[inaudible] , -- >> i don't have information at this point what for that is coming out, there we will clarify that. i don't have, do you -- yeah, can we pause on the name of the business just out of respect for the business owners and the victims and survivors, and then we will work on you as soon as we can get that out. and i heard the question over here to my right about caliber, or if the rounds heard are consistent if they were recovered at all? >> we are still looking at that, and i would prefer not to put
9:01 am
the caliber out at this second, just because it is -- it may hinder what we are trying to do. and again, our priority is we have to get this guy in custody. and that is exactly what we plan to do. [inaudible] not a detail at this time, other than what i described earlier. he the suspect watched in, armed, and he wasof individuals. >> you are telling people that it is safe to attend chinese new year events in this area? >> yes. and if that changes for any reason, we will immediately notify our community through all of you. >> at this point, can you say anything about the weapon that was used in alejandra, was that a long rifle, was it an ar, what was it? >> it was not an assault rifle. thank you. >> sir, regarding the events
9:02 am
yesterday, there were thousands of people. i wonder if they're any safety measures in place for that happening and the screening of the weapons, what are we doing before that happens? >> are you speaking about the lunar new year event? were you there yesterday? >> yes. thousands of people. but >> i had dozens of officers present, i had officers in plain clothes, i had officers in uniform, i had tactical uniforms walking around with long guns, i had drones overhead. i had the perimeter locked down with barriers. we did not screen people for weapons, there was probably over 100,000 people present, so it is impossible to screen everybody for weapons. yesterday was a safe event. primarily because of the diligence of the officers that were present there. i can't speak about the event where the crime occurred, it is a separate incident. it has no relation to the chinese new year event earlier in the day.
9:03 am
but >> when we expect the next update? >> we will do a next update in a couple hours, hopefully. >> same location? >> hopefully. thank you very much >> reporter: that was absolutely remarkable, especially that last part of a news conference we heard there, what we were listening there were's officers in the monterey park region, about 15 minutes or so east of los angeles in southern california as a bid you all a very good day. i am alex whitney here in new york, we are going to begin with all of this, this breaking news, there is a man hunt underway for a gunman in a deadly mass shooting there and monterey park. here is what we know from the police update. i will start with what we've known for sometime, that being ten people have been killed, another ten have been injured, and their injuries range from survivable and stable conditions to that of being in critical condition. the suspect, notably, remains
9:04 am
at large right now. police have said just one description factor that it is in asian mail, that is all we know. we knew it was a male earlier today, the only new revelation to come from this news conference is that that person is being described as male. >> but, most importantly, that person is still on the run. the fear is the thing though. at the end, we are getting word of what happened the scanner traffic that was heard in the city of alhambra valley. hammer is just about two miles or so away from monterey park. what that skinner traffic revealed is that there was another attempt at some sort of an event, we believe it was perhaps another dance hall, where a man was stopped by patrons of that location when that person entered a dance hall. again, i am tentatively saying
9:05 am
it was a dance, hall we believe that's what it was also in alhambra. that person was seen to be carrying a weapon, was disarmed, and that person left. this allegedly happened via skinner traffic, 17 to 18 minutes after the horrible incident in monterrey park, where again, ten people were killed and ten people are fighting for their lives as a result of those injuries. so we have a little more information from the sheriff, we are going to now take a quick listen to some of the details about the survivors, and what they have heard about the suspect. take a listen. at >> the ten additional victims were transported to numerous local hospitals, they are listed in various conditions from stable to critical condition. there is a male suspect that fled the scene, and remains
9:06 am
outstanding as of this moment. our very preliminary description has been described as a male asian. and that is from the scene here in monterrey park. and, it is taken us a while, and please be patient with us, because as we are interviewing victims and witnesses, we have gotten different descriptions of one suspect. >> clearly, this is an ongoing investigation, they have a lot of pieces to put together here. let's go to josh lederman who is on the scene, they are in monterrey part for us. josh, what more have you learned from this, and are there any indications that the victim may have been targeted or that this was a hate crime. i'm going to be honest, i was making my way from my office here into the studio for around two minutes, missed part of that news conference, was anything said about that as being a possible motive or suspicion?
