9:04 pm
appreciate what these players sacrifice when they're playing this level football game to perform for us. >> yeah, it is an amazing thing i think a lot of people again they notice intuitively there is a kind of moral resonance that goes on in the heads of a lot of sports fans certainly around football which we know intuitively can really do long term damage to the people who play it and i'm not playing it but i watch tray. something that we all kind of grapple with and we sort of put off to the side and we watch our games and we root for teams and then all of a sudden something like this happens and you're right stephanie, if that is sort of wake up everyone to the sort of deep moral imperative of what this is my sense is that that there is a process that you sort of focus
9:05 pm
on for this if you're a few days and eventually there's a resilience to the sort of nfl life that the normalcy sort of a bounce and i think as we saw tonight the league's first impulse was let's continue the game i think obviously better heads prevailed for both teams and both coaches and i think we saw the right decision was made the decision was the game is postponed. obviously everyone was focused on tamar hamlin tonight and what a situation is and i think hopefully we can just hope for the best here. >> how tricky is this for the nfl? obviously this man's life this team and their ability to get their head around this is the most important thing but we only have a week left in the season and nfl's big big business if nothing else? we are heading to the playoffs they didn't cancel it immediately. >> yeah, i mean look at the nfl
9:06 pm
the early indications here is they're not very good in these situations. they are a really good marketing organization, they are good promotional organization, but when life untruths, or cultural realities and truth, or health and safety and things that, that roger goodall, the commissioner, has done a really -- he does a really clumsy job, and i think this was kind of evidence tonight. at the same time, it's a really tough call. as you, mentioned it's very big business. cancel an nfl game, especially primetime monday night football, against two very good teams, is a big deal, and playoff start in two weeks, this is a big weekend coming up now. how do you proceed? i think obviously, they're probably talking about right now, trying to figure out how you sort of get these games in, beginning with this one. whether you can try to get this played at all.
9:07 pm
but i don't think there's anything the league can sort of do right, now except wait and see what the condition is, for a good outcome of it's possible, and i obviously would repel this decision forward. >> for business decision, i think it's a really tricky proposition, i don't typically handle these things very well, hate to say. >> despite all that money that they're all getting paid, right organization. mark, stay with, us i want to bring into this conversation, sean gregory, his times senior sports correspondent, sean, even covering sports for years. no one has ever seen anything like this, a player on the field, receiving cpr. what went through your mind? >> we've heard a lot tonight, and so true, it's very surreal, trying to think back. an nfl game, a sporting event where we saw cpr, or heard
9:08 pm
about cpr being applied. -- so it was kind of a national, this is monday night football. and he mentioned several times in the past hour, stephanie, about how there is such anticipation for this game there was, so close to the -- two high powered teams, to upstart teams, two super bowl contenders. and that all went away, as we hoped in played, but tomorrow having lane is gonna be okay, hopefully he'll be okay. it hasn't happened, in any sporting event, i'm trying to think of comparisons, and the only one that really came to mind, was a nascar race when
9:09 pm
dale earnhardt got into a crash after the daytona 500, that race was over, and in the news came, hopefully we're gonna get better news here. but it really hasn't happened in the nfl. >> is the game getting more dangerous? more violent? over the weekend, at ohio state georgia game, we saw some serious hits in that game. >> yeah, they had a fellas grapple with this issue for years, safety, -- to try to pick play around the edges, but the bottom line is, it's about violence, sport and players are getting bigger and stronger, and so you're gonna keep seeing these kind of,, hopefully not an outcome like this. this is always been the nightmare scenario, where if someone's life is in the balance.
