good morning. 11:00 a.m. eastern, 8:00 a.m. pacific. i'm jose diaz-balart. now that thanksgiving has come to a close, millions of americans are getting a head start on their holiday shopping lists. going to break down what to expect this black friday. we'll bring you an update into the investigation into the devastating mass shooting in walmart. as the fate of daca still hangs in the balance, we'll take a closer look at the effort to protect thousands of people whose only home is the united states. later this hour, we will go to qatar for the world cup where iranian fans joined in protest against the death of masha
8:02 am
amini. we'll bring you the latest on that and a whole lot more. this morning americans are kicking off the holiday season with the busiest shopping day of the year. right now families are headed to the mall as black friday in search of discounts and deals as inflation continues to put a strain on everyone's budgets. but the pressure is on for retailers as well. many businesses are hoping to come out of a fall slump in sales. joining us now is emilie ikeda. good morning. what are you seeing today? >> reporter: good morning to you. this place is absolutely buzzing with excitement. you see this behind me. this is a line on black friday. something we haven't seen a lot of in the past few years during the pandemic. but folks are starting to return to their prepandemic shopping habits. and one of the things that i absolutely love here jose, they've got people -- people have their luggage, they have
8:03 am
shopping carts to fill up as much as possible. people are taking their deals seriously. they're in search of the best bargains as inflation shortens their holiday gift lists. >> reporter: the biggest shopping event of the year is finally here and families are anticipated to take advantage of the deep discounts in record fashion. a whopping 166 million shoppers to fill their baskets this weekend. >> looks like there's going to be some good sales. >> but there could be hiccups for one of the biggest black friday players. some amazon workers are expected to go on strike today around the world, including in the u.s. calling for better wages and working conditions. nbc news reached out to amazon overnight but has not heard back. as many consumers gear up to dive into deals in store and online. this mom will take part in black friday for the first time. >> we're not able to spend as much as we have in the past.
8:04 am
retail sales are expected to grow at a slower pace than last year's historic demand weighed down by sky-high inflation. major players like target, kohl's and macy's have seen a pullback in demand. now they along with nordstrom are pulling out all the stops for customers this black friday. >> we're ready to go with the best products at the best prices. >> reporter: steep sales have been under way at many retailers for weeks. even deeper discounts are dropping in today's countdown to christmas. fine jewelry at macy's for 70% off. save $230 on this smart tv, and second generation air pod pros for their lowest price ever. do you think there's more excitement about buying things in person? >> online shopping is amazing and such a channel for so many retailers. >> reporter: should shoppers expect lines today?
8:05 am
>> absolutely. as shoppers celebrate the season of savings. to avoid those lines, consider using curbside check out or look to see if a retailer allows you to check out an item using its app while in store. that could save you time. keep in mind before you leave your home, you want to make your list, i've got mine right here, compare prices, and set a budget. i'll tell you, the temptation is real to spend because of the deals. back to you. >> thank you so much. great seeing you. it's that time of year again when millions of americans also hit the road or the skies to spend the holidays with family and loved ones. millions of americans have already traveled near and far for the thanksgiving holiday. severe weather across the south could threaten many people's plans. joining us now is ron allen live from new york's laguardia airport. what's the situation on the ground at lga.