9:07 am
>> yeah, a large developments in short succession here, alex. we've also learned in that news conference from law enforcement authorities a little bit more about the identities of the ten people who did pass away and were pronounced dead on the scene. five of them were male, five of them female, according to law enforcement here. but the most important piece of information to come out of this most recent update from authorities is that preliminary description of the suspect, with the l.a. county sheriff saying that that preliminary information is that it is an asian male. and that, obviously, is starting to address some of the questions that have come up in the initial hours of this investigation, about whether or not this was a hate crime. given that two out of three people who live here in monterey park our asian american. now, the fact that this suspect is believed to be an asian male, of course, does not rule out the possibility that this could still have been a hate crime, but it does seem to speak to some of the unofficial fears of
9:08 am
potentially an outsider coming into this community and targeting the asian american community. but there is a lot more of investigators that are still trying to find out, including about that second incident, a couple miles from here, where they believe that someone had a gun, it was wrestled away from them, they're also was a white cargo van associated with that incident in alhambra that authorities say is of interest to them. but, authorities fully acknowledging at this point that they cannot say whether or not that was connected to the incident that took place here in monterrey park. and i want you to hear from one witness who was near the scene last night about what they saw and heard. take a listen. >> i did hear some sounds going off, and i said, fireworks? and then i knew for a fact it was not fireworks when i heard the helicopter up above me. because we never get helicopters around here. it is very surprising, shocking, to hear that something like that could happen went on in,
9:09 am
not only a small city, but my city. you would never think it would happen. >> and just give you a sense, alex, of what this community is like. behind, me you can see the main thoroughfare here in monterrey park that runs perpendicular to the city bank which is approximately the ballroom where this incident took place. this is the main drag here in monterrey park, where just yesterday, people were celebrating, according, to local authorities perhaps about 100,000 people celebrating the eve of the lunar new year. authorities downplaying the possibility that this was connected to that. they say the don't have any indication of that yet, but they have canceled the second day of lunar new years celebrations today as this period of celebration turns into tragedy in monterrey park. alex.
9:10 am
>> josh, let me just update you as you, were reporting what you know. we got word that alhambra valley tint, again, that is something that we are just getting details from, what skinner traffic suggested, that a ballroom by the name of live libel room is a place that, as of this morning, has police tape across its front door and an officer guarding. it not want to make very clear, nbc news has yet to confirm this report. clearly, josh, that is something you will be doing for us as soon as you get off of speaking with me here. but, according to this one report, detectives could be seen working near the open back door, there was a woman wearing gloves, examining the door handle, and again, this is for neighboring live lie ballroom, which we want to reiterate as you reported, josh, is a place where i guess patrons themselves saw some sort of a weapon, a gun, it wasn't specifically described, via the
9:11 am
scanner traffic that was overheard and they were the ones that got that and wrestled that out of the person's hand, described as a male. yes, you are right, these incidents have not yet been put together. but the thing is, i'll hammer is a mere two miles from henry park, and this happened also, allegedly, at a ballroom, and again, 17 to 18 minutes, that's gonna traffic became apparent after the incident in monterrey park. lots still to put together, we just wanted to let viewers know a few more details as we are getting them and josh i know you are going to get on that as well. i want to share with you. thank you for reporting what you do know so far. and we will expect to have you keep us updated, thank you josh, . >> let's bring in former seattle police chief, carmen best. carmen, welcome to you, it was quite a reveler tory to some degree, monterey park sheriff
9:12 am
and pd news conference that we heard just there. given what he who heard from authorities, coupled with what is being reported on the scanner traffic, where do you think things stand here and how effective are they handling this investigation? >> good afternoon, alex. obviously, we are talking about another mass shooting occurring in the country we are getting close to 700 this year. right now we, are not able to definitively tighten to incidences decatur, and, however, the proximity and the timeframe we was -- even a probability that we are looking at the same suspect. obviously, you can't say that at this point because it is preliminary, but the fact they are looking at a both locations and occasionally there could be a tie. we want people to rule in or out the fact that this is the same suspect.
