters. kelly is a retired navy captain, an astronaut, in the gun reform advocate, former positive get -- gabby giffords was nearly assassinated in 2011. masters, a venture capitalist who has no previous political experience, is a trump endorsed election denier, a liar really,
6:02 am
who last week trying to convince the crowd that trump never threatened nuclear war. also in arizona, in the extremely port and secretary of state race, the democrat, adrienne fontes is the protective winner over the republican mark finchem. finchem is an intense anti-democratic election denier, liar, who's described himself as a member of the far-right oath keepers. with the call for senator mark kelly means is that republicans and democrats now you told 14 seats in the senate. republicans need to win two more seats to secure a majority. democrats only need one since they all the tie breaking vote with vice president kamala harris. two races remain uncalled. nevada in georgia. georgia is headed for a runoff, we will know the results until next month. with that said, democrats are increasingly optimistic about nevada. incumbent democrat catherine cortez masto trails a republican, adam laxalt, a trump endorsed election denier, perhaps we will call it a liar, by an ultra thin margin, fewer
6:03 am
than 1000 votes. that does not sound up then, but the remaining ballots to be counted are coming from clark county, which is traditionally a democratic stronghold. that is las vegas in the battleground of washout county. analysts expect a majority of the ballots that still need to be counted to favor senator cortez masto, but how much is the remaining question. notably, nevada does not have an automatic recount law, although the loser can request one while paying the associated costs. also in nevada, another new call. nbc news projects the republican, joe lombardo, will be the winner in the governor's race over the incumbent democrat steve sisolak. lombardo is the clark county sheriff. he was endorsed by trump, but notably did not to his campaign to the former president and has specifically stated but the 2020 election was not stolen. so for those people who are wondering about how lumbar the winds as governor, and yet laxalt has not been called for the senate, there is a distinction.
6:04 am
lombardo is not an election denier. adam laxalt is an election denier. instead lombardo by the way his campaign focused on crime in the economy, which was particularly hard hit both in nevada into las vegas specifically because of the pandemic, and the resulting loss of the convention business. and he is so far the only democratic incumbent governor to lose reelection this year. and as i mentioned earlier, the senate race in georgia between the democratic incumbent, the reverend senator raphael warnock in the trump endorsed former football star herschel walker is headed to a runoff next month, as neither candidate said to secure the 50% that is needed to win outright. nbc's first read report that the national republican senatorial committee is also -- already out with a 266,000 dollar tv ad campaign for the runoff. according to the press, release the democratic senatorial committee plans to spend $7 million on field organizing. now speaking of all these trump
6:05 am
endorsement by the way, the insurrectionist former president is receiving a huge amount of criticism from within the republican party even those who are normally in his corner. like fox news personality, saying that trump is to blame for the red wave that was not. in response, trump was set to announce another run for the presidency this coming tuesday has taken to social media to lash out at his former supporters, and also the florida governor ron desantis, saying a whole lot of while the nonsensical stuff that we will dig deeper into on tomorrow's show. actually, forget that, i'm not gonna brag to the riddick into, it because you would want to watch, it but it is actually important. we'll be joined by former -- trump's former fixer michael cohen, who was a part of that stuff at one point. he has 11 cited to how trump thinks, and you need that insight. one state where republicans did particularly poorly is one that we have followed very very closely on the show. michigan. and what the detroit free press calls a scathing election
6:06 am
postmortems memo, the head of the michigan republican party laid that blame on poor candidates with close ties to trump who turned off major donors. and he wrote in part, quote, at the end of the day, high quality substantive candidates and well-funded campaigns are still critical to winning elections. we struggled in both. in quote. he had a lot more to say, particularly about the gubernatorial candidate, to dixon. and let's go to liz cheney right now, so it member of congress until january, a lifelong republican, and a conservative, who backed three democratic candidates this election, called the red wave that wasn't a quote, clear victory for team normal. >> i think about the extent to which it was a victory for team normal. i think that you saw many candidates who were reflecting sort of the election denialism of president trump rejected.
