. emily salmon nonetheless, we'll see you back here next weekend for more american voices. for now, we handed over to mehdi hasan. , hello mehdi. >> hello, alicia. enjoy the rest of the night. tonight, on the mehdi hasan show, some republicans want trump to denounce ye and white

nationalist nick fuentes. but there's a reason he's still saying silent. i'll explain. -- if you lose an election, or elections, it might just i knew a promotion. and in the final days of the georgia runoff, herschel walker once again proves why he's the most deeply unqualified senate candidate and modern american history. good evening. welcome to the show. ever since self-claimed hitler fan kanye west, aka ye, and holocaust in their nick fuentes, turned up for a pre-thanksgiving dinner for former president donald trump at his mar-a-lago residents, they've been many in the media, many democrats, and belatedly some republicans, urging trump to denounce both ye and nick fuentes. why he hasn't condemned them yet is a near constant ruffling you hear, even from some of his
5:02 pm
most ardent -- kevin mccarthy who are falsely claiming that trump has denounced fuentes when he most certainly has not, despite having had ample time an opportunity to do so. trump has issued three different statements admitting that fuentes attended a dinner with ye, but he hasn't acknowledged that he knows who nick fuentes was or what was set. but personally, i don't see the obsession with wanting trump to denounce them. lightning that trump had met indicted with both gun ye and fuentes. because look, i would you expect donald trump to condemn these two men who traffic in white supremacy and anti-semitic-ism and pro nazi rhetoric, who espouse violent conspiracy theories, when he, donald trump, has spent years trafficking and white supremacy and antisemitism and pro nazi rhetoric, and is the king of conspiracy theories? trump was spouting anti jewish trump's before nick fuentes was
5:03 pm
even born. and you might say, come on, mehdi, but trump said some racist things, but he's not on their level. really? have we had some memory loss? have we forgotten just how extreme donald trump is? tonight, let's run through the record. because it's absolutely vital that we all understand that the man running for the republican presidential nomination in 2024 and most likely to win it, the man who served for four years as americas commanding-in-chief, is certainly not reluctantly breaking bread with the likes of rock ye and fuentes. in fact, he happens to share most of their bigoted views and racist followers. tonight, don't take my word for it. take trump's. for example, a bizarrely masked ye went on infowars this week and said he loved nazi -- to the point that alex jones was telling him to stop. imagine being too extreme for alex jones?
5:04 pm
but ye didn't stop. he praised. -- nazis. so did trump. he did it on camera in the wake of the deadly march on charlottesville in 2019. >> i think there's blame on both sides. you look at both sides, i think there's blame on both sides, and i have no doubt about it, and you don't have doubt about it either. and, and if you reported it accurately, you would say it. [inaudible] -- >> and you have some very damned people in that group. but you also have people that were very fine people. on both sides. >> now. there were not any very fine people on the nazi site. now, ye didn't just praise generic not see, he also specifically singled out it like for price.
5:05 pm
fuentes has played -- praised hitler to. so i don't mind you, but some is trump. on an official visit to europe in 2018, then president said almost word for word what ye sudden infowars last week. it learned a lot of good things, trump told kelly -- frankly, we did win this election. i, and his late wife, even, according to a vanity fair piece in 1998, said trump kept a book of hitler speeches and a cabinet by his bat. something trump has never confirmed nor denied. kanye was eventually suspended from twitter on thursday night by his pile, elon musk, after the rapper showed an image of a star of david with a nazi swastika. despicable and disgusting, right? but have we are forgotten the star of david that trump tweeted during the 2016 presidential candidate next to an image of hillary clinton, piles of cash, the words, most corrupt candidate ever? and we've talked a lot in recent days about those antisemitic tropes that ye and fuentes push about the powerful
5:06 pm
zionist jews who control this country, about jews and money, about divided loyalties. yet, we've heard it all before. i'm embarrassed to say, from a man who was president of our country. and he wants to be president of our country again. this is what donald trump said to a room full of wealthy jewish republicans in 2016. >> you're not gonna support me, even though you know i'm the best thing that could've ever happened to israel, and i'll be that. and i know why you're not gonna support me. you're not gonna support me because i don't want your money. that's why you don't give me money, okay? but that's okay. you want to control your own politician. that's fine. >> in, fact says john r. o'donnell, -- in his 1991 book, trumped, he heard trump say, quote, black guys counting my money? i hate it. the only guys i want counting my money are short guys who wear yarmulkes every day. that's for jews and scientists in israel controlling congress
5:07 pm
