george santos to resign. and, it is coming from fellow republicans at his home state. we will take you to the congressman's district to see how constituents feel. >> i want this myth out. i want him out. he had the nerve to say that in two years he can open up. i don't answer to politicians, i answer to my constituents. i am one, and i want him out. i would like unprosecuted. >> we also have shocking new details in the case of a six-year-old who shot his teacher. and how a gun got into the school. we are keeping an eye on the rough weather situation in california, millions are in danger this weekend. we will get the latest in a lab report ahead. we are going to start with our breaking news out of the white house. more classified materials have been turned over to the justice department according to a white house official. let's bring in nbc's allie raffa, new york times washington correspondent charlie savage, and former cia chief of staff larry pfeiffer. ali, first you hear, what do we
12:03 pm
know about these new classified materials and their discovery? >> lindsey, at this point, we don't know too much more. we have these two new statements from president biden's personal lawyer about that, as well as special counsel richard somber, both of them really raising more questions than answers, more questions to add to this already lengthy list that most members of the white house press have already had in light of this controversy. but his statement is really the major development here. it talks about an addition to the third discovery of classified documents which was that single document found in an adjacent room to the garage in president biden's wilmington home. this past wednesday. remember that first tranche of documents was found at the penn biden center on november 2nd. the second batch inside of biden's garage on december 20th. and then in that third adjacent room was found that single document on wednesday, january
12:04 pm
11th. in this new statement he says that the presidents personal lawyers stopped searching his wilmington home after finding that single document because they don't have that security clearance required to continue reviewing them. somber says that because he has the security clearance allowed to continue doing this as white house counsel, he personally came here to wilmington to facilitate the transfer of these documents from the presidents home to the justice department saying in the statement in part quote, while i was transferring into the doj, officials who accompanied me, five additional pages with classification markings were discovered among the material with it for a total of six pages. the doj officials with me immediately took possession of them. it is important to note, this isn't considered a separate new discovery, these are considered additional pages to a discovery that was already made with that single document discovered on wednesday. but all of this, lindsey, once again raising the question of why the white house waited days
12:05 pm
to address this and acknowledge it. after we learned that the white house a couple of days ago had already responded to the initial report of that discovery after media reports about it. then they confirmed it. it also raises questions as to why president biden's personal lawyers were still allowed to continue searching separate locations after they didn't have the security clearance allowed to continue reviewing these materials. there was a likelihood of finding more classified documents of these alternate locations, more questions like who packed these documents, why some of them ended up at the penn biden center while others and did up here in wilmington. what level of security clearance these additional pages fall under after we learned at least one of the documents found at the penn biden center's classified under the most serious and high-level classification. so this is really a controversy which is putting a microscope on president biden and biden
12:06 pm
ministration. looking for more transparency, more honesty. more pressure, especially after this new development for more answers, we expect president biden to possibly talk about this maybe today, possibly tomorrow when he goes to atlanta to deliver some remarks, definitely some more questions we have for president biden and the administration as a whole. >> charlie, want to bring you in here because you have some new reporting saying that the additional pages, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said, they were discovered on thursday that cited only one, it turned off in a storage area adjacent to the garage of this wilmington home. what more can you tell us about how these documents came to be? >> well, the previous intro captures it. on wednesday night, biden's personal lawyers were searching the garage, they are next to the garage of his wilmington
12:07 pm
home along with his house on the beach. they discovered a document marked as classified in his room next to the garage. at that point, because they don't have clearance, active viruses, they stopped and left the room. they secured it and called the justice department. then the next morning is when they put out that statement saying hey, there was one more page. this answers the question of how is it that they said on thursday that there is one page when there was six pages. it was only hours later that he went up there to pick up that one page. they did it continue search of that room, and other materials in that room to find the other five pages. it is a very unpleasant thing for the white house i'm sure, another page here, another five pages there. certainly it keeps the story alive in a way that they cannot be happy about. >> charlie, what questions do you have with the administration about this? >> i want to know why some
12:08 pm
documents ended up in biden center, why other documents went to the house, what is the difference between those two batches of documents? why did it take six weeks to look at the house if -- did they know the documents have gone to the house as well? is there something different about each batch? who packed the batches? where were the documents that ended up any penn biden center? in between, and when biden open that office because, there was several months there in which he wasn't yet at the penn biden center. was there any evidence that anyone access the documents after they were packed up in the white house? or were they just sitting there still sealed up from the transition of getting out of the white house astros coming in? all of these questions are i think yet to be determined to really understand what happened here. >> larry, earlier this week you told the ap that this was quote your average one of the mill mistake and it is being handled in a by the book way.
