missile headquarters in new york. welcome to alex witt reports, i'm -- begin with breaking news this hour. multiple sources tell nbc news the authorities are investigating a machete wielding suspect traveled to new york city to target an rv officers. they say the 19-year-old suspect attempted to strike an officer in the head with this machete. before striking to other officers with the weapon. this happened just after 10:00 last night outside of the security screening stone for times square. not far from the new year's eve estimate. these only sees -- joins us now from times square with the latest. how are those officers doing today? >> cory, right now we don't

sources are telling nbc news that the suspect has been identified as 19 year old trevor big heard of wells, maine. and we just learned that the fbi's searching his home at this hour. officials were also saying that he doesn't have a criminal history. but he was known to law enforcement because of social media postings and they are looking into previous postings, possibly jihadist writings online that he posted before he came here to new york city, possibly targeting officers on new year's eve. cory. >> kathy park, following that working news 4's other times square. cathy, thank you. we have more breaking news to bring you. the defense attorney of the suspect arrested in connection with the murders of four university of idaho students, saying if you can be extradited to idaho as early as next week. he was to 20 errol brian cobra and pennsylvania. he now basis charges of four counts of first degree murder, and felony burglary. this is all in connection to the brutal stabbing out for

students in their off campus -- in moscow, idaho, several weeks. ago steve patterson is following the latest on this investigation for us. steve, what we learned from the suspect's attorneys? >> yeah, corey. details in this case all stomach of tween coworker and his defender, public defender that maybe lasted all of an hour. maybe less than that. still, we're learning a whole lot more about the mind state of coburg heading into facing the judicial process. chief among them is the new information that he will be waving an extradition hearing. expected on tuesday. he will not fight which essentially means he should be more swiftly facing a judicial system in idaho. facing that justice. which means that a sealed affidavit for probable clause will be unsealed. the details of which will be sure to the public. we shall learn a whole lot more about his case. the attorney is not chime in speaking to us about what the conversation was with his client.

details but may shed more light on the truth. notified the publicly fbi and state officials went off a little bit earlier. also, what if anything led to its capture? what evidence they have into the suspect have? all is being said right now is that dna evidence has placed a key role from minute one in this case. and that geological evidence related to that dna evidence may apply to further role. we didn't have the exact details of course below this may come out as the affidavit is released and we get more details from that. for now i suspect is in custody and he says he's excited for exoneration. that is a court. >> i find interesting that the chief of police still ask for any tips from the public regarding ryan cobra. ethan anything about him, for any possible details about this motive. i found the very interesting as. we'll do patterson reported for a space on this investigation.

next to you. now to the other top story developing this. our the new year means a new converse as the 118th congress is set to be sworn in on tuesday. capitol hill is bracing for a big fight over who will become speaker in the new republican-led house. with two days to, go republican kevin mccarthy is struggling to secure the voting needs to become the next speaker. now, if the group of hard right into republican lawmakers hold firm, it could be the first time in 100 years that the u.s. house of representatives made more than one round of voting to elect the speaker. meanwhile, head of being sworn into congress, the fall is growing this weekend. for republican george santos, after being caught in a web of lies about his agency and work history. then your congressman elect told the city and state that he apologizes for affinity feels hurt or betrayed. and admitted to embellishing his resume. other, today lawmakers on both sides of the i l gave the reaction on how the house should handle this. >> i think this is troubling in so many ways.

tuesday. tuesday certainly will be a chaotic scene on capitol hill. as you prepare to take part in the 118th congress, he is facing review by prosecutors as the county state and federal levels. we have prosecutors with nasa and the new york state attorney general's office. with the eastern district of new york all looking into his case. nothing is rising to the level of an investigation, but those reviews are learning scrutiny of his finances. how he amassed wealth so suddenly. nothing to prevent taking office in the next couple days. colleagues on both sides of the aisles also for the house ethics committees, their workers to newark suits including the congressman elect calling for -- potential campaign finance fraud as well. glory. >> seems this has become not

just a moral issue with an actual legal issue. you can see it is just naturally iceberg. we've been following very closely since that report from the new york times kennard. we should emphasize that san jose has said he's made mistakes, and admitted to embellishing his resume. nbc's computer rejected two starters for commented has not received any response. has said was given any indication that he may actually resign before congress next year? >> i should know the new york one has reached out to him last year. -- has been buying large too friendly outfits. and he has apologized that has been a condition of traditional -- what he calls the lies and embellishments of his resume. it was just a little bit of fluffing his resume. he tried to flip the script and ask reporters to scrutinize president biden and democrats in turn. so democrats in congress noting the he's not as contrite as we should be, even after this new

