msnbc headquarters in new york city. an echo chamber of lice. that's how adam kinzinger described the u.s. house. his warning for republicans and the democrats coming days before his january 6th committee drops its final report and the criminal referrals that will come with it. plus if you haven't gotten sick lawsuitly, you're lucky. everything from flu to strep to covid, one doctor says it's like a bomb of viruses going off at once. and finally, civil rights icon john lewis honored this week with a brand new postage staffer. we'll talk to the man who took the portrait and ask about lewis' legacy. we start on capitol hill, where lawmakers are trying to squeeze in major pieces of business in the few days of the congress. that includes passing a massive $1.7 trillion government funding bill. they have less than a week to get that done. for the january 6th committee, it means holding its final public hearing on monday,

potentially with new, never-before seen evidence. it may also be the last time we see adam kinzinger, who is leaving congress next month. not before issuing this stark warning to his republican colleagues. >> the once great party of lincoln, roosevelt and reagan has turned its back on the ideals of liberty and self-governance. instead, it has embraced lies and deceit. the republican party used to believe in a big tent. now we shelter the ignorant, the racist, who only stoke anger and hatred to those who are different than us. unfortunately we live in a world where lies trump truth. where democracy is being challenged by authoritarianism. if we, america's elected leaders, do not search within ourselves for a way out, i fear that this great experiment will fall into the history. >> let's get into it. i want to bring in garrett haake

10:04 am
i do think there are those who agree with adam kinzinger. they are trying to find their option a little more strategically. throwing out the constitution or dinners with antisemimites. whether there is kind of of the more full-throated criticism and try to return to a different set of principles guiding the republican party in the future. we're not there yet. >> there was a lot of reporting in the lead up about democrats essentially funding kind of these far-right maga candidates. to work against them so they could win out. kinzinger also addressed that tactic. let's play a little bit of that and talk on the other side. >> many of you have asked where are all the good republicans. over the past two years, democratic leadership had the opportunity to stand above the

>> there's a major spending bill. they got a week to get this thing as cross the finish line. according to to what you wrote this morning, they have to get it right to get it don't. >> they have to get it together and you're hopeful about getting it done before christmas. garrett and i have been talking about the process pecks of that in recent days. this is going to be a 4,000-page, $1.7 trillion bill that is going to be dropped, let's call it, sunday or monday and voted on in the senate on wednesday. or even earlier. it's a gigantic bill that is going to get bipartisan support. that's the only way to get it through. but remember, the key here is that any single lawmaker from either party could slow down this bill to a crawl. with the government running out of money a week from today, that's going to be an important thing to keep an eye on. also further more, hitch mitch said he will not vote for a bill
10:07 am
it it comes up later than thursday. so there is less than a week to get this done. so yes, it is widely bipartisan. it will fund government through the the end of september 2023. but it's not without a its hiccups and complications as we try to get toward the end of the year. >> i have been watching christmas movies with my kids. is it bad to hope for a christmas miracle? that's all we want at the end of the year. you're also talking about kevin mccarthy, who is trying to get his members to vote against the spending bill. i want you to explain this to us, if you can. vote no, but hope yes. >> yeah, to your earlier point, this is the face of no hope. but the vote no hope yes idea is that kevin mccarthy, despite what he says publicly, does not want to shut down threat in january. that's the other option for them to kick this to the first kwert

of next year when kevin mccarthy is either going to be, in his view, a new speaker. he doesn't want to have to deal with the government shutdown threat on january 15th or february 15th. that would be an unnecessary distraction for him. so while he says that he doesn't want an omnibus, that it's overdone and too much spending, he benefits the most from getting this done. he wouldn't have to deal with government funding until the end of september 2023. >> jake just said it hopefully wanting to be speaker. the problem is he doesn't necessarily have the votes as of yet. we're also learning he delayed all the races for committee leadership spots until after the election in january. it feels like this is a recipe for chaos in the new congress. >> yes, but isn't that the really party they are in complete shambles and they are reeling. trump's candidacy so far for his

third bid at president is flailing. republicans have no idea how to be on message. you have adam kinzinger and liz cheney who have been trying to make sure that the republican party rebuilds. and then you have people like kevin mccarthy, who make sure he's in good graces with him. this is a party that has no idea what direction they are in because their platform is empty and has been. it's been the platform of donald trump since 2016 is and fill nl they realign on their priorities, this is what we're going to see. i don't know what kevin mccarthy's kanss are moving forward, but it's not a strategic move what he's doing right now. he's just setting it up for more chaos. >> speaking of donald trump, talk to me about mobd. what can we expect this this final summary had hearing from the january 6th committee. >> i think it's almost certain that the january 6th committee will refer him to the department of justice for prosecution on which exact charges remains to be seen. but it started out with members

10:21 am
and the fed isn't alone. that's more of the reaction we're seeing today. you have the european central bank and the bank of england that just joined the 50 basis points club. they did the exact same thing. so markets don't love it when rates keep increasing because that makes debt more expensive for companies. we cause them to stop expanding and hiring. >> the thing is we are seeing that inflation was getting a little bit better. earlier it seemed at that point the reaction to that market would be rallying, not what we're seeing now. >> i know. we go to the grocery store and avocado prices are coming down. but seriously, you had inflation that climbed in november. that's a lot. when you think about it compared to last year, that's a big increase year over year. however, it's starting to decelerate. so that maybe a sign for cheering, but that's not how markets reacted. because the big concern is that services are still climbing very high. so things like getting your car repaired orr airline services, the fees are so expensive.
10:22 am
