katie. >> our thanks to priscilla thompson for getting us up to speed about what is happening in the state of georgia. now, we're gonna turn to washington, d.c., where the implications of democrats maintain control of the site is coming into focus. if senator warnock holds the georgia senate seat, democrats even have the chance of expanding their majority in the upper chamber. should that happen, it would be the first time since 2002 in the presidents party has gained senate seats in the midterm election, and for more with all this means for president biden 's agenda, we turn to nbc news correspondent allie raffa. who is live for us on capitol hill. good morning, ali. >> good morning, katie. we know overnight president biden called senator cortez masto as well as senate majority leader chuck schumer on this major victory that is really allowing democrats to finally take this sigh of relief even before the georgia senate runoffs slated for

december 5th. with the senate seat in nevada, combined with vice president kamala harris, tie breaking vote, of course, they have reached a majority in the senate. this is massive implications for president biden and his legislative agenda. not just for the next two years, but really far beyond that. because democrats now have the majority to be able to push legislation forward. more easily. they also have the power to appoint liberal judges. and liberal justices to the supreme court. should a cease open up in the next two years, without republican obstruction. if senator raphael warnock is able to keep his seat in georgia, and the democrats get 51 seats then that will also put them in position to have a better committee assignments. all of this is coming really as much of a shock to democrats as it dates to republicans because we know that historically the party in power tends to lose congressional seats during the midterms. right now, there are nearly two dozen house seats still up for

grabs. republicans are much closer to returning that 218 seats needed to maintain control. democrats are saying not to count the most just yet. meanwhile you have republicans try not to point the finger of blame anyone. you senate republicans using these midterm losses as ammunition against mitch mcconnell. on the house side, you have house republicans instilling doubts as to whether the house is top republican kevin mccarthy showed and could be speaker for publicans gain the majority there. all of this teeing up what is likely to be some very interesting closed-door leadership elections. >> our thanks to all are raw for live on capitol hill. we are gonna turn overseas to cambodia, where president biden is continuing his tour across southeast asia. today he met with the japanese prime minister and a south

welcome. pack the democrats have secured control of the senate. and they are still very much in the running for control of the house. even if republicans do when house control, they will likely have a much smaller majority than anyone thought. as democrats celebrate their, victories they are also drawing a big and bold line between their garden in the party that platforms donald trump.

republican in the former chair of the new hampshire republican party. and -- is an msnbc political analyst and former senior adviser to the biden campaign. good morning to both of you jennifer. i'm gonna start with you this morning. as a former republican, in your opinion what do you think the democrats a day's rights? in those key races that led to victory? >> well, first good morning and thanks for having me, katie. i think the democrats did right was essentially keeping their eye on the. ballet did not let themselves be pulled out and drawn it into some of these tangential into her party -- extra party conflicts just do not have anything to do with what voters care about. when the rubric surprises during this election was the turnout. and particularly looking at the turn out from gen z voters. i started calling them the no fuss no muss election generation. voting generation.

because they cannot be bothered with polls. they do not particularly kayla care if you know what their thoughts are pant plans are for voting. but they show up. they show up and they voted on the issues that were important to them. and they were done. and i think that's looking ahead to democrats and republicans alike are going to have to take these younger voters much more seriously, and recognize that we live in kind of a different world. a digital world. and they aren't as married to the old we are doing things where comes to voting. >> crist of all, it is not just those house races and even senate races, frankly. democrats even had to flip multiple state legislation chambers. what republicans were not able to flip a single state level chamber. so what specific messages and priorities do you think ultimately resonated with so many diverse voters across somewhat of the country? >> good morning, katie.

it was a huge night for democrats. not just in the senate, but if you point out legislatures across the country. the hasse increasingly tight. -- on the races still need to be decided. about 21. steve kornacki still needs to call. in terms of the messaging here, i went to bed last night and stop watching these videos from -- in. ukraine liberators coming into the city. -- pollster nissan starts crying. because you grandsons coming into liberated the city. your mackerel publicans you bet they immediately sided with russia. turn back from ukraine. and democracy was lost here as well. messages that resonate here were number one standing up for democracy. standing up for the constitutional rights. i have two daughters. it is outrageous that they were going through the world with fewer rights than their mom. those are some of the messages that voters were able to see across the board.