9:10 pm
utility usually get some, sign a thumbs up as a player gets carted away. we didn't see that here which is kind of opening, the news gets good overnights. >> but it's not a nightmare, it's reality, a young man from western pennsylvania, living's dream, now in a hospital in critical condition. mark, you write about this all the time. players are getting bigger, players getting stronger, is this the coming of more dangerous and violent game. >> i mean, yes it is, the nfl will say left and right, that the game has never been safer, as the soundbite they always go to. and then once handles say this, put out press releases saying, hey look we've done this in this, we have this initiative, and yet they've moved their scheduled to 17 games. they've expanded to 17, games up from 16 just two years ago, which is up from 14 about 30 years ago. they keep basically trying to print more money. this is what this is about
9:11 pm
nobody's supposed to go through the 16 or 17 times a year. and what other what happened tonight is related all tonight, is who knows, but there's a lot of greed at work here, has a lot of billionaire greed at work here. and i hate to soapbox around business about something like this, but the idea that player safety is paramount to everyone at the nfl, it is just not backed up by the impulses you see tonight, which was initially, it looks, like to continue the game, into the coaches sort of stepped in, player stepped in. but also the fact that they're expanding the schedules, but they're just sort of putting these bodies, that belong to people other than those off in the press box, and those up in the owners box, at great risk. so, you know, there is this moral reckoning, but i think probably we're not gonna see anytime soon, but it's there. i think something like this will hasten, hopefully, and
9:12 pm
discussion of what happened here. >> you can always spend more money, you can create more human life. out to bring the timeline back up on the screen, can he do that? i want our audience to understand, this sean, because i want you to come out and how look longer took the call the game. 8:55 is when we saw that injury occur. i-90 seen, that's when the game was temporarily suspended, -- and it took until 10:01, for the game to be officially postponed. shawn, monday night football is the most watched football of the week, every week every year. was that delay, officially postponing this game, really about the big business of the nfl? >> because a human watching i would say, let's call this game
9:13 pm
tonight, immediately. >> and to be fair, they may, in a half hour looks like a long time. but this is never happened before, and to mark's point, there seemed to be an inclination to continue the game, perhaps. and was the coaches and players all got together, and then communication with the lead, it became pretty obvious that, as somebody's life is perhaps in the balance, there is just no way football is going to be played. so i never got the sense of the kind of dragged too long. i know what i think, one thing that's come out of, this is the scene kind of the best of sports tonight. in an awful situation, the medical personnel responding so quickly. perhaps even as players are light, perhaps, hopefully. the players themselves, taking control of the game in st., we can't play the coach is stepping up in time lead, this
9:14 pm
game cannot happen right now, and then you see the fans you see the bangles fans in the bills fans kind of sitting a vigil outside the hospital. it's not a little hesitant to criticize tonight, and hopefully this -- we can only hope is a happy ending here, i think we saw some of the best aspects of sports night, on all sides here. >> shawn brings out some very good points, and while those minutes fell like lifetime, danielle has never dealt like something like this before, and it is extraordinary. >> right, the nfl, to be fair,, has dealt with this before, a long time ago, but a player from the detroit lions did die on the field, in 1971, they play the rest of the game, is very different circumstance, and a very different time, and one of the great state in the league's history, it was after the president, president kennedy was assassinated, then
9:15 pm
commissioner pete rochelle said, that the league would continue put on games the following weekend. so there is that but i agree i think humanity was certainly on display in many different ways and an hour half hour is not a long time in the scheme of things. i ultimately think they got the call right, which is to end the game into postponement indefinitely. and focused things on the conditions of the player but look these are realities that it is heartening to see humanity sort of prevail among the players and coaches and fans and so forth think it's a good thing but ultimately you can't lose sight of the fact that the business proposition the very bottom line proposition as sort of drives the league is very much in the background and these considerations are already being discussed i'm sure the highest levels, in moments like this one a decision about how to proceed is made. >> gentlemen, stay, close i
9:16 pm
want to bring in our dear friend, a veteran journalist, msnbc contributor mike barnacle. mike, you watch what happened on the field, tonight even watching our program for the last hour, what are your thoughts on what we've seen. >> well first of, all i think the assessment, the medical assessment by dr. vin gupta, tim as, ago it was absolutely on the mark. as to probably most likely would happen, this moment of cardiac arrest. a player, life and death on the 40 yard, line with both teams gathered around, the bills in the bangles. i think the players on both teams, then saw something very perhaps and never, ever seen before in their life. they spent one of their own, players, receiving both cpr. there's been different related,
9:17 pm
now is the center for players on both sides. and that's what you, saw the emotional reaction, -- to form a human shield, in front of the young man on the field, to her fear of his privacy being invaded, so you saw that. and then to what mark was just referencing, the decision not to flag. i expect when this string of the story is polled, you'll find that the players on both sides, both the bangles and play -- their decision was relayed to headquarters in new york. i think that was the biggest impetus for doing the common sense thing, and canceling the rest of this game. >> in this discussion, even talking about the violence of pro football, was really gay
9:18 pm
william patriots play, or go, seemingly received a hit from an oakland raiders player, jack tatum. he spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair, he was permanently, crippled and i'll be remembered once a, year the will emotion occasion it to light stadium. it's a violent game, we live in a violent country. but the violence is for its, is ephemeral, comes and goes, violence in high school hockey games, how school football games, as violence and rugby and soccer, we've all seen it, you get a new word to it. and as leibovitz pointed out, sedan, think i, god is unbelievable. do i have anything on? this was the point spread in this game. you can't get back to the game fast enough. they will see the highest rating of any sport played on television. it's an american game, and as part of america.