8:06 am
>> reporter: it's quiet. it's not a busy travel day here just yet nor across the country. we're looking at the map and it tells you that there are only a handful of cancellations that have happened or delays and that was actually the same case yesterday, thursday, on thanksgiving day. this is day you might think of as perhaps the quiet before the storm, if you will. look around here behind me. things are moving smoothly. we looked at the tsa lines earlier and they're moving quickly as well. short weight times and looking at the numbers over the last few days, the tsa -- it's not quite up to where it was prepandemic 2019. it's a bit ahead of last year and the year before as you might expect. but not quite to the record levels of 2019. of course, the big test of all this will come on sunday which is predicted to be one of the busiest travel days we've had in a very, very long time. that's when so many people are going to be trying to end their thanksgiving holiday. the tsa, the airlines, they've
8:07 am
been on notice that this was going to happen, it was going to come. and especially because of all the travel chaos that we had during the spring and summer, so they increased staffing, their schedules are trying to anticipate all of this. at the moment, it seems to be working out fairly well. the big test will come on sunday. the big variable in all of this, as always is the weather. we've had some showers roll in this morning, but here at laguardia, we have a limited vantage point of things. there's been one cancellation that we've seen this morning in this area. and there are other weather issues looming saturday and sunday which could throw a wrench in things. it only takes one storm to cause chaos for hundreds and hundreds of miles. this system is very delicate. at the moment, today seems to be a day when people are chilling out, taking it easy after a big thanksgiving celebration. we've talked to a number of people who are trying to get out of dodge a little early, get ahead of the traffic, the travel traffic. but at the moment, things are
8:08 am
generally calm. it's good to say. but, of course, who knows what the next couple days are going to bring in. sunday is the big day to watch out for. jose? >> ron allen, thank you so very much from new york city. appreciate it. ron, i think it's important that you bring up the weather issue and how that could affect weather and whether could affect travel plans. let's turn to michelle grossman. good morning. how do things look? >> hey there, jose, we're not looking great on sunday. we've had a great start to the holiday week. we have some hiccups. by sunday, we have some major hubs that will be impacted. taking a look at satellite and radar, we're a little more active than we have been the past few days. we have a storm system entering the southern plains. even some snow on the backside of that system in portions of new mexico, far western texas. we have some green showing up on the map on the pacific northwest. that's a storm system that's coming onto shore that's going to bring some mountain snow. and then we have that cold front
8:09 am
that ron was talking about bringing rain to the portions of the northeast and mid-atlantic. that will start to clear as we head through the afternoon. it's really the southern plains that we're going to be watching over the next few days. by sunday, watching the east again. for today, we could see some impacts from boston to d.c. into charlotte, atlanta with that cold front moving through. it's the southern plains and dallas where we're looking at the potential for heavy rain. could be localized flooding as well. and satellite could see some possible slowdowns as well. the good news is on saturday in the east coast t great lakes, the midwest, we're going to clear it out. but dallas and houston, some really heavy rain, a new storm system comes on shore, we're going to see heavy rain. could see up to 4 inches in some spots. by sunday, this is what i was talking about with a not so great day weather-wise, boston, new york city, philadelphia, d.c. salt lake city, seattle could see possible slowdowns as well.
8:10 am
sunday, that's a really busy day and it looks like weather will impact some flying. >> thank you so much. really appreciate that. we also have an update this morning on the condition of the two victims still hospitalized following a mass shooting in walmart. one patient remains in critical condition while the other upgraded from critical to fair condition overnight. we're also learning that police say they discovered a note on the cell phone of the suspect found on the scene. police are looking for a motive after he opened fire in the store. cal perry is in chesapeake, virginia, with the very latest. what do we know? >> reporter: good morning, jose. so within 24 hours of the shooting, we know that the fbi backed by the atf searched the suspect's house. in the iphone, was a note.
