statement reacting to donald trump's suggestion. we suspend the constitution and declare him president yet again. for some republicans, even this is nowhere near where they draw the line. >> whoever the republicans, think they end up falling behind. even if it's donald trump and his call for spent in the constitution, again it's going to be a big field. i think donald trump is going to clear out the field. the remarkable statement. you support a candidate who's going up for suspending the constitution. >> it says a lot of things you have to take into context. >> he was the president of the united states. we are also down to the wire in the last minute campaigning in georgia. we are seeing one candidate a lot more than the other. also this hour, iranian state media question reports morality police has been disbanded. a claim already met with skepticism by one activist inside the country. >> several of us have gained
12:01 pm
confidence we. fearless, we walk around with our head scarves around our necks. you could say there's a lesser chance of someone formerly approaching you to notify you of a pending hijab laws, that doesn't deal that is no threat at all. >> more of my reporting on this story ahead. it sounds like something out of a movie. >> your move, creep. science fiction may soon be reality and san francisco. a voter to allow police to use armed robots an extreme situation. i'm going to talk to one official who thinks this is a dangerous idea. that conversation is coming up as well. first, let's start at the white house. responding to the outlandish call to overturn the 2020 election. reinstate him to power the. the white house responded to the former president's comments saying the comment should be
12:02 pm
universally clamp condemned. joining me now is josh lederman. with more on this. josh, a few, we'll talk us through some of what we've been hearing from the white house and reactions to former president donald trump. >> he has been, this is a white house that has been low for the last two years to weigh in on a day-to-day basis on former president trump's comments and controversial actions. the last thing that they want to do is give more oxygen to offensive things from the former president by giving them the attention of the white house. in this instance, white house officials did feel that this was one of those rare moments where president biden and his team needed to take a stand, needed to go on the record saying that what former president trump has put out there is absolutely not acceptable. that came in a spokesman statement from andrew bates, one of the spokesman for that white house who called the constitution the ultimate monument to americans who have
12:03 pm
given their lives for our freedoms and our rights. bates going on to say that attacking the constitution and all it stands for is anathema to the soul of our nation and should be universally condemned. he says, you cannot only love america when you win. that is a similar mission to what we're hearing from what we have a lot of democratic elected officials. of course, the real question is, how many of the members of former president trump's republican party are also going to condemn his comments. is this the nick fuentes lunch where a lot of republicans say that was a bridge too far. it is this as we're starting to see one of those comments that republicans prefer to simply ignore? as we heard from congressman david joyce, a republican from ohio, played a little bit of an inch or. there he was on abc this morning really trying to dodge having to explicitly condemn president trump for these comments. here's what he had to say. >> first off, he has no ability to suspend the constitution.
12:04 pm
since -- >> he's for it. >> he says a lot of things. that doesn't mean that it's never going to happen. you have to take fact from fantasy. -- we are moving forward. we are going to continue to move forward as republican majority and as a republican conference. >> joy stephanopoulos went on to press congressmen joyous on how they can move forward as he says he wants to do when the punitive leader of their partner and former president is calling for suspending the constitution that all of our government is based on. but have no doubt about it, yasmin every republican elected official as they come back to washington, as they are going through this lame duck session is going to get asked about former president trump's comments whether it's something they can tolerate and whether it disqualifies him from being a presidential candidate going forward. >> the question is, of, course how are they going to answer? josh lederman for us, as, always we thank you. let me bring in msnbc political

contributor and founder of country party matthew dowd. great to see you, matthew. our beautiful christmas tree behind you, as. well i find that ironic, i've got to, say i was on the steps of the capitol on january six. the following day as well. i remember talking to this couple ungenerous evident and the aftermath of the insurrection. th e aftermath of the insurrecthey are both wearing bl has its had 1776. they were there in support of the former president, to overturn the results of the 2020 election based upon what they saw as the tenants of the u.s. constitution. here we have now,, write a former president of the united states saying, all, right list to spend the constitution and reinstate me as the president, for no reason once lever. what do you make of it and the fact that you have now republicans not even stepping out to disavow. mike turner, congressman-elect mike lawler as well, disavowing the firm president.
12:06 pm
a top republican's remaining silent. >> yeah, i think you point out something very good. go on social media and look at all of the supporters of donald trump. most of them have the constitution in the background on one of their pictures are we the people as of phraseology they constantly use. the level of disconnect here, yasmin, is sort of outrageously unbelievable to me in this moment. i mean, i think the appropriate question to ask republicans who seem to sketch this line and refused to condemn the president on this, which you would think be a red line is what is the line? what could the president do our former president to do that would be enough for you to say, no, i'm done with him. it doesn't seem to be an insurrection at the capitol. it doesn't seem to be welcoming antisemitic people and racist. -- we had a clear picture which is always a good thing.
