tv   Alex Witt Reports  MSNBC  November 19, 2022 10:00am-11:00am PST

10:00 am
a very good day to all of you
10:01 am
from msnbc world headquarters here in new york. welcome every day to alex what reports. we were begin with breaking news, new details in the chilling story from idaho where for college students were murdered under mysterious circumstances, now almost a week ago. authorities there are still looking for that killer and a possible motive behind the killings. joining me now embassy scottie short from idaho. gaudy this is a story we had to have to go over again and again but there are reasons to do so. what is the latest? >> well alex, the fear is building and this community. every day with this killer still on the loose, is that college town and so many students have opted to leave early because they just don't feel safe. meanwhile, authorities say reinforcements have arrived. there are over 100 local state and federal officers that have now been assigned to this case.
10:02 am
>> it's been nearly a week since police and moscow, idaho sealed off the scene of a gruesome murder. investigators are still collecting evidence. at one point friday, digging something out of the leaves in the backyard. the families of the victims, in disbelief that the killer for people is still on the loose. >> my husband is in contact with them every day, the fbi, moscow, idaho state police and every day, he just says nothing. >> now police confirming that the victims were attacked with a large knife, some had defensive wounds, some may have been killed in their sleep. and there was no sign of sexual assault. meanwhile, police remain tightlipped over why they can't share who called 9-1-1 around eight hours after the murders. telling us they have ruled out the scene near two of the victims in this video as a suspect, as well as to other females who are inside of the home but on hurt when the attacks happened. >> now that to remains have been ruled out conclusively, can you tell us if they were
10:03 am
the ones to call 9-1-1? >> so still, we will not release that information yet. that particular piece of information seems to be fueling a lot of conspiracies and making your jobs harder. >> that is correct, there are a lot of conspiracies out there, a lot of conjecture. however you know, we have to work on the facts. >> the most pressing facts are still in mystery. no matter weapon, no motive, not even a suspect description. devastating for the families of xander colonel, ethan, manny and katie gonzalez. praying for a and their grief. >> turn yourself in, you owe it to these mothers of these children, these fathers, these families. you are wrong. turn yourself in. >> and alex, we understand about 500 tips have come into police, police are asking for even more tips from the public. specifically about where those victims were. they are building a very specific timeline of evidence leading to their deaths.
10:04 am
we also understand that the school, does have class for the rest of the week and up until thanksgiving break, but again so many students have been leaving town early because they just do not feel safe. alex back to you. >> so gadi as i am listening to the story, listening to your reporting throughout the week on this, you have to wonder why is this so confounding? it is almost a week since these killings. why is this taking so long? they are getting tips but there seems to be nothing much new at all. >> that is absolutely right. not only that, there is been a lot of confusion. you might remember this whole thing started off and then you heard from the mayor say something about, a possible crime of passion. and then all of a sudden, those statements were walked back and when you talk to the families, they get very angry when they hear the idea of a crime of passion put out there. it is almost like there is a piece of information that comes out and then there is information that comes out a
10:05 am
little bit later that either backtrack that information or seems to take the investigation in a different direction. and unfortunately, a lot of this investigation is back where it started, five, to six days ago now. tonight will be a week since this happened. and that is no suspect, no murder weapon and no motive, alex? >> so again it will peppy for questions, i know you are not involved in that case but are there no security cameras anywhere that offer video of that particular house? i mean most houses especially in a school community, university community like that might have. that and also, how many departments are involved in this investigation? is it just a local police or have more been able to join this investigation? >> alex, question one and we have done the walk. this is a neighborhood where it is a lot of student housing. in fact, there is a couple of fraternities that i can see them from here. for the most part, it is student housing and it is not like your typical neighborhood
10:06 am
where everybody seems to have a ring camera. this is a lot of students here, so when you walk around you don't see those ring cameras or security cameras or a cameras on the front of houses. we do understand that there is at least one or two pieces of video that place and uber or a rideshare leaving some of these victims here before the murders took place. we just have not seen that video released. we did see the video from the food truck released but again, investigators are now saying that the person that was seen in that video close to the suspect has been ruled out as a suspect. >> okay last question, is that university property or is this all off campus housing that the university does not own? >> this is all off campus property and then campuses right there. i can see the hill of campus, probably 500 yards away. so it happen extremely close to the university here and again,