6:07 am
people talk about donald trump these days as the biggest loser. and i think that's true, if you look at the record from 2018 from 2020, from the special election in 2021, from 2022, i think that is an important point. i also think though that as a party, we need to be clear that we will not be, we should not be embracing him, even if you are a winner, because what he is doing and what advocates is so dangerous. >> speaking of team normal, that is exactly the strategy is by democrat adam fresh, who isn't unexpectedly close contests with the incumbent republican, lauren boebert for her seat. one place democrats are hoping to gain ground. this is a colorado, race and they're now separated by just 1000, 122 votes. colorado law requires a recount where the gap is 0.5% or less. and as you can see, now the gap
6:08 am
is about 0.4%. open to the colorado democratic party chair, fresh built a, quote coalition of normal, and quote specifically quoted all moment republicans. lauren boebert is not a normal republican. she is an extraordinary figure in the history of american politics for all of the wrong reasons. she is one of the loudest voices supporting claims of election fraud in the big lie, and she's actually normally one of the loudest voices period, as you may recall, when she had an outburst and shouted during president biden's state of the union address back in march as he was discussing his late son, beau biden. she's also an extreme proponent of multiple conspiracy theories, especially qanon, and also believes in the abolishment of the separation of church and state, which is in the first amendment, in the bill of rights. and like i, said not one we would traditionally call a quote, normal republican. at the same time, some of the gop had success being well, normal republicans. classic conservatives. not maga maniacs who want to destroy mayor kim democracy. and i'm glad to talk to one of
6:09 am
them. join me now is a republican representative elect, mike lawler of new york. he's currently a member of the new york state assembly. he defeated sean patrick maloney, who was the head of the democratic congressional campaign committee and a major upset. e >> sir, good to have you here. thank you for joining us this morning. congratulations on your victory. i want to ask for your commentary and everything i've just said. you heard me talk about not normal republicans, before we talk about election deniers, you've heard me talk about liz cheney, you've heard me talk with adam fresh. tell me how this all relates to how you ended up defeating a very prominent democrat in upstate new york. >> well i think that there are a number of factors that played into my defeating sean maloney. number one was the redistricting fiasco in new york. democrats try to gerrymander new york's congressional maps down to four republicans, in 22 democrats. ultimately, a democrat appointed court of appeals,
6:10 am
through that matt, out appointed a special master, and provided a fair map which is in part why there are four republican pick ups. they were gonna have 11 republicans going to congress out of new york. and probably single-handedly delivering the majority to the republicans when all votes are counted. the second factor here was the fact that democrats control everything in washington, albany, and new york city, for the first time in our nation's history. and voters in new york especially we're looking for a balanced approach. and i think that the top two issues that we dealt with, and then our state leaders focused on throughout the campaign, where inflation and crime. and in both cases, those issues were top of mind to voters. i think as we move forward as a republican party, and frankly as a country, we need to get back to the business of focusing on the issues that matter, and those solutions to deal with them. and that is the campaign that iran, that is what i was focused on throughout.
6:11 am
i never deviated from that. i never talked about frankly things that didn't matter to voters. in just a bit laser focus on it. and you know, looking back, i flipped a 2 to 1 democratic district in the state assembly two years ago. there's 22,000 more democrats than republicans in that assembly district. this congressional district has 70,000 more democrats than republicans. i did it by going into every community, talking to every voter, regardless of their, race their ethnicity, their gender, their religion, and making the case to them for change. and obviously, we were rewarded on tuesday with the big win. >> and so let me ask you, this because if you are a republican in this election, in this year, in this moment, there are people who could characterize you not knowing who you are as being a member of a party of chaos. as a member of not normals as liz cheney says. a member of a party which has a lot of election deniers in it. and this, morning i've use the
6:12 am
term normal. normal republicans. what are you as a republican? what you want to be seen as? because others in your party have painted the picture right now but you either have to distance yourself from, embrace, or redefine. >> look, i think where we are endangering this country is everybody on both sides are so quick to immediately ascribed adjectives to the other side, and look to torpedo them purely based on politics. >> and i'm on your side on this, but election deniers are election deniers. that is not a characterization. >> i've said from the very beginning that joe biden won the election and january six was wrong, period. but i didn't equivocate on that. the bottom line here is this. as we move forward, i think it's incumbent upon every elected official to cut the crap and focus on how we address the challenges that we are facing as a nation. and they are real.