12:07 pm
a clear picture into people's real motivations. what seems to be the real motivation is not preservation of the constitution. it's not defending our democracy. it is the accumulation of power. and that's all you can see and this. and the cumulation of power by thinking they can state link to donald trump, they think they have a greater access to power. the november election showed. otherwise they still seem to be in that mode where anything they do against the president it's going to take away their power. so, the constitution be damned. they don't care, democracy, they can get rid of it as long as we can get the power. >> yeah, power really and, any cause. so, this is kind of a part of this really convoluted timeline. much of which was stemming from something that was happening on, twitter right? with elon musk. it seems like so much estimating that these days. it was release of these twitter files, right? they were related to this
12:08 pm
controversy surrounding a new york post article and hunter biden. who's with the washington post said. by the time the dust settled saturday, even some can's servants were grumbling that it was a dead. musk's twitter files released no smoking gun showing the detective had been to the little democrats. the twitter thread based on communications posted by substack writer mattei be showed the company independently tried to limit the spread of the article without a democratic politicians or fbi exerting control of the social media network. this happens, i believe it was, october 2020 when trump was president, biden was in fact at that point running for office. what do you make of what even musk did? the dissemination and distribution out of so much misinformation. what we have become matthew.
12:09 pm
>> ever since elon musk took over twitter, we've seen it devolve into something that is nothing close to truth and nothing close to unifying in the country as we see it today. what amazes me, elon musk might have spent a little bit more time speeding the first amendment and what it said. is immediate thing, this is a violation of the first amendment, as far as i can, tell no government authority told twitter not to do something. it seems like they're upset. upset that some pornographic revealing picture of hunter biden went revealed in this. i think anybody, no matter if you're red, blue, purple on this thing, are glad that twitter exercise some discretion in this regard. this goes in line with what elon musk tweeted out right before the november election. basically, vote for all republicans in the election. aloha doing whatever he can in the midst of this to try to further these conspiracy theories. it was amazing to me that all
12:10 pm
of these sort of fox news whoever else jumped on this without ever fully understanding that it was basically meaningless. actually, it turned out to be a good thing. >> matthew dowd, thanks for sifting through it with us. we appreciate you. let's switch gears if we can for a moment. we're going to head overseas. let's talk around for a moment. state media, they are questioning this report saying that the morality police had been disbanded. this is coming after earlier reports that the country's attorney general said the controversy over morality police will be quote about quote abolished and that is ongoing nationwide protests. we also know that muhammad jeff are who made the statement is not responsible for overseeing the morality police and his role as attorney general. there's also been no comment or confirmation from iran's leadership -- after the story broke, i spoke to a protester inside of iran
12:11 pm
who disputed the idea that the morality police had been disbanded even before state media did. >> it is a gross must and return to say that the morality police have ceased to exist. the way i see it, the focus has merely shifted. the authorities have been too busy trying to crack down on the protest by making political arrests and watched not so recently this has been their main priority as opposed to taking in women for improper her job. the fact that they aren't currently operating as it doesn't mean that they've been formally abolished. >> the protests would in fact continue even if the regime made small concessions because this is about a much bigger picture. >> i don't think the protests will stop. even if the morality police or some of the passive i.t. is the euphemism fashion disease
12:12 pm
legally and formally abolished, that would not at this way the iranian public from obtaining the higher collective goal that has formed which targets the core and the sense of the dictatorship we've been living under. with all the murder and bloodshed and arrest and that looming danger of execution for those detained, most iranians have grown exponentially angrier and see it as betrayal to go about the usual lives and pretend that nothing's happened. some recent chance we here in protest, we will not forgive, forget or we swear on the blood of our compatriots that we will be standing until the very end. and this is our last message. our goal is the entirety of the regime. >> therein lies the gray of the black and white of so much of the reporting that's been going on. let's bring into this conversation the founder of the iranian diaspora collective. you saw some of the reporting i did yesterday with her when it came to the protests that are happening online, helping
12:13 pm
spread the word of some of the protesters in iran and across the internet. talk to me, this has been seen as a very black and white issue. you saw the headlines splashed across newspapers saying the morality place there -- so much gray and all of this because no laws have changed and is that -- is telling me. even if there are these incremental changes, i, 80 she camacho out without a head scarf on, it doesn't mean they're going to stop. this is just a tip of the iceberg. talk to me. you are muted. >> the red, my apologies, thanks for having me back. important story to cover today. look, it's fair to say that the islamic republic feels like they are on the ropes at this point in time. it's fair to say the diaspora
12:14 pm
of the audience are running the information war. they're looking to fight. back more importantly, they are looking to put out the news of these big general strikes that are happening here. later this week with the iranian people calling for three days a spray strike, that's, worker students, people across medical fields. i think these strikes are one of the greatest threats to the islamic republic. i think this is their attempts to squash these stories. it's unfortunate the story that came out this morning, we are happy to see various different media sources correcting the headlines and pulling down the stories, the story has no credibility, it's of substantiated, it actually causes, it's not helping the protesters on the ground you are calling for, not just reform but regime change. i think also kind of one of the distinctions that has been made to me personally has been, even
12:15 pm
