of the last two years already. >> i'll, a really quick question for you. do you think because there is that runoff coming up that it is a bit premature to be having all of these conversations about a 2024 race? >> yes and snow. you and i both know i love presidential politics. but i think at the same time, for most americans i remember voting in iowa mind 20, 19 the first week of iowa, asking people about the presidential election. and while i owens were aware that it was happening in that people have been already coming to their state, trying to build our profile, at the same time they were, like can we just take a beat? and i think that might be where most of america's. certainly the operative donor class and all of these political parties, their luck to have their ducks in a row early. if you want to build a paid presidential campaign with talent, you already have those conversations. that is true for people thinking about, running say they are, running all these conversations already

with. you let's assume that donald trump is telling the truth that he did not know who nick fuentes was well at that dinner. what does it say to you that trump has yet to distance himself or disavow any further connection with fuentes now that he knows who he is and what he stands for? >> i mean this is par in the course for donald trump remember charlottesville and david duke? i am not surprised by this at all, katie but i will say that i have several advisers to the former president, and let me tell, you they are not very happy about this. this is not what they want to be focusing on. they are trying to build a campaign operation. they would rather be trying to take messaging and policy dispositions coming into the new year. and not, this because of the conversations that i've already had with my former close friends. they, say here we go again. he is just not being disciplined. and it is causing a lot of headaches for the individuals close to the former president. >> krista vought, to sir michael's point, the headaches

they're being caused by the people with whom trump's associating. a longtime trump advisor is telling nbc news that the situation is a, quote, nightmare. it does not seem like trump's team has on the ability to gatekeeper he brings to mar-a-lago. do you think we will see more of these nightmares, and what can the biden administration or top top democrats do to spin this in their favor right now? >> good. morning it is great to be back with you. i do think we are going to see a lot more of. this as you just, her this is par for the course for donald trump. think about it this way. he has a dinner and answer some eyes, 20 west, come. over here is nick fuentes come over. and he calls it an eventful. an eventful for trump because that is a sort of person he is. when i was a kid, my grandma had a saying. -- tell me who you walk with and who you stand with i will tell you who you are. we've already seen who donald trump is. both with the david duke piece and the star charlottesville comment that both sides are fine people. in, fact there is a question

what do you think could be the best advice that you would give him in terms of how to capitalize on announcing if he is going to officially make a run for the 2024 opal office again? >> i really appreciated when he was in nantucket this weekend saying i'm here with my family. he is very much a family person that he will get to that question when he gets to that question. i remember working for. and he was saying if i found that you missed a family event like a birthday or an anniversary, something important, for your family, because you are working either you will be a big trouble. so he will take his time and be thoughtful about it but while he does that let me just say that there is a lot of other activity happening just below the surface of the water. to build what will be a juggernaut campaign. part of that is the democratic national committee, which i think is the strongest dnc we've ever seen. donors are lined up, they are ready to go. you see the other candidates are getting behind joe. biden other potential candidate somebody's been interested in running are getting behind them, accordingly. and i think they will have plenty of time to sharpen the

campaign. it really sharpen their message and contrast. about uniting the country, which is what joe biden has done. what we are seeing here is an attempt to almost unite the right again. with the trump pointers reunion. >> sure michael california governor gavin newsom has been pretty open about his national ambitions and obviously we know his name has been bandied about for a while as a possible run for the-able oval office but politico is reporting now that he is told biden directly that he will not challenge the incumbent president in 2024 and it will support biden if he runs for reelection. field it looks like he is clearing out for a biden reelection bid. is it better politics, though, shermichael, for democrats to keep their heads, down get the job done, and keep any questions about who is the 2024 nominee out of the spotlight right now? >> i don't think it really matters. i think democrats do is exceptionally well in midterms and they maintain control of the senate.