10:07 am
you know a lot of the students here have just opted to leave town since last week. because the killer is still on the loose, they don't feel safe. >> yes i'm sure their parents want them home. okay gaudy shorts thank you so much for taking the questions as well. let's go to politics now, and your reaction as a special counsel is appointed by attorney general merrick garland handled two major federal investigations, and to former president donald trump. special counsel jack smith went out overseeing that probes into trump's role in the january 6th attack. and a declassified documents that he kept at mar-a-lago. trump's former attorney general, bill barr giving his thoughts on what this could mean for his former boss. >> these are serious -- not a serious. i have said that, i personally think that they probably have the basis for legitimately indicting the president. >> the appointing of a special counsel comes days after trump denounced his third white house bid which has been drawn criticisms and being low energy, and quoting from conservatives. last hour, former senior white house official amorous and
10:08 am
mount neumann gave me her thoughts on the presidential announcement. >> it was so bad for anyone who is sitting there thinking okay donald trump is going to make a major comeback. this was a total let down, you can see that donald trump is not only vulnerable but i don't really think he is into. it hasn't the only reason that he announced is to give themselves some protection against the slew of investigations that he is facing right now. >> meanwhile, new reaction today as house speaker nancy pelosi prepares to step down as democratic leader and usher in a new generation to take the reins. as a new trio of democrats launched their bids for leadership positions, last hour democratic congressman seth moulton told me why he is endorsing hakeem jeffries to become the house democrats new leader. >> it is time for younger people that have a voice and a caucus and in the party, he's a great communicator. he is brilliant, he is smart. those are the things that i think we'll show through to the american people over time and i
10:09 am
think you will be a great leader for the caucus and party. >> a new legal victory for democrats ahead of next month's georgia senate runoff. a georgia judge has ruled to allow early voting next saturday for the race between democratic senator raphael warnock and republican herschel walker. warnock's campaign had spearheaded the lawsuit, which challenge state guidance that had initially prohibited voting on that day. for more, now on the special counsel appointment, nbc monica alba is at the white house for us. monika, another welcome to you. how much power will it have when it comes to determining whether donald trump should be charged? what is the read on that? d beso the special counsel jack smith, will have the ability to take all of the information and then come to a recommendation type of conclusion of what he thinks if he does believe that charges should be filed is a plausible here. but it will be up to attorney general merrick garland to ultimately signed off on that and move forward. there is still little ways to go here of course in these both
10:10 am
sprawling investigations when it comes to the timeline. but when we pull back the curtain a bit here on the selection of jack smith, this as somebody who goes all the way back to the eastern district of new york, working there. he also had it up the public integrity division for the department of justice in 2010. but most recently, he has been focusing on war crimes at the hague. this will be a new appointment for him of course, but he does bring this years of experience to the job and the reason the attorney general said that this was a critical moment to do this now it is really an attempt to insulate the department of justice from these attacks and calls of it being politically motivated which we are already hearing from people like the former president. the attorney general specifically and this press conference yesterday said that it was the 2024 factor that played a major role here. here is how he also explained how he views the special counsel's work in the weeks and months ahead. >> today, i signed an order
10:11 am
appointing jack smith to serve as special counsel. the order authorizes him to continue the ongoing investigation into both of the manners that i just described and to prosecute any federal crimes that may arise from those investigations. >> so that two investigations of course, the mar-a-lago documents case and the january six investigation. the fact that he is overseeing both, two very different kinds of investigations and january 61 for instance, a lot of that has already played out in public in terms of some of the people who have been held accountable for that as that continues and it involves so many key players. where is the mar-a-lago documents case has really been tied up in the courts. that is where you see the battle back and forth between the u.s. government and the former president. for his part mr. trump unsurprisingly reacted to all of this, calling it what he has done in terms of any criminal probe in the last couple of years saying ultimately it was a sort of which hunt and a hoax that he says is political motivated. take a listen to how we did react last night.