and the media, i don't even think i've heard ye go as far as trump did in an interview with israeli journalist -- last year. >> it used to be that israel had absolute power over congress, and today, i think it's the exact opposite. and i think obama and biden did that. yet, in the election, they still get a lot of votes from jewish people. which tells you that the jewish people, and i've said this for a long time, the jewish peace people in the united states either don't like israel or don't care about israel. you look at the new york times, the new york times hates israel. hates them. and the jewish people that run the new york times, i mean -- >> now, have a listen to the vile nick fuentes threaten the jews. >> the jews have better start being nice to people like us. because, what comes out of this
5:08 pm
is gonna be a lot uglier and a lot worse for them than anything that's being set on this show or has been set on this show. >> well, trump would never threaten jews in america. away, he did exactly that less than two months ago, warning american viewers that they better get their act together before it's too late. going beyond antisemitism, you also have the far-right fuentes praising january the 6th and insurrection. he was at the capitol on 16, even though he said he never entered the building. he since said stuff on this. >> i'll reiterate it very strongly once again, just for all of you. january six was awesome. >> of some. yeah. so awesome. again, trump is also said similar things about january the 6th. just thursday, the former president spoke in support of jailed insurrectionists and expressing solidarity with the people he claims were treated unconstitutionally in the past
5:09 pm
years -- promised an amnesty for them, said stuff like this about january the 6th. >> the crowd was unbelievable. i mentioned the word love. 11 the, i've never seen anything like it. >> look, when it comes to far-right rhetoric, yay wears t-shirts saying white lives matter. what does talks about white people being attacked and humiliated in their own country. and in the context of covid in the pandemic, trump too has shamelessly pushed false white supremacist considers even areas. >> just denigrating white people to determine who lives and who dies. if you're white, you don't get the vaccine, or if you're white, you don't get therapeutics. it's unbelievable to think this. >> so, look. i gotta. it's much easier to go after a bigoted black rapper with
5:10 pm
mental health issues and a weird fringe 24-year-old far-right activist. it's much easier to condemn them. but to bring ourselves to admit the performer and possibly next president of the united states is also a far-right extremists dust who has pushed antisemitic tropes as a part of that world, beloved by that world, the world of fascists and not sees, that's much harder to do. so, what's the easy way out? we demand that trump condemn fuentes and yay and disassociate from them, as if he's somehow better than them, less racist, less fascist than them? we pretend to ourselves that a condemnation of those men from trump would mean anything? it's time we're honest with ourselves. and recognize who trump is. what he stands for, and what he said and done. and also remind ourselves that shamefully, he, not ye, not nick fuentes, remains the de facto leader of one of our
5:11 pm
political parties. for more on all this, let's bring in historian ruth ben-ghiat. she's the author of strongmen, mussolini to the president, and publisher of lucid, a new threat to democracy. -- fellow historian and author eric alderman is also with us. -- thank you both for being here. i want to begin by getting both of you to respond to this idea that finn wanting trump to denounce his dinner with fuentes and west, we're making this assumption that he's somehow better than them. ruth, what's your reaction? >> well, this is like the latest installment of the pivot delusion, that somehow trump is going to become normal. and among the gop doing this, this is their very bad faith attempt to pretend that they didn't know that their white nationalist -- and also, that this is very
5:12 pm
important, just a week after they all took over after the inauguration in 2017, they issued a statement for holocaust remembrance day that did not include jews. it left out jews. which was a gift to holocaust deniers. right? and then, when the chief of staff explained this, he refused to, you know, he refused to denounce it, and he said, oh, well everyone's suffering is important. so he was both sides-ing the holocaust. another gift to neo-nazis and holocaust honors. so they have a long history of taking positions that are sympathetic to white nationalists and neo-nazis. >> i'm old enough to remember when -- hitler didn't use chemical weapons against his own people. eric, i think i'm tearing my hair out when i hear people say,
5:13 pm
how can trump -- antisemitic rhetoric, as if he's not said many antisemitic things over the years. >> i see you've been doing that for quite awhile, based on your level of hair there. [laughter] so, listen, the thing about trump's, he's too horrible to be believed. that was a terrific segment you just put together, showing us this long history that trump has of embracing and encouraging violent antisemitism. yet, the mainstream media and also american jewish organizations and pro israel organizations consistently are trying, well, those both sides. you know? this trump, and there is ye, and these horrible antisemitic advertisements, but elon omar once said -- some kid and some college says something that we don't like, they're addicted to this both sides ideology, but also, it's true. people just can't believe how
5:14 pm