9:13 am
>> how concerning is, it carmen, that there is clearly a killer suspect at large, police have yet to track him down, what does that do form a police leadership perspective. what would you do in a situation like this? everyone is going to be on, hiler is nothing more important than bringing the victim into custody. we don't know what he will do next. he is probably on the run, and that is just the facts. so we are going to have every cop everywhere local authorities looking for anything else suspicious at this time that we are trying to track down the suspect. it is absolutely paramount. the >> car, in the shooting took place in a predominantly 65% according to the latest census, asian american community. it happened during the lunar new year celebrations, yes a
9:14 am
motive has not been established does anything scream out to you that this could be a hate crime? >> that was my first thought, is that we could have the chinese media celebrations that are recurring, and, as they said, 100,000 people gathered, many people with the preparation for the celebrate. so my first thought was this could be up to the united states and attack on a specific demographic. that said, even though that this initial description of the suspect that you said is correct, i still wouldn't rule it out, but it does rule out maybe some of the other things. but right now it is just too early to speculate, so we are going to have to get this person into custody and determine what exactly was going on there. >> >> you are 100% right on that, tremendous. thank you so much for weighing in on this breaking news. we appreciate your sage insights. there let's turn, now everyone, to our top. story we will keep an eye on that one though, i promise. this one is the new details which are surfacing about
9:15 am
additional classified items found at president biden's home in delaware. on friday, the fbi recovered six items with classification markings and surrounding materials. some of which, authorities say, dated back to his time in the senate as well as his years as vice president. the newest discovery sparking new reactions this morning from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. >> i am grateful that the president is now being more transparent about it, but he did had it for two once once was discovered. and then nobody nobody for five years. and the investigation oversight does gets the other side of. that >> we are all human and make mistakes. i can tell you i don't think anybody intended for to fall into the wrong hands. i know they didn't intend that to happen. couldn't have happened? i don't know. >> the latest documents marked the fourth discovery in this case, first place on november 2nd at the pen biden center in washington, d.c., or two sources say that fewer than a dozen documents were found.
9:16 am
the second, a small number of documents were found on december 20th in president biden's wilmington garage. the third discovery took place between january 11th and 12 for a total of six pages which were found. nbc's mark alba has more details on what led to the fourth discovery on friday. >> the white house revealing more classified information was found at president biden's delaware home. taken by the justice department on friday after a nearly 13-hour fbi search of the entire property. done at the invitation of the president's legal team who said that they offered to provide prompt access for comprehensive check of any potential classified material that was not already turned over to the doj. the disclosure comes just days after the president said he had no regrets over his handling of the documents saga. in his first public comment since the appointment of a special counsel. >> what the lawyers have told me they want me to do is exactly what we are doing.