those of jewish heritage is families did parish or escape the holocaust, claiming that he should have. but when it comes also to local republican leadership a lot of people are keeping their distance, including nasa county gop chairman -- who says it whatever happens in this term to, san jose this party is not going to support him in 2024. it does seem like an expectation that he could finish up his term, regardless of what investigations might be underway. but certainly that you have a chance to do a congressman's future after that. >> earlier today, richie torres called republican leadership were not doing anything else far, for those being credible for the action. he's in a very unique position because we know that can mccarthy is not facing a very big bid for hundreds. and -- as for the. for how much is this controversy around st. louis impacted the campaign? >> at the very, least it has been a distraction for mccarthy. we have not heard any word from a republican house leadership, on the santos case.

khamenei is out with a new witness transcripts where the penalties on tuesday. the swearing in of the next congress will mark the end of the investigation, just days before the two university of the capitol attack on friday. the 41 interview transcripts come from most of the most high-profile figures from the former president, including rudy giuliani, deputy chief of staff tony ornato, and his son-in-law eric kushner. in an exit interview this morning, outgoing congressman adam kinzinger is one of the two republicans on the committee saying their investigation provided enough evidence in the doj to prosecute donald trump. >> if this is not a crime, i don't know what. is if the president can insight and insurrection and not be held accountable, there is no limit to the president can or can't do. so i do think ultimately when

we get to where we are going to go, and justice role do the right thing. i think you will be charged. i think you should be. >> republican governor asa hutchinson he was considering his own 2024 presidential run said this morning that donald trump's actions should keep him from the white house. >> i don't believe that donald trump should be the next president of the united states. i think he has had his opportunity there. i think january six religious qualifies him for the future. >> joining me, now msnbc legal analyst lee so we're. bentley, so welcome. and thank you for being with us today. when we get to the latest on the new year's -- and a happy new year to. here we have so much to dive right into. like us on this witness transcripts. the committee released 41 interviews. you've been digging into something. does anything stand out here there could also alter understanding what happened on january six? >> there is a number of things

that could alter our understanding of what happened on january six. i should say, when you see americans watching i've been educationally handled 41 of. them here are couple things that stand out to me. one thing that could alter our understanding of something that we don't see. that is unexplained white space and some of these transcripts. anybody who has gone through the transcripts has seen that one members of the staff, for example, are doing some of the questioning or talking about something that could implicate a witness as medical privacy, you can see block boxes that exit words in the transcript. but several of the transcripts also have breaks. weather is just unexplained white spaces that go on for a page and a half or more. it is not, explained for, example by taking a break from the witnesses comfort or asking to go off the record. these are breaks that seen a little bit funky and inexplicable. the question is why. and the committee, at least, shaken from the what we are seeing these unexplained places

are redactions, for taking at texas as opposed to just blank space, because a corporate or is changing over. they might not be able to tell us why. but one possibility is that those white spaces reflect testimony that there is -- on the departments investigation, and before being released the, public spaces were put there so the doj's ongoing investigation would not be compromised. the other thing that stands out to me is the unique heroism of several other members of the white house. we've known for a long time that cassidy hutchinson deserves our gratitude. we not fully understood or appreciated is the role of others and telling the truth about what happened on january 6th. and in the days preceding within the white house itself. people in that category include stephanie grisham, diversity is chief of staff. u.s. press secretary. and most importantly all, alyssa farah griffin, who was a

white house communication director, but prior to that had a long history as a spokesperson in the conservative movement. for mark meadows, jim jordan, it is because of illicit girlfriend that both sarah matthews, that with the press secretary. and cassidy hutchinson. gave the testimony that they gave to the committee. i think our role has been underappreciated until the revelation of these transcripts. >> i am glad you mentioned some of these women. because this next topic here is interesting. it was notable hell little some of the witnesses like john junior in tony ornato could recall about interactions that we had surrounding january six. i believe it was other -- marcus now transcend who testified to the committee that trump lawyers had actually advised that in order to not perjure themselves nelson convoy any information that could be damning to the trump circle. to say that they do not recall and do not remember.