6:13 am
and the one party rule just does not work. that was a big part of why i won. we need to have a balanced approach on all sides. i think we need to be focused on how we address these challenges as a country together. the bottom line for me, and why i have been successful in politics is because i have been able to reach across the aisle, i am among the most bipartisan voting records in the state legislature, and that is what i am going to do as a member of congress. i am not interested in relitigating the past. i'm focused entirely on solving the problems that we are dealing with now and how we move our country forward in the future. >> people like you empowered in the republican party? or you endangered species? >> while, i've been successful in two consecutive elections. so i think there's a lot of people within the republican party who are very focused on trying to address the
6:14 am
challenges. obviously, anytime you have a conference, there is going to be voices from all parts of the party and across the spectrum. and you have to work through those and you have to find commonality and move the party in the direction that you would like to see it. and i think that there's a lot of opportunity here, and i think moving forward for everyone in the both parties. i think it is incumbent upon everybody to block out some of the more extreme of voices and focus in on how we move both parties in the country in a better direction. >> at a former fabric and gop communications chief, tara setmayer on the show earlier today, and she said look, republicans need an off ramp from donald trump but a lot of people are thinking that is ron desantis. you are one of those. she didn't agree, she didn't take roundest of the right off ramp for republicans. you do you think ron desantis might be the future of the
6:15 am
republican party. >> look, i think a lot of republicans agree with many of the policies that were enacted under the trump administration, there was a lot of success with respect to foreign policy, with respect to the economy, and i think a lot of republicans certainly see what ron desantis has done down in florida, and support a lot of the work that he has been able to do over the last four years. obviously, florida voters gave him a resounding victory on tuesday night, and i think that the question moving forward is that we have a lot of rising stars in the party, i think it is always good for any party and i was healthy for a political process to have those voices rise up, and move forward. and so we will see what happens in the coming weeks and months ahead, and obviously the former president will make a decision on what he's going to do, whether not he is going to run, and ultimately it is up to the voters to decide who they support in a republican primary.
6:16 am
donald trump is probably going to declare his presidency on tuesday. will you support him if he becomes the republican nominee in the next election? >> look, there is a lot of time to decide who is running, who is not. i think it is premature. >> you have to have thought about that all the time, come on. mike, you are a good guy. you are irregular gassed on my show. you can't possibly have doubt about whether or not you are going to support donald trump as the presidential nominee. let's be honest. pretend we are not on tv. guys, cut the cameras. we are not on tv. this is you and me talking in the room. will you support donald trump? >> you know what, i have thought about that for the entirety of this campaign. i thought about getting across the finish line and getting to work. that was the focus for me. it was not about the 2024 election. it was about november 8th. >> so you might support donald trump if he is the republican nominee for president? >> there is a lot of time between now in 2024 to let this play out. i think that the objective of trying to litigate this within
6:17 am
24 hours, on this news cycle, it does not serve anything. >> we had four years to litigate donald trump. >> listen, a lot of the policies he enacted, people supported. >> he is a liar. he undermines democracy. you are not. you do not undermine democracy. you actually support democracy. >> i do some more democracy. >> he doesn't. january six was his thing. right? >> listen, january six was wrong. and everybody who was involved in storming the capitol should be held accountable for it. the objective moving forward is to get this country in a better direction, cut the crap, and focus on how we solve the problems we are facing. i have said, you know, i am excited to see it. there are a lot of rising stars in the party. i am excited to see how this plays out over the coming months and years ahead. my focus is on getting to we're,
6:18 am
january 3rd. i want to do the peoples business. that is why iran in the first place. that is what my focuses. >> all right, we are putting you in the maybe column. let me know when that changes. thanks for being with us this morning. that the republican republican congressman. he will be representing new york 17th district. congratulations on the victory. still ahead, hundreds of election liars and doubters around four seats across the nation. many of them have won. democracy did prevail in several major races. right after the break, we are live in arizona. the democratic senator mark kelly won a tough campaign for reelection late last night. he defeated trump backed blake masters. plus, an update on the war in ukraine. it is a little bit closer to home. republican majority in the house could mean a shift in support for the u.s. defense of ukraine. you are watching velshi. velshi. remember this? but i spoke to our advisor, and our vanguard investments are on track. “we got this, babe.” so go do what you love.