in nevada, yesterday, people thought they were going towards republicans. by a more two than one margin, they likely catherine cortez masto. the same thing with these gen z weathers we just heard about. across the country in georgia. really all over the place. record numbers. i guess the last thing i will say here is that trump was a huge reason that happens. and washington state, see that jumps to democrats. and that is because he was -- in that. race and voters are tired of the crazy. tired of the lies. tired of insurrectionists. >> jennifer, i'm glad the cristobal brings up what we are going to call the trump factor. in an op-ed in washington, the chief correspondent dan ball says, quote, the big story of this election is the damage trump has done. and the price republicans have paid for not standing up to him sooner. so what are the chances that

republicans actually did to the donald this time around? >> i am glad you asked me that question. because i know a lot of people are talking about how the gop is finally turning on donald trump. i think it is a little too early to give them that kind of credits. what we just heard about democracy and what kind of world do we want our children to raise their children in? i think there's a big interest in voters on this particular election. what we see some of the more public voices and candace owens of the world out there reprimanding trump for the damage that is done, the gop is still going to be afraid of their primary voter. the gop is still going to depend on donald trump for fundraising and for energizing their base voters when they need to piece. they're afraid of trump himself when he has these outrages explosions of narcissism.

on the public stage. i think that while there may be some who are starting to think that the party needs to move away from public associations with trump, and there is no sign that the republicans are going to move away from trumpism. and the anti-democracy movement within the wave of that party. >> cristobal, i have less than a minute before we have to go to break. you as a panel are going to stay after the break. i wanted to ask you are jennifer's point. trump said that primary candidates lost. but then ultimately lost. i guess the question is, do you think the trump factor still lives after the success of the democrats in this particular midterm election? >> yes. it absolutely still lives. he will still be a major factor. don't expect him to announce his run for presidents. soon people will tear apart the republican party to the benefit of democrats. and also i think it's probably gonna take one more strong defeat. to finally be done with them.

and that means the presidents joe biden would not have to worry so much about this man. west virginia senator joe manchin. here's a quick reminder of manchin's role in the back biden presidency so far. in january, an op-ed in the hill called mentioned a big thorn in biden's side, from blocking the -- back better plan. maybe you think it is an isolated incident? no. just a few days ago, manchin said that recent comments with the coal industry were outrageous and divorced from reality. just days after, that manchin came out against biden's nominee for energy conditions. if democrats win in georgia will that effectively neutered joe manchin's power as a democratic spoiler? keep in mind that manchin is also up for reelection in 2024. along with fellow, i'm putting this in, quote moderate democrats. kirsten sinema and jon tester. let's bring back my power political perilous sunday. morning jennifer horn in cristobal alice.

cristobal, for this round i want to start with you first. do you think it is a guarantee that warnock's 51st seat would eliminates the ability of moderates, quote, like joe manchin and kyrsten sinema, to hold up the nomination for judicial seats, and its agenda? i would note there are currently 85 federal -- openings that potus will not be able to fill. >> there is a complicated relationship between this white house and joe manchin. i remember when i was looking at the white house there were a lot of negotiations going back and forth. with some of this major legislation. i was walking to the white house one night, and it comes a pick up truck speeding through. and i stop for minutes, and joe manchin has his pick up truck to the white house. -- we will have the kind of power. jordan here stated the white house and got -- directly with the leadership including the president. with that said, he is comparing a very big way for milestone legislation and you have to

give him credit. i was -- yesterday. he doesn't look a democratic state with a lot of democrats. he is who he is. but the fact that now democrats have control and can expand the majority, makes a big deal for the nomination. is not just judicial nominations, a lot of critical in federal appointees. we are still held up. an important agency positions around the country. if the republicans do in fact take the house the game becomes one executive action which powers through the agency. those will be absolutely critical. last thing we say here is we are less worried about joe manchin. but if i'm kristen sinema i'm getting a little bit worried. if you asked an average voter what kirsten sinema stands for, i would say they are to mainstream that question. which opens up the door to somebody very strong to possibly primary. her so she is the one that has to be a little more careful. the red state is fairly popular. they're >> with friends like

that who needs enemies? jennifer i mentioned that scotus a vacancy which doesn't exist right now. but maybe. we'll roe v. wade is clearly on the minds of voters. when they went to the ballot boxes last week, jennifer, with the secure senate majority for the democrats, can we see a run again? it's codifying roe into federal law? >> i think you should probably expect that, katie. i would also say my friend mike -- who knows these midterm numbers better than almost anybody else i know was talking on social media last night about the idea that eight to 10% of gop voters in many states actually crossed lines and voted democrat in this race. and you really have to question whether or not roe v. wade was a part of that. i'm looking forward to finding out how many of those folks are women. i think there is an assumption that was there that every republican is always going to vote against the idea of

