12:00 pm
hi everybody, i'm yasmin vossoughian. if you are just joining us, welcome it is great to see you. if you are sticking with us, thank you. the president is coming off a very strong week and better than expected numbers on the economy and a deal to avert a strike that would have crippled the supply chain. in a moment, i will talk to congressman brandon boyle about the rail strike deal that he voted for. plus, new details on the behind the scenes negotiations over the final january six report. and from kanye west, hate robert sent by the former president and the growing extremism allowed on twitter,
12:01 pm
we are going to take a very special look at how we have gotten here in this country. , plus one man experiment and what once that he has named the most expensive city in the world. >> day 30 on seeing along $100 can last me. in new york city. we saw today for 33, so i made my of. at a lot of nuts for breakfast. kind of delicious. >> i will talk to the man's quest has become a viral sensation. that is later on this hour. we begin today though with what appears to be the strengthening economy on several fronts for president biden as we head towards the holiday season. the job support for the month of november showing over 263,000 jobs added and unemployment remaining low, 3.7%. he also signed legislation yesterday to avoid a rail strike, want to bring in nbc josh flood event to talk more about this. all right josh, talk to me. we got what seems to be a fairly kind of stable economy for the american people. good news out of the holiday
12:02 pm
season. obviously out of christmas. the president having a pretty good week at that. >> yes that's right yasmin after any concerns at the steps of the administration and to try to take inflation under control. what have dampened the jobs market. the jobs report indicated that that labor market is still red hot. the president using that announcement as an occasion that he feels on his administration has taken to try to ease off the gas pedal on the economy to try and bring prices down, gas prices now back towards about three and a half dollars a gallon. without tipping the economy into a recession, of course the flip side of that, job support is that it is probably going to make the federal reserve more likely, not less likely to once again raise interest rates because we are not yet seeing the economy and inflation come down the way they want to. so there are increase concerns
12:03 pm
about what their additional action by the fed could once again create the risk of going a bit too far and pushing the economy towards a recession. of, course the big event this week for the economy in the president was that deal off for the locking signs to avert that real strike which really put president biden into a unusual position as someone who has long prided himself as a champion of unions of paid sick leave. the president acting to over the real strict despite the lack of paid sick leave for profession to not deal because he says of the profound economic implications that a real struggle to fat on the economy, estimating to cross the country about two billion dollars a day. the president saying in this situation that he had to keep the economy on track to avert much more calamitous consequences. >> a judge will have, you i want you to talk a little bit of the change and possibly the primary calendar, that both the president and the dnc have lobbied for. the president saying essentially let start with
12:04 pm
south carolina right? that is more represented at the u.s. population versus iowa or new hampshire for instance. >> exactly and that was a pretty big surprise in the president came out with this letter to the dnc rules committee saying south carolina should go first. the president saying that black voters should be able to shape the primary contest from the very beginning and all throughout the process. he wants to then see nevada and new hampshire share the second date before the contest would go on. two other states like georgia and michigan. battleground states in the presidential election, having it in the past had such a primary role that early on in the process. and on friday, the dnc of voting to move in the direction of adopting that planned by president biden, despite the fact that the state fair is going to lose out on their early status like iowa are very unhappy about that yasmin. >> josh for us as always my friend, thank you. let's bring in congressman brandon boyle, democrat from pennsylvania. . congressman is always great to
12:05 pm
talk on the saturday afternoon. i want to pick up on some of what you austin and that is of course averting this rail strike and assigning by the president for this deal. without of course that six days probation. i have to say just as an outsider looking and right, the fact that railways don't provide paid sick leave to folks that are working for them is astounding right? that seems like a no-brainer here. i know you in fact voted for including the sick days in the house, talk to me about the predicament and watch the democratic party found themselves and with this specifically the biden administration. it seems somewhat of a looser situation. i know biden has been with on the side of the union for a very long time, really throughout the career just as president and vice president. as senator as well. but really had they gone on strike, amidst the holiday season the christmas holiday it would have crippled the economy and thrown backwards and the progress that has been made in
12:06 pm
averting a recession. >> -- that is exactly right and you laid it out quite well. the reality is within the first week, it's estimated that some 765,000 workers would've been immediately laid off. and as you mention the effect on the economy would've been crippling, and as you mention i did vote houston across that vote to include seven days have paid sick leave. unfortunately, not enough senate republicans went along with us and that the not and that being part of the final deal. my view is that we as democrats need to return to what was in the original build back better act. that is having paid sick leave programs for not just rail workers, but all workers in our economy. it's in my, view should be a part of the basic social compact that we make with workers in america. >> tell me this, and new york article laid it out pretty well but i think if you are watching this at home and you don't really know the intricacies of the steel, you don't understand
12:07 pm
why the railways would not necessarily provide paid sick leave. they're willing to provide 24% i believe increase and salary over a certain period of, time 1000 dollar bonus as well. not two, three, four days of paid sick leave? >> it's harder for me to understand and i believe the bonus was actually quite a bit larger, even at $1,000 but the reality is that we felt that we were in a situation in which having a nationwide rail strike would have had devastating for millions of americans. this administration and congress needed to take decisive action but again i don't think that we should leave this paid sick leave issue unresolved right here. i think for rail workers, and for workers beyond just rail workers, we need to guaranteed paid sick leave in this country and we had it in the build back better act. it passed the house of representatives and hopefully we can pick up an extra senate see this upcoming tuesday and will be able to revisit this
12:08 pm
issue in just a few weeks. >> possibly the senate what about the house. and certainly going over to republican control. so one if this is something that we want to get done in the language in and we have a lot to get done in the next two weeks before december 25th. something that you feel like has a possibility of getting done with the republican-led house? it was interesting that even before, as much as i oppose the trump administration in so many ways, if you remember it was the last and administration that even said the right things on paid sick leave. so i wouldn't give up that is a possibility, even under a republican controlled house. but look, over the next 30 days we democrats need to do a lot of the slingback section. in my view, we need to raise the debt ceiling in order to avoid what would be a catastrophic hit to the worldwide economy if republicans refused to act. they are openly saying they won't raise the debt ceiling unless democrats agree to cuts
12:09 pm
to social security and medicare. i will never support. that so raising the debt ceiling, reforming the electoral count act to avoid a repeat of january 6th, paid sick, leave so many things we need to get done. i'm committed to stay there as long as it takes to make sure we get this unstoppable relinquish power i knew not january 3rd. >> you will need more than just you, sir, to be frank. to stay, in order to get this done. but we wish you of course the best of luck during this land accession, as. always congressman brandon boyle, thank. you appreciate it. >> i am committed to it, thank. you >> still ahead, gop extremism and the spotlight this week as unbridled antisemitism went mainstream. thanks in large part to rapper ye and trump. will the party make it as an effort to distance itself from those that are soaking the state? but first. we are are just days away from the georgia runoff election that will test the staying