if you don't see them in the streets, because that has been consistently told to me from a lot of people on the ground here, that they are not being taken in as they once were if they're showing hair or showing ankle, right? it is not because the government has stepped up and said okay, we accept that change is needed. it is on the backs of these iranian protesters. there are still making sacrifices and risking their lives every day when they walk out of their homes without a head scarf in spite of all that is being reported and what we are seeing. >> there are over 18,000 political prisoners right now today and iran. we're talking about 450 some of people have been murdered, over 64 of them have been children. if they're going to release all these political prisoners, we will consider that. that will be a statement. if they were going to allow
12:16 pm
families to hold funerals, that would be a statement. but they are not doing that. this is an attempt to squash the news around these general strikes. i think the islamic republic knows that as these strikes grow, these protests grow, it becomes more and more dangerous, their power is dwindling. i think the iranian people are growing encouraged. i think the western audiences are coming to be their partners in terms of communication and how we can support on the other side. but i think this is a big sign that they know that their time is up and they are on borrowed time at this point. >> but how long could that borrowed time last? >> i mean, look, i think you have amazing organizers inside and outside of the country, working across many lines, trying to communicate, how to push these strikes to the next level, how to get more people on the streets. and how to get the western audiences, and importantly, the
12:17 pm
western governments, involved in non military support of regime change. that is what needs to happen here. we are dealing with 18,000 people. the amount of sexual violence and the stories of women being brutally raped, gender based violence against men and women -- children. we are talking about people as young as four, 12, 16. this is the work of the un. this is the work of many nonprofits out there, reporting on this. but we need is accurate reporting. we need the voices of the iranian activists here in the west. the iranian academics. the people who have been working on these issues for the past 20 some odd years. we need them to have the opportunity to start to come forward. and we need the west to really aid them. but if you see these protesters, they are not scared, they are not backing down. and i think you will see big news coming out of iran over the next few days with the strikes. because the strikes are no small thing. and i think the islamic republic's terrified. >> we will keep our eye on it. -- thank you.

deadly harm against the residents of our city. i have to say, i was amazed that this was ever proposed in our city by the mayor and by the police department and even more amazed that the majority of my colleagues voted for this earlier this week. >> so, you talk about the majority of her colleagues. i want to get your response to one of your fellow board members. they said, there's larger questions raised when progressive and progressive policies start looking at the public like their anti police. i think that is bad for progressives. i think it's bad for the sport of supervisors. i think it's bad for democrats nationally. do you think your position of being against these robots's anti police? >> no. i think with all due respect, my colleague was pretty off-base on this one. you know, there was no showing whatsoever and there is a need for police to have robots.
12:45 pm
it's just not there was no showing that it was needed for any law enforcement purpose. for any kind of event anyone could even imagine in san francisco. and at a certain point, we need to be more honest when we are talking about public safety. people have fears and legitimate fears. and they want to be safe. and just offering more and more deadly technology to police departments doesn't automatically make peoples safer. so, i think there's a lot of things we can invest in and san francisco that will make us safer. this is definitely not one of them. i want to highlight, since this, i have heard from thousands of people across san francisco, who are totally opposed to giving the police this kind of technology. and overwhelmingly, all the civil rights crews and residents of the city have been saying that they think it makes no sense to do this and they feel less safe if police have killer robots. >> quickly here.
12:46 pm
i am curious as to what they mean by extreme circumstances -- do they have specifics about that type of statement? and then, who decides to deploy these robots? who subsequently is responsible for them, especially if they do any kind of wrongdoing, i.e., they shoot the wrong person? >> right. the policy was amended so that the chief of police or the assistant chief of police have to sign off on this use of robots as deadly weapons. that did not give me a lot of comfort. when the very assistant chief, who has discretion to use these, was at the hearing last week and was giving examples of when they might need this. and the examples were, number one was, in case there was a suicide bomber. so, somehow he thought it was a good idea to send a robot armed with an explosive to try to subdue a suicide bomber. that makes absolutely no sense to me. and then, the other example was
12:47 pm
a situation like the -- mass shooting. and again, the suggestion that these robots with their explosives would be used to go into a fully occupied hotel and blow the hotel up. i mean, these are the kinds of examples being given by the very people who have the discretion on whether to use this technology. so, i think it would be extremely reckless to give this final approval and i am really hoping that my colleagues change their minds and on tuesday, we have the final vote on this. >> got it. dean preston, thank you. all, right coming up everybody, we will tell you what former trump administration official could potentially take on their former boss in the 2024 presidential election. plus, the length that kevin mccarthy could go to in his quest to win speakership. >> dear laura jesus, i do not often speak with you and ask for things, but now i really must insist that you help me

going to come up with a list of viable alternatives to kevin mccarthy. the interesting thing is that they are looking to members who are leading the house likely zeldin or people who are not actually elected. in fact, the speaker of the house does not need to be an elected member of congress. i don't know if you remember this. but matt gates, one of those hard five nos against kevin mccarthy, he came up with the idea of donald trump for speaker of the house. so, a lot of these seem far fetched. but the -- it is true that you can't really run a campaign against mccarthy without someone else as a viable alternative. but the truth is, if you have five knows, that's enough to take him out on the house floor and he is willing to go there. these are some very interesting dynamics. >> i have my head in my hands because i am just like, oh my gosh.
