and lots of questions to answer so let's get started! we are exactly 48 hours away from the georgia runoff that will determine whether senate democrats have some more breathing room for the next two years. as republicans have a threat over herschel walker's chances. we're digging into where the race stands today, as the candidates fly across the state to get out the vote. plus, just when you want donald trump's big lie couldn't get any bigger. now he says the constitution should be suspended. so that he can be named the president. let's talk republicans say silent yet again? as trump continues to view his nonsense? and as the focus begins to shift a 24, a new report says that ron desantis isn't the smooth operator that many people think he is. how his quote, awkwardness, could play into a primary face-off with trump. and later, damage control at buckingham palace, that headlines are already full of william and harry's, rift and

another racism scandal, and now harry and randall's new tell of serious could set off a whole new fire storm. is the uk's -- no king ready to clean up the mess. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> and good morning, i am katie fang. thanks for starting your sunday with us. all eyes are on georgia, with just two days to go before the senate runoff. nearly 2 million georgians voted early, including more than 76,000 who didn't vote at all in the general election. democratic senator raphael warnock, and republican challenger herschel walker, holding events across the states today as they make their closing arguments to the people, nbc news correspondent, vaughn hillyard, has more. >> good morning, with early voting now complete here in the state of georgia, all attention is on this upcoming tuesday,

runoff day, in self. >> the final midterm contests of 2022 is now in its final, weekend and the enthusiasm has not let up. >> warnock. >> herschel! >> after an unprecedented early voting, culminating with a record set on friday. both sides now trying to fire up their voters, and get them to the polls on tuesday. as the university of georgia battled it out on the football, field fans outside the field battled over the senate candidates. >> i've got warnock. >> why? >> because he is a steadfast person. >> herschel. >> why? >> he and i think alike. we've got some of the same beliefs. >> herschel walker was there hoping his status as a football legend for the georgia bulldogs will help propel him to washington. >> we need more -- we don't need politicians who are gonna fight for this country. >> just outside of atlanta, in front of a u-haul. >> i don't want to say to a victory dance before we get into the end zone. >> democratic incumbent senator,

tuesday election officials are expecting the next time around. raphael warnock and a herschel walker will return to -- now we turn to donald trump who is -- a determination for the constitution. so that he can be president again. you can expect any republican to be asked about this, so how will they respond? let's go to msnbc allie raffa. bring us up to speed on what happened here. and have you heard any reaction from republicans so far? >> katie, good morning. this caused quite a stir around democrats, that republicans were noticeably numb after former president trump repeated the baseless claims that the 2020 election was stolen as you said took those claims one step closer. saying in a post on true social yesterday, quote, a massive fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the determination of all, rules

regulations, and articles even those found in the constitution. trump suggesting that he should be reinstated as president, and accusing big tech of working closely with democrats to win the 2020 election. this all came after elon musk, twitters no, owner said he would be able to expose how twitter, ahead of the 2020 election in his words, suppressing free speech, but he is release of the internal emails didn't prove as much, so this caused a lot of reaction not only by the way out was from congressional democrats, yesterday a white house spokesperson reacting in a statement saying, quote, attacking the constitution and all it stands for, is anathema to the soul of the nation, and should be universally condemned, and you should not only love america when un. senators don buyer, and brian shasta run some democrats condemning the rhetoric in these post, buyer saying quote, these words and actions are

unacceptable, they instill hatred and political violence and they are dangerous. katie and another post yesterday, trump actually baited some republican leaders here on capitol hill. into weighing in on this post, so that's definitely something that will be keeping an eye on today. as more reaction flows into these claims by trump yesterday. >> well, we will stay tuned for anybody. it's crept gets there right? anybody's gonna bother to respond to allie raffa this morning. now we turn to some breaking news overseas. iranian state media is reporting that that country's attorney general said in a press conference, that the so-called morality police. has now been disbanded! this comes amidst ongoing protests triggered by the arrest and death of mahsa amini. for allegedly violating the country's strict female dress code. nbc's ralph sanchez has more on this. raf? >> katie, here is what we know.

