these agencies and look at how they've been weapon eyes to go against the people they are supposed to represent. we are going to do that. >> investigating the investigators. house republicans are getting ready to take a sledgehammer to yet another american institution, with the false narrative that the doj is unfairly targeting the right. also, republicans learned nothing from the election. the new house majority is actively working to take away what's left of women's reproductive rights. voting on two abortion related measures today. hard to believe it, but george santos lied about being a star volleyball player he lied about attending the college. kevin mccarthy decided today to reward congressman catch me if you can instead. we begin with a noteworthy example of how the fbi can go
4:02 pm
wrong. back in the 1960s, dr. martin luther king jr. criticized the fbi. for failing to enforce civil rights. particularly in the south. hoover denounced the critique by calling king the most notorious liar in the country. king's public criticism made him a target for hoover who singled out the civil rights leader for surveillance and defamation. under the guise of national security, the fbi began investigating king for alleged communist crimes. wiretapping. they failed to find communist ties and looked instead into kings private life. in 1964, congress passed the civil rights act. later that year, king would be awarded the nobel peace prize for his campaign against racism.
4:03 pm
hoover stepped up his malicious efforts, all of which culminated in a now infamous letter and blackmail package. here is the letter, typewritten, anonymous. the word evil is used six times, calling the recipient king a colossal fraud. it repeatedly condemned king, saying to him, you are done and there is only one thing left for you to do. the letter read. you know what it is. you have 34 days. some pollard's 2020 documentary explores how king and others interpreted that letter. >> they put this package together and sent it off saying, king, you know what you have to do, and giving him a deadline by which he needs to do it. many people have interpreted that to be, you need to kill yourself and this is one of the ways that king and his confidants who saw this letter interpreted it. >> years later, a senate committee would confirm his suspicion that the fbi

attempted to blackmail him, presumably to commit suicide. which brings us to the here and now. the new house republican majority is now co-opting a real piece of history. that the fbi is capable of unleashing harassment campaigns as they did to reverend dr. martin luther king. but now, this harassment is happening to them. the fbi is rating trumps mar-a- lago to confiscate classified documents. ditto on the doj for investigating trump for inciting an insurrection in which five people died. political weaponization of the justice department, they say. who tried to use the doj to overturn the 2020 election? and of course, it doesn't count when it's trump. which is why house republicans are now obsessed with investigating the investigators. voting to establish a new

special panel to probe what republicans call the weaponization of the federal government. so what does that mean exactly? right, republicans using their mustache twirling powers to try to end probes into conservatives. which is why congressman adam schiff called this out for what it really is. >> what it's really intended to do is to undermine the legitimate investigation of president trump's incitement of a violent attack on this building. on this capital. on this citadel of democracy. an investigation that implicates some of the very members of this body who want to sit on that committee. >> this isn't about weaponization. it's not political whining. this is nowhere near what really happened in the civil rights movement in the 60s when baseless red dating devastated organizations. when federal investigators accused an entire movement of

