have let to eke out winds with this democratic majority congress before they lose it in january. the agenda, unfortunately, appears to have been largely made out for the president by back-to-back mass shootings in colorado and virginia in the last week. biden responded with a renewed call on congress to ban assault weapons before this lame duck session ends, and an incoming republican majority makes that impossible. also on the table in congress, bills to reform congress's role in counting electoral votes in presidential elections, and a push to finance a cure our elections ahead of the next cycle. and, the uncertainty all but promised by a split congress. and the georgia senate runoff between were knopf and walker is now officially underway, as

a court ordered early voting begin began today. both candidates using this holiday weekend to make their final pitches to voters. let's discuss it all. let's get started. joining me now, congresswoman sheila jackson lee, democrat of texas and a member of the judiciary, budget, and homeland security committees. congresswoman, thank you for joining us tonight. with the house majority can secured for republicans in the next congress, current health leader minority kevin mccarthy in the midst of his push to become speaker has pledged to strip a handful of house democrats, adam ship, eric swalwell, and alone omar, from their committee assignments. all three democrats have been vocal in their criticisms of former president trump. schiff, having managed trump's

first impeachment trial. swalwell, his second of course. and, removing the lawmakers from the assignments would require a majority vote in the house. do you see that actually happening in the next republican led congress, congresswoman? >> reverend sharpton, it is a delight to be with you. happy thanksgiving to all. and let me just say, democrats are going to be the adults in the united states congress. they are going to focus on legislation, but we are going to fight and defend our members. and the reason why we have good grounds to stand on, because the premise that mccarthy is utilizing is tit-for-tat and vengeance. his vengeance is the wrong directive because the members who had their committees removed threatens the life of another member and the president of the united states. that is what congress windows are just a cartoon that showed the murdering of congress woman cortez and knives towards the

president. and marjorie taylor greene, and antisemitic, anti-muslim, had indicated that the pentagon was not by a plane in 9/11 and that there was a threat or threaten the lives of democratic leadership. that is about dot, that is about loss of life, that is violence. and if you are going to stand on the mirage that you are doing the same thing when the only acts that you have is to appease your right wing for people who don't with policy, intelligence committee members have a right to investigate actual are well and congressman schiff. congressman omar has a right to a public policy views, as does cortez are ocasio-cortez. so i don't think they are going to get anywhere. i think it is absolutely an insult. it degrades the congress. and i hope that the limited leadership them as mccarthy has, that he will not use it in this

frivolous manner. but i for one member of the judiciary committee will be fighting to protect their members on the policies that help the american people. >> i recall what you said about these other members of congress that had used threatening and all kind of viral and really dangerous accusations against other members of congress. i don't remember kevin mccarthy denouncing them, either. not only did he not try to remove them, i don't even remember his denouncing them. did he? >> while he was trying to defend them in the public manner. he alleges that he spoke to them quietly in private. but that did nothing to the potential threat, and let me just say this, reverend sharpton, if it is very well-documented that words nowadays can actually break your bones. words have generated violence. we have seen that since the former president of the united states generated his first

remark, beat him up. i will pay for your lawyers. and violence has been generated by words, and so for leader mccarthy at that time not to denounce these actions in a most vigorous way was also saddened shameful at the same time. >> never said a mumbling word. congresswoman, the new york times first reported this week that the justice department wants answers from former vice president mike pence in connection with its criminal investigation of donald trump's role in the events of january six. according to the times, pence is considering this request after directing the house select committee probe on january 6th as partisan and telling cbs that congress, quote, has no right to his testimony as a former vice president. what is your reaction to that? >> vice president pence asked

ask himself, is he a patriot or is he still holding to donald trump? is he a patriot? if he is a patriot and seeking to be president of the united states, which we surmise he will, then first of all he should have answered the general six committee that is only doing their patriotic duty which is to determine why we were attacked on january six and an insurrection, but in that attempt to bring the government down and to end the peaceful transfer of power which then is to suggest that there was treason and a coup d'état. and so now, i would say to him he has no other option other than to respond to the duly interested responsibilities at the highest legal options if the land. the department of justice, and those who are investigating whether or not our country was attacked. he has the information directly. this is a criminal investigation, potentially against donald trump. this is not about him being a former president. the question is whether or not he actively conspired to stop

