12:00 pm
if you're joining us welcome. if you are sticking with us, thank you. we appreciate that. by this time tomorrow, we should know the main conclusions of the january 6th committee and what criminal charges they might refer to the doj for former president donald trump and those around him. the committee and last-minute meetings this weekend to hammer out the -- the efforts to subvert the 2020 election. >> i think the evidence is there. the donald trump committed -- viewing it as a former prosecutor, i think there is sufficient evidence to charge the president. >> also this hour, a set of democrats have their own battle plan when it comes to investigations in the next congress. this comes as kevin mccarthy's fight for the speakership appears poised to paralyze republicans at the start of
12:01 pm
their control of the house. elon musk is at it again, suspending another journalist from twitter for murky reasons just today after reinstating others. i will speak to one of those reinstated journalists ahead. all of that plus, you've heard about donald trump's trading cards. our friends at the good liars are out with their own version they are calling on us to trump cards. the former president is not going to like it. they are going to join me later this hour. we want to start with the january 6th committee. we are going to be working overtime today just hours ahead of the final public eating's scheduled to begin at one p am eastern time on monday. we will take an unprecedented look at just what happened in the lead up and after january 6th. i want to bring in scott won with the latest. talk to me. what have we known about these meetings? they are ongoing throughout the whole weekend in preparation for tomorrow.
12:02 pm
what are you finding out? >> you know, he has been, this is crunch time for the january six committee. they have been working for 18 months on this investigation. this is really the culmination of that investigation into the january 6th attack on the capitol. president trump has been making efforts to subvert the 2020 election results. they have two major tasks tomorrow. one is just to adopt or prove the january 6th report is going to be hundreds and hundreds of pages. benny thompson also says that a lot of the evidence, the video evidence, the paper evidence, thousands and thousands of pages will be made available later this week and in the days to follow. that will be significant. it's not like the kennedy documents, which come 60 years after the fact. they are trying to really be
12:03 pm
transparent and show the public everything that they have been working on for these 18 months. the second big thing that we are all watching is, are these criminal referrals specifically related to donald trump? focused on three things -- insurrection, conspiracy, and obstruction of a formal congressional proceeding. given the comments from adam schiff earlier, it sounds like a lot of those committee members to believe that donald trump committed a crime. they are definitely leaning in that direction of referring some of these criminal offenses to the department of justice. >> there has not been a lack of transparency. it has kind of been their superpower in the unveiling of what happened in the lead up to january 6th and after as well. as we are talking about these possible criminal referrals, when it comes to the former president, to the doj, there
12:04 pm
could be more here. i want to read your nbc reporting. trump aside, the committees referrals are expected to identify others including trump loyalists. thompson has said the committee is looking at five or six categories of referrals which might include agencies that license lawyers and the house ethics committee as well. who could be some of these loyalists that we are talking about? >> yasmin, i think you have to look at trump's inner circle and the people who were advising him in the run up to january 6th, trying to sow doubt about the election result, trying to figure out ways to overturn the election and focus on january 6th itself and that pressure campaign of trump's own vice president mike pence and trying to get him to unilaterally overturn the election. those are people who are in his inner circle like mark meadows and john eastman, rudy giuliani. those could be a referrals to
12:05 pm
various bar associations to try to get them to spark. you mentioned congressional referrals, members of congress who were involved in this effort as well chair. german thompson asked spoken specifically about referring some of these gop lawmakers, people like scott perry and others, to the house ethics committee for possible ethics investigations. that is something that -- donald trump is obviously the main focus but we are likely to hear about some other broader attempt to overturn the election. >> i want to touch on what we heard from schumer. he showing a lot of optimism when it comes to the path of republicans going forward, not even cautious, just straight-up optimism, which i found pretty interesting to say the least. here's what he sent. i think there's going to be a whole chunk of republicans in the house and senate who realize that the maga way doesn't work. i hope to work with them to get
12:06 pm
real things done. i said this to mitch mcconnell. i think you can see for themselves that i don't have to do this. tell me more. >> well, of course, you know, you are going to have republicans controlling the house of representatives. well chuck schumer is taking a victory lap here in terms of the accomplishments that they got done in this congress, and it's quite significant, everything from the chips bill to the inflation reduction act infrastructure, they are likely going to be able to pass election reform, a direct response to the january 6th attack, to tack it on to the government funding bill which is moving at the end of the year here, so while chuck schumer has a lot of optimism heading into the next cycle, coming off these big legislative wins, they are going to be up against kevin mccarthy or whoever the speaker might be and the house republicans who are going to be solely focused on investigating the biden administration.