being communist and tried to blackmail a nobel prize-winning icon to end his life. yet, still, today's republicans are claiming victimhood status that isn't really for them to undercut legitimate probes of a former president who stole classified documents and incited a mob to overthrow the government. it's the aggressors playing the victim, otherwise known as gas lighting. join me now as we talk with nbc contributor, jason johnson and former republican congressman of florida. thank you for being here. there is a lot of whining and what i would consider co-opting of real history on the part of republicans. your thoughts? >> this is not new to me. if i were to count the number of white conservatives and republicans that quote martin
4:07 pm
luther king, you would think there were no black people in the crowd. every person is apparently an african-american studies major with the way they quote dr. martin luther king and talk about him and his life and things like that. this is all nonsense, right? this committee is a bad idea. the idea of the weaponization of government. republicans have consistently shown that they have no shame and weaponization only matters when the government is investigating their own bad behavior. it's not just the committee is bad. it's not just that it's going to be led by jim jordan. i'm sorry. in the name of the ohio state wrestling team, i cannot fathom the idea of anyone thinking jim jordan should be in charge of an investigation. but beyond that, it's the idea that they will have access to all sorts of classified investigation that they could be funneling to trump and insurrectionist. it's not just a sham but a way to get them information away
4:08 pm
from the house intelligence committee which they will use to further the long-term coup. that is the real danger of this. to up the legacy of martin luther king. >> let's play jim jordan. you are right. this is somebody who was allegedly implicated in crimes that were committed against children. he is someone who participated in the insurrection. just want to set that up for you. >> they went after us on the floor and said this is political and we are going to fight it tooth and nail. why? we are protecting the first amendment and democrats. i thought you embraced the constitution like we all do and love the first amendment and the rights we enjoy. that's what this is about and we are going to do everything we can to protect americans first amendment rights. >> congressman rudy, i'm going to bring you in here. i thought you all embraced -- like we all do.
4:09 pm
this is someone who participated in donald trump's attempts to overthrow the government. this is the party that is telling people what they can and cannot read and saying they are not to talk about people's existence. protect the american citizens first amendment liberties. this is literally about protecting donald trump and maybe about protecting jim jordan and other members of congress and receiving information. demanding information from the doj that might be investigating them. your thoughts? >> there's a couple things. like you said, first of all, the republicans are in great peril to minimize january 6th and the impact of it. i don't think any rational human being can argue that trump had a role. maybe not up to the level of a legal role, but it wouldn't have happened had there never been a trump. none of this would ever have happened had there not been a trump. it may not be a proximate cause but it is a serious problem. i think republicans are in a bit of peril by not embracing it as adam did. i think the republicans made a

big mistake by not getting on that committee when senator pelosi offered them some seats. on the other hand, -- always perfect. the fbi has got its spots. a couple years ago -- a little personal, a little political. director mccain said that and push them back. nobody is perfect. we are all human. but at the end of the day, that is the department of justice that we have. that is the protector of our laws. i think merrick garland -- more than anybody else. i don't think attacking him personally is going to get republicans anywhere. >> let me ask you this. one of the big risks here is that the people on this committee, including jim jordan, could begin to demand -- there is no separation of powers question here -- to
4:11 pm
demand that the department turn over information that could involve investigation of members of congress in order to protect himself. this feels like the cover-up after the crime. >> i think there is a principal out there that the justice department or the fcc has to turn over documents in an open investigation. i think they could probably stop that in court. >> let me ask you this question. >> jason knows better than me. >> listen, i can't be -- because i'm petty. if he sent me a subpoena, i might say, when you answer yours, i'll answer that one. so, in your mind, from this political standpoint, how should democrats respond to this? >> leave them on red. i wouldn't respond to any of this. it's nonsense. jeffries may decide he wants to put certain people on the committee but you may notice that mccarthy has already said he won't give a spot to rapkin. he's afraid of omar. the whole thing is trying to
4:12 pm
make a cool kids table with a bunch of nerds. that's what they are trying to do. they want to make this committee a cool table but you're not going to get national attention. you're not going to get 24 hours of coverage. you know why? because you're not investigating anything that matters. i promise you. whether it somebody in the midwest, new york city, the south, or geek squad at best buy, nobody cares about hunter biden's laptop. that's the kind of thing they are going to investigate on a regular basis. congress should ignore the committee and focus on making sure they cannot get information because as we know, these things tend to magically show up in hands and it might show up in a back clause of mar- a-lago that were not aware of. >> let me bring up what -- said last night. i thought it was an honest admission that it was about revenge. >> when we told democrat leadership when they went down
4:13 pm
this pathway of removing numbers from committee is basically saying, we should not do that because if it's good for the goose is good for the gander. we were clear in the 117th congress. we should not go down the pathway of saying that member said this, they've got to be kicked off the committee. what we are doing is, so you did it? this is what happens. this is the response. let's get back to the status quo of, you pick your committee people and we'll pick hours and we will go from there. >> it's obviously not that. this is a party congressman. this is going after the irs and has been mad about the irs since the obama era because they've got a flood of people creating 501(c)(3)'s and they dared to investigate it. they investigated progressive ones too but that doesn't matter. then you've got the chairman of the house oversight committee calling ukraine an adversary.
4:14 pm
the only reason you would possibly do that is because ukraine defied a trump. it feels like the whole party is still trying to serve two purposes. vengeance and trump. i wonder what you make about that as a former member of congress. >> there is a fair bit of trump stuff in there and it sounds like a little bit -- which is not good to use as a senior legislator. they should be more politic about it. i'm not sure i agree with what he said, but they show how corrupt our system was over the last 30 or 40 years. there was an analogy to -- which i worked on, with banker. does jordan want to kill off the doj or something? i don't know. the church commission had democrats and republicans. baker had a full seat at the table. i was sitting right there with him, and it was fair on both sides. the american people got
4:15 pm
to hear both sides. if they want to do that kind of process, the democrats have got to get on that committee. >> if they wanted to have a genuine commission to look at the fbi and go from the router to the tutor, all the way back, there are a lot of black lives matter organizations that felt they were being watched. and even more organizations that felt they were being watched. you would get democrats on there in a heartbeat. a lot of people have been saying, yeah, there's issues. jason johnson and former congressman rooney, more proof that the nerd table is the cool kids table. thank you all very much. next on the reidout, republicans pay a heavy political price in the midterm for attacking women's reproductive rights. but are they backing off? not a chance. a chance. enough was enough. i talked to an asthma specialist and found out my severe asthma is driven by eosinophils, a type of asthma nucala can help control. now, fewer asthma attacks and less oral steroids that's my nunormal with nucala.

