officially to republicans. chief among them is going to be funding the government, funding it at this point runs out in mid december. all parties involved have already been working towards with the consensus on that is going to be. you and i both know having done many of these government funding deadlines before. typically there's always that flurry of action right before the deadline. certainly as congress comes back into town at the beginning of next week, we're going to be looking to see what the contours of government funding are going to look like. if there are any snafu's coming along the way. that's not the only thing here, either. on the democratic side, they want to work on things like passing election reform and same-sex marriage codification. the wheels are kind of already grinding in motion on both of those fronts. then there is what's going on with republicans right now. which is figuring out of your kevin mccarthy, how you're going to get to that magic number of 218 votes to become how speaker. now that you know that republicans are going to have control of the chamber. the margins are gonna be really thin. republicans actively thinking about what that's going to look like. democrats to frankly. but that's --
9:05 am
their priorities for the start next year. you can hear it when you listen to republicans on the sunday show. you also hear adam schiff giving the democratic mindset around this. listen. >> he's been the leader of our team. he's going to stay the leader of our team. i certainly look forward to when we get past -- we can get to work. at these committees back to doing the job they're supposed to do. >> mccarthy's problem is he can't get the 2:18 without marjorie taylor greene and paul -- matt gates. and so he will do whatever they asked. ken mccarthy has no ideology. he has no course edible lease. it's very hard to get to 18 that way. it's even more difficult to keep to 18. >> alex, we saw what it was for speaker nancy pelosi to work with really tight margins. mccarthy's is going to be even slimmer. what schiff is teasing out there, at the idea that there are a lot of different ideologies that he's going to keep on board.
9:06 am
this is going to be real juggling act to see for kevin mccarthy as we head into this new divided period of government come january. we've got about six weeks left of a really, really busy activity on capitol hill. we're going to see them try to push through a lot of legislating black six weeks. by the way, we're still waiting to see what the make of the senate is going to be with the georgia runoff. >> hundred percent on that. we're glad you're on the job. thank you, ali vitali. we're gonna bring in peter baker right now. which were very glad to do. msnbc political analyst chief white house correspondent for the new york times and coauthor of the divider. trump in the white house 2017 to 2021. let's get into it as i say i hope you had a good thanksgiving, my friend. the president, speaking of thanksgiving, spending the holiday weekend in nantucket in according to bloomberg family discussions have included whether or not he's going to seek a second term. what do you think ultimately could be the sighting factor. >> i think the family's important to joe biden on this kind of a question. has been multiple times in the past.
9:07 am
whenever he has run or not run. that has been in some ways a family decision in 2004, for instance. he was thinking about running for president. he was meeting with his advisers. -- she writes about who she was against it. she was sunbathing at the time. decided to make her opinion known by going into the house. into the kitchen, finding a sharpie pen and writing the letters and oh on her belly. then walking through the rumor has been was meeting with his advisors. he got the message, he didn't run for president that year. the candidate had a meeting -- he likes to tell, but timmy likes to tell. in 2018, i think it, was she decided he was going to run. they said you need to run against trump. it's important for the country. his -- he is always taking their opinions very seriously. one of the important issues for him to decide on is whether he still has work he can get done. whether he thinks he can win in 2024. what this means for him in terms of age. obviously, he's the first oxygen and we've had in the white house. that's obviously a factor for
9:08 am
the family as well. -- how much do you think the trump factor is weighing on him. he beat him. he's probably thinking the country can suffer through another trump presidency. more heat even get the nomination. how much do you think that plays into it? >> i think it's an important fact for him. i think if he thought another republican running other than trump, it might not be quite as compelling for him to run. he is certainly motivated by keeping trump out of the white house. he has said repeatedly that i'm the only one who's ever actually defeated him. which is true, of course. and therefore, he believes and worries that there isn't any other democrat out there with the same capacity to defend against trump. we don't know if trump's gonna get the nomination at this point. looking less likely than i had before. still the odds favorite at this point. i think that some of the factors and pretty keenly as of joe biden awaits his decision. >> in the meantime, as you will know, democrats preparing to defend the president from the onslaught of investigations
9:09 am
proposed by the upcoming republican house majority. what can you tell us about the so-called war rooms that are getting underway outside the white house? >> there are two different aspects of this situation if you are the white house. you want to look at one -- the legal aspect. it will be handled by the lawyers. what subpoenas do you respond to. how do you respond to them. what testimony do you provide. what testimony do resist if you decide to get the trump route of resisting. congressional inquiries. and there is the public relations aspect of it. there is the instant response aspect of it. how do you put out responses to any claims that are made by republicans that you don't think are fair. you don't think are accurate. obviously hunter biden is a big factor there. republicans have made very clear that they plan to go after the president son. they're accusing him of various conflicts of interest and so forth. the white house is going to be very aggressive i think and pushing back and saying that these allegations are unsubstantiated over their selective right over there going to do to push back.
