11:00 am
everybody, good afternoon to you, i'm yasmin vossoughian. the holiday crash, millions taking to the roads, and the
11:01 am
air in a rush to get home. we are live, cover one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. new details emerging in the possible motive behind the deadly shooting at a virginia walmart. and, after a week of mass shootings in virginia and colorado, president biden is vowing to go after the guns. >> the idea we still allow semiautomatic weapons to be purchased is sick. it's sick. it has no, no, social redeeming values. >> today, early voting happening right now, in the state of georgia. voting for republicans trying to stop it from happening. and former president donald trump under fire today over a meeting with kanye west. but, it's not the rapper that is drawing the most far. it is the person that he brought with him. that story, ahead, as well. we want to begin with the mad dash to return home this holiday weekend. saturday afternoon, thanksgiving holiday, traffic on the, roads turning to pre-pandemic levels, by the way, making this one of the most
11:02 am
busiest holidays travel weekends in years. the only solace for drivers trapped in traffic, is gas prices surprisingly dropping to the lowest since back in february. that's still the highest ever on record during a thanksgiving holiday, averaging over three 60 a gallon, but obviously, way lower than peak. just a few months ago. i want to bring in marissa parson, on the very busy are 95 corridor. in maryland. take us there, if you will, this is saturday, not quite sunday, some folks still camping, out wherever they, where for the holidays. want to subsequently head home tomorrow. but how are things looking today? how are drivers dealing with the rush? >> so, it's definitely looking busy, when we were here in this exact same spot on wednesday, it is looking a lot more busy today than it was on wednesday. earlier, we were seeing this type of crowding, whether was on the travel plaza or the gas pumps on the other side of the camera, or this line, heading
11:03 am
up to our 95, behind me, this is all looking a lot more busy. this time than it wasn't wednesday. and one of the things could be due to remote work. we will get to that in just a moment. when it comes to conditions, one thing we also want to mention is that things are looking sunny where we are now. but keep an eye on the weather, between today and tomorrow. certain parts of the country could be facing some heavy rains, and that could certainly have an impact on travel. whether you are taking to the, road or taking to the skies. >> tell me about health folks, marissa, are traveling differently now than they were before the pandemic. >> so those two things that are kind of interesting to keep an eye on here. the cost of travel is a huge one. with inflation, we are looking at the tickets to get on a flight, 35% more now than they were this time last year. so, that certainly people who were, saying they are traveling differently, as a result of that. maybe carpooling on the road, gas, as you just mentioned, yes, it has gone down since
11:04 am
february. but it's more expensive now than it was before. then, remote work. this has been so interesting to talk to people about. we talked to a lot of people, who said they loved much earlier than they normally did because they have the flexibility to do so. take a listen. >> i think we have a lot more flexibility, we both work remote from home so it gave us more flexibility on, you know, when we can leave. >> when you talk to your friends and family, is that something you are seeing? are there people leaving at different times than they would have years prior because of remote working? >> people are saying it longer because they can work from wherever they are. so instead of just going up for the thanksgiving weekend, boasting longer. >> so we can't definitively say if it was a matter of remote working that meant why we weren't seeing the same crowds that we were on wednesday. however, certainly something that analysts are going to be looking into. and make no mistake, however, 49 million drivers still expected to take to the roads, throughout this entire
11:05 am
thanksgiving holiday. weeks, driving, regardless of what people are doing it specifically, still the preferred method for thanksgiving holiday travel. >> stay longer after a thanksgiving holiday. that takes some patients. thanks so much, appreciated. let's go to another big story we are following, everybody, new information on the suspect of killing six people and injuring seven others in west virginia walmart. the man who police say died by suicide left a rambling note on his phone. addressed to god. i want to bring in julie tsirkin has following the story for. us julie, talk to me, what more do we know about this note? whether he actually wrote this and what it contained? >> yeah, according to law enforcement he did not -- he did write this note, they just don't know when he wrote. it and they don't know if it was the day of the shooting, or two days before thanksgiving. his house, the gunman's house is the place where they found the most evidence, including
11:06 am
the fact that he bought the gun he used, the nine millimeter handgun, that morning, tuesday morning, and he bought it legally. lot enforcement officials know this because they found a receipt band -- and the box the gun wasn't in his house. also a was there in chesapeake, about four hours from d.c., sectioned off a vehicle of interest, that they were pouring over, in the hours after the shooting take place. i did speak to some folks who were showing up on thanksgiving in the early hours of the morning, to lay flowers, a candle, a bible anything they could in memory of the six people who died. all employees of the store take a listen to what they told me about their interactions with the possible gunman. this is what she told. me watch. >> i did not know the shooter but i often would walk by him and say hi to him. he was always looking very disturbed, and very upset. he would say hi to me buddy kept on going. he was always in a hurry. he had a very soft voice, very shallow voice. and i did think many times something's not right with him.