you look at the house and while republicans did not regain control marchand was very sit slim and democrats are very competitive or practically every single race. for my disposition as a former's strategist if i was a democrat i would be thinking that everything is on my side and for the most part we have momentum and want to maintain that momentum. i think trump is a blessing in disguise and is in part why many of my friends that i have lunch with and d.c. often as republican strategist we all discussed the fact that nobody wants donald trump because he does give democrats an opportunity to remind swing voters and suburban voters and even some of those moderate republicans who voted for president biden and even some democrats in this most recent midterm why they need to stick for biden going into 2024 it's not donald trump. from a republican disposition there is a serious liability there and the party clearly wants to move in a new direction. they have the internal polling that showcases of donald trump were to move he could not get

enough between urban voters and suburban voters and would literally 7% of moderate leading republicans. if you are a democrat or president biden, i don't think there's anything wrong with coalescing around the president. i don't think there's anything wrong with saying he is very likely going to be our guy and i think you want to build that momentum an expectation as early as possible with donors and with your activist base. so that everyone can begin the process of building the necessary steps going into 2023 and beyond. >> cristobal, how much do you think the announcement by donald trump that he is going to run for the oval office again has created a situation within which we see somebody like gavin newsom, whose name was definitely forefront as possible competitors saying i am out. do you think the trump announcement influence the fact that perhaps joe biden who beat donald trump is going to try to do that again on behalf of the democrats? >> i don't think the trump announcement had an impact on

folks who were considering potentially running for the democratic nomination because let's face that there is going to be somebody with a giant ego and maybe a screws who decides on with a throw my hat in the ring and run against joe biden in the primary. , again i think they'll be absolutely crazy. we have the most successful democratic presidents since lbj just in terms of looking at milestone legislation that has been passed. the most successful midterm in modern history. great work abroad to uniting the world against russia and supporting democracy in the ukraine. so it would be absurd to somebody's to step up and decide to challenge the president. that being said, there is work to do to make sure that our message as democrats is extremely tight. and that would create an echo timber and then we begin to raise the resources that will be needed for a multi billion dollar campaign. , again to defeat donald trump or whoever it is if we take a country in the wrong direction.

nbc news has not independently verified that information but the center for countering digital hate is reporting that there has been an increase in racist antisemitic and other toxic speech on the platform. including the fact that twitter failed to act on 99% of racist tweets directed at soccer players leading up to the world cup. let's not forget that a large number of the contractors responsible for content moderation were either let go or resigned in the chaos that ensued sense mask took over. joining me now is the ceo and national director of the atl, jonathan greenblatt. jonathan it is always so good to see you and we have some tough times going on right now. the adl has warned that there will be dire consequences once this twitter undersea rolls out this week and you are some of the names that i just listed an intro to your interview can you explain more what those consequences could look like? >> katie, it is good to see you,

as. well i would say that it is rather starting to think at this point in the process in terms of elon's acquisition of a new management of twitter, that for someone who said he did not want the site to defend into descend into a house cape that it appears that he is ready to open those gates to hail. the reason why those accounts were suspended over the years is because of disinformation and bigotry and hate which these people were pouring forth onto the surface. so as i think about where we are in america today we have a presidential candidate dining with unrepentant antisemites and bigots, last weekend we had an antisemitic attack in new york city which was averted by the quick action of the fbi. we are still mourning the people who were shot in cold blood in colorado springs and now we have what elon musk said he wanted to be the public square, prepared to be a place

where prejudice runs amok. so i will be really honest katie. i am someone who is cautiously optimistic with elon's reforms. he solve big problems in the past. but this notion that it is somehow free speech to allow slander and incitement on the platform is something i simply do not agree with. i think most americans do not agree with it. and he runs the risk of really jeopardizing what twitter once was. >> yeah, you know, i myself am an avid twitter user. i have seen how it has deteriorated in terms of the quality of the content that has been there. what is the adl doing specifically when it comes to social media platforms to either educate or warren or maybe assist in some way to try to get the reins and on the u.s.? to be able to put it under control if that's even possible? >> that is such a great question into the atl as a percentage of technology in society which works actively