9:19 pm
and you know, it is what it is. this is a terrible night. this was a shocking night. nothing for viewers anywhere watching this game, what's shocking the see the shock in the face of the national football league players, they consider what might be happening on that field life or death in the 40 yard line. that's bigger than a football game that's bigger than a sport. it's a life in the balance it was incredible and it remains incredible. >> the nfl is saying we will not be getting any more updates tonight. michael you've written about and followed american sports for years and years but you also very much love the humanity of it. were you reminded tonight but these young men sacrifice, really as gladiators almost every time they enter that arena, and for so many of them come from humble beginnings, all that they sacrificed to
9:20 pm
improve the condition in life. >> many of them a lot of them, maybe even a majority. they fast-track them and a fairly early age. whether in high school or college is trying to get them to submit to their college, come to, michigan come to notre dame, come to southern california, someone loved going to the pros. but when they're seniors and they play football their dream for life is to play in the national football league. they get paid big money to play in the national football league and a lot of them never make it. very few considering the many who do play football. when they get there, they've gotten to where they want to be, but the average lifespan of a
9:21 pm
pro football player, the average career span is maybe 3 to 4 years. tom brady is an anomaly, quarterbacks are an anomaly in the national football league, there are specific rules designed to protect the football quarterback, there's no specific rules to to defend the defensive tackle, their careers are shown by injury, a lot of brain damage. the national football league it's time eyesores marketing, as leibovitz points out in his book. high marks for marketing, but look at the submission that a major region over the brain damage lawsuit. it was meager, meager, it was a pittance compared to what the national football league has in terms of wealth. so there's a lot of stories involved, this will all be regurgitated because of this tragedy that happened tonight, and hopefully it's not the ultimate tragedy, hopefully the young man does recover, and does come back.
9:22 pm
>> mark leber which is still with us marked you want to comment on this? >> yeah, it's 100 percent correct. first of all, the average nfl career berries from year to year, usually around 2 to 3 years. this is joked that at the nfl stands for not for long, because a macro play for long. and tom brady's who's 45 years old he's been lead for 25 years, it's on that, that has said that football playing football every sunday, is like pena car crash every sunday, it's not feels. this is a guy who's still doing, it is actually pretty well protected, he doesn't get hit a lot, but he feels it, he's seen how difficult it is to recover from. oh yeah, no, i think the other part of this, is when players do, recover or many years after they recover when you see them in their 50s or 60s, they are
9:23 pm
quite often just shells of people of comparable age, because of the tool that the game has taken on, them untold numbers of concussions, numbers of story surgeries that we don't know, about. -- the song pastor playing career, so the toll is, real and again it's not on all of us sitting and watching at home, eating nachos, it's the human being, and make their own decisions, when i did a big game i talked to a lot of them, i would always ask them at the end, after their go through, the difficulty of what their lives had become when they retire, i'd always say was it worth it. and almost to a person that say yes i do it all again. so again there are leaps of faith going on, and every step in every level of this, but it doesn't make it any easier when something so extreme, and something so here if you click this happens, for a solid watch
9:24 pm
in realtime. >> the living their american dream, but tonight we're seen the nightmare. michael, you mentioned before, we're not reporting it, he said he bet you're bottom dollar that is these place. seize coaches said -- seeing their faces. seeing them, how hard will it be for the exam and to get back on the field, whether it's later this week. they both got games on sunday. >> i would think would be impossible. they're all human beings, and there is a brotherhood in the league a lot of players know each other from threatening us each other in college, a lot of players work out with one another during the winter, during the off-season, a lot of players because a free agency play from team to team to team. across their careers. they have intertwined on a personal level, with a lot of other personal players. but seems they were just referencing, the bangles

with, nfl they've shared some of what -- conference call starting, now jeff miller, who is on the nfl communications team starts to call by saying there will be no update on tamar hamlin's medical condition tonight, nor any update on when the game will be resumed. troy vincent, who's the ebp of football operations said, coaches and players were traumatized by what they saw on the field, and suddenly their head coach for the players discussed resuming tonight's game, troye went on to say, he's never seen anything like it. the nfl said that the bills are going to return to buffalo this evening, but some of the players have chosen to stay in cincinnati, i want to stay close to the medical center, they want to stay close to del mar, as jay said earlier, the bills family obviously from

smaller city, a true brotherhood. many of those players want to be close to him. i want to share one other thing that we heard from the call, nfl executive, vp of football operations, so i just mention, troy vincent, said on the call that there is never a plan to let players have five minutes to warm up and continue the game. so where there are some rumors out there that the nfl had said, after he'd collapsed, the players could take a few minutes, warm up, and then play again. troy vincent has dismissed that will, rumor and said it was never been discussed. dr. gupta, thank you for coming back, joining us. you are with us in the last, hour i want to do a reset for our audience. america watched that 24-year-old young man after hit that appeared to be clean hit then collapsed on the fields and we all witnessed something we've never seen on an athletic field, who see subpoena and