11:07 am
he's not happy. >> yeah, pat told, me and others told me as well, who frequented this location, that this was their sense of community. they went to this walmart very often, and she was just praying that the employee she interacted with most frequently did not end up on the list of victims that were released. and i quickly want to note, yasmin, because overnight police also made public the name of that 16-year-old boy who just started working there, just a few months ago. they made his name publicly, made his photo public as well. it is fernando chavis barón, and he was 16 years old. those two others recovering in the hospitals, including one still in critical condition. asthma? >> just horrible. julie tsirkin, thank you. then we go to colorado springs, a solidarity march is set to honor the five killed and wounded in -- club q, the lgbtq bar. we know that the shooter is
11:08 am
being held for murder and a crime. he made the first court appearance on wednesday. formal charges are expected on december 6th hearing. in the wake of all these mass shootings across the country this week, the president now pledging to push an assault weapons ban, during this congress before republicans take the house in january. how is he actually gonna get it done? and bc's or porter ali from washington. i toss the question over to you, ali, you would think if there's momentum about getting an assault weapons ban passed it would be -- it would've been pastor uvalde. how does the president think he can get it done now? >> unfortunately, yasmin, we've seen too many of these inflection points where there should have been enough momentum to get more gun violence prevention legislation over the finish line, and instead, when we saw several months, ago was legislation passed, deemed significant, because it was the most
11:09 am
significant action that we had seen in the space, at some time. also, it was very moderate, very targeted, very narrow, and it's all that could get through in a congress that looks like this one. even as democrats hold both the house and the senate. that doesn't mean that president biden isn't going to try. and you heard him on thanksgiving day. as he was talking about this. how visceral his anger was. look, listen. >> the idea we still allow some me automatic weapons to be put just is sick. it's just sick. >> can you do anything about gun laws? >> i'm gonna try. >> will you do? >> i'm gonna try to get rid of assault weapons. >> and sure look we've seen biden say this before, try to make the push on an assault weapons ban. yes, the house has passed that legislation time is running out. they've got a few weeks left in this congress, and then we know, this goes out the window, because republicans will hold the house. but, quite frankly, you look at the numbers on the hill right now and this is not getting cat
11:10 am
past. even though as it stands with democrats control in both houses so for biden, as he's trying to make this push again, using the presidential bully pulpit, may frankly be's best way forward. >> i wonder, a lot of times when the president put out something like this it's more to get folks on the record, lawmakers on the, record voting against and law salt up and ban, when you see a heightened sense of fear with all of these mass shootings happening across the country. right? so my question, is is the top at all for bringing something like this to the floor for a vote either from parents has bickered of pelosi, or andrew schumer. >> probably not right, now because they have a stacked list that they need to attack during this lame duck period. it's everything from election reform from same-sex codification, funding the government, that's top of the list, of course, but there is also the reality of getting people on, record on the republican side, on the democratic, side people are so entrenched here, that we pretty
11:11 am
much know where everyone is. the record is cast. and people in congress can look to having done something on gun legislation. but at the same time, something like, this an assault weapons ban, there's many republicans would be happy to have their vote no -- that would behoove them in their, base in the same way that for democrats, voting for an assault weapons ban would be helpful to them. so the politics here is just, as always, so inextricably linked with the policy discussion on this. and it doesn't seem like changes coming fast. >> all right, ali batali, as always, my friend. we are keeping a close eye on this growing flaw fallout from trump's dinner with daniel, was now legally known as ye, as well as moratorium c, nick fuentes. this is a notorious holocaust denier, white supremacist as well. here is what ye had to say about that meeting. >> so trump is really impressed with nick fuentes. and nick fuentes, unlike so
11:12 am