12:09 pm
do you still feel that way as more documents were found here? >> generally, i feel that this is being handled in a good way. sadly, we are all human beings, people make mistakes. documents to get misplaced, we have a term of our -- just to refer to this kind of incident. a spillage, there are procedures in place. if it happens enough, there are procedures to deal with it. the news today is a little bit concerning, unclear people are searching for the documents. one of the reasons we put these documents, he's very sensitive documents and secure facilities is to avoid the disclosure of a document to someone who is not qualified. and to prevent foreign intel service tracing these documents. >> charlie, you have some reporting on how the cases of president biden, former president trump really differ. you see a quote, there were significant differences in how
12:10 pm
the documents came to light, how many there are and most important, how trump and biden responded. can you elaborate? >> certainly, obviously the reason this is such a big deal is because a mar-a-lago, the controversy, the criminal investigation into trump and his associates over his refusal to get back many, many documents that it come out of the trump white house and made the way to his florida club and residents. here, we have a situation where the -- no one knew these documents were missing, the biden legal team stumbles across them, they immediately self report the problem. by all accounts so far, they have cooperated with the justice department, the national archives intimately getting them back. they have given those back. by contrast, the classified documents that were at mar-a-lago came to light because the national realized that the unclassified documents were missing. there's no tracking system that says here is the entire
12:11 pm
universe of classified documents. they knew that obama had written a letter on his inauguration letter. those had not showed up, we are missing some stuff there. after six or seven months of negotiations, trump finally allows the national archives to come pick up what was then identified to be 15 boxes of stuff that should not even taken to mar-a-lago. only when they open those boxes in january of 2022 do they see 100 plus classified documents mixed in. that leads to the fbi pushing for more, finally a subpoena, it is not everything, they denied that subpoena. apparently voices are telling the justice department is still more that trump has to turn over. obviously, there is a commonality here, it is inescapable. which is classified documents that made their way in the white house when it was leaving, the administration was leaving, that should not of the company presidents as part of a transition period.
12:12 pm
but when that happens after that is quite different. in fact, there are significant legal implications as the two special counsel's, what each of them has been assigned to look at. >> give me said it happens enough that there is a term called spillage, what if anything needs to change or have been, does it change or process? >> i am worried that the processes that govern the departure of the administration either are not being followed to their letter or are perhaps gaps in these processes. i've suggested that a team of experts from the intel community, from the national archive, the office of management and budget, the pentagon, bring these experts together, review the process that exists, and make recommendations so we can lower the risk. we can never elevate the risk, but let's lower the risk based on places they should be. >> charlie savage, larry fiver, my thanks to both of you. i'm going to bring in
12:13 pm
democratic congressman zoloft in from california. congresswoman, thank you for being with us. we just heard charlie savage say this has to be unpleasant for the white house. what is your reaction to this latest development, this slow drip here of revelations. do you have concerns. well obviously, unclassified arguments are not supposed to be an unsecured facilities and president biden had at these documents and that should not have happened. it needs to be investigated and it is being investigated. so we will have to wait and find out all of the details and i am confident that we will get all of the details. i am sure he is unhappy about, it i have not spoken to him but who would be happy about this? >> do you support the appointment of the special counsel here, you said it should be investigated. it is being investigated. do you worry at all that this complicates the special counsel when it comes to the mar-a-lago documents? >> i don't think so.