qualifying roe v. wade. and i think for a lot of women as, there including the republican party that issue is not just about pro-life or not being pro-life but about privacy, your individual right to control and make decisions about your body. i would be surprised if we did not see a run at it. i think folks like -- just real quickly we're talking with joe manchin a second ago. joe manchin and kyrsten sinema, those folks had big democratic majority and of course each individual person will have less influence. but at the same time that means the party and the president are not going to be able to use some of these more moderate democrats as excuses for why they cannot advance their agenda. whether it is codify roe v. wade or number of other. if you will answer that question in 2024 as well. >> i am glad you brought up 2024, jennifer. because, cristobal i publish my fellow msnbc host --

talking to the warnock victory in georgia will be a down payment on a difficult senate map for democrats. what is going to be coming, up frankly, in 2024. what should democrats be prioritizing in the next congress? to make sure that they are in the best possible position when they roll into the year in 2024? >> i think what we did and what we saw this last summer's what democrats will do in 2024. it worked tirelessly on behalf of the american people. with -- the touches all of us. the gun safety legislation was crucial and make sure that we count down covid in school safely reopens. it will bring down inflationary pressures. the economy needs to continue on the path of it is right now which is almost at full employment. and also keep your promises around abortion rights. and constitutional rights. and of course protect our

forced to consider yet another trump presidential campaign. he's expected to make an announcement from his estate in florida on tuesday. fresh off some undeniably weak results for the gop. democrats defying historical trends to maintain control of the united states senate. they requested this by defeating several of trump's maga favorites including dr. mehmet oz in pennsylvania. dawn -- in new hampshire. blake masters in arizona. and adam laxalt in nevada. they all lost. as voters say no to trump, in many of his maga darlings, so to our conservative media outlets. the wall street journal editorial page, and your post in the national review, now all saying the republican party should put trump out to pasture. as the national review wrote, the pattern of republican wins and losses on tuesday were not random. its message was not hard to learn. it plunges off is a blinking

conway. george, my, friend first. i've got to get your reaction to the snl skit. do you think immediate like frost news can quitting ties with trump is the bellwether that conservative america is finally ditching with donald? >> i am afraid not. i think that they can ditch the donald. i think that everybody who knows -- about politics and really focuses on it we want him to go away if they were republican or conservative. but the fact of the matter is he still has a strong following. it does not have to be 50 or 60% for winning the nomination. and he knows that he is going to run. he is like a quarter -- out. he has to run because that is, he thinks, the only real difference he has against the indictments. and he is on track to be indicted. probably two times over the next six months. >> i mean the commentary on widely being blamed trump george for republican losses in

the midterm elections. do you think republican voters, you said he still has a following. do you think republican voters are going to point a finger and blame trump for his weak results, nonexistent results for the gdp? >> some. well they smarter ones will. but a lot of them won't. a lot of them actually may just retreat to election denialism or blame or rhinos, or blame democrats or blame the media. we don't blame trump. and that is what trump will do. trump is the ultimate narcissist, nothing is ever his fault. and the people who follow him on our entranced by that narcissism. nothing is his fault and they are going to stick by that story. because if they do not stick by it they're gonna be admitting that they were wrong about trump for all this time. and they don't want to do that. >> last we, for the governor ron desantis cruised to

reelection victory. clearly gaining the ire of trump at the same time. on the social media platform, calling -- an average republican governor with great public relations. various close to what -- i have said about rhonda scientists. what is your assessment for a trump desantis about what is now brewing? i am envisioning hunger games style gop primaries for the 2024 presidential run. >> i actually don't very wrong desantis is going to run. i was more certain of that a week ago than i am today. because trump was obviously weaker today than he was several days ago. but any bottle with trump is going to be exactly what you say. it's going to be brutal. the way you took on trump's to go after anne-marie. tom he's gonna go like that. be the --

two handle much fasts. for desantis, i don't see what the upside is for him to do that. if he might lose because of the fact of the matter is that the rules are going to favor donald trump. because after a few weeks, winner take all, it's gonna be winner take all even if it is 30%. and even if desantis does succeed in knocking off, trump he will end up with some significant percentage of the republican base angriest him. he's 44 years old. his best play, is most rational, play and he's rational, unlike trump, would be to basically continue raising money by leaving open the possibility of running. keep building that massive war chest that they have. and say the people of florida need me so they can fill my commitment to them. stay governor until 2026 when