12:07 pm
we will see what happens. clearly, chuck schumer is very pleased with the way things turned out from this latest election. >> kevin mccarthy is also showing optimism, saying the five know kevin's are going to come around. we will have to see how that happens as well. scott won, we thank you. joining me on set, what a pleasure, jamal bowman. good to see you. thank you for joining us. you are shaking your head a lot as i was talking to scott there, specifically about the referrals of these trump loyalists in the house. what do you know? >> it's time to hold trump accountable. it's time to hold my colleagues accountable in the house. they were a part of these conversations. marjorie taylor greene comes to mind. this is -- you know, the committee is going to present evidence and has presented evidence in a transparent and comprehensive way which shows what the american people already knew
12:08 pm
about january 6th. trump incited the insurrection. he tried to stop us from certifying the election results. he did it on social media for several months prior to january 6th. on january 6th, he told them to go to the capitol and fight for your country or you will not have it. i think he's going to -- he tried to be there when the insurrectionists. the secret service turned him away. he needs to be held accountable. members of the house, i can't wait to see the evidence presented for them. we knew at the time that they were my colleagues in the house. they were involved from the republican party. it's time for accountability. it's time to set the record straight. it's time for cost correction for our country. we have to start moving in the right direction. accountability for trump and other members is going to be key. >> we don't know if we're going to see accountability from the department of justice. well we are actually going to
12:09 pm
do with the referrals -- 48 other members of congress are trying to find accountability elsewhere for the former president. that is bringing forth this legislation to bar him from ever holding federal office again. where do you expect this to go? >> we will see. the reason why myself and my colleagues are pushing for this is because this should be common sense. someone who has violated the oath of office, someone who tried to take our country by force, someone who is involved in many other criminal aspects of the presidency like taking records to his home in mar-a-lago et cetera, tara, this is what accountability looks like. you can't run for office if you tried to take over our country. you have to go. >> adam schiff mentioned what they want to do with republican members of the house that need to be held accountable.
12:10 pm
we also heard from kevin mccarthy earlier on in the week as well. let's listen to them and then we will talk. >> we are considering what the appropriate remedy is for members of congress who ignore congressional subpoenas as well as the evidence that was so pertinent to our investigation and why we wanted to bring them in. >> [inaudible] >> not at all. we did nothing wrong. >> what are you expecting coming out of this january 6th report? what do you want to see? >> i'm hoping to see my colleagues in the gop held responsible for anything they had said or done or were involved within the insurrection. you can't ignore subpoenas. you can't dodge your responsibility. this is a reason why the american people continue to not trust what happens in government, they don't trust elected officials who are not
12:11 pm
engaged in the democratic process because of stuff like this. powerful people seem to dodge accountability and the law whereas poor people are always held responsible for it. this is an opportunity to see members of the house if they are -- what does the evidence present? if they are guilty, hold him accountable and let's move forward. >> one final thing as we are talking about january 6th. how do democrats keep over the momentum and the republican held congress, the republican held house? the final report is going to come out. it will be in the hands of the department of justice. everything will essentially stop. the january 6th committee will be resolved at once -- how do you keep up the conversation. how do you keep up the momentum? do you not? do you move forward and other issues? >> it's about how well we did. it's about how you have gotten things done and had control of

12:13 pm
the american teacher act that you are pushing for, advocating for. you are advocating for a minimum salary of $60,000 a year. >> we have to make sure republicans are on the record as either supporting teachers or not supporting teachers. we know democrats by a large support our teachers. we support our kids. we support our public schools. republicans always fight us on this. there are some states where they make much less than that. $60,000 should be the minimum. it needs to be tied to inflation. we have to take care of our teachers to take care of our kids. we are in a crisis of teacher shortages. it is getting worse now.
12:14 pm
this is a way to recruit them back into the classrooms. we need them so desperately. >> what about cost of living adjustment for -- $60,000 is not going to get you very far. it will do quite well. >> exactly. we are happy to have the aft and nea who are endorsers of this bill. the aft and the u f t have been a very strong as a union to make sure teachers earn a prevailing wage. we need to make sure teachers are earning a prevailing wage across the country. that is why we are also pushing back against the right to work nonsense which keeps teachers out of unions. we need to grow unions. we need to make sure teachers are represented. >> jamal bowman, what great and elementary school? >> kindergarten through fourth grade. it was a lot of fun. >> my oldest is a kindergartner. i'm sure was a lot of fun, quote unquote. thank you so much. we appreciate you. still ahead, an in-depth look at the january six committee,