the peaceful transfer of government and to do it violently. we know that the voices outside said, hang mike pence. he was in the center of the storm and we know the communications were by the former president himself, is that mike is the only one that can stop this and put us back in power. now how can you not answer in a criminal mastication as it relates to getting the truth out? he has to answer. his question is as a patriot, or is he still beholding to donald trump. >> and as we follow the law. and we are talking about decriminalization. let me ask you this? it appears that gun control music precedent for democrats in the last few weeks if the slaying accession. president biden on thursday, reiterating his call for a bill banning's so-called assault weapons after a pair of horrific mass shootings in colorado springs. a night cloud club there in

injured in critical condition in the state of virginia. and then, to walmart. and then of course the colorado springs which seems to be an attack on the lgbtq+ community. whatever it is, discrimination, it's hatefulness. the tool of choice is a gun and it is in most instances and automatic weapon or a handgun that has the capacity to shoot several rounds. and so i am committed to pushing forward president biden, and also including my storage bill which is the enlivens doored bill which also plays a lot in holding people responsible for leading guns around for young people to access them. particularly those weapons that are the weapons of choice. we have no other choice, and the question, is are we are going to be adults on the floor of the house and recognize that the world watches as we kill kill. 440 million guns, rev. more than people in the united states. and we know, as i think i said earlier, that the choice of weapon for young men, tragically those who are now

the house? >> amazing. it would be amazing because then we would be able to solemnly move forward. they would have the committee leadership, they would have the numbers on the committee, and i might say without honesty and respect, our peoples views. but we cannot continue to have obstacles in the senate that delays us from getting items done. so if we pass legislation in the house, maybe we might have a miracle and passing legislation and get it to the senate. or the senate can be the lead and pass the legislation, and then the house could do another thing but work on the legislation that the senate passed. it would be a mighty great step. maybe we would even get -- fully moving forward. because that needs to be done this year either the next year. but in any event, we might be able to do some unique things that would help this country. senator warnock would be a great assets and a formidable senator. i was there last friday, rev, when the decision came out about being able to vote today. i am excited about it.

why should robert e. lee holidays stop people from exercising the right to vote? and, so i am excited. i wish him. well i will be back. >> robert e. lee, the confederate general. you know i am a big supporter of you on that. thank, you congresswoman jackson-lee for being with us. joining me now is little rock arkansas mayor, frank scott junior, who is also the president of the african american mayors association, thank you for joining me on this holiday weekend, mister mayor. mister president. mayor scott, california democratic congresswoman karen bask has been newly elected as mayor of los angeles. has nbc news projected last week, making her not only the first woman to hold the role, but also the first black woman. making history in more ways than one. black mayors will run america's four largest cities now for the

2:16 pm
seeing now is the top 14 of the top 50 cities are being run by black men and black women. and not only that, we also see that close to a third of the nation's gdp is being run by black men and women. and that shows, when you think about the historic, the history makers of a mayor jackson and atlanta, coleman young of detroit, a tom brady of l.a., what they see now is a majority of the most populated cities are being run by black men and women. and that shows the progress and it shows that dr. king stream was not deferred and that we are seeing the dream being realized while there is still yet more work to be done. >> now over the midterm campaign cycle, we saw the gop demonizing major to democratic cities citing the issue of crime. for instance, then republican illinois gubernatorial candidate get darren barely caught chicago a quote, hellhole. and said that city residents are experiencing a surge in crime, similar to the firm the