over the last couple of weeks. iran's infamous morality police have basically disappeared from the streets of tehran, and other major cities. earlier today, the prosecutor general was speaking at a conference and he was asked why have the morality police been shut down? and not only did he not take issue with the premise of that question, but he replied, it was shut down by the same place that it had been launched from in the past. so i'll be, it in a pretty offhand, roundabout sort of way. this is a senior, iranian official appearing to say that the morality police had been shut down. now we should just, be careful about this. the prosecutor general is not in charge of the morality police. and fundamentally, in iran, nothing is final until here from the supreme leader. ayatollah. but this is a big deal. and it does affect their lived

experience of people in iran. they are saying that women can walk around now, in central tehran, without her job. where in the past they would have been expected to be harassed almost immediately by the morality police. they say that that is not happening anymore. the prosecutor general also said that both the judiciary and the parliament are reviewing iran's mandatory hijab love. the law that means that women have to be covered up when they go out in public. he said that that would be a 15-day process. he didn't give any detail. it's possible that they could scale back the laws. it's possible that they could keep him the same. but this does seem to be something of a concession in the face of these massive protests that we have seen over the last two months katie. remember that martha meanie was stopped by the morality police shortly before her death, and they were a real target of the anger that led people out of

the streets in such enormous numbers. katie? >> raf, those massive protests you have spoken about, they have been deadly, is there a sense now with the people, with this new announcement that is just come out. that perhaps those protests are not going to stop. or do you anticipate them to continue until there is an official declaration that the hijab laws have been changed? and that the morality police has officially been disbanded? >> yeah. it's very hard to predict. i suspect people in iran are trying to parse the prosecutor generals words in the same way that we are. they understand better than we do that until you hear from the supreme leader, nothing can be taken to the bank. it is possible that this announcement made in a sort of roundabout way, is the iranian regime's way of making a concession to the protesters, without appearing to be making a concession if that makes sense. in the same way katie, that

we're kind of seeing in china, the chinese government scaling back the zero covid policy to a certain extent, without in any way suggest saying that they are giving into these protests that we have seen over the past couple of weeks. it is worth saying, these protests in iran, sparked by the death of mahsa amini, aimed at the morality police, but they reflect a much broader set of grievances to do with the economy, to do with a lack of opportunity, to do with a general state of oppression in iran. but people will be watching very very closely, not only a figure out what the prosecutor general said. but what it means on the ground. katie? >> raf, it is remarkable. perhaps it is the powerful people at work. raf sanchez, thank you for joining us this morning. now to the world cup, after a thrilling run, the united states men's national soccer team lost to the netherlands in the second round of the tournament. despite star forward christian

republicans are growing increasingly nervous this morning about herschel walker's chances in the georgia senate runoff, now just 48 hours away. ben burnett, a former republican city council member, telling the washington post, quote, herschel walker does not have the capacity to land a closing message. the affiliation and support that he got from donald trump is still a boat anchor around. him these concerns about walker's chances are echoed by other republicans in the state, who point to the record early voting turnout in georgia, which ended on friday. nearly 2 million georgia voted early, and of those, 56% of.

female and 52% are democrats. outpacing republicans by 14 points. keep in mind that early voting is not necessarily representative of the final bout. all of this comes as a new cnn poll shows warnock holding a narrow lead over walker among likely voters. 52 to 48%, within the margin of error. the poll also showing independents breaking in warnock's favor by 25 points. for more on all of, this i'm joined by my friend and the cofounder of black voters matter, let's tasha brown. good morning, let tasha, thank you for joining the show, yet again. your pounding the pavement. you are listening to the voters. you have been talking to the people. are republicans right to be concerned about herschel walker's chances? >> they are absolutely right this time, to be concerned about what is happening. we have been traveling all around the state and as we have been talking to people in the state, there are a number of things that come up. one, it seems like people are

actually really frustrated and upset that the republicans would actually make this point. the truth of the matter, is most people in georgia who do not believe that he lives in georgia. we know even from his tax values that he is actually ban in texas, living in texas, and not a resident of georgia. the second thing is he is just just dishonest and has a lack of integrity which has come up over and over again and voters on the ground here the same thing and the third thing is that the bottom line is he isn't capable of serving in that position. so many people i talked to say this is actually disrespectful and the republicans are really not taking our lives seriously. that you this is a political point just for raw power, it's dead of recognizing that there are real policies of the people of georgia have. >> latosha, i wanted to point to some statistics i think are very interesting. among georgians 30 years, old 50% of earlier that fritters did not turn up for the general election. interestingly, 8.4% of