against election deniers in key battleground states that decided the 2020 presidential election. any threat to american democracy persists with more than 150 election liars and doubters. they're winning races across the country. according to an nbc news tally, 268 liars and doubters ran for governor. the secretary of state, the u.s. senate, the house of representatives, as of last night, 167 and had won their races. 86 had lost. 13 remain uncoupled. two candidates are close to runoffs. let's look at the bigger waited to see how election deniers fared. in pennsylvania, it is where they nominated the secretary of state. the government candidate, joshua pirro, he defeated dogmas yeah. nobody, way he has yet to concede. that is a surprise to no one. and they are competing for the state open senate seat. john fetterman defeated trump backed republican documented oz. he has publicly raised questions about the 2020 election.
6:22 am
voters reelected the entire democratic ticket for governor. -- that includes an entire slate of election deniers. nevada called several key races last night. joe lombardo on see the democratic governor, steve sisolak. he handed the gop their first governor pick up -- -- there is also the attorney general and secretary of state races. this was called overnight by in the nbc news. the election denier spirited to lose to the democrat. they are gonna be joining me just a moment. meanwhile, democrat mark kelly was declared winner of arizona senate raise overnight. they defeated the mega candidate, blake masters. -- he weighed in on his own failing social media platform. it is called truth social. possibly corrupt officials have

lost control retained election in arizona. a new election must be called for immediately any characteristic all caps that donald trump likes to use. we still don't have a further result in the arizona governor race. it is too close to call right now. conspiracy peddling republican nominee kari lake did not hesitate to lash out against election workers. she accused them of intentionally slowing down the counting of votes. overall, tuesday's results are being held as a victory -- they took office in key states. they could handpick winners in future elections. -- they were still elected to various posts across the country. that could really spell trouble. for more on this, i am joined by michael shore. a longtime political journalist and old friend. with whom i've spent many days on the road covering elections in the past. it is nice to see you. thank you for getting a so
6:24 am
early for us this morning. i want to go right to this one with you. sure, the world is a better place than it looked like it was gonna be on monday if you like democracy. but a lot of election deniers did win. more won than lost. in key races, michigan, pennsylvania, possibly arizona, a lot of them did lose. but a lot of them still won. >> yeah. it is great to see you as well. it is going to be on with you. as early as it is here in california, when we look at these election deniers, one of the things you have to keep in mind is that most republicans and most house members did not want to accept the results of the 2020 elections. what you are looking at is people who were running on what they did in 2020. you are reelecting over 200 members of the republican house. by the fall, you are electing a lot of election and iron. this is an election that is not based only on election denial. for a lot of people, that was not even an issue. you have to look at a voter,
6:25 am
the republican voter, they may be pro-life. that might be the number one issue in some of these very red states. they could come out and vote for someone. , look i don't agree with this person. my number one issue is abortion. i'm gonna vote in that direction. this is encouraging for democrats. look at fuentes. look at nevada, arizona. this is mark in arizona. you had jim in about a losing. these are the people who are the most vulnerable for the 2020 election. those are the people who said they were going to actually look back and turn over the results of the election in their state. this is a big victory in places where it mattered most. i think, that and, this is encouraging. the people that were election deniers -- this is the second district. i think a lot of those people were beat. >> in california, in that early
6:26 am
in the morning, i wouldn't turn on the tv. yeah had a conversation with mike lawler. that election felt like a more normal election. there were some redistricting of. this was a normal republican running against a normal democrat. law learned an election denier. he likes to sanders. he does not like trumpy. think the party used the words that you used. they need to move forward and not move back. when pressed, i asked if you would support andra when he is the nominee. trump is going to declare on tuesday. he would not answer that question. >> a lot of them will not. it is your show. that is the only time you can watch it. what a gleaned from that interview, what i know from having spoken to a lot of these candidates in this cycle, the republicans are going to have to feel their way around this right now. look, he is around a santa