awful donald trump's. this is one aspect of it. it's very important aspect, and as a jew, i take it quite seriously. but there's just -- it's been consistent refusal to own up to hugh donald trump really is. he's an antisemite, he's a racist, i could go on for 15 minutes. but particularly now that are facing this violent threat of antisemitism, it's really time to pay attention. >> so on that note, eric, and we don't have 50 minutes, sadly, but let me ask you this. have you been surprised at the speed with which antisemitism has become publicized, mainstream, normalized on the right? seems to be everywhere right now. >> what's so interesting is the marriage between pro israel sentiment and antisemitism. the alt-right is very pro israel, because they like the fact that israel kicks muslim ass. they also like the idea that richard spencer said i'm a zionist, because i won all the jews to go to israel so we have
5:15 pm
a good christian hunt country here. and israeli zionist ideology is consistent with us. netanyahu likes antisemitism because it's consistent with this idea that jews are not safe anywhere but israel. so the right-wing in both israel and the united states are united in either turning a blind eye or promoting antisemitism, whereas american jews, like most diaspora jews, are happy where they live. they want to be loyal to the country they're living in and they want to be jewish. yet, politicians like trump, netanyahu, and others, are trying to make it a false choice. >> yes. although interestingly, even benjamin netanyahu this morning on meet the press couldn't defend donald trump's meeting with fuentes and ye. but that was a bridge too far -- bringing out donald trump's statement over the weekend where he called for the termination of the constitution over his conspiracy theory about election fraud. you and i have talked about trump being an authoritarian
5:16 pm
for many years, but he's gone beyond even what you and i have accused him of. even you and i didn't say trump didn't want to contest -- suspend the constitution. but he's saying it, ruth. >> u.s.. and it's notable of his state of mind that when he is under fire for having dinner with ye and nick fuentes, what else does he do? he does something else that's outrageous. unfortunately, something of the temperament of a strongman like him, the more he feels under pressure from all his civil and criminal investigations, cast out by some of the gop who are criticizing him, the more he's gonna go nuclear and be as extreme as possible. that's what we're seeing with this. but we also -- let's not forget that after the election, his little helper, michael flynn, was trying to have the constitution suspended and have martial law declared so that the election could be
5:17 pm
re-under military auspices. and he's running around doing his reawaken america indoctrination. and when does himself is not just a holocaust denier, but he talks about the need for dictatorship. so these are positions that used to be -- but now they're kind of mainstream. >> very much so. and a good reminder of michael flynn. thank you so much, always a pleasure. eric alderman, please stay with us. we'll be talking later on the show about your new book on israel and america. coming up next, though, the gop really loves -- why is that? that discussion coming up. ssion coming up. teeth sensitivity is so common. it immediately feels like somebody's poking directly on the nerve. i recommend sensodyne. sensodyne toothpaste goes inside the tooth and calms the nerve down. and my patents say: “you know doc, it really works."

he was probably fired. but in the modern republican party, when you lose, it's fine. they like losers now. in fact, after their failure to take the senate in the midterms, the republican national committee set up a group of advisers to work out -- and guess who they put on it? blake masters, the far-right 2020 election denier who lost his own very winnable senate race in arizona to democratic incumbent mark kelly, and lost by five percentage points. come on down, blake, give us your election losing wisdom! then, there's the head of the rnc itself, chief ronna mcdaniel, who's overseen republican failures -- she's a serial loser. and yet, she still running for a fourth term to oversee the party. maybe lee zeldin might challenge her for the chair. but leads austin is a loser to. he just lost his race to the gop governor of new york. and, then of course, we have donald j trump, who despite losing the presidency, house,
5:23 pm
and senate and the space of just two years, is now running again for president. so, what is this once formidable election winning party keep promoting defeated candidates? how did the gop fall in love with losers? join me to discuss, -- brendan burke, who worked for gop -- john boehner and paul ryan, and current, former adviser to republicans on the house oversight committee. thank you both for joining me. brandon, you know i'm not the biggest fan of the republican party, but i've always kind of admired the ruthless way in which it wins elections and the ruthless way in which it gets rid of losing candidates. how did your party become a party that likes loses? is this all just the trump effect? >> it's funny you say that. because actually, i think we're pretty bad at learning lessons, as you said. usually, the conclusion we come to is that we didn't fight hard enough. we weren't ruthless enough. and i've seen us fail so many
5:24 pm