12:14 pm
you know, the statute would not require the attorney general to appoint a special counsel but i can understand why the a.g. did this. he does not want it to appear that he has any bias or personal participation since he was appointed by president biden. so i am confident that in both cases, the special counsel will do their jobs, find out the informations and then take whatever action is appropriate. >> congresswoman, house republicans are also getting ready to investigate the january six committee's work. how concerned are you that they might try and malign the work of you and your committee? >> well they have tried to do that already and their various statements. they tried to do that before we even began. so i fully expect them to try and discredit us but i think it will be pretty tough. as you know, we released a voluminous report and then we release the evidence that was
12:15 pm
supporting their report and their entirety. it'll be pretty tough for them to spin this, anything other than what we have shown which is the ex president, was at the center of a plot to overthrow the election and enabled by many others, including some republican members of the house who are now complaining. so good luck to him. >> congresswoman, what do you be survive that the doj did not indict many of the individuals that your report found culpable in the lead up to at the combination of january 6th? >> well i don't know. i mean we found what we found, provided the evidence and we made referrals and some cases and some other cases we merely suggested further investigation. that is a legislative committee, that department of justice not only asked to find this likely a crime was committed and that is obvious, even federal judges have said that about whether
12:16 pm
there is evidence and sufficient to prove that beyond a reasonable doubt. that is the evidence that is burden that we bear and they need to reach that conclusion whether they can move forward or not. i cannot do that for them. >> congresswoman, the washington post is reporting that house republicans were preparing an emergency plan for breaching that that limit and that proposal still under discussion by the way. will direct the treasury department to prioritize certain payments if the u.s. hits that debt ceiling. some of, that under an immigration attorney, one of the buckets if you will that would not be included and that is border security. what is your reaction to this report and what do you think you and your colleagues can do to avoid a government shutdown? >> first, we should never use the debt ceiling which is basically paying the bills that have already incurred. the republicans voted for the expenditures and now they are saying they don't want to pay the bills. that can't be and in fact there
12:17 pm
is some question whether that is even constitutional since the death may not be questioned under the 13th amendment and the 14th amendment. but they should not hold it hostage. the idea that they could exempt things that would be politically unhappy for them as just not bright. obviously, we don't want to stop medicare and social security funding. but to defund the border patrol, to defund the immigration service and to defund the faa, so the planes cannot fly, that is stupid and you know they want to regress the issue of spending with large. we can do that but we cannot do it with the full faith and credit of the united states held as a hostage. >> before we let you go congresswoman, you released a statement along with the california congressional delegation. unanimously urging president biden to issue an expedited
12:18 pm
major disaster declaration to california and response to these winter storms. how devastating has it been for your state and how much do you think it'll take for the state to recover? >> well it's hard to know because the emergency is not over. it is raining now again and there is a bigger storm coming tomorrow and throughout the week. every member of the california delegation, republicans and democrats signed this letter including our two senators, urging the president to moved promptly for the major disaster declaration. there are some things that procedurally have to happen for him to do that but the theme administrators in california today. we had a conference call with the fema administrator yesterday and it is clear for the biden administration is putting maximum attention to this but it's a very serious disaster. a lot of damage, a lot of people are hurt. >> and we are thinking about your, state representative law friend thank you for your time.
12:19 pm
>> still ahead, we are stop congresswoman about california is on edge. forecasters warning of new storms about to hammer the state, we will have a live report on the ground next. plus the reporting on this case republican congressman george santos lies and how early some of those and his party knew about them and. >> have you heard what has happened? barbie has changed. barbie is new and different, she is the very same size but now she comes with a groovy outdoor look. and barbies lashes are really for real. >> bobby is change a lot over the decades, there is a new one in town for 2023. we will tell you all about her coming up. er coming up. the dribbler, and the day-dreamer... the dribbler's getting hands-on practice with her chase first banking debit card... the drummer's making savings simple with a tap... ...round of applause. and this dreamer, well, she's still learning how to budget, so mom keeps her alerts on full volume. hey! what? it's true! and that's all thanks to chase first banking.