the georgia senate candidates making their final pitches to voters today as tuesday's runoff looms. election officials say they saw a record breaking a turnout with more than 1.8 million total ballots cast. the latest poll show in warnock slightly ahead, but well within the 3.8 margin of error. joining me now from atlanta, senior national reporter for nbc news cycle kapoor. sahil, good to talk to. you give us a sense of where you think things stand right about now at this race? >> well, yasmin, there are three days to go before the runoff election. at this moment, veterans appear to favor democratic senator raphael warnock for a couple of reasons. the first of he finished about a point ahead of herschel walker in the general election. since, then the polls have

shown him a headband several percentage points. he is vastly outspent herschel walker on the airwaves over here. and walker's strongest argument to voters, particularly independent and center-right voters, went up in smoke and democrats clenched control of the senate in the general election before this runoff was to even happen. there have been 1.8 5 million georgians who have participated in that runoff election so far. that is an extraordinary early vote number. it has broken single day record multiple times. one number jumped off the page at me here. 76,000 georgians who voted early this time around did not even vote in the 2022 midterm elections. so i looked at where these voters who didn't show up in the general election where voting now. some numbers stood out to me. among voters under 30, voters under 30 years of age 16% of them have showed up in early voting to not vote in the general election. hispanics, 8% voting now did not vote in the general action. asian americans, 9.5% voting

12:18 pm
republicans on the issue of abortion is gonna continue to republican of the better arguments. in their, view and the view of antiabortion advocates they need to paint democrats as the real extremist on abortion. that is what herschel walker is trying to do with arguing that warnock supports abortion rights without restrictions, without federal limits. and things like delayed turn for various circumstances where there may be public support for government restrictions. that is the dynamic at this moment, but it is hard to look at that terrain at the moment and not think that democrats have the event on the issue of abortion. >> and for walker to be the one that is trying to shape that argument considering of course the allegations that have been made repeatedly against him throughout this. so i hookup, or as, always thank you for your reporting on this. let's talk soccer. once again, the world cup. heartbreak for team usa. i'm sure many of your. watching it was a win or go home game for the u.s.. they did in fact come up short. eliminated after 31 loss to the late netherlands.