10:12 am
>> this horrendous abuse of power is the latest of a long series of witch hunts. they want to do bad things to the greatest movement in the history of our country. and particular, bad things to me but i have got used to it. this is a deal just as a 2020 election was rigged and we can't let them get away with it. >> the president there, former president repeating of course those falsehoods that he has continued to campaign on but again, the 2024 issue here that played a large role according to the attorney general. it is not just mr. trump, we are talking about here given the fact that the current president has indicated he may seek reelection as well. you will discuss it with his family over the holidays before making that final decision alex. >> i can't let you go that asking about the happy event underway as the president celebrating the wedding with his granddaughter at the white house. what can you tell us about that? do you know who is in attendance, name somebody we might recognize? >> absolutely alex, naomi biden
10:13 am
married peter neil on the south lawn in an 11 am ceremony this morning. we started to see our first photos just a little bit ago was really a giant white aisle that you can see coming from the south portico doors all the way to about halfway down on the south lawn. this was an outdoor event with about 150 people, and then after the outdoor portion, i am told a select group of the family and friends moved inside for a luncheon and then later this evening, there will be a reception and some deserts and some dancing and more black tie affair and what you would expect from a wedding. i have to tell you, the couple has chosen to make this a very private event. they are not sharing a ton of different details so we don't know fully who is on the guest list beyond of course the president, first lady, they are very close friends and family. how you can expect and i'm also told that they are all gathering here and together and not just celebrating these nuptials today but there will also be a form of celebration for the president who tomorrow
10:14 am
turns 80 years old. >> definitely a big week, let me just say this, i can understand wanting privacy for the wedding but i say people like you are thinking yes but that is america's house behind you. and it's not just her own house for things and people are wishing that they would've given a little more access for the media because who does not like to celebrate a wedding? that is awesome anyways, thank you monica for that report and appreciate that. let's go now back to the special counsel story. my next guest has been all over that story is a senior legal affairs reporting with political. josh christine is joining me right now. josh, first up what is the latest in this? what are you hearing from your sources today? >> well you know definitely a new chapter in the investigations alex. the investigations have been moving forward, both the one at mar-a-lago and the issue of january six and the presidents efforts to over to the former presidents efforts i should say, to overturn the 2020 election results. there has been a lot of activity and both of those
10:15 am
investigations over the last couple of months in terms of grand juries, subpoenas, people being questioned. privilege, executive, privileged fights going on. and so we are waiting for mr. smith to come to washington, if i can use that phrase. back from the hague, add a bit of a bike accident in the last few days. so that delayed his return and made him unable to appear with garland. but we think you will sort of slip right in over the existing apparatus alex. that is somewhat different than other special counsel investigations in the past. >> i have not heard about the bike accident, is he doing okay? >> i think he broke his knee or did something quite bad to his knee and had to have surgery but we are told that he should be able to come back to washington within a few days. >> yikes, i hope he is better seen cars that hurts. what does it mean overall josh to have a special counsel assigned to these cases? and i guess the question is this. as the investigation any different from the day before he came on board?
10:16 am
>> i think that merrick garland is hoping that whatever final decision the justice department reaches which is ultimately his decision, you know we'll have a degree is monaco's saying earlier, a degree of additional credibility and insulation for having and vogt this procedure. i think that is what's held. i don't think the investigation is changed very much, as i was alluding to earlier and other investigations like the mueller investigation for example. we really saw almost a wholesale overhaul of the people that have been handling these investigations. when the special counsel came in, he hired a team of about a dozen to 15 lawyers, they got a new crop of fbi agents beyond the ones who have been working on the case for months already at that point. the signals we are getting from the justice department is that that is not how this will work. with special counsel smith, that he will simply come in as a new supervisor, for the existing team. you can kind of see that or hear that in what attorney general garland said yesterday,
10:17 am
where he talked about he did not think there was any impropriety with the people who are currently working on the cases that they have done strong word any sort of expected them to continue to work on these. >> josh, article says that garland did not say was specificity why he appointed as special counsel. was he intentionally being vague? do you, did you get a clear sense of what direction the investigations will go and next? >> well i think he was being intentionally vague a little bit, it's a vague standard to be fair about the credibility of that department essentially. and what would appear to be a conflict of interest. i think he may not want it to who have gave a lot of detail reason why because of concerns that in other sensitive cases, the department might be handling. somebody say what you did it here but you did not do it here and this is the exact reason. he sort of made general comments about integrity and appearances and he did as we were just discussing talk about former president trump's
10:18 am
decision to announce for president. it's quite interesting, so many pundits have said that would have no effect whatsoever on garland's decision. and he cited it pretty prominently yesterday as one of the reasons that spurred him to make this announcement. >> yes okay, political structure good to see you josh. thank you so much and coming up in just a few minutes, we will have the atlantic's mark leibovitz -- and they will discuss the consequences of naming a special counsel on donald trump 's presidential run and honest potential republican rivals. let's go now to the breaking news the massive snowstorm burying western new york today. look at that, buffalo area residents are certainly digging out from a record dump of about six feet of snow, which is triggered some major road closures and flight cancellations of course just days before thanksgiving holiday. and you see marissa power is joining us now from orchard park, of course where the buffalo bills play. though not today, not this weekend. >> no, indeed. weekend.and back before we saw e