hispanics and 94% of asian americans who showed up for the runoff did not even vote in the general election. we know this wave talked about this. despite efforts to address the but we've seen, long hours people waiting in dark lines, to exercise the right to vote. do you think these huge voting numbers are indicative that now people understand just how critical this additional senate seat can be? >> absolutely. i can tell, you, katie jayapal traveling and going around talking to voters. what is interesting is i've had young voters who actually protest. they are approaching us and showing me their sticker. look, i voted already. i think there is a sense of urgency, of clarity. just on friday night polling sites close to 7:00, the lines were so long that they were out there until 10:00. on the one, hand i think that is a catch-22. because on the one, hand yes, we are happy to see the. lives on the other, why are we seeing lines of people standing in line until 10:00 at night?

because we need voting rights legislation. folks may recall that after warnock had been elected in this last special election, two years ago, there was a passenger espy 202, a law which has tremendously impacted. many of us call that the blueprint for certain voter suppression. the voter suppression is that people are responding, there is a result of voters. but we are still literally dealing with this variant that was set up by as p2 to around suppression. >> i want to see in this for a second, latosha. i think it is a very important conversation. a lot of the time republicans will, say look at the numbers. look at the numbers of the showing up of people actually voting. look at these unprecedented numbers. and yet, the reality is it is because people are dedicated. because they understand their vote counts and they want is to catch for something. and that is the reason why they are waiting in those long lines. do you feel the sentiment on the streets in georgia, with people who have been showing up early voting, and people who are gonna show up on tuesday for that runoff, they are saying, you can try to keep us

down but we are not gonna do it. we are gonna show up and show you what our vote means. >> that is exactly the spirit of what is happening in georgia. a case in point of people wondering whether the voter suppression bill had an impact in the general election, the last election, what we saw in the general election in 2021 was at 1.2 million people using a mail-in ballot voting process. what we have seen in the midterms this year was 0.2 million. that means 1 million people who had access as a tool for voting, did not use that as a tool this. time even when you're going around, as i've been going around the state, it is almost impossible to see or find 1 million voting box. so i say that there have been a number of barriers, but what i think has happen is there has been a backlash. this is people's response to the state of georgia. you're not gonna take our voice, you are not gonna hand carry handpicked candidates. but you don't even live in our. state and you will not suppress

calling themselves constitutional conservatives. which so-called constitutional conservative is standing up to donald trump this morning and defending the rule of law? as far as we can tell, not a single republican member of congress has said a word. that is some pretty dark foreshadowing of what the 2024 campaign could look like. i'm glad to welcome my sunday morning power political panel to talk about all of this. congress could deliver percent of vote in congress as a republican. now he is an msnbc political analyst, and fernandez analogy is a democratic pollster and msnbc political analyst. gentlemen, thank you for being here this morning. carlos, would love to start with. you republican. republicans are supposed to be constitutional conservatives. crickets coming from republicans right now, what is going on? >> there are a lot of republicans who walk around with a pocket version of the constitution, and bring it out. especially with kids. and this shows how much

republicans have compromised over the last five or six years, when donald trump has become, and what many of them help donald trump become, the head of the republican party. this is a man who never cared about the constitution. by the, way they. new donald trump, when he would meet privately with congressional republicans, i was there. some of these republicans would stand up and say, can you tell us about the constitution and your loyalties? he would, say i love the constitution. all the articles. one, two, three. so it was always a. joe now it is more evident than ever. when republicans are not talking about donald trump, not defending him, that means that they really do not like him. because most of them you don't have the courage to say anything publicly. so, yeah this is a new time, unbelievable. >>, fernand part of the white house's response to trump's includes this. quote you cannot only love america when you win. makes sense, right? it seems like the biden camp is