12:24 pm
just south of the bay area. scott, what is the latest where you are and what are officials saying about when this might let up? >> well the good news lindsey is you can see, the rain has let up for now here where we are which is near silliness and the salinas river valley. there is still expected to be some more rain but the worst of the pattern does seem to be shifting but you can see, there is still a considerable amount of damage. that's the salinas river behind me which sort of bisects monterrey county and it is well over a flood stage of this point, expected to stay about these levels through mid week. that is compromised access from the interior parts of the county to the coastal parts of the county. and as a result, they have actually at the station key resources on both sides of the river. >> we have been fort run here in moderate county not to have any injuries or loss of life due to the flood so, obviously it's protecting property so we
12:25 pm
do have a number of residents on our county who have had serious flooding in their homes because of the proximity that they live towards the river . and of course paul close to 28,000 acres of farmland has been impacted by flooding. >> there is more graham news statewide though at least 19 people are dead and there still are evacuations going on, mandatory evacuations to the north of the santa cruz county, landslides, saying, coals it's going to be quite a while before they get this damage cleaned up and tallied in the first place. lindsey? >> and, scott we know it's absolutely devastating there. the area needs the, rain not all at once like this but what does this whole storm system, the series of systems mean in terms of the drought in california? >> well that means that we are better off than we were but this is a drought that's been going on for something like seven years. going into this rainy season in october, about 94% of the state
12:26 pm
was under extreme drought conditions. now, it's only about half the state. we still considerate and a bigger concern is that a lot of this water is going to simply runoff, the state just does not have the infrastructure to capture all of this rain coming so far, so fast. it's a system that really dates back 150 years before there was even a glimmer of talk about climate change. >> scott, cohn thank you. let's turn now to ukraine where friday russia's defense ministry said it captured soledar, town of the eastern part of the country. the ukrainian military disputed that claim saying its troops were still holding on to parts of the town. sky news alex rossi is on the ground. >> the air crackles with the sound of gunfire. ukrainian and russian troops are engaging at close quarters. the kremlin came stuff captured the salt mining town of soledar
12:27 pm
but holding it maybe another matter. units wait on standby to medivac troops. armored vehicles rushing along broken roads attending to the injured. as we move closer to the entrance of the town, we found deserted houses and abandoned animals. both sides have taken serious casualties under the relentless barrages of artillery. very few people have remained in this area and as we passed destroyed homes, the bomb started falling once again. there is a lot of fighting still going on here. we are just at the sound of a shell screech, it is not clear exactly what is going on inside of solid are but it seems that

12:35 pm
and calls for him to resign. you mentioned some members of his own party are now calling for him to resign including members of the freshman gop from the state of new york. that is not counting the voters and members have the nassau county gop who want to step down as well. yesterday we took a stop inside of his congressional district office year and two aides were working but they cannot say whether or not their boss would show up to answer any of the constituent calls, i want to listen to what what voter told me and they will go ahead and look that with the latest from congressman matt gates was most recently asked what he thinks about george santos. take a listen. >> he's at, i would take 142,000 to get me to step down. are you one of those people? >> yes i would sign on to that but i decide because my politics, i think that any relationship predicated on ally is bound for failure. >> it is up to the political
12:36 pm
process to resolve those things in the is a congressman, he was seated and so i will treat him as a colleague. he is going to have to endure the process that goes through managing the conduct of members. >> and see lindsey, that is the dynamic right? george santos himself said he is not really waiting to see what may be the house speaker, decides he is waiting on his constituents. the hundred and 42,000 as he said to tell him what to do next. while you are hearing more and more voices are joining that growing chorus of people telling him that you need to step down, we need to have fair representation here in our district. you can bet the people of new york three will definitely keep in on their word to see if they can spot in this weekend. maybe even get him trending to see if in fact he will step down. lindsey? >> george soliz, thank you. let's bring in miles taylor, former dhs chief of staff and cofounder of the forward party. so miles, first a lot of directions we can go with this. overall, want to get your
12:37 pm
reaction to the ongoing george santos saga and his refusal to step down. >> yes, i think lindsey that somebody like george santos, we are treating right now as sort of an outlier year of the republican caucus. i don't think george santos is an outlier. i really think that his case is character, sort of the exemplar of what has happened with the maga wing of the republican party that is not so much a wink anymore. it really is the core of the party now in the house of representatives which has become in the sense, the house of trump. this idea about lying about your background, constantly trying to shift with new controversies and distractions has become a primary tool for people like george santos and the party at large. i really think he exemplifies what has happened in that place. i worked for years in the house of representatives when the republicans have the majority and you know, mitch mcconnell's words, you really seen a decline in candidate quality. i don't think there's a direct connection to trump and
12:38 pm
trumpism. this is the wreckage in the aftermath of his takeover of the party. >> when you look at preventing some effects from happening again, you have the two different parties and the county here, republican and democrats. neither dug up enough of this, you can blame the media, no media signed on here except for a small publication in long island. maybe the nassau county chairman county told the times that i guess we will have to rely on that person to be truthful to us. does that mean something like this can happen again? >> absolutely, i think this will happen again lindsay and not just there but around the country. you go look at the data and we will not do too much of an academic exercise here but you go and look at data, across the country, the political process is getting more and more polarized and is handing power over to the extremes. that is not a hyperbole or a myles personal opinion, data shows increasingly hard-core ideological primary voters are more and more in charge in elections.