with all of the companies of silicon valley from apple to zoom, from amazon to microsoft. to meta. and, indeed it to twitter. we've dealt with him for. years tackling the challenge of hate speech on their service. we play things out, we share information. but what we have seen again and again and again, and i have the privilege of speaking directly to a lot of here times, is that the reason why we are so concerned is because we think twitter is such a consequential service and we are allowing people who created the toxicity on the platform that led to real word world violence. keep in mind that the conspiracy theories that dominated on twitter for so long exploded in places like pittsburgh and poway and el paso and of course ultimately in washington, d.c., on january the 6th. so well i would say very clearly is to you as i told elon musk and others, we need

these companies to engage constructively and smartly. users of asian to tackle hate speech. i see the chart you put up contradicts what we are seeing it adl. we have seen anti-met some other speeches stay up longer than that before. we have been indicating an obscene toxic content. it is not coming down nearly as quickly as in the past. and considering that human resources have been massively depleting in the company, that would seem to figure a little large as to why it is happening today. look, at the end of the day, katie, adl and i think some of us want to twitter to work for all of its users. for journalists like yourself and watchdogs like my organization. for the whole country. tackling hate speech needs to be all of our commitment because freedom of speech is not the freedom to slander people,. katie freedom of expression should not be the freedom to incite violence.

all about energy. if people are excited about you as a candidate, especially with so much election fatty, they're not gonna show up with herschel walker the mother who brings into the state. >> switching gears slightly and especially because i have you here, senator lindsey graham testifies before georgia special grand jury this past. week the grand jury investigating efforts by donald trump and his allies to overturn the 2020 election results. fulton county prosecutors are wanting to question lizzy graham about phone calls he made to georgia secretary of state brad raffensperger in the weeks after the election. jan, should lindsey graham be worried about his legal exposure? >> yes. they all should be. look, the way that the district attorney in fulton county has been putting together this case, brick-by-brick, clearly from my perspective it looks like they're trying to build a rico. case that is really problematic for anybody who is involved. that is the whole point with rico.

ever sent to the red planet. and that question has always been there. is there life on mars now and was there ever life there in the pass and what can they tell us a bit of special earth is where we see life everywhere? what we discovered three separate studies that came out at the same time show that they have confirmed that this place where perseverance has been rolling around was awash in water on earth. everywhere there is water there is a life and they found hints of the building blocks of life as these organic molecules that are locked in the rocks that the rover is fighting. and this is probably the most exciting part he is collected those samples. and store them away so that eventually we will get them back to earth and scientist can crack them open and hopefully answer that question once and for all of was their life on mars. >> there is another big space headline just about 24 hours ago. nasa's orion spacecraft which

is part of the artemis program set a new record for the farthest distance from earth traveled by a spacecraft designed to carry humans to deep space and to safely return to earth. is this a sign of bigger things to come for the artemis program? >> i think what this shows is that nasa's big test flight of the orion spacecraft is the new moon shaped that they cast to mars hopefully as soon as 2024 there will be astronauts landing on the moon in 2025. on a separate lander. it seems like they are tracking all of their boxes. they are setting new records now the farthest distance is going to get even farther until this as it goes further and it is a really long orbits. there are a lot of milestones to go and you get that spacecraft back. the biggest heat shield ever will be coming in much more harshly than the apollo

capsules and so there is still some urged to go. but so far everything seems to be going well and the big question is -- >> i have less than a minute left but i do have to ask. because as we speak, during this, our spacex's dragon craft is talking with the international space station to deliver supplies like tomato seeds. what can you tell us about what is happening right now? >> very busy in space. this is just part of what life spaces. like astronauts on the international space station needs supplies and spacex is one of the two companies that flies those missions for nasa and the drive with over three and a half tons. some tomato seeds which have been used to grow as well as test their exposure to the space environments. also has new solar rays for spacewalks here and food and sometimes there's ice cream in the freezer. and the astronauts really enjoy that. it is just something they need