9:33 pm
allusion. explain to us the best of your knowledge, -- stephanie, thank you for having me back, and also watching, this is traumatic. this isn't out of hospital cardiac arrest, as we call, it the hardest dog, beating cardiac arrest. different from in the hospital cardiac arrest, for all my fellow health care providers, someone that is witnesses from a personal standpoint, it's traumatic in hospital. so this is a national trauma. and of course, our prayers and our earnest wishes over the hamlin family, to make sure there's a speedy recovery. i'll say, here for everyone wondering what happened, it appears that mr. hamlin, by all accounts is a very, healthy professional athlete, 24-year-old young man, ended up
9:34 pm
giving a violent but otherwise pretty routine tackle, where the impact was focused on his left chest right where his heart is. you know the difference between writing your left chest based on your sternum. so we're focused on the left basically from them when the video can show us. he got, out which is a good sign, and you can back them, and apparently lost his pulse. so we had cardiac arrest, that's why cpr is implemented immediately. and the questions that still remain outstanding,. and we get to the hospital of course in a second, is when exactly, in addition to cpr, could mr. hamlin potentially receive an electrical shock, why did he need an electrical shock? it appears that what caused all this, is something called
9:35 pm
commodio cortis. for those who actually want to google this, that's how you spell it. once you have that force focus on the left side of the chest, focused on the heart, the electrical activity in the heart gets disturbed. our electrical -- heart is basically electric acquired to beat after beat,, you don't normally think about. that might shock to the left, chest disrupted that, electrical activity. it's basically like a fuse when, off in some ways, and that's why normal electrical, activity a normal heartbeat -- effectively the heart was not doing anything meaningful, no blood was going to the brain, or the kidneys, or the lungs, much less the heart. and, so this is a life-threatening situation. the only treatment for that, stephanie, in addition to good rapid cpr, is we need to shock that patient as quickly as
9:36 pm
possible. so that's why i'm assuming, a shock happened. we don't know how quickly it happened, and to our earlier conversation, quickness how matters. for every minute but there is a day late, after that initial arrest the chances of survival increased by about seven to 10% so immediate to fibrillation, that's what this is called, given electrical shot after the heart stops, and setting up this particular scenario. immediate defibrillation is vital, in addition to give, cpr but the shock is key. for all of us watching out there you know somebody fainting, -- you lost, suppose you want to start that immediate cpr, and you get the different later if you need it. so the message for all of us moving forward in the next 24, ours is how quickly is the shock, received and what is the status now, was interacting with the medical staff before
9:37 pm
you had a medical ventilator, we don't know yet. he might have just been placed in a medically induced coma,. but the fact of the medical team is not updating all of us now, is not unexpected at all, the university of cincinnati critical care and part mint. truly phenomenal, level one trauma center, couldn't be in better, hands the fact that they're not updating us, doesn't really mean much, hopefully we don't have an eventful night, hopefully as, monitoring providing support of testing. >> he briefly stood up before he collapsed, is that typical with these type of cardiac events? >> it can, be what it tells, us stephanie, and especially you and i am listening to earlier conversations. violent hits in football, we think about the head, when you think about concussions. maybe some sort of catastrophic
9:38 pm
bleed. if it was that type of consideration, here a brain injury, we would expect him to pop right back up. even if all very briefly. so the fact that he popped right back up suggested that there is something cardiac, happening not neurological. so, yes you can have that moment here, where everything seems normal, the heart might have an extra normal one or two beads, before they let you go activity actually truly becomes of normal. >> so all of those young players who've standing on that field, watch this young man get shocked. what could that be like, was the trauma associated with some like this, these are all players who put themselves out there, and put their lives at risk. >> presumably at some point loaves on the field, -- they certainly watch him get cpr,.
9:39 pm
what i'll say is, stephanie, when medical students in the hospital, -- it is a traumatic episode. this is something, traumatic, lead to de-briefs, emotional, debris's where you say it's met mentally traumatic, so i can't imagine what it would be like for these young man on the field, who aren't in the medical profession. >> so blessed to have this medical team on the sidelines. quickly, before we go, we obviously talk all the time about football and concussions, but injuries like, this should be would be focused on the, more where they just so rare,
9:40 pm
there were blast that they almost never happened, and now is a time when we're living this nightmare. >> stephanie, this happened on sports biggest stage, it's a national audience, so it's hard to say, how often does this really happen, i don't know if we have great data on that, so it however said this episode is if there is one and we're all hoping for a rapid recovery from mr. hamlin if there's one silver lining to question this should be a learning that football is more violent than just injuries to the head. so, yes absolutely, we should be evaluating, targeting below that. thoracic cavity, to the chest, let's go quickly, just to emphasize something we talked about earlier, got a hard at cpr dot o r g, or go to a red
