from msnbc world headquarters here in new york, welcome everyone to alex witt reports. we begin with breaking news. some new details and the death of a popular american journalist who died at the world cup in qatar, 48-year-old grant wall was covering the argentina, netherlands match last night when he reportedly collapsed in the press box. joining us, now nbc's megan fitzgerald in doha and josh lederman at the white house, as we welcome you both will start with you meghan. what more can you tell us about the circumstances of grant walls death? >> well listen, what we know is that grand to all was not
10:02 am
feeling well in the days and weeks leading up to the tournament. once he got here, he was very vocal about how his health seem to be getting worse. he talked about how working around the clock, covering the world cup really took a toll on him. and fact, he wrote about it on his website. i want to read for you what he said just days ago. he says my body finally broke down on me, three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you. what has been a cold of the last ten days turn into something more severe on the night of the usa, netherlands game. he talked about how from then, it got even worse. he went to the clinic several times, he was diagnosed with bronchitis. so we took this thursday off, he wanted to relax, he cleared his calendar. canceled appointments and meetings. then he was back in action on friday when he went to the argentinian game. he was in the press box with the press staff, until he collapsed. and then of course, we talked a journalist today who say that they called for help you know, first responders come again, giving him cpr to no avail. he was rushed to the hospital
10:03 am
and unfortunately, he passed away. and this is a loss that is being felt all throughout the athletic community. lebron james, somebody that wall reported on when he was in high school never forgetting that moment in that interaction with wall, expressed his condolences today. this is also something that we saw from u.s. soccer's biggest star, megan rapinoe, tyler adams taking to twitter to express their devastation at what a big loss this is. and so right now of course, we are waiting official word, an autopsy in the coming days but at this, point the athletic world is certainly shaken by this loss, alex. >> it is a loss in a shot, thank you very much reagan for that. let's go to josh lederman senate at the white house for us. we keep getting new word from folks in the administration, we know they've been in touch with walls wife, talk to celine gounder. what is the latest on that josh? >> well alex, coincidentally the doctor is someone who is not unfamiliar with this administration. she was actually one of the

medical advisers to the biden transition team on covid-19. and so we are told that after she learned about her husband's death, she reached out to ron claim. the white house chief of staff who is able to quickly connect her what the right folks, both at the national security council and within the state department, the u.s. embassy in doha qatar, who are now able to coordinate as they try to carry out her wishes and the families wishes, which we are working right now to see whether that involves having an autopsy and where? whether they would want that to be in the united states. certainly a u.s. embassy in qatar, a very capable of carrying out this kind of work right now because they are staff to the max right now. in anticipation of having so many american citizens in qatar for the world cup. there are more consular officials there, able to provide these kinds of services and we heard earlier in the

show from the u.s. ambassador, former ambassador to russia, michael mcfaul who describes what the state department does and exactly this kind of circumstance. take a look. >> right now, the state department is assuming, i am doing everything that they can to help the family get their body back. there is you know in the press including this family members, some accusations that maybe he had been killed. those are big accusations. that can only be resolved in

becoming the senate's third independent. senate democratic leader chuck schumer allowing sinema to keep her post on key committees. retaining power on his side of the aisle.