police departments. we are waking up every day praying for our residents who are being victimized by crime, and we have the ones to get the phone calls. we are the ones who are going to funerals, we are the ones that are going to talk to the families. so we are pushing not only public safety reform, the public safety in general. because when we are knocking on doors, our residents are telling us that they want us to prioritize public safety, but from a holistic approach. so what you are seeing from accra across the nation particularly from black mayors, is a comprehensive and holistic approach to prioritizes target patrols and high crime areas. helps us to get smart on crime by leveraging realtime crime centers, and also helps you understand that we have to push for prevention and treatment programs, mental health services, and understanding that our youth have to have something to do so that they don't find things to do. so we have this very holistic approach that we are pushing, and we see that to this long term impact. it is nothing that is going to be short-lived. it is something that we have to save a generation. and so that is what you are seeing many of us doing. we are seeing that we have to sustain this until we contagion before word.
2:19 pm
so we can say that generation. and so that is what you are seeing from us, and we see the negativity that has been pushed against us. but me having met someone who just came out of a reelection and i'm grateful to the residents of little rock. someone's been with close to $2 million on us pushing that same kind of narrative. but is paramount for us to ensure that we keep public safety at the forefront, that we have this holistic approach, but also that we fight back these negative ideals that are coming from the far-right. >> mayor scott, i want to express my sympathy for the shooting of one of little rock's city employees who worked with the department of housing and neighborhood programs and is currently now in critical condition. in a statement released on friday afternoon, you expressed frustration with the gun violence little rock have seen so far this year and encouraged the city to come together to help fight gun violence in the capital city. this is sadly among the pseudo-gun violence we've seen this past week following the
2:20 pm
two mass shootings in colorado springs, colorado, and chesapeake virginia. what is your message to mayors on what they can do at a local level to address the gun violence epidemic? >> number one, the senseless gun violence that we are all seeing, not only in little rock but across this nation is downright angry. it is frustrating, it is irritating us all. it is hurting us because we are taking the calls, we are being responsive to the families, and so we pray for the city employees right here in the city of little rock that we visited and have prayed with. we know that prayer -- is. dead we have to pray, but we need some action. i encourage mayor to ensure that they are prioritizing public safety, that they are looking at a holistic approach, but particularly as it relates to gun violence. it is hard to be pro public safety if you are not being pro against the illegal activity of guns. and so we have to get these illegal guns off the streets. we have to have policies that are focusing on lost and stolen
2:21 pm
guns that are getting into the wrong hands and creating these issues. and also, we have to focus on mental health services as well. you have to address the key issues. it is the illegal activity of these guns, the distribution of these guns, and that is why many mayors who are part of america's against illegal guns are working together to fix argent two sources legal guns, to ensure that we hold the distributors accountable. because it is impacting our streets, it's impacting our neighbors, and their neighborhoods. >> mayor frank scott junior, thank you for being with us tonight. coming up, congresswoman lauren boebert falls back on the most tired of republican clichés after the tragedy in colorado springs. but her hate based politics appear to be running out of ammunition. i will tell you about it in this week's got to. but first, my colleague richard lurie with today's top news stories. richard? >> reverend, good afternoon. a first, the aftermath of russian marshall strikes into

republican thoughts and prayers after any mass shooting tragedy. when i cannot allow my cynicism to curdle into silence over colorado congresswoman laura bogey ridge. last weekend, after five people were massacred at an lgbtq club in colorado springs just 20 miles outside of her district, goldberg tweeted it to the victims and her families she said they were in her prayers. now it goes without saying her words seem unlikely to be followed by any meaningful action to restrict access the access to firearms. until recently, the congresswoman ran an entire restaurant business around glorify guns. posing with the whole family with rivals around the christmas tree. in her idea of a season's greeting. but i am even more outraged by the fact that representative boebert would offer up her