these memory late boxes here seem to be a theme running within the trump circle, you have the speed our strategy. do you think that the doj will have tools that the select committee did not try to pull some of this missing information out? >> absolutely. if somebody called in from the ground during an ask a question but something that they do recall, they can always take the fifth. but the other problem here is that that's the time to the committee conducted some of these interviews, they did not get a full panoply of evidence before. them they were number, witnesses for example, who are just to the committees call all resisted the committee subpoenas to produce evidence. one tool that the department of justice will have that the committee did not using force ability of their subpoenas for documents. and they can show witnesses documents that may not have been available to the committee and ask them for the recollections. the other thing is that one is a crime to lie to congress, and

some of these witnesses were reminded us much when they testified, mine before a grand jury is also a federal crime. and they will know that going in. they will certainly have the option of invoking the fifth. but they may have a lot more tools to refresh their recollection, so to speak. and testifying for grand jury under doj's investigation, and they did before congress. . cory >> there was also much speculation grounding jim thompson's communications with trump's inner circle about overturning the election. particularly because she is the wife of supreme court justice clarence thomas. did her testimony or the gentle testimony released later testimony shed any additional light on whether this is something we worried about? >> it. did also jim thomas in a category of people who, while she recalled more than some of the others, her narrative was not always credible. for example, she said at the outset that she did not touch

the legal limit. that she was just a political activist. but when confronted with specific documents including her own emails and texts, not line became increasingly blurry. as her testimony went on. one of the things we do have to be concerned about is not so much about ginni thomas was affected, as i think the rest of the evidence reveals she was not so much of a street participant in this process. but at the same time her communications with people like -- louis gohmert chief of staff work stance of enough that the dividing line between her so-called political life and her husband's lead a life is not as clear as it should have been. and that should be of concern to us all. >> on that note, some people had hoped the chief justice john roberts final point would focus on performing ethics rules in relation to situation similar to ginni thomas, and her efforts to overturn the election in her association that her husband sits on the

supreme court. when he released, instead, yesterday, focuses on the threat to justice is safety. what else was in his final report that you can tell? and you believe it was a prudent focus for some of the report? >> man of the report is something the chief justice john subtly chief executive officer of the united states judiciary. traditionally it is a fairly dry document that focuses on statistics. bankruptcy filings are of, criminal filings are down. but the introduction here was about threats judicial safety. and used to be the threats to judicial safety were few and far between. but we have seen an uptick in threats to traditional safety from trial of all georgians to the supreme court and back down. so i don't think it was a mistake, necessarily, for the two to focus on that. but i regret very much that the word ethics does not appear anywhere in his report. and certainly the chief has

vulnerability of our nation's power grid after christmas day attacks on four past agents in washington state left thousands in the dark. latest in the rising trend of attacks and vandalism in suspicious activity over the past years of electrical facilities throughout the u.s.. making calls to better protect our nation's power grid. joining me now is clint wants, msnbc national security analyst and author of messing with the enemy. surviving in a social media world of hackers, terrorists, russians and fake news. clint, welcome. in at least 108 human related power grid attacks were recorded during the first eight months of 2022. compare that with 99 in 2021 and 97 in 2020. most of which i do not think the american people have heard

about, just in general. but also how dire of a threat is this to the electrical grid, all this increase in attacks? >> it is interesting the uptick in. but it is not interesting in the sense that the intent has been there for quite sometime. stretches back for at least a decade. there was a serious one in the san jose california area by the decade ago. more importantly, when you look at some of the online discussion, particularly over the last two years, you see this idea of accelerating a war for celebrating -- and the way they seem to do this by taking events like the pandemic or major energy today in the careers off line. and they put those together as the precipitation of a larger civil war that they seek. it's a monastic forms you see the sort of chatter. the question still remains, well it is this related to the

tax racing run the country? or simply acts of local individuals people decided to undertake an attack of their own? i think that is what the fbi and investigators are trying to sort out. >> i think we have noted here that the fbi is looking into some of the attacks. they have been mom about the investigations in general, and january the deregistered wore the domestic extremists have been developing credible, specific plans to attack electricity infrastructure. at least since 2020. and as you mentioned, much for the market sense than. in february, three white supremacist flood guilt pled guilty to -- to attack with rifles. is it your opinion that there is evidence that the domestic extremists would be individual attackers it's not necessarily a coordinated? or is this something that could point to a much more coordinated thing potential even in the future? >> it is really unknown. two ways to think about it. i'm sure this is what the fbi's trying to solve.

is this a coordinated effort by a series of individuals or similar people that believe in the same thing to go after these conversations as part of a larger movement? the one that comes to mind is a group known as the boogaloo. they were predominant around 2020, particular the idea of starting some sort of a civil war. separately, though, we did see born tehran international terrorism is that people don't need to coordinate. if the ideas out there on the internet, they can move to the idea and undertake an attack on their own. this is known as -- meaning that the objective or and point is really well-known but the attacker is not. which makes it very difficult for law enforcement and critical infrastructure to defend against, because you don't know where the next attack will come from. you don't know the type of attack. it is difficult when you have all these power stations around the country, to defend all of them equally and such a way that you can ensure that the power does not go off whatsoever. widely not have the resources to do the present. >> you've done seconds left at the final second is of so
