there is a sureness and a certainty to the mass and particularly in what is for many people, of course, a sad moment, but in the catholic faith, this is also a celebration because the belief is that this represents the resurrection of the soul and eternal life with god for pope emeritus benedict. i want to bring in molly hunter who was there. it really is an extraordinary sight whether you're there in person, whether you're watching it on television, we know that thousands and thousands of people lined up and waited in the predawn hours to participate in this and it seemed as if throughout the service, which, again, was led by the current pope francis, there was a quietness, a respectfulness and i'm sure a sense of mourning as we see right now, pope francis as the pallbearers bring the

casket and he gives his blessing. pope francis perhaps saying his final good-byes to the man who preceded him in the office that serves 1.2 billion catholics. the wheelchair is being brought in for pope francis. thank you, pope benedict from some germans in the crowd who have the flags and then also santo subito, which is something we saw and very much upon the death of pope john paul ii and they wanted him to be named a saint very quickly, which he was. and now that sign as well for

pope benedict. >> we heard those chants from the crowds during the funeral of pope john now st. paul ii. this has been such a respectful crowd, very prayerful and when you think you have all those thousands of people gathered in one space and to see them there and then they applauded both when the coffin was brought in to begin the mass and now as it goes through as you said the door of death to be buried in the grottoes underneath st. peter's basilica but i was struck by listening to the readings how all the readings were about giving yourself over to god and the joy that comes from that and i think that really was the life of pope benedict. he was a man who truly gave himself over to god. >> the beginning and the end of the homily that was quoting the gospel of luke, father, into

your hands i commend my spirit. >> yeah, i also thought that there was a particularly beautiful moment in the homily where the pope was addressing the words of st. gregory the great but could easily have been a description of pope benedict. he had the awareness of a shepherd that he could not bear alone what, in fact, he could never bear alone and, therefore, he knew how to entrust himself in prayer and care to the people that have been entrusted to him. i think that is a perfectly sums up of the humility of this man and the care with which he made this decision. >> danke benedict, the pope, george, he will be laid to rest in a symbolically powerful place in the grottoes. talk a little about that. what is going to be happening that we will not see and your impressions of this mass of christian burial.

>> chris, i was struck by amidst the obvious grandeur, the noble simplicity of it. this was a much shorter papal funeral mass than that for john paul ii. it reflected, i think, the simplicity of the faith of pope benedict. cardinal meissner, the late archbishop of cologne once said joseph ratzinger had the piety of a child making his or her first holy communion and i think that noble simplicity was obvious in this ceremony today. pope emeritus benedict will be buried in the vatican grottoes in the spot where his predecessor john paul ii was first buried before being moved upstairs in the basilica after

his canonization. so this man who gave 25 years of his life to the service of john paul ii three times requesting to be allowed to retire as prefect of the congregation for the doctrine of the faith, three times being asked by john paul ii to stay with him and three times accepting that burden, that responsibility will now be buried where his great predecessor once rested for several years. it's a beautiful gesture. >> it was a beautiful service and it does raise the question as many have asked and just have a minute left about what is the future of the papacy in terms of retirement? we have a pope now who has his own ailments, what is the word from the vatican and what have we heard from pope francis himself whether this will be one historic moment or the beginning

of something different. >> as recently as a month ago in an interview pope francis revealed that he has written a letter of resignation. he has signed it should he become incapacitated. so he has always said from the first interview that he gave that benedict opened the door to that but that is all he has said. i think in the days to come we will see new rules, if you will, for the office of air retired pope, what will he wear? will he wear white? what will he be called? >> i want to thank all of our guests, i'm chris jansing and want to thank you for joining our special coverage of the funeral of pope benedict. we have our news coverage coming up right after this break.