washington post. and, former republican representative carlos curbelo of florida. dana, let me go to your first. today georgia voters are headed to the polls to cast their ballots in the crucial senate runoff between democrat incumbent raphael warnock and republican challenger herschel walker. some warnock is entering the election with a huge cash advantage of more than $20 million. meanwhile, walker is fighting off reports of a second woman accusing him of pressuring her to have an abortion. allegations he has denied. this week, he released a new campaign ad targeting transgender athletes. despite the mass shooting that happened at a gay club in colorado springs days before. which side it has more momentum going into the december 6th runoff election, dana? >> well reverend, predictions
2:35 pm
in the stay in hr ways perilous but here is all the information i think you need right now. republicans were working very hard to stop people from voting in this election. they went to, court went through the court system to try to prevent people from voting on this very day, in fact. and they lost that battle. so let's just say, when you are confident about your prospects, things are looking good in the election, generally you are not trying to stop people from going out and voting. so, it would seem at this point that the main republican case for supporting, holding your nose and supporting herschel locker was if the control of the senate was in the balance. that is no longer the case. so it is more a situation of do you really want someone like herschel walker representing you in the senate? the abortion news is really nothing new. it's related more of the same. his tendency to just spouted off and say really any things is religious more of the same.
2:36 pm
so we are just seeing a lot more of the same herschel walker, and it would appear the republicans at least are, by their actions trying to limit voting are pretty concerned that if georgians actually get out there vote their man is going to go down. >> carlos, there is new fallout from donald trump's prevent thanksgiving dinner on tuesday at his mar-a-lago club with ye, or ye. and nick faye when for winters. nick for winters is his name, an outspoken antisemite and racist who is one of the country's most notorious young white supremacists. he is a holocaust denier, and is it helping to advise ye in his second presidential campaign. trump took to his social platform to claim that he knew nothing about his views and just moments ago, the white

2:38 pm
who will give him some attention, it will listen to him, he will sit down with. and again, that is just unhealthy. that is unfortunate in this case because he did it with individuals who are promoting hate and bigotry. so this is all just another reminder of who donald trump is, why he was so dangerous for the country when he was in office, and why it is important that he does not return to the presidency. >> it is interesting that he didn't attack ye for bringing four winters to dinner with him. very interesting,. >> that is because ye says nice things about him. for donald trump, the only thing that is important is that you support him and say nice things about him. other than that, you can do whatever you want. >> carlos, sticking to you. let's turn to your state of florida where governor ron desantis is getting major support to run for president. earlier, elon musk said on friday he would support to ron
2:39 pm
desantis in 2024 if the florida governor were to run for president. is to santas ready for the intense focus that is going to be on him as trump's main rival now the trump is a declared candidate? >> that is the big question, rev. without a doubt a lot of republicans are uniting around desantis. they view him as the vessel turned up to trump. the challenge for desantis is that he is essentially going up against his mentor. he came up to the trump arm system. he followed the trump playbook, and now he has to convince that trump base that they shouldn't support trump anymore. that they should support him instead. so he is going to stay quiet here for the rest of the year. he has a legislative session coming up at the beginning of next year. look for the spring and the summer of 2023 for ron desantis to make his move. it is a very tough high wire act he is going to have to pull
2:40 pm
off. but a lot of republicans think he has the capacity and the resources to do it. >> dana, this week president biden reiterated his call to ban assault ripens. associated press reports, quote, a weapons ban is far off in a closely divided congress. but biden and the democrats have become increasingly emboldened in pushing for stronger gun controls, and doing so with no clear electoral consequences, and quote. how optimistic are you the democrats can get a bill done in the lane duck period? >> well it would have to be in the late duck period because, clearly even if the republicans have a four to vote majority, the only way to get that through the house would be with some kind of a discharge position, and that is extremely unlikely. look, every time people have bet against gun control in the last decade or so, they have come out on top.
2:41 pm
because even when it looks good, even when you have had one horrific tragedy after another, the momentum eventually fizzles. the nra and its allies eventually triumph. so if democrats want to do it, they have to act quickly. the calendar however is working against them. so i think you have to say it is unlikely. but democrats should be doing this, not because the politics favorite or don't favorite, but because it is absolutely the right thing to do. and something has to be done about what tragedy is not even every week, we're seeing them every few days. >> thank you both for being with us. next, football is a thanksgiving tradition for many americans. coming up, we will tackle the persistent lack of diversity at the highest ranks of nfl coaching in wake of a shocking new investigation. stay tuned.