10:19 am
first snowflakes fall, they move that came to detroit. so they were thinking smart because as you can see, there is a lot of cleanup being done. i will step out of the way so that you can see for yourself. that snow that they are dumping over there is probably a mixture of snow on the roads around here. as well as probably some snow from the stadium. and if you have been watching the buffalo bills twitter account, you will get a kick out of some of the videos from inside of the stadium. they made the right moves to clear numbers obviously underway here and in terms of what things look like when everybody woke up, we all got a fresh coat of snow overnight. but right now the bands are really bad in the north. now the big concern of course is getting those roads clear, still asking people to travel bans, travel advisories all throughout erie county. kind of depends on where specifically because these guys need to do their job. last, night we acted a chance to speak to somebody and one of the neighborhoods i mean it was miles long of cars that were either stranded or stuck. the neighbor we spoke to was not too happy. >> it irritates me because the
10:20 am
plows can get through, the roads are not being plowed. because of the traffic. >> that impacts you. >> oh yes, and that's everybody. impacts everybody, especially emergency vehicles. as on ambulance calls to hear about an hour ago and he was sliding all over the road and he almost got stuck in the riots. that is terrible. what if it's a life you know situation. >> i will leave you with one piece of good news, the orchard park police chief is telling our affiliate that officers are going around to the homes of players with the buffalo bills to get them out of their homes which got almost seven feet of snow by the way, and got to the airport so they can make it to tomorrow's game in detroit. back to you. >> those flights are camera sapporo thank you so much. and coming up for all of you, here is the question, if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear, it doesn't make a sound? and if so, someone decides to run for president and fewer people want him to, does he have any real impact.

of the investigation and ultimately a decision on whether or not donald trump should face criminal charges. related to ongoing department of justice investigations, related to classified and other government documents found at mar-a-lago or related to efforts to interfere with the lawful transfer of power following the 2020 election and on january six. and trump is not happy about it. >> they corrupt and highly political justice department -- , a super radical left special counsel that are referred to as a special prosecutor to start the process all over again. with thought it was just about this. as you know, just about the top person and one of the top people in the justice department, lisa monaco a major trump hater. major i mean beyond belief.

is in charge of the case. >> well joining me now alexia mcallen, axles political reported emerson political contributor and marc lipa vote, staff writer at the atlantic msnbc political contributor and author of thank you for your service to donald trump's washington, and the price a submission. which is just a great book. all right so alexei, what is the latest today? do we know when the work first of all begins for the special counsel and how quickly jack smith intends to get on the job? though josh christine just told me that he had some sort of a bike accident, broke his knee maybe? so that might delay things a bit. >> right, i was listening to that bit with josh that you just have and that was news to me. josh said he would be able to make it back to washington as special counsel within a few days. like merrick garland has said previously that appointing this special counsel would not slow down the investigation and any sense. it would not change the timeline, there is still tracking to move at the same pace as before and i know i think the appointment of the
10:26 am
special counsel is especially interesting when you consider that garland himself is a judge who is nonpartisan. he is really going out of his way to make sure that this situation is as transparent and impartial as possible. and so when this is all done, hopefully that is the view of how this has been carried out. but you've seen how this is already been politicized by the former president and some of his allies here in washington. >> i am curious mark what kind of outcome are you hoping or expecting to see from the special counsel? >> well i mean i think this will take a while, i don't know if this would delay any longer than it would have if it stayed in the justice department indications, and concerns are that it wouldn't indications and i might not an obviously the justice department is done a lot of these legwork second pretty seamlessly and go over to the special counsel's office. know this gives the administration, this gives the justice department one step of removed from charges of political light station. obviously, you can't eliminate
10:27 am
those and this is their first move. you saw what trump said last night but like this is dicey and special councils are extremely you know and power they have all kinds of freedom, all kinds of budget usually and donald trump, obviously has firsthand experience with this and is not happy about it. so i think everything i know about jack smith that i've learned basically in the last 24 hours is that he is really by the book, he is pretty darn good and probably more relentless than robert mueller at this point. there are people leave privately on both sides this is a good choice. this will take for a long time and probably go into the 2024 cycle and a lot more than it already is and this will just add another reboot to this whole thing. >> a couple of things, to use the word dicey and icy for? who is a dicey for merrick garland and secondly, harry lippman told me in the last hour and he is pretty shrewd legal mind. he said i think it'll only take
10:28 am
a couple or three months. do you think that is not possible? >> based on what the doj is already done and you add in the 16 committee information, all the research that they haven't all the things they have proven and he thinks that they could make it wrapped up quickly? >> it is conceivable but these transitions don't happened seamlessly. it takes a while to staff approximately smith will do a lot of his own interviewing and want to do is own investigating. that 16 committee is still active so he has a big portfolio. between 16 and the documents, that is a very, very big you know couple of chunks to bite off. so you know the bike accident aside, i assume that it will take longer than that but harry lippman is smarter than i am. >> really quick, dicey for merrick garland at all? >> trump, trump. that is the situation for garland no matter what but i would say trump. >> okay i want to talk about speaking of trump, tony toward for announcement with you alexei.