10:08 am
and an evenly split upper chamber, the first time senator leveraged or independents forging deals with republicans to approve his starkville's. voting with democrats 93% of the time but blocking attempts to change senate rules in order to pass voting right legislation and abortion protections with 50 votes instead of 60. something voters back home remember. >> i am actually very glad that she is leaving the democratic party. >> i didn't vote for her but i do like that you know she has a backbone. >> on capitol hill, sinema news a shock but not a surprise. >> she has shown that she has an independent streak and how she operates. >> i don't think it'll greatly change the way that the senate is working right now. >> the white house saying that relationship with sinema will not change. >> we have every reason to expect that we will continue to work with her successfully. >> critics say cinemas decision is purely political and
10:09 am
democrats are who are posing her decision already bowing to challenge her in two years when she is up for reelection. alex? >> okay julia tsirkin, and capitol hill thank you for that. today basketball star brittney griner woke up in the u.s. for the first time in nearly ten months after being released from a russian prison. in exchange for a russian arms dealer. and we see marissa car is outside of brooke army medical center incident o'neill, texas with the latest for us. marie, so welcome welcomed what are you hearing about how brittani is doing today? >> hey alex, let's go with what we know before we get to what we don't know. this was the very first morning that britney griner is waking up on u.s. soil after landing here in san antonio early yesterday morning. before she was brought here to brooke army medical center. you can see her making her way across the tarmac and then we have that footage of her from early yesterday morning where she was landing here for the very first time and by all accounts from what we understand, she is presenting to be physically healthy. but the thing, as we are spoken

to people including jonathan franks who is not only a spokesperson for trevor reed but also he is with that bring our families home campaign, and the lines of hostage families giving us a little bit of insight into what the process looks like once people who have been detained overseas are brought back here. particularly right here, we will bring the things we're looking for in terms of physical health. >> and the clients that of coming back from captivity. they have what i referred to is kettle cloth right? and i use that, that phrase to illustrate to know how cruel this whole situation is right? it is sort of an upper respiratory infection, not otherwise specified. there is a hacking cough, and it takes a minute to kind of recover. i have no idea whether she had that or not but you know you get a head to toe examination. there is a lot of things that in russian prison that you need to be tested for. >> and that is just the
10:11 am
physical aspect there is also the mental health aspect. not only a grueling fuel days for griner as she made her way all across the world but she also has had a grueling past nearly ten months of this. we did not really fully know what she went through inside of that penal colony shortly we will learn more in the coming weeks and months but in terms of what goes on on this campus that is behind me, we understand there's a strict process to try and help people as they reactivating go back to life as a new it before, alex back to you. >> what an ordeal, melissa par think you so much. let's go to washington state where energy providers are on high alert after multiple attacks on the power grid [interpreter] . this week the fbi sent a memo to several northwestern states warning of criminal actors who have been breaking into power plants and damaging critical infrastructure. joining me now is washington city congresswoman jayapal and a member of the judiciary committee and the newly reelected chair of the congressional progressive caucus. welcome my friend, congrats on
10:12 am
that by the way but let's get to this thing because it's extremely concerning. one of the largest energy providers in washington state that being puget sound energy, said two attacks have hit their sights in late november. fortunately there were no major blackouts like the one in north carolina. that one of people without power for days but what have you heard about these attacks in washington and what is worrying you the most? >> well it's always great to be with you and thank you for having me on. this is extremely concerning because there are also it appears at first glance and i know that the fbi and i believe the fbi is investigating this. . i am asking for a classified update on that but what i will say is that it seems that these attacks have similarities with the north carolina attacks and this to me has to be thought of as having the potential at least to be a coordinated attempt to attack our critical
10:13 am
infrastructure by extremists on the right who would like to sow chaos and destroy the ability to function as a country [interpreter] . obviously it has immediate impacts on families across the country where these attacks are successful and thankfully they were not successful in washington state but i think it is of deep concern and i'm looking into it now to see exactly what the fbi knows and what they are investigating and how we ensure that our critical infrastructure in this country is protected from extremists who want to destroy our country and constitution. >> do you think it's a form of domestic terrorism, would you go so far to say that? >> i do believe when you attack critical infrastructure and particularly if it's a coordinated set of attacks that it would fall under that category. if not we have questioned the fbi and department of justice and others during the trump administration for the failure to really follow up on domestic