alabama's attorney general under fire today after saying that women could face prosecution for taking abortion pills. while the states abortion bill explicitly says that those who receive the procedure cannot be held liable, marshall said yesterday that anyone who uses pills to induce an abortion can still face consequences under the states chemical endangerment of a child bill. which was meant to protect children from at-home meth labs.
4:21 pm
the fda said last week that retail pharmacies can distribute the medication in states where it's legal. antiabortion advocates are organizing pickets outside of cvs and walgreens in early february in at least eight cities across the country, aiming to bring the same signs and intense confrontations to drugstore parking lots that groups have long used to deter visits to abortion clinics. republicans doing it in the house as well, passing a bill today that would protect babies born alive after late term abortion, which medically is not a thing. it comes despite an election, just a few months ago, where protecting a woman's right to choose proved to be a massive voting issue. yet, republicans have learned nothing. even republican nancy mace is calling them out. >> this is probably not the way to start off the week.
4:22 pm
we should be looking at measures picking sure everyone when has access to birth control. if you really want to get serious about this issue and reduce unwanted pregnancies, i've got entire counties that don't have a single ob/gyn doctor. those are the issues we need to be talking about. >> joining us now is -- what you make of the fact that even though abortion tanked republicans opportunity to take back the senate, narrowed their house majority to a pittance, they are still doing it? >> it is hard to believe that they don't see the political landscape out there and aren't interested in protecting their members. good for nancy mace for saying what she said. the reality is, she is going to win re-elections. her state in south carolina just ruled that abortion is codified in their constitution. the right to abortion. i think that republicans are on

their extremist, maga, republican agenda of criminalizing abortion without any exceptions, and they don't want to get off at that point. if they keep doing that, they will lose women and families across this country, because abortion is necessary. economically it's necessary. bodily autonomy and freedom is a big issue for families across this country. the they are going to lose but that is their extremist agenda and they are committed to pursuing it. >> let's hear about this born alive bill. >> the babies born alive outside the womb, in some states, they are allowing that baby to be killed and calling it abortion. it's murder, yet it is legal in some states. >> this is one of the most ridiculous things i've ever