10:29 am
the widespread character a station that was low energy. what is this whole no frills thing? was that the strategy decision, stick to the script? keep it safe because that is definitely not trump style. i mean is that why his performance was lackluster? we are not used to seeing that from that particular man? >> i mean i don't know if you sat there and watched it like i did but i sat and watched it and it was low energy in the sense that he wasn't doing when he normally does. he was not attacking people are calling people names. he wasn't railing against people or institutions the entire time. he did a couple of times but he largely focused on policy. he focused on trying to create a contrast between his vision on things like immigration and border security and the economy with what he's seen from president biden. i won when he said that democrats want to focus on the threat of climate change and not focus enough on the threat of nuclear weapons. so he really was low energy
10:30 am
because he was taken to the teleprompter, sticking to a script and you see at the same time what he is posting on truth social, which is how we actually feels in the way that he actually wants to talk. and so i think the more that he gets out, there are the more interviews that he does in the more rallies that we will see that trump that we are used to especially for republicans jump in the primary field and start to present some sort of threat to his candidacy. >> there is a less out their market as from the washington post. republicans have publicly said they will not support his 2024 bid, congressman mo brooks governor kristi noem, mike pompeo, nick mulvaney. when you talk to republicans for your book, first of most of them slam trump privately right but they would not go public? and when you asked what is the plan for 2024, you've got some really interesting responses. tell us about it. >> oh yes i mean they don't have any response. if they were serious about, this more than would put their name on some of the private concerns that we have been hearing about in the last two weeks. right it is just, yes we have a
10:31 am
list up there but this anybody actually asked mike pence would you vote for donald trump or joe biden or bill barr was asked the same question yesterday. he actually would not rule out voted for donald trump which is right after he said that he thought the justice department had enough stuff to indict him on. so take that with a grain of salt, and look these are cowards. this is what i wrote the book about. and i don't want to plug the buck, i do want to plug the book. i will plug the book. these are cowards but it plays out in silence and some ways. plays out in a vacuum where everybody says donald trump has lost his lost and he is not new and exciting anymore. people don't fear him as much and if they don't fear him you know why isn't congressman x or senator y who privately say they have no use for him anymore, why aren't they saying it publicly? i won't think that this time isn't a different and that this fever has broken anymore than it has before until people start you know sort of stepping up and publicly and more
10:32 am
frontal talking about how they are concerned about him being at the top of the ticket for a third election in a row. >> really quick, at least four major gop donor saying we will not support him anymore. it does not mean he will not continue breaking in the cash? or do you think he will? >> well it doesn't help, it is not like he, there was no one better for free media than donald trump. he did not spend that much money in 2016, managed to get more coverage than he and he got so much coverage, it was not a problem. so look it is a bad pr hit, it is a bad look but i don't think it ultimately bothers him or affects his ability -- >> let me ask oleksiy before we wrap this thing up. trump and from that last night, carry like was visiting mar-a-lago. not ex her lost to katie hobbs and the governor toil race. but as donald trump looking to her as a potential running mate? are you hearing any whispers at all of that? if not over to comments? >> yes, even weeks and months
10:33 am
before the general election, republicans and democrats alike that i spoke to were floating her name for a potential vice presidential candidate, recognizing sort of the political talent that she has to offer what some say is a more palatable version of trump's maga politics. and so i think are going down to mar-a-lago to see trump, refusing to concede our own election, that really fits into that brand that they want to continue into 2024. which is casting doubt on the administration process, our outcomes and keeping arizona and particular sort of ground zero for election deniers. >> interesting, alexei mark, good to see you both thank you guys so much. so who walks in when she walks out? which way the wind is blowing and the cannon house office building. we will show you. ill show you the first-ever all-electric chevy silverado rst. with a multi-flex midgate for extra storage. and an available 400 miles of range on a full charge. evs for everyone, everywhere.