6:27 am
supporting candidate. >> he did not like the last election. he said there were problems. he was vocal about it in 2020. these people are in bed with a lot of the same types. there have been a figure their way out of that same bed. it is very important to be able to stake your ground. you are coming in as a freshman republican. and you don't want to, say for the first time on national television, you don't want to say that if your nominee is a certain way, you are not gonna support them. that is not due to washington. >> joe walsh, he is a former caucus republican. and he ran for the president of the republican party. he is a real conservative. he has not changed his stripes. he just things the the pumpkin party has gone nuts. he is saying that a small majority the house might be better for democratic chances in 2024. it makes whoever the speaker is, whether it is kevin mccarthy or someone else, they have a very hard time with these people. they're gonna be relatively uncompromising. >> yeah. in politics, in sports, there's
6:28 am
always this half full and half empty attitude that people take. look at the grasses harmful when things are going poorly. a quarterback it's injured. at least we get to see the rookie play. it is the same thing here in politics. look, this is the hand we are dealt. we are probably -- none of this has been protected. this is going down into the next congress. that could help. there are certainly ways of looking at it. what you are going to see, we're gonna see divided republican caucus. whether it is kevin mccarthy or someone else. they could be leaving that caucuses the speaker. you will see a lot of infighting, a lot of speaking. the power is going to go to a very slim and vocal minority. this is for the people they bring along a home. it is all gonna look the same to kevin mccarthy. we are going to need some concessions before we even vote for you for speaker. you are gonna see some power from the very much extreme part
6:29 am
of that. that is something that nancy pelosi could keep away from a national conversation buries exceptionally. i don't see the republicans being able to do that is easily. >> thank you for doing that. thank you for getting up early. formulas appreciate your conversations. landmarks smarter about politics than i ever would have been. we spoke and spend time together on the road. that is a seasoned political journalist and old friend. coming up, we are going live to arizona. we can get some big calls. we had some big cold overnight. >> this is the newly winner of the secretary of state race. they're standing by. mark finchem's is the candidate for the republican. it is different than kari lake. you can make the case, in terms of presentation, she's a little bit more refined than mark finchem. look at mark kelly and blake masters. again, they appeal to folks for different reasons and indifferent ways. we could have a long focus group of folks here on why they chose one candidate compared to the other. especially when you look at all four candidates on the republican side. each of those individuals as an election denier. they spent the final three weeks campaigning around the state together as a quartet. look at what took place last night. every night, maricopa county officials are releasing about results. last night was that consequential one. it indicated whether blake masters and mark finchem had any shot at closing their gaps. what you saw was that the folks were brought mail ballots, they hand-delivered them in person on election day. they did not seek u.s. republican as those individuals

have likely picked up on a trend in american politics. the president party does not very well when it comes time to go midway into the turn. this is a pattern that goes way back. in 15 of the last 20 elections, the president party lost ground in the senate. in 19 last 20 election, president party lost ground in the house of representatives. with that in mind, it made sense for democrats to expect some losses. and that is just a normal times. on top of those odds, the democrats also have the disadvantage of a president with an underwhelming approval rating. 44%. that is according to the national nbc news exit polling data. it was looking ole but certainly the democrats were going to lose, maybe even lose very big on tuesday. spoiler alert, this year did not fall in line with tradition. democrats managed to defy historical train. they actually overperformed in this year's midterm. how did they do it? according to the nbc news political unit, the democrats won over the true swing voters. those who, quote, somewhat disapproved of biden. i'm not talking about democrats