8:11 am
i will generalize what was said in it. this was a highly paranoid individual who said that he believed his co-workers were laughing at him behind his back, that they were talking about him, that his phone was hacked, jose. there's so much about this note that would indicate a level of paranoia beyond that of sort of an individual who would otherwise be mentally stable. there was a number of references that were religious references that quite frankly were nonsensical. the one thing about this note that investigators can use is the discussion, again, about the gunman's relationship to the people that he worked with. we know that the six people who died in the walmart behind me worked with this gunman and it wasn't clear until this note was released why those individuals were targeted. this note is not going to bring any closure or any better understanding to the families who lost loved ones. yesterday we saw a family member just absolutely stricken with
8:12 am
grief. and that's not going to change, jose. what will change is investigators have a better sense of what happened. the other thing that was released today was information about the firearm. we understand that the individual who carried out this attack bought the firearm the morning of the shooting. so on tuesday morning, and bought that handgun legally here in the state of virginia, jose. >> thank you very much. appreciate it. now, to georgia where early voting for the senate runoff election can take place tomorrow after a legal battle. georgia state supreme court denied gop efforts to block early voting from happening on the saturday after thanksgiving which the georgia secretary of state had argued was not allowed under new voting laws. this ruling comes days after former president obama announced that he will headline a rally promoting democratic senate candidate raphael warnock on december 1st. joining us now is tia mitchell. thank you for being with us this
8:13 am
morning. what are you hearing from voters and election workers on the ground in georgia today? >> well, you know, today is still a day off for those election workers. there is no early voting in georgia today. but early voting did start earlier in the week and it will continue in at least of some of georgia counties over the weekend before starting in ernest statewide on monday. what we're hearing from a lot of voters is they plan to vote in person, vote early. there's a lot of energy around having their voices heard ahead of this runoff that might not be as pivotal as it could have been with the balance of power. but both parties do still believe that, you know, there's a lot at stake in this race. >> so, tia, how will the state supreme court ruling affect, do you think, turnout in early voting? >> i think it's energized
8:14 am
democrats. unfortunately, one of the by-products of the state putting out its guidance, we have to be clear, the guidance was based on their interpretation of law, but the law also existed before the 2021 runoff and the state allowed saturday voting right after christmas. so, you know, it was interpreted as -- particularly by democrats as republican state leaders trying to keep people from having access to the polls, particularly on weekends where we know it's sometimes more convenient for people who work regular 9:00 to 5:00s monday through friday. it was a rallying cry for democrats saying they're trying to keep you from voting. we're not going to let that happen. the question is, a lot of the republican counties had to come along once early voting on the weekend became an option, will their voters have the
8:15 am
opportunity to vote, will they do so? >> meanwhile, tia, former president obama announced he's going to be campaigning with warnock on december 1st. are we expecting any high-ranking republicans to campaign with walker? >> it depends on what you consider high-ranking. he's had other u.s. senators, ted cruz, lindsey graham, rick scott have campaigned with him and of course governor brian kemp has campaigned with herschel walker. we have not heard from former president trump. he would be the highest ranking. he would be, you know, the equivalent of an obama. so far, there have not been any announcements that president trump is coming to campaign with herschel walker, although, he did fully endorse herschel walker, taking even time out of his own re-election launch to say, yes, i want you to vote for herschel walker. >> tia, as you know, president biden announced that he's going to be renewing his push for a
8:16 am
national assault weapons ban, a move which is likely to probably stall in congress. do you think this issue is something that can bring voters out in georgia on one side or the other? >> you know, i do think that the issue of guns, which is kind of one subset of the overall issue of crime, is really important to voters. when we polled voters both formally and informally ahead of the general election, we heard over and over again that crime is of concern from voters in both parties. but we know that interpretation is different. democrats are more likely to support gun control measures, republicans are more likely to support legal access to guns which they think can help good guys deter the bad guys. so i think however the issue of assault weapon ban particularly is more of a rallying cry for democrats.