9:10 am
it's going to be an ugly period going forward, no question about it. but they're not going to see the field, i don't think. >> do you know if hunter biden will have to put together his own legal team. or if he'll have access to that which exists already in the white house. >> he has a legal team already. he's under investigation. there's a real possibility that he could face indictment on a number of charges. we don't know yet. there is still a federal investigation going on. there is indications that it might start to come to some sort of conclusion at some point following this election. he does have a legal team obviously out there. they're interested in his interests. his interest ministers are the same thing as his father's interests. the father wants to defend his son. but the father as the president also has to be wary of what this means in terms of his political situation vis-à-vis the hill. the institution of the office of the presidency. >> let's move to donald trump specifically. who as you know, is facing considerable backlash remington or tuesday at mar-a-lago with white supremacist mix one tase
9:11 am
and yay. formerly known as county west. trump claims he had no idea who fuentes was. is it conceivable, peter, given how you know donald trump and with your writings and following him. is it conceivable that he didn't know anything about one tastes? >> look, is it conceivable? i suppose it is. obviously. but we've seen this line from him before. every time hands of getting support from somebody who is toxic. he says i don't know who that person is. i don't know anything about him. david duke endorsed him, he says i don't know anything about david duke which of course seems hard to fathom since many people in the country know who david duke's. the former klan leader. i think that he often uses that profit station of ignorance to defend meetings or support that he otherwise would be happy to take. he hasn't exactly got out of his way to the announce these people. he in fact usually cultivates their support. then tries to pretend that he doesn't really know what they stand for when they come under
9:12 am
scrutiny. i think that is pretty hard to imagine that a former president could have a staff that would allow somebody like nick fuentes to show up at his dinner even if an announce. even if not specifically invited. without some sort of a vetting process. possibly again. it's not a very organized system sometimes with him. but it does speak to i -- think it speaks to larger issues. >> let me pick up on the word ignorance there. because if it is true, peter, that trump didn't know who fuentes was. then he's admitting someone he didn't know was able to get close access to him and to mar-a-lago. how damning is this admission considering donald trump is currently under investigation for storing classified documents there. it is stunning that a president of the united states is so blindly unaware of who he's associating with. >> it's hard to imagine. no other president i could think of would have dinner with somebody who they did not know who they were. had not been vetted by their staff. even a former president has a process to protect them from
9:13 am
exactly this kind of thing you. wouldn't want to be associated with certain people. therefore, you want to have a staff that would protect you from that. whether he doesn't have a staff that is empowered to do that. whether he doesn't care. whether it's disorganized. we can certainly speculate on that but you're right it does speak to his organizations the services right now. i think that mar-a-lago has always been someone loose in that way. it is a private club as well as the residents. people come in and out of there all the time. who were invited by some of the club members that may not be the kind of people that you would want their. instances in the past where somebody i think charges as being a foreign agent was managed to get access to mar-a-lago. certainly instances where people have wandered on or been brought in by members who would normally not get anywhere near a white house or a president. that's always been a concern even when he was in office. >> peter baker, never can -- i look forward to the next one. thank you so much, my friend. right now, everybody, live look

secretary mike pompeo. i don't see them coming for donald trump this time. won't matter. he can get the smaller donors. i think he got something like an average ticket is $61 in 2016 from the smaller donors. that's his base. they still have a fervent support. it might be slightly smaller. but it's there. they'll write him the checks, unfortunately. that is the case. >> so question here. if he can't use the hundred and 10 million he's already got to run for president. what can he use it for? >> there is advertising. he can support other candidates. obviously, a lot of money was raised to defend the stop the steal sort of situation that this false allegation about the election. the reason why he hasn't prosecuted any lawsuits at all trump himself knows that that is a big lie. he says it repeatedly but he knows down deep at the big lie. just look at his actions.
9:27 am
he's not spending the money that he raised to fight that election fraud. he knows there was no election fraud. he can use it for under candidates. he can use of trump support in his base. he just can't use it for the presidential campaign. which is why he announced so early -- the stuff that he's raising now he can put towards the campaign. and thinking out solely for several reasons. one of which was prosecuted -- so if you could raise some money quickly and to potentially block other candidates or intimidate other potential candidates from joining the race. >> anthony, you know, he's been criticize for fundraising tactics use on the small dollar donors. the ones that were particularly part of about the tight race. you have a georgia. herschel walker's campaign claimed that a least one committee associate with trump camp 90% of the contributions that were solicited exclusively on walker's behalf. so how is that allowed. when people donating say $5 to win their own state.

i think that's another big thing for the former president, if your piece of thing often enough, it will create enough disinformation around the information that a lot of people believe it. that's what he did with the election fraud issue. that's what he's doing with 20s now. they'll be something that he'll be reporting about 3 to 6 months that'll have same sort of facts said and he'll make up the same sort of lies. >> they need to come back in 3 to 6 months and call him out if not before, my friend. certainly. >> hopefully sooner. hopefully before the easter decorations are up. >> count on it. thank you so much, anthony. meantime, brown picking your lunch to work you soviet sheep option but nowadays, we're going to explain ups and downs. and caught on video. a construction worker confronting a motorist who threw litter out his window. e provider if an oral treor you. oral treatments can be taken at home and must be taken within 5 days from when symptoms first appear. if you have symptoms of covid-19,