from within, including the so-called rudy rule which requires teams to interview a minority candidates for coaching jobs, only three teams currently have black head coaches. in 102 years of lead history, only 26 black men have ever been head coaches, and 13 teams have never had black head coaches according to this study. to what do you attribute a league that is overwhelmingly black in terms of player personnel, having had so few black coaches to meet them? >> well, you have 32 teams and you have 32 distinct owners who have opinions on who should be put in those positions of authority. in a lot of owners minds, they don't necessarily view a black man as the man who is going to lead their franchise, their billion dollar organizations. and until you can get ownership to blue view black men as worthy of the position, we are going to continue to have the cycle of frustration for guys
2:48 pm
who have earned their positions. >> now, i brought up the so-called rooney rule which i know the lead 20 years ago introduced purportedly to address address the lack of top coaches of color. i thought about that as i read one of the articles from this black and future. how nfl teams use black coaches to clean up their messes. the idea being that, when a white head coaches fired during an underperforming season, owners and teams will often look to black coaches in the interim, only for them not to keep that job once the season is over. and from the post reporting, i understand the problem is getting worse. we had former miami dolphins head coach brian flores with us in february just after his federal racial discrimination lawsuit was filed against the league and three of its teams. over hiring practices. can you elaborate on how the league's hiring and firing
2:49 pm
practices affect black coaches specifically, mystery? >> well, there are a couple of things. first off, if you are a black coach and you are in position and you win nine games, you are just as likely to get fired as a white coat to winds six games. so if you are in a position to have interim coaches who come into say cleanup message gets, there have been 15 black interim coaches. only three were promoted to the full-time job. so they are basically saying that you could be the guy to do bob of duty, but you won't be the guy that we invest in building a future around. and that is one of the frustrating things for a lot of coaches. and when you look at nfl history, there've been like you said 26 black head coaches. five of them have been interim 's, who never ascended to the full position. so there will even 21. and when you think about it that way, the numbers get a little bit smaller. and i think that has been a situation that has been baffling to coaches for a long time. because the goalpost continue

to move, and owners approving that they are gonna hire they're going to hire. it has happened this year already. matt wriggles fired, he was released by steve wilkes he's a black coach. but then you have jim or say, after he fired his coach, he just hired jeff saturday to be the head coach who had no experience outside of being a school coach. so he is a white coach who got an opportunity because of his relationship. but not necessarily because acumen. and i think that is where a lot of coaches who have been years of service hoping for an opportunity have been denied because owners are just gonna do whatever they want to do. >> dallas cowboys owner jerry jones was under fire this week after a photo surfaced in a washington post report of a 14 year olds jones in the midst of a crowd of white students on the streets of central high school in little rock arkansas as they attempted to block six black students from integrating central in september of 1957. jones responded that his presence there was a result of
2:51 pm
curiosity and not racial president credit prejudice. still, the cowboys never had a black coach. and i think about the fact that jones is 80. the oldest of nfl's 32 majority owners is nearly 100. the youngest is nearly 60, and all but two are white. and if i wonder if in your view the lack of black nfl coaches is to at least in part to the owners age and racial uniformity, the areas that came up in the backgrounds that they may come from shaping and molding their thoughts. what is your thoughts on that? >> yeah, i mean, for a lot of these owners when if they ever come in contact with black authority figure? a black teacher, a black principal, a black coach? in their minds, their idea of a liter something that they've come across the other pathway. and i think that when you look at the situation which are jones on the photograph that he discussed in this article, one thing that is not necessarily
2:52 pm
to look at him and say that he is a racist and dismissed and say look what he did, but look at just what racism means and what privilege means. this is a man who had an opportunity at age 14 to sort of allow racial progress to take place at his own school. and even if you don't believe him, he said he stood there and watched. so that meant he did nothing. and now he is a man who is one of the most powerful owners when the most prestigious franchises in all sports, and he did nothing to help racial progress. swansea five years he has steadily grown a change in a lot of ways, but in a lot of ways you saw that same 14-year-old except now he has more power to make change throughout the league and he does nothing. and i think that is what has happened throughout with all these owners. they have the opportunity to do it is right, but still they don't appear to be moved. primarily because they don't necessarily look at a black man and calculate in their mind that he is somebody who is worthy of leading our franchise. and as we get a change of heart from these owners and they can change their opinion of what a