many lawyers, and so many people, that he was left, with on this 2020 campaign, he's actually a loyalist. he didn't know what the lawyers is, you'll still have your loyalists. >> so all this happens in the face of major backlash. former president claiming he knew nothing about his race defendant asymmetric demand dinner guest, though he has not taken the step of denouncing fuentes and his views. we want to bring in on yetna was, news our chief couldn't -- correspondent and anchor and an msnbc contributor. thank you for joining us, appreciate, it my friend, let me read for you how one longtime trump advisor puts this whole thing, right, without swearing, of course, because they do swear, in fact, in this quote. this is a -- nightmare. if people are looking for run descendants to run against trump, here is another reason why. since this came to light, the former president has posted many times on truth social that he didn't know who nick fuentes was, didn't really know his
11:13 am
character, what he was involved, and so on and so forth. do you feel as, if even former president now at this point, understanding the damage that could've been done, by dining with someone like let alone 20 west, right, nick fuentes. >> i think the answer is clearly not. here's the deal, ever since the details of the meeting have been reported, have been confirmed, and it's been made very clear to people, exactly who nick fuentes, is not to mention the conservative marks that trump that -- he has made. he made some antisemitic marks that cost him his partnerships and business deals, he also had years of making anti-black racist statements, including saying that races -- that slavery was a choice. trump said that he had invited ye, kanye west, to come to dinner in mar-a-lago. he didn't know who nick fuentes was, and did know anything about him. but he should know in the days since. and let's take a minute to remind everyone who nick fuentes is. he's a 24-year-old, he as an

organization called america first. he's an unabashedly, racist, white supremacist, antisemite. he has said things on his show, like the military should go into black neighborhoods. he said that jews should leave the country. he called for his supporters after the november 2020 election to storm every capital across america. a number of his followers were in, fact it, involved in the january 6th insurrection. this is a man who espouses some very dangerous ideas. and those ideas have very dangerous, real world consequences. now, that quote that you read from a trump advisor, i do want to note, that was delivered on the condition of anonymity. and this is the problem once again. you have a number of people who recognize exactly how dangerous it is to be associating someone like this. and not come out and condemn his views. but they're -- >> there not going -- to >> gather knocking on the record to say. it >> here's the thing, we've kind of watched the time of
11:15 am
which former president was you, think back to charlottesville, right, all these moments where we had questions and conversations surrounding the fact that the president said things were placed -- blatantly racist, going on on both sides, so on, so forth. but it never hurt. him he didn't win the reelection, 2020, but you had a lot of voters voted for him come 2020. and spite of these comments. so i'm wondering, even, when you see a comment like, that from a former trump advisor, who is not willing to go on the record, why is it they feel like this is a nightmare, as they put it, seeing as it has not affected him in the past? >> let's remind folks, it's not just when he was president. he ran on many of these ideas. the first public statements he delivered for an anti-immigrant, racist, remarks about mexican people coming across the border. he ran on the idea of banning all muslims from entering this country. and none of that was politically disqualified, to

republican leadership or his fellow republicans. what we are seeing now, if there's any, break or any difference now, is that we are talking after these most recent midterms. there is once again a political calculus at play. you saw some people, you did see some people, including his handpicked former ambassador to israel, david friedman, come right up and condemn this meeting, and they directly to the former president, who are better than this. you also see folks like the rnc member, bill pollack tucci, who came right out and said, this is despicable. and it shows that the former presidents actions and judgment are despicable and indefensible. he tweeted this i, reached out to him about it and you are starting to see to hear republicans who are starting to say after these midterm elections in which they failed to take the senate on, number of mr. trump's handpicked candidates underperformed in their races. there are folks looking at the calculus and saying is it worth
11:17 am
it to continue standing back from. those few and far between. we haven't seen a number of republican leadership condemning nick fuentes via at the meeting with the president. >> folks speaking, out i can't help but wonder if this is because they think what he did was wrong or because they feel like as a viable challenger, i.e., ron desantis, and that trump is not necessarily the winner that they thought he was. i'm trying to distance himself whom not because of the ones -- >> and it's a present pleasure my friend. , thank you. okay, still, had care like not about about a gracefully from the arizona senate race, despite -- she's not suing, facing a new challenge, dropping temperatures, millions of ukrainians preparing for winter amid massive power outages. we will be right back. l be right back.