10:14 am
terrorism, domestic extremism from right-wing groups and i believe that this department of justice is doing a very different job and trying to track down all of those things because i don't think that these are disconnected from the other attempts to propagate the blake wire bring down our government. >> i'm sure you look for it from an update to the fbi soon as possible bullets move to congress with senator kyrsten sinema dropping a bombshell announced that she is changing her party affiliation from democrat to independent. what effect you think this might have on democrats and their agenda, particularly in the senate where democrats had just secured that very narrow majority? >> well i will take her at her word that nothing is going to change. that is the word coming from the senate majority leader as well and as you know alex these next two years is going to be challenging for us because we have lost the house so it is a narrow margin in the house but we don't have the ability to
10:15 am
move some of the things that we otherwise would so for me what is really important is two things. want to look at arizona as a state and how far that state has come in the last ten years as we have expanded the election [interpreter] . groups of that really got into immigrant communities, to young people and built a base in arizona that is extremely progressive and really is about putting everybody's needs forward. and really coming up with solutions for working people and poor people across arizona. that is the first thing that i think is quite stunning. the second is that our job in the minority was not being able to really move big pieces of legislation throughout the house is going to be in opposition party, to be the first line of defense for immigrants, for the extreme, for seniors. the extreme things that the republicans are saying that they want to do. by cutting social security and medicare and also, working with the white house to continue to push forward on both executive
10:16 am
action and finally, building the record, going out every person matters, every place matters is the way i'm thinking about it. going out and telling people what we have done and how if we get to 52 in the senate and take back the house, we can get voting rights done. abortion rights codified, so much more that is important to the american people. >> here is a question, though she did an interview with politico which she maintains that she has a relationship with house majority leader kevin mccarthy saying we serve together for a long time, we are friends. do you see this as a good thing, as the gop prepares to take over the house or doesn't leave you at all and easy given his aggression against democrats and any of their proposals? would you trust kyrsten sinema to lobby mccarthy for democrats agenda? >> i think it is always a good thing to have an open mind to what get done. i will say it depends on which kevin mccarthy we are talking about. are we talking about kevin
10:17 am
mccarthy that balance to the demands with the extremist maga republicans and his party? like marjorie taylor greene and lowering four burt? who you know continue to push forward antisemitic, xenophobic, anti constitutional ideas? or is he actually talking about is this that kevin mccarthy who is going to moderate and understand that we need to get some things done for the american people? i think it'll be the former and i will be very surprise if there is good work to be done with that kevin mccarthy and lets the alex that they get is good to always be open to what might be possible. >> all right, second time on the broadcast about someone approach with a glass half full mentality. we will take it at that. let me talk about next year, i know you are happy about this. congress is welcoming a new batch of progressive representatives after the better than expected midterm for democrats. tives after you recently said to question that this will be the most progressive democratic caucus in decades. so what will that look like though and a
10:18 am
republican-controlled house? how significant is this? the election of and yet having to work with a republican controlled house? >> well first of all, this new group of members is amazing. i just have to start by saying that. 16 of our e team progressive caucus candidates won in seats across the country. all seven of the front line incumbent democrats wide. this is incumbent and incoming democrats won. this has been a very, very, validating election for the ideas that the progressive caucus is moving. we will now be close to 50% of the new democratic caucus within a democratic leader that is a progressive as well. hakeem jeffries and so i think that the moment for us is to continue to push the idea, the truth that

donald trump's 2024 campaign strategy after abc news first reported on social media post from an event at mar-a-lago tuesday night featuring a qanon and pizzagate conspiracy theorist. abc also quoted video showing trump telling the gathering quote, you are incredible people, you are doing unbelievable work and we just appreciate you being here. we hope you will come back. a representative from trump campaign did not respond to abc's request for comment. the event came two weeks after trump had dinner with white supremacist, nick fuentes and yay formally known as kanye west. now re-branding himself as a hitler sympathizer. joining me now, mary trump, donald trump's niece host of the mary trump show podcast and author of the book, too much and never enough. how my family created the world 's most dangerous man.