9:17 am
there was no there there. >> in this, case there was no search warrant that prompted a detailed review. unlike the fbi seizure at former president trump's mar-a-lago estate last august. a distinction that the biden white house has made repeatedly. >> that was monica alba reporting there. we now have our team of reporters and analysts joining us on today's development. we'll begin with allie raffa in rehoboth beach, delaware, where the president is spending his weekend. welcome, the white house is speaking today about the latest discoveries and what are we learning about the circumstances around that search? >> yeah, alex. just a remarkable new development in this growing controversy. it is really adding more questions to the already lengthy list we have for this white house. and the white house is responding this morning by trying to clarify some of the details there. you heard monika lay out a bit of the basics here that the fbi conducted this 13-hour exhaustive search of president biden's wilmington home for the
9:18 am
second time. they say that this was done at the request of president biden's legal team. in other words no warrant was needed and this was done in cooperation with the president's legal team. out of that search came the discovery of six items with classification markings dating all the way back to when the president was a senator. he certainly senate for 36 years, alex. in sam's special assistant to the president spoke to our colleague jonathan capehart this morning by clarify some of these details. listen to what he had to say. >> after the lawyers found an initial additional document to the presidents home, the president asked his team to reach out to the doj and give them access to my house. proactive involuntary and consensual as the doj said in their statement yesterday. so they did that on friday and went through, as you noted in your, open unprecedented material. stuff going back decades. his to do lists from decades ago. to just make sure that they have everything. this is all part of the presidents commitment to total
9:19 am
cooperation with the justice department, making sure they have the information that they need. >> alex, this is now the fourth discovery of classified materials when you combine the penn biden center and the president biden's wilmington home. remember that this comes a week after we learned of another discovery at president biden's wilmington home. you and i talking about that as soon as it broke on the air last saturday. at this point we have so many more questions than answers still. we don't know how many documents total have been recovered from both the penn biden center president biden's wilmington home. we did not know the level of classification, that these fall under. and also begs the question, we heard president biden on thursday out touring the storm damage in california really downplaying the backlash over all of this by saying that there is no there there and that he is no regrets in handling these documents. when we can assume that he knew about this pending search of his wilmington home, that came
9:20 am
today after those remarks. still so many questions that we have for this white house that we are hoping to get answered very soon, alex. >> okay and ali, i think there's some christmas for next guest on this. we will bring in peter baker, msnbc political analyst and correspond to the new york times. as well as cynthia oxen, ems nbc legal analyst and former federal prosecutor. welcome to you about. peter, you first hear. the president has yet to make a 2024 announcement, but that could happen next month after the state of the union on the. seventh if he runs, what could be the political impact of these documents and the case around? it how does the biden camp explain it? how does >> for the moment, thn camp is not that much worried about a larger political impact. they think it is mainly a d.c. beltway story that the average parent is not going to focus on. they're trying to replicate the bill clinton strategy from 1998 and 1999, have any present look like he is mostly focused on policy and serious governing
9:21 am
not on scandal. having said that, as we have seen in the past special counsel investigations have a way of distracting the white house and a way of metastasizing and way of continuing to chip away at a politician or a presidents momentum, or ability to communicate his or her message. so it is not a welcome thing obviously. i think the biggest political impact for president biden it lets former present trump off the map when it comes to the issue of his own mishandling of classified documents. we can say all we like, it is true, of course, the president trump was defying, clearly, a subpoena issue of the court and having a search of his home against his interest, because he was refusing to turn over everything that he had collected. very different from the biden case in which every time they found something they've immediately turned it over but having said that it means is going to be hard for the body cam to be criticizing the trump camp on this because that distinction is going to be lost
9:22 am
in the wash. and because trump supporters going to look at this and say look either treating them differently than they treat their own president and they're gonna kind of come after our president and former president and not come after the sitting president because he is a democrat. it is enough to muddy the waters and is not helpful for president biden. >> i appreciate your student alice of it but let me just throw back to you anecdotally. any republican that i have spoken with in the last couple of weeks are like, look, biden is doing the same thing that trump did >> and of course there are differences. especially because biden never said, these documents are mine. that is a basic thing there. but i will also tell you that every democrat with whom i have spoken to, peter, has said odd and then gone out to elaborate what they meant there. so when this is happening, i will grant you what the biden ministration is saying. we are gonna focus on this or that. but do you think they're gonna have to change their tune and focus a little more on this?
