the next house week on the line, kevin mccarthy is still trying to lock down the votes he needs from a fractures republican caucus. but he's wasting no time -- he's vowing to strip three top of the democratic -- and threatening to impeach mayorkas if he does not resign. no surprise, democrats disagree with this approach. >> we impeach for people -- to people who incite violent interactions and attempted coup for. we impeach presidents who attempt to extort our allies like ukraine. we don't impeach for policy disagreements. there is an oversight function -- if you do not like with the secretary is doing, you can talk about that. and you can introduce legislation to address it. but jumping to impeachment goes

beyond bullying. it's well beyond constitutional -- and i think it's what we should expect. >> more on my conversation with the illinois congressman later -- meredith, welcome to. you with just a wafer thin majority, kevin mccarthy struggling to secure the votes he needs to be elected speaker. he needs to win over a small block of conservative votes. they already said they will not vote for him under any circumstance. so what are the chances this come down to some sort of a floor fight with house members taking multiple votes for speaker? by the, way something that has not happened in a century? >> kevin mccarthy faces a much more narrow margin to be speaker of the house than he ever anticipated. he needs 218 house republicans -- house members to vote in favor of him becoming speaker. and so far, he's had at least five house republicans who say
10:44 am
that they are not going to support him. and while there is some wiggle room on that 218 numbers, some can vote present -- and just be absent from the chamber during the vote, it's setting up what could be a contentious vote for kevin mccarthy to be speaker. although he won the nomination, he's been trying to win over republicans who might oppose him on the floor. >> whirl, here's something he did last week which was pretty much doubling down on his pledge to remove adam schiff, ilhan omar and eric swalwell from their house committee assignments, and likewise that he would reinstate far-right congresswoman marjorie taylor greene to her post if he becomes speaker. she was stripped of her assignment last year after she made remarks about executing democratic lawmakers. do you put it past him to follow through with this, meredith? do you see any indication he won't cave to the most radical members of his party?

>> mccarthy is really trying to make inroads with people like marjorie taylor greene over the past year. he's held meetings with her, she was present as his candidate for -- america launch. and she sort of emerged as a key ally for him. especially for his fight for speakership. >> but don't you think that's only if she gets her way? i mean we've heard her say quite publicly but if she does not get reinstated, either to the committees that she had previously, or the ones that she now wants, where she thinks she would be really good on those committees, that republicans are not going to like it. and he is not going to like it. >> she basically said something to that effect to the new york times. she said that if mccarthy wants his base to be happy then he should give me power. i think that certainly as part of her calculation here. and for him to. he recognizes the powers --

like marjorie taylor greene -- >> let's get to your most recent article, which detailed donald trump's kind of bizarre relationship with white nationalists and anti-semitic, nick fuentes. who was brought by ye, formally known as kanye west. after coming out of, our trump distanced himself from pointers on social media. what do you know about this meeting that you could tell us and can you make any sense of it after trump just announced candidacy for 2024. this is not a good look. >> no. this whole story came about from a scoop that i had from a mar-a-lago member, he had seen fuentes arrive at trump's club with ye. and it raised questions about whether or not fuentes, a known antisemite, and who hold really ugly and controversial views
10:47 am
actually met with the former president. and there was initially some mixed messages about whether or not that happen -- trump had dinner with fuentes with ye and a former political adviser of trump's who he worked with the 2016, who is now working with ye on his campaign. and while trump has said that he did not know who fuentes was, when he came to join him for dinner, but he was a guest of kanye west. it really raises a lot of questions about some of the guardrails there around trump. why weren't there any questions about who fuentes was? why was he allowed to spend time with the former president and share a meal with him? why was he allowed in the club? it just raises a lot of questions about security and just about, frankly, judgment when it comes to the people that trump spending time with. >> which brings me to the one last question. which, is is there anyone on
10:48 am
trump's team who is capable of preventing stuff like this from happening? >> i think the former president is known for doing things as he wants. and while he's at mar-a-lago, he's meeting with people that are there. he's walking up to the patio. he's talking to members. he's holding court with lots of different people. and so i think, for him, he's used to just having a stream of familiar and unfamiliar faces around him. but in this case, it was somebody with truly reprehensible opinions. someone who is a known antisemite and holocaust denier. and he was able to spend a couple of hours with trump there. >> absolutely extraordinary. thank you for sharing, meredith. yes, there's a new record and black friday online shopping. but there's another number that could be very sobering when the bills come due in january. we'll talk about it next. we'll talk about it next we'll talk about it next

this weekend show the 2022 holiday shopping season is one for the record books already. black friday raking in a record breaking nine billion in online sales alone. mastercard reported a 12% jump in person retail sales on friday, compared to last year. but there could be a downside to all this enthusiasm. here's part of the report from nbc's reporter. >> we have had these experiences, our memory banks need to be -- this is an experience that a lot of us. enjoy >> flashing signs, deals flashing 50, 60, 70% off. catching consumers attention in a near record inflation. >> trying to spend a little money as possible, and get as many gifts as possible. >> in recent months, many shoppers cut down on discretionary purchases as price increases -- adobe reports revenue from buy now pay later installment plans is up 81% this week compared to

job market remain strong. i think people are trying to feel good. remember last year? people did not really go shopping. we had another outburst of covid and people saying, i don't care about the lies, and hear about the crowds, i just want to get out there. >> yeah. here's the thing, though. by now appellate or can really hurt when the bills come through. 81% we saw in emily's report, does that concern? knew that seemed so high. >> yeah. and i think that tells you that we could possibly fall off a cliff when those bills come due next year. it's not only that more people are putting off their payments, but if you are financing by paying an interest rate on that, you are getting crushed. and the credit card interest rates are terrible to start with. i think we started -- there now close to 20% on average. nobody is earning 20% on the money they have in their savings account in the bank. so you are paying a lot of money to put off those

purchases over a period of time. >> so do you see these numbers slowing down? because even though it hasn't happened, yet we still face the threat of a recession. >> i think we are going to have a decent and modest, if you, will increase in holiday sales this year. i don't think is gonna be a huge increase in sales. it's worth keeping in mind that consumers are still in pretty good shape. they paid off a lot of debt during the couple of years during covid when nobody really traveled. we've got a lot of stuff online but we didn't take vacations. and a lot of people got stimulus money that helped them pay off debt. and when you look at things like debt obligation, consumer debt obligations, they are improved. they're better than they were prior to covid. so usually i'm not usually an optimist, alex, but i think consumers are in pretty good shape. and i think there's no reason to think that there's really going to be anything terrible that's going to happen once through the holidays.