heard. back in the day, liz cheney used to say this. this idea that immigrants are for infanticide meaning, you have a baby and then they just kill it, that is infanticide and is a crime, or eight months and people say i don't want to be pregnant no more. i'm going to have an abortion. that's ridiculous. let me read you a story from the new york times. this is what they are talking about. this is dr. jim gunther, who told the story of her water breaking at 22 weeks. just at the point where viability is barely possible. the survival rate for triplets was less than 1%. as parents, we decided that invasive procedures like intravenous line and a breathing tube in a one pound baby would be pointless medical care and so, as we planned, aiden died. that is the reality for so many parents. some have known for weeks or months that there would be no life after birth. with that knowledge -- both are
4:25 pm
brave decisions. the idea that any woman is going to attempt an abortion at the time they are going to give birth is ridiculous. if you are giving birth at 22 weeks, you don't want to do that. this is a wanted child and you have to make decisions if the child is either already dead or going to die. they are classifying that as abortion, congresswoman. >> that's right. it is really outrageous, because, newsflash, killing a baby is already illegal. it is murder. what they are doing is penalizing healthcare providers and criminalizing healthcare providers for providing necessary information. to me, my baby was born at 26 1/2 weeks. one pound, 14 answers ounces. this big. doctors told me my child was not going to survive and that i wasn't going to survive. probably. i decided to go ahead with it
4:26 pm
and i was lucky. i have a beautiful 26-year-old now. this is actually hurting our healthcare providers and families who are trying to make difficult decisions in the moment and it's trying to penalize healthcare providers who just are providing the most important healthcare advice to their patients. it's really outrageous and dangerous and absolutely ludicrous. i would be laughing except it's dangerous. they are trying to penalize women who are trying to get pills. as you said. in alabama. this is an extremist agenda that is going to lose them the election, but it's also going to create a lot of fear and hurt a lot of women across this country. put particularly for black, brown, and indigenous women who are already strained in terms of getting the healthcare services they need. >> i worry about this. i've had three of these lovely
4:27 pm
babies and in my first pregnancy, i thought we were going into very early labor at a point where it wouldn't be nonviable. doctors have to make a decision. they put some women on complete bed rest because if you tried to give birth at that point, 20 weeks, that baby won't make it. they do all of these life- saving things to try to stop that. i worry that now, in states like alabama and louisiana, if doctors are confronted with a woman who is bleeding at 22 weeks, somebody who seems to be -- the baby inside has passed away and isn't going to make it -- they won't be able to treat them. they will be too afraid to do anything because these men who don't even know women's anatomy are calling all of that abortion and trying to put women in jail and their doctors in jail. >> that's exactly right. this is why it comes down to freedom. something republicans say they stand for. this is freedom for us to be able to take care of our own bodies and get the healthcare we need. that is why, over two thirds or almost two thirds of the country actually want to have these protections in place.
4:28 pm
so, i think that i have heard directly from women and from providers that this is going to hurt the practice of healthcare. this is going to hurt families from making good decisions and honestly, it could hurt the health of women who are in these situations because, i know, in my case, when i started leaking at 22 weeks, my doctor said we've got to keep the baby in. we will try to keep you exactly right. i was on bed rest. and we didn't know exactly what was going to happen. that is a decision that nobody should be involved in except me and my doctor and my loved ones. that's it. i think this is really an outrageous attempt to try to somehow classify democrats in these terrible ways. but it's going to have the result of really hurting women across the country.
4:29 pm
and healthcare providers who are just going to be scared to do what they are supposed to do. >> or leave it or leave these states. you will start to see doctors and nurses not want to practice in the states because they are too afraid. this is big government. >> they are already leaving. >> they are leaving. they are going to leave. congresswoman pramila jayapal, thank you. >> everyone relies on their resume, right? no, they don't. more on republicans after this. they legitimately don't. in three seconds, fifteen couples will share a perfect moment. is that? oh wow! but we got to sell our houses! well, almost perfect. my place is too small; your place is too far.