president donald trump's legal challenges to get a holiday during the last week. these are some development seem out of missed. number one, the supreme court has denied the former presidents request to keep his tax returns from congress after years of fighting in court to prevent the release to lawmakers. second, trump's lawyers had a rough day in court and battle do limit the government's probe into classified records at mar-a-lago. making a number of arguments

11:52 am
wouldn't foolishly would be if you will testify? what if he refuses. what tools does he have in his tool box to in fact refuse because that's exactly [interpreter] what he did to the house investigating committee. >> yes, jasmine, i would bet $1, that's my batting limit, i'm not a high roller. that mike pence would see the inside of a federal grand jury, hearing room, he kind of inflame infamously told congress the january six committee that he was, quote, closing the door, on appearing before them. and he also said, seven words that i think should leave the american voters to decide that he is unqualified to lip office in the future. he said, congress has no right to my testimony. when we realized that congress is involved in an investigation to try to legislate, try to pass new laws, to prevent what happened on january 6th, from ever happening again on an attack on democracy, peaceful transfer of power, mike pence has some of the most directly

relevant evidence, because he is what we call a fact witness. he was the victim of donald trump's pressure campaign, trying to get him to violate the law, the electoral count act, and mike pence has said congress and by extension the american people have no right to my testimony. i don't understand how he can maintain that when he's a central figure with some of the most important evidence. be that as it may, now the special counsel wants to interview, him and i predict after, that interview whether he grants the request for a voluntary interview or not. he will go into the grand jury. he can't close the door on that. and any prosecutor, yasmin, worth his or her salt, we'll look at him as one of the main fact witnesses, in the insurrection investigation. i can promise you, he will see the inside of a grand jury hearing room. >> here's the thing. you actually say, by mike pence
11:54 am
not offering his testimony to the committee, that would disqualify him as a viable candidate heading into 2024, why is that? >> so, because we know, donald trump just relentlessly attempted to get mike pence to do the wrong thing, to refuse to certify joe biden's win, when pence was presiding report code of your electoral college votes, instead, mike pence decided to continue to bury donald trump's crimes. not disclose them to congress or the american people or congressional testimony, so, if he's unwilling to try to help protect and promote democracy, and involve himself in the process of providing congress information that could help them pass appropriate laws to stop the next insurrection, how in the world would anybody be comfortable voting for him, for public office again,

recognizing, he is not willing to do the hard work of democracy? >> i also want to talk about, jack smith. because we know, now, the president has taken aim at jack smith's wife. on truth social. specifically her comments regarding politics. what is problematic about this? >> what isn't problematic about it? from what i can tell you in my 30 years as a prosecutor, anytime the evidence was strong, you know what the defendant with the target of the investigation did? they attacked me, they attacked my law enforcement team, my fbi agents, because they knew they couldn't win on the evidence. so on said, they had to attack the messenger. the people who were responsible for prosecuting them, and holding them accountable. people will say, now, isn't there a conflict? if jack smith's wife is being attacked? won't he have to rise to defend
11:56 am
her? if it was that easy, anytime we were investigating someone for crime, if they could just attack one of our family members, create a conflict that the prosecutor to remove himself or herself from the case, you know what that would do? it would give people like donald trump incentive to attack the family members of prosecutors. so, this will not derail or slow down jackson it's -- not for one, minute my estimation. >> glenn, as always, we appreciate you sir, thank you. all, right coming, up at the top of the hour, kevin mccarthy's dreams of becoming speaker of the house may be in danger. how close he is to losing his edge. and who else could be up for the job? we are back. job? we are back. . yeah, isn't it a bargain? you know that bargain detergent is 85% water, right? really? it's this much water!