6:53 am
who have been on the fence about their party's president. this covers republicans as well. these are folks who somewhat disapprove of biden. they made up 10% of all voters. those somewhat disapprove years broke for democratic candidates over republicans by four points nationally. they split their tickets in several key races. for example, in georgia, swing voters chose a republican governor, brian kemp. they chose him over stacey abrams. but they voted for the democrat on the senate ticket. raphael warnock over the republican, herschel walker. that raises not included. it will now go to a runoff in december. in nevada, swing voters chose republican government candidate, joe lombardo. they also look like they're leaning towards a democratic senate, catherine cortez masto. the republican senator, ron johnson, he is an election denier. a new hampshire, the republican governor, chris sununu, he won. so to the democratic senator, maggie hassan. there is a pattern here.
6:54 am
those somewhat disapprove wears a biden broke decisively away from candidates who were backed by donald trump but supported some candidates to remove themselves from his influence. that shows that the trump endorsement may not have sealed the deal for a successful campaign after all. that is going to lead to a lot of navel gazing for republicans right now. for democrats, that realization jobs might make losses against non trump republican opponents heard a little bit last. i want to bring in the democratic congressman, tom malinowski. he lost his reelection bid on tuesday to the republican, tomas kaine junior. -mile-an-hour ski has been a constant gassed and friend of the show over the years. we are sorry for your loss. tell me what i just said. does it make it any less bad that these losses, many of these losses were not to mega. >> thank you.
6:55 am
thank you. i hate losing, obviously. >> sure. >> it was a good week for america. that obviously does make it a lot better. i have been reassuring folks in my district who are understandably upset, we worked so hard on the race. we feel like we gain ground from park the district that i presented. we lost largely because of redistricting. i had about 30,000 republicans out to my district. overall, the measures the country set was more moderation, last maga. more problem solving, last performance artists in washington. i think that is incredibly good for the country. i feel like the thing that we are fighting for over the last few years took a major step forward. >> it is there a lesson? i think they're gonna be a whole lot of lessons for republicans out of what happened on tuesday.
6:56 am
is there a lesson for democrats? about what the next race should look like. about what democrats should be doing. do you think there were any lesson to take away? it was just a repudiation of trumpism and election denialism? >> it is always more complicated than that. one of the things that i was saying to anybody who would listen in the rejoining of the election is that we should not treat americans like they are single issue voters. most of my constituents really did care about gas prices anglesey prices. but they also did not want to be covered in washington by a bunch of election deniers who would violently stormed the capitol. they also don't wanna national abortion ban. all of these things mattered simultaneously to a lot of voters. as much as inflation did matter, the mega wing of the republican party did not exactly offer and answer. we have to continue to speak to all of these different concerns. we have to be a party with an economic message. we should not shy away from arguing for the rule of law.
6:57 am
arguing for these foundational american principles. i think that the second thing is that before some alliances in this election. alliances between democrats and moderate republicans. they don't agree with us on every issue. but they do reject the violence and extremism that trump bought to their party. look, ten years from now, i expect that i will probably be arguing with liz cheney about a few things. >> as we should be doing. we should all be debating real issues all the time. that has been absent from the political discourse for a while. >> exactly. i don't want to completely give up these really interesting in positive alliances that we have forged. first of all, we are none of the woods. there are a lot more crazy trumpers in the house of representatives next year than there were last year. >> let me ask you about this. >> we still need to hold on to the coalition. >> one of the reasons that you and i have talked so much because of your expertise and