12:39 pm
which means congressional districts are becoming less and less competitive. so the candidates that are winning tend to be the ones that are more extreme, appealed to the base and we are really seeing that on the far-right. we are seeing that in the republican party and in fact, around 95% of members of congress who are incumbents get reelected. and other words, they're more likely than not to win the races without any competition. this is problematic, and again it means roughly the 10% of extremes are governing for the rest of us. the 90% of us. that is the problem and it'll take long term democracy reforms to pick. until then, you see especially on the republican side, these really fringe maga candidates winning more and more races as the years go on until we make those adjustments. >> we are seeing some of this, and the house already. they are prove this week they select subcommittee on the weaponization of the federal government. here the committee will be up with the scrutinize any issue relating to civil liberties of the first amendment. it will be one of the most
12:40 pm
powerful step committees and recent history. it will be headed by jim jordan, who himself is under investigation for efforts to overturn a 2020 election. what should we expect to come out of the subcommittee? >> you can expect revenge lindsey. you know this, you and i have been talking about this for a few years is that you know i've said that if the republicans, my former party retake the house, the main focus will be revenge. this is the subcommittee that will lead the charge. i find it ironically named, i really do because the idea that republicans are going to focus on the weaponization of government is interesting because in the two years that i worked under donald trump, i saw that in his number one objective. he wanted to actively weaponize the federal government. in fact when i left and blew the whistle, very ironically, he then tried to weaponize the federal government to come after me for saying he had weaponize the federal government. now we have republican sending a committee to look into. this ultimately lindsey, the interesting thing will be to
12:41 pm
law enforcement. they said the one best to get the fbi, a lot of these members of congress have talked about dismantling the fbi and doj. that will not just hard public trust in those institutions, it will be an actual danger. we have seen maga supporters go and tried to shoot up fbi field offices, there have been threats against judges. we have seen federal agents stocks because of this far-right attention and animosity towards law enforcement. that is the big concern and if democrats are smart, they will paint this as an effort to undermine law enforcement and undermine cops to try and turn this back on the republicans. >> after being quick with you on this, i want to show whatever tweets here because you said kevin mccarthy maybe the speaker but it's donald trump's hand that is on the gavel. we have that with mccarthy saying thursday, he will look into expunging trumps impeachments? is that possible? >> yes well certainly, they can pass a resolution in the house expressing the will of that body but you know lindsey, i will make a quick here.
12:42 pm
they will do three things this maga house. it will try to expunge donald trump's record. they will try to exact revenge against his political emmys and they will try to lay the groundwork for the resurgence of trumpism. maybe not trump himself but trumpism. this is no longer the house of representatives, this is the house of trump, make no mistake. his hand is on that gavel as long as mccarthy is the speaker. >> miles taylor, thank you. coming, up concerning new details raise more questions and the school shooting of a teacher by a six year old boy. the warning sign administrators received ahead of time, next. otif me, next just what you need for your home. is that glitter? this table is on its last leg. y'all need this. you're kelly clarkson! a whole new look for a whole lot less. ahhh! -you're kelly clarkson! i am... and you need this. i love it! are we in a wayfair commercial? maybe. personal sauna.