10:25 am
mary my friend, i'm glad to have you here in part because you also happen to be a psychologist. so is there more tier uncles most recent interaction with fringe elements an extremist? is there anything that can explain the psychology of this? >> what yes alex, thank you for having me on here it's great to be here. everything that donald does is transactional. one of the things we have to realize about him as he sort of a black hole of need. and when he is not getting what he wants from some people, i think in this case the majority of the republicans and congress who have had enough and sort of see him as electoral poison, he will go wherever he needs to in order to get his fix, which is attention and second fancy. so it doesn't matter how extreme whatever works. this has been going on since 2015.
10:26 am
the difference is that he just needs to go farther and farther down the rabbit hole because fewer and fewer people are willing to stand up for him publicly. >> here is another line from the abc report, i understand everything you are saying. this still according to social media post, the event was built as a fund-raiser. this is a part of a documentary on sex trafficking. one of the pillars of the qanon conspiracy theory. here is a question, mary do you believe trump himself as a qanon adherence? does he share his followers beliefs? >> no. he has no set of core beliefs at all. unfortunately though, people like elon musk who now has a lot of power since he took over twitter is also echoing the same kinds of conspiracy theories, which gives them even more cachet in the mind of somebody like donald. he doesn't believe anything except whatever in the moment is best for him.
10:27 am
>> stunning. the access report on the dinner with fuentes and yay, according to a source familiar with the dinner conversations and trump seemed to very taken with fontes. i want to think what i really like this guy, he gets me. trump said he did not even know who fuentes was at the time but are you convinced mary that he has a clear understanding of who these people are and what they represent? >> absolutely, the american people are paying millions of dollars and tax money to make sure that donald and his immediate family have sticker service protection. there is no way guest unvetted, unless i'm missing something. if they are not vetted and we should be getting a refund. donald knows exactly what these people are and as long as they are willing to suck up to him and make him feel good about himself, he will like them. it is literally that simple, astounding as that may seem. >> how much you think this can be chalked up to extremist election himself on to donald trump because they see him as the most powerful person on
10:28 am
earth to ever give them attention? >> yes absolutely, that is one of the biggest problems at being legitimized in a way that they typically haven't been. and i think one of the purposes of liberal democracy is a sort of how they wrote those people off. thanks to donald and the complicity of the entire republican party, these people have been given an enormous platform and they are not going to give it up easily and donald certainly not gonna let them go as long as elective republicans, at least some elected republicans try to distance themselves from him. >> there is a new headline, i read it going into the commercial break and it's from the new york times. it says it all, trump was at a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad three weeks. gop mega donors are jumping off the trump chain and republicans are openly rebelling against his 20 2024 run. let's take a listen together to mitt romney. >> while president trump lost again and i know a lot of people in our party love the
10:29 am
president, former president but he if you will a kiss of death for somebody wants to win a general election. >> and a chance mary that trump season self as a loser right now? >> no. it is impossible for him to do. however i will say that mitt romney, also a one put refer to donald as a rhino. a republican in name only. we cannot let the republican party get away with this. right now, they are turning on him because it seems that donald's electoral poison. however, he is the, he is represented everything that they stand for the last six years. and even if they decide they want somebody else to be there that are bare, we need to hang that donald trump around their necks like an albatross because he is entirely, they are entirely responsible for him. and even if he does not run or if they you know pretend not to support him, they will continue to espouse everything that he has put forward.
10:30 am
there is no daylight between donald trump and this republican party, no matter how hard they try to convince us otherwise. >> before i let you go, i want to ask about something that has garnered headlines a number out there that you are trying to revive that lawsuit that accused donald trump and siblings of cheating you out of your share of the family fortune. you know the case was dismissed last month because of a settlement that was signed in 2001, what can you tell us about these latest legal efforts? >> i cannot say much other than i clearly, we believe that the judge was mistaken in his ruling. and also took almost two years for the ruling to happen and we think that we will just, we look at a better hearing at the public court level. they are just plowing through, the goodness however is that every other lawsuit against donald trump, including one by aging carroll's going forward so regardless of what happens with me personally, it is good