times, and that's how we internalize it. it's important to appreciate that, i think something we're dealing with right now is there was for a long time a group within the republican party led by people like ted cruz that says, forget the, middle play to the base. i have to do is appeal to republicans. we are skeptical, but donald trump prove that you can sort of do that. at least, that's the argument he made in 2016, and a lot of republicans internalize that. we end up going hard at the base ever since. and even though we lost in 2020, we had a better night than expected in the house. so of those people who are still around still internalize that. i don't think anybody will be looking to learn any election since that we need to moderate, not turn off the middle, moderate are -- an abortion. i think this review we're doing is probably only gonna maybe look at some tactical issues, will probably come to the conclusion they weren't fighting hard enough. they weren't defending donald trump in. that's what we've been seeing time and time again. >> so, brandon makes a good point, than in previous --
5:25 pm
haven't learned lessons. there was a time, of course, when -- in 2012 focused on moderating the message -- then donald trump came along, of course. now, you have an rnc autopsy that involves elevating blake masters and kellyanne conway tune advisory board to figure out what went wrong. you can't make this stuff up. >> now, mehdi. this is the topic of -- failure is becoming this familiar refrain for the republican party. back into the 2012 cycle, the right candidates that were extreme that one primaries, like todd aiken, josh mandel. they ended up losing their senate races. mitch mcconnell did not come the majority leader. here we, our ten years later, the republican party just repeated the same cycle, electing unelectable -- went to the fringe, warmly embraced donald trump, and the voters overwhelmingly rejected them. the idea that there is this
5:26 pm
autopsy, that's comical. all they need to do is dust off -- 2012, 2013, that michael steele did, but apparently nobody upper redder internalized in any way, and here we, are having this conversation. -- i'm all for it, mehdi. keep doubling down on failure, keep giving democrats victories, because at some point, you can only lead a horse -- they have no interest in doing so at all. >> -- brandon, last weekend, everyone was wondering whether republicans would condemn trump for dining with a holocaust denier. this weekend, they're wondering whether republicans will condemn him for calling for a termination of the constitution. how sustainable is it for republicans to keep dodging and running away from trump's weekly madness and authoritarianism right up until november 2024? >> we've certainly tried before. i do think -- plenty of republicans who have
5:27 pm
denounced that meeting. maybe not all of them denouncing donald trump. but that's a pretty low bar. i don't think anybody deserves a medal for saying you shouldn't have dinner with a neo-nazi. in fact -- i do you think calling donald trump a loser might be the best thing that we can do to try to move on from him. republicans, while, you know, clearly very willing to go along with a lot, i think getting pretty tired of losing. and i think donald trump for a long time trying to reject this idea that he's a winner, and -- if we have donald trump, we lose. and, that i think, is picking up a little steam. calling him racist i don't think it's gonna turn off republican voters. we've learned. that being outraged i don't think is going to get the job done. but i think painting him as a loser might be enough to get people to open their eyes to other possibilities like a ron desantis. >> oh, so excited.
5:28 pm
but yes, calling donald trump a loser also has the virtue of being true. as for republicans not taking advice -- sometimes i look at my twitter feed and feel like republicans are paying too much attention to what i have to say. just a few days ago, kevin mccarthy tweeted that they, the republican party right controlling the house, will read every single word of the constitution allowed on the first day of the new gop led house. donald trump says this week we should tom and ate the constitution altogether. is irony dead at this point? >> my, gosh you can't make this stuff up. you could write a fictitious show and puts the script, people would say, my god, that would never happen in real life. right? here we, are seeing this play out. -- back when i was a republican serving in the house, how many times you heard republicans call out the obama administration claiming that they were anti-constitution, claiming they were lawless, putting press releases out specifically saying that obama shredded the constitution -- and where these republicans now
5:29 pm
that donald trump just said let's throw the constitution at the window? i think that time and again, republicans kind of benefit from this bar that's been set that they're gonna act badly, so they get away with it. i know one calls the math on that. every single -- should be camping outside, and saying, do you agree with the person that's been leaving your party? the person that you continue to follow off the cliff? do you agree with them that the constitution should be thrown out? because i tell you what, andy. you've noticed that if barack obama, if joe biden said something like that, the right would be having a meltdown right down and talking about impeachment or something. >> well, twitter is accused of violating the first amendment by conservatives. democrats are accused of violating the second amendment. donald trump -- no comment. thank you both for joining me tonight. much appreciated. coming up, how should the u.s. handle its relationship with israel as israel includes some of the worst far-right extremists you can think of and