pretty aggressively pushing back on trump. what he says and does. is it a smart strategy at this? stage is out too early? is it not enough? >> not only is the smartphone g8 is the right strategy. the reason is that congressman cobiella, well said, they republican party still the party of donald trump. donald trump is going to run for president, again as a republican. i think he's going to win a nomination. i don't think anybody is going to really challenge him. and what the biden campaign and everybody else is doing his, saying this is what is at stake in this election. we either have democracy or we have a malignant and offices in his made it clear that he goes to great lengths to talk about how he does not believe in the rule of law. he does now not believe in the constitution. he does not believe in any of the guardrails or institutions that have made this the greatest country on earth for 246 years. that is the choice in 2020, four and biden's right to draw that why it was at the choice to the american people. >> carlos, to finance point about trump being the 2024 gop

nominee, let's talk about ron desantis. last week, the atlantic published a piece about the gop's new golden boy. i will put that. unquote and whether he could stand up to national scrutiny. mark libuse writes about the former governor, quote, people who know him better and i've watched him longer are skeptical of his ability to take on the former president. desantis, they say, is no thoroughbred political athlete. he can be awkward and plotting. let's take a quick look at some of desantis's more awkward moments. >> you do not have to wear those masks. plays. honestly, it's not doing. anything you have to stop with this theater. if you want to, where it fine. but this is ridiculous. >> honestly, this is ben -- excuse, me excuse me. this has been handled ad nauseam. i know you can talk about this with these officials. ask him about it, that is fine. go ahead, man. okay, stop. >> i'm not calling mr. desantis

a racist, i am simply saying the racists believe he is a racist. >> mr. desantis -- >> okay. who can forget this october, when desantis throwing to this group of students inside, you can take off your mask, you can take off your masks. carlos, you are quoted in this piece. you, said the question that comes off, and what you want to have a beer with him, desantis has this robotic quality that he has to shed. i would say this, for a man. some of the other pieces in this quid are worth noting. trump would club desantis like a baby seal and one person said i would rather have my teeth pulled without and aesthetically to be at about with rhonda sanchez. you have to have some magnetism. that is what trump had, as i hate to say it, when he asked that draw with the. people desantis, does he really have it? >> katie, that is an important point. donald trump, for all of his flaws, there are a lot of people out there who find him fun to watch, interesting,

somewhat charismatic. he can be charming, sometimes. it does not excuse all the damage he has done to the country. but for ron desantis, this is an important issue. he really has to find a way to humanize himself, because for a lot of those centrist voters and people who are less politically-charged. that ends up being the push. who am i comfortable with? who would i will come into my life under? who do i want to have a beer. with their candidates like george w. bush who benefited from that question. but ron desantis right now really has this robotic quality to him. he seems to get angry easily. and i think that is something that can hurt him. that is something him and his team will have to work on overtime, if he does want to be that republican golden boy. >> to carlos's point, he has got, buttons desantis, and they are usually pushed. you have donald trump, though. who has not strayed from his base. we just kind of tough to define these, days and yes in some ways is. and all of that extremism is now. mainstream we talk about. this every time we are

altogether. marco taylor greene, kanye west, that is all mainstream. do you foresee, fernand, ron desantis moving farther north direction to court that basically is interested in gop nomination? >> one of the things i have seen about around desantis here living in florida is that he will do everything that he thinks he needs to do to be in power. and gaining power means running to the light out of extreme-ing donald trump to win the nomination, he will do so. but i'm going to say it on this program. i saw the, elsewhere i will say here. again he is not going to run against donald trump. because, in that list of characteristics of a successful president has to have. there was one that you did not say was missing. and that is the ability to handle into whether criticism. ron desantis cannot handle any type of criticism. especially when it is friendly fire coming from fellow republicans. on the debate stage, donald trump chewed him up and spit

those two attorneys again at that courthouse. right, now giving repeat performances before a grand jury. i will repeat the, recollection there was a claim of executive privilege that was. raised they are not back. that's just to the juries that perhaps the executive privilege is now, gone and they have had to answer questions in front of that grand jury? >> i think it does, casey. and last week's, in my judgment, the worst legal week that trump has ever seen. the fact that these two are testifying in front of the grand jury is a big part of that. we do not know if they were testifying exclusively about january six. there are reports that their subpoenas came from one of the doj, lawyers who was reportedly working on that aspect of what is now the special counsel's investigation. they could also have testified about mar-a-lago and documents case, as well. this is a really intriguing part of what is going on here.