8:17 am
>> it's great seeing you. thank you for being with us this morning. i really do. >> thank you. coming up, the fate of daca. democrats are pushing through legislation, will anything be done? i'll talk with a dreamer about the stakes of this moment. also china and covid chaos. cases are hitting record highs spurring lockdowns and anger, including protests at a victory where the world's iphones are made. just really unusual to be able to see these images. what it means for supplies ahead of the holidays and more next. you're watching "jose diaz-balart reports." diaz-balart reports. business unlimited. it's just right for my little business. unlimited premium data. unlimited hotspot data. especially people wanting iphones after protests this week at apple's main supplier boiled over. chaotic scenes at the huge foxconn factor. according to workers, the protests were sparked by a pay dispute as well as covid rules at the plant which has been locked down for weeks. most of the people protesting were new hires recruited after an exodus from the factory ahead of the lockdown last month. foxconn has issued a statement apologizing and offering bonuses to who new workers who want to quit and that's posing a major disruption to apple's production ahead of a busy holiday season. delivery times for iphones will be impacted too because the city where the factory is located is also under lockdown. in a statement to nbc news, apple says it has team members on the ground adding we're

8:25 am
international university school of international public affairs. professor, thank you so much for being with us. there have been both inflation and interest rate hikes that we haven't experienced in decades. what does the new data tell you about the short-term outlook for our economy? >> first, i would like to wish our viewers a happy thanksgiving. >> likewise, thank you. >> it's started to ease down. so the latest report are the inflation was about 7.7% for the last month which is a welcome decrease from the previous month. it's still quite high relative to what we have experienced for the past four decades really. so since the late '70s, we haven't seen this level of inflation. but there are signs that inflation is going to be -- start decreasing starting with next year.
8:26 am
so the federal reserve board -- >> i'm sorry. continue. >> so the federal reserve board has been quite aggressive in trying to bring inflation under control both by increasing the interest rate and -- which would slow down economic growth and ultimately have a negative impact on prices. and through their signaling that they're very serious about keeping inflation under control. and this statement that they're putting out there and this, you know, quick increase in the interest rate, it's going to have an impact on expectation which is being fed into inflation, into wage increases and so on. it's not just that by increasing the interest rate the fed is going to try to achieve to slow down the economy. but their statement are done so
8:27 am
that people's expectations about inflation are going to be kept under control. >> so, professor, when we talk about short-term prices like for diesel fuel, heating oil are still really high. and the grocery store, it's really even worse with massive year-over-year increases in the price of milk, eggs, butter, take a look at that. beef has dropped 3.6% which is just great. the price of milk up 14%. eggs almost 44%. better up 33%, bread up 14%, baby food up 11%. the basic foods that we as a family need to have in our homes, the prices continue to go up. do you see any change in that? >> so the price is relative to last year for food and gas are significantly higher. in fact, much higher than just
8:28 am
the average inflation rate. but we saw some relief in terms of the energy prices. if we compare to the previous year, the price of energy increased by about 20%. but if we compare it to june of this year, the price of energy actually decreased by about 10%. so the price of gas, the price of a gallon of gas, at some point it was close to $5. now it's closer to $3 per gallon. so we see a decrease in price of energy in the past few months which gives us hope that that's going to continue into the future. >> i thank you so much for being with us. it's really a treat to be able to speak with you. thank you for your time. >> thank you so much. it was a pleasure. next, new life after nine

8:38 am
they're in a really tough predicament, about to give birth or with, you know, new babies. incubators use a lot of energy. as you said, they're powering on. they're staying and they're going to raise their children in ukraine and they're not going to let the kremlin, you know, deter them. >> thanksgiving marked nine months of this war that has been littered with russian failures on the battlefield. what do you think is putin's strategy going forward after very little success? >> you mentioned in your introduction, you know, all the refugees. i think his strategy now is to break the will of the ukrainians if he can, although, as your segment points out, that's not working very well. the second way that he might -- the second will that he wants to break is international will to support ukraine. and here i think, you know, the taking out of energy supply which, of course, also affects
8:39 am
water supply and heat, that something that could lead to increased refugee flows and that is targeted at the west. the refugees will go towards other parts of europe and put strain on the existing system and, of course, the europeans themselves are dealing now with how they can buy fuel from russia at a lower cost with always the danger that the russia's will cut them off entirely. so the objective putin has is to break the will of the ukrainian people or the international community supporting the ukrainians. >> it's just so horrible to see in this day and age, we still have countries and leaders that are willing to use human suffering as pawns, as chips to their bigger, you know, policy and we see it, you know -- what putin is doing, look what's happening in latin america. i mean, you know, you have