>> the truth of the matter is just as has happened in the past, because of democratic changes, adjustments have been made to make sure social security is there for the next generation. biden has put forward and many others have, the proposal to raise the cap on the income social security right now. the cap is about $160,000. for people who earn much more than that, and there are a lot of folks that do, they don't pay taxes on most of their income, unlike most americans. that is a commonsense proposal that most republican support. >> explained so people understand that. you pay that tax on the first $160,000 of your income, even if you make $1 billion. >> what of the other issues is that, i just want to put up a little chart. i love charts and graphs, i'm honored. it shows what has to be spent by the federal government. there is the kind of spending
4:51 pm
that is discretionary, meaning defense spending, which is a big chunk of that. there are social programs, food stamps, things like that. that is social security and medicare. they're not discretionary. long the government can say we feel broken rock on a pay it. they have to pay. it >> that's right. this is something that, as you know, it's vital for most americans. it turns out that something like half of americans rely on social security for half of their income. and so we are talking about maybe 20 million americans who go into poverty if social security weren't there for them. that's why it's so vital for us that we keep our promise. because it's a mandatory spending program, we have to, under the law. >> chile tried this. under pinochet, they tried it. and even he said that's going to fire. it was a disaster. what wound up happening is that if you took that social security trust fund, handed it to wall street, and they love to get their hot little hands on it, and they gambled it in the stock market and lost at it,
4:52 pm
they would still get there. fees >> look at last year. the s&p was down 20%. so just look at if we had had rare a vested that social security trust fund in the stock market in any given year and you experience that type of loss, what you would see is what you saw in the united kingdom in the attempted to do something similar, which is bailouts. the government and start bailing out these funds. we go into further debt. and we are worse off than we are right now. >> so this is my challenge. the republicans are not having a real debate on this. some of them are saying lindsey graham said we should raise the retirement age to 77, 99, or whatever, you want people to privatized it. the two things they don't want to talk about, right now they're about to workers for every eight retirees. it used to be 3 to 1. three people actively working to pay for one retiree. not 2 to 1. immigration will fix that. a little tax in greece and immigration would fix it. >> you hit the nail on the head. i am i'm illegal immigrant myself. i came here when i was 12

months old from india. we are down by millions of immigrants right now. these are younger workers, people who pay into the systems, supporter social safety net. the other thing that we have to do, joy, is today only one third of americans can afford a college degree, for the two thirds of americans that cannot we have to upscale the earning potential. >> that's right. >> you upscale they're earning potential, guess what? they're able to pay more taxes, earn more money themselves, and support the social safety net. so that's another key reform that we need. >> one other thing i would love for the democrats to do a stop calling it entitlements. this is something people paid into. >> it's their money. >> it's their money that they're getting back. >> it would be like me saying the money in your wallet, that's an entitlement. >> thank, you congressman. i love having this congressman was somebody who cares about the issue. congressman raja krishnamoorthi, thank you so much. coming, up you think the climate crisis is your grandkids problem? there are at least 18 grieving

of it. from flooding and unrelenting wind in southern california to snowstorms in the sierra mountains. at least 18 people have died from the storms. that's more than the loss of life from wildfires over the past two years. sinkholes are swallowing cars hole or. mudslides pose a constant threat. and authorities are in their third day of searching for a five year old boy who was swept away when the car he and his mother were in was overrun by floodwaters. the mother was rescued, but they could not reach the child. this is far from over. forecasters expect at least three more atmospheric rivers to drench the state over the next eight days. the devastation of the storms is directly linked to climate change. as the washington post notes, rising global temperatures are making the region drier, hotter, and more fire prone, but they also increase the likelihood of sudden severe rainfall, and

that the state isn't ready for. every one degree celsius raise in temperature allows air to hold 7% more moisture. the storms are likely to cast california billion dollars. this comes as we learned this week that extreme weather cost the u.s. 165 billion dollars in 2022. there has been a whole slew of bad headlines, with scientists concluding that the past eight years were the hottest on record. oceans surging to a record high, which feels extreme weather. and the great salt lake on the verge of collapse. this will expose millions of people to toxic dust. everything is totally fine. not a climate dumpster fire at all. in california, state that has been taking action to address the climate crisis, but even that is clearly not enough. in congress and the rest of the country needs to take it seriously or it's gonna get worse. the more you know. that's a readout.