9:23 am
to guess red of the gas reaction to the lot of democrats have? >> you are right about the democratic reaction. there was a sense that this is their own goal today across themselves more trouble than was necessary. it comes back to a legal strategy that biden decided to follow. the strategy was that when they discover these first documents in november let us hug the justice of this house as possible. let's work as closely as possible with the investigators in seem to be as cooperatives possible so there is no reason that they would have any reason to think anything affairs happened here. that they will conclude it was innocent mistake. we're not anti trump we're not gonna do what trump didn't resist. but in the process of doing that they concluded that therefore they should not go public because doing so would seem to be litigating in the media. they thought that might aggravate the justice department. so they decided not to do that. as a result, for 60 days they did not tell the public and they did not do it until a reporting -- first reported it. now they're trying to dig themselves over the political
9:24 am
role because it looks like we're trying to cover it up for two months which they couldn't because they first discover the story before the midterm elections when it would've been big news. there are things, still. we're gonna take that hit and try to be more productive in the press in the media by explaining ourselves. but the overall strategy they still think is right. even though they got special counsel out of it they want to make sure that they are looked at as cooperatives as possible with investigators. so in the and the investigators do not find any criminal intent or anything to prosecute. >> gotcha. cynthia, moving to you here. the president is already the center of that doj special counsel investigation. so from the perspective of you being a formal federal prosecutor, could this latest discovery create any legal vulnerabilities for the president? >> i think it is part important for people to understand that what they have done is do exactly what the justice department has told him to do. and what we know is that has caused the political problems but as a legal matter it is the right way to go forward.
9:25 am
the fbi does not do searches voluntarily, consent searches, unless there are no rules, there are no ways they can -- say you can't go in this, room or you can't look at that or you can't open that drawer. when you have a consent search by the fbi, they went through that house with a fine tooth comb. no rules. and that does show how much cooperation by the days given the fbi, and trying to help the department of justice into exactly what they want. the obvious legal problem that comes from all of this is because we have to special counsel's, both of whom the trump won and the biden won, are going to recommend something to the department of justice. the attorney general is going to have to weigh them together. ordinarily if you have a case of california, that is deciding separately than a case out of new york. these are going to be cases are going to be looked at it together. that does weaken the ability, frankly, of the cautious attorney general to make a decision on the trump case. we all know what the differences are most notably for me is the obstruction.
9:26 am
but it makes it harder for somebody to make a decision to go ahead and indict trump. knowing that the cases are similar with biden. >> let me ask, you politically speaking the strategy by the biden administration this morning which has been relatively tightlipped about this. is that backfire on them at this point? and if it is, is that just temporary? timing can be everything. >> it goes to what you're democrats were telling you then. this is not what they want to be talking about in the definitely do not want to be seeing the white house having to correct the statements that they made or that were incorrect to begin with or drilling out information that comes out and gets into bits and pieces. why was it that the public didn't know about this and didn't know the searches or the other possible locations? so you didn't have continuing discoveries like the one that we had just last month. i think that that is a great frustration for democrats. but you are, right there trying
9:27 am
to get out there and go more public. you saw, obviously, the white house spokesman, it is a new thing. getting out of the briefing room because it has not gone well. and -- left to say things like i don't have any more comment for you on that. or to make statements, as you have, when she said that the original discovery team to contact the justice department, which it didn't. do the archives do that. so, you know, i think they are trying to get ahead of the eight ball, having lost some momentum here in terms of the public a case. there is a lot of intention to that right now in the white house, to do. that we will see if they're able to smooth that out, and present a more coherent message to the public. >> listen, guys i only have time for one more question given the breaking news of that mass shooting in monterrey park. so i will toss it to, you cynthia. do you see the fact that the white house asked for this search, does that provide any legal cover? does he knew that kind of legal cover?
9:28 am
>> it does not provide legal, cover but it does tell you that they are completely cooperating. the facts will be the facts. if for some reason there is any way that they had anything, that will come out. it does not provide legal cover. but it does show you that they are cooperating, and that they do not think they have anything to hide. >> okay. peter, you broke the story about ron klain will be stepping down soon. we are not enough time to talk about it today, because of these around for a few more weeks next weekend, we'll talk about this. thank you so much. you cannot make this stuff up. actually, you could make it up. no one would believe. you however, what if almost everyone believed you and even elected to congress? until it all fell apart. and, now no one knows what to believe. the george santos saga is going to end someday. my next guest predicts how. ext guest predicts how edom unlimited card. earning on my favorite soup. aaaaaah. got it.
