city of torrents where a van believed to be linked to the shooting suspect has been surrounded. an unidentified percent reported to have been found inside the paint. no information confirming the identity has been released. president biden has been briefed throughout the day by homeland security officials, vice president harris, offering the white house's condolences earlier today as the monterrey park community struggles to understand what happened. of course, why. we will bring you the latest up to date information throughout the hour. plus the rest of the day's political news. first, let's go live to monterey park california. nbc's josh lederman is standing by. josh, what is new at this hour in this terrible story.

>> rev, a mass shooting turned into a day long man hunt which then led to a barricaded suspect situation over in torrents, california. about a half an hour from here in monterrey park where the shooting took place last night. at this hour, we are waiting for an update from law enforcement about whether they have identified whether the man they believed was in the white band you are seeing on your screen right now is their suspect whether or not he is still alive or in custody. we know the situation interns played out hours after police said that they were looking for this white van. they identified the agent mail that they said hadn't associated with the van and also was in the belief of law enforcement accountable for the shooting last night that killed beaten people. sent another ten to the hospital. we then saw police surround the white van four hours they had all kinds of tactical vehicles

and swat vehicles surrounding it. at this point in time, we learned in the last few minutes from the l.a. sheriff's department that the swat operation is over. they are no longer with trying to apprehend an armed suspect in torrents. they say the neighborhood is safe. now, of course, that still leaves open the question of is this the suspect from monterey park? is he dead? is he in the custody of police? we do not have the information out. the immediate threat intolerance where police have been standing around that van trying to make it was safe for hours, the immediate situation seems to be resolved. the big question now, is there still a suspect on the loose responsible for this shooting as this community of monterey park, its neighboring communities, really, the entire region wonder where there is still an active threat. how this happened and why this happened. police saying they still don't know the motive for what took

but broader conversations. it's tearing us apart. >> now, switching back to politics for a moment. just after we went off the air last night, we learned that the fbi investigators found another set of classified materials. six items consisting of documents with classification markings and surrounding materials discovered during a consensual search of president biden's wilmington delaware home this friday. the white house says it is cooperating with the justice department's special counsel investigations. of course, your republican colleagues in the house have been calling on the doj to turn over information for months investigation of the matter. the doj refusing the request citing the ongoing investigation. do democratic senators, joe manchin and tim kaine, have

signaled this weekend that they are open to investigating the president. and what is your response to this latest discovery? what do you make of democrats now open to investigating president biden? >> there is an investigation. authority general merrick garland has appointed a special counsel. president biden's 100% cooperating with the special counsel. they have notified the justice department as soon as they found these classified documents. they have invited the justice department into the president's personal residence to find any other documents that may be classified. that shows to me that the president believes in the rule of law and is fully cooperating. he is acting in a way you would want anyone to act in these types of circumstances. >> earlier this afternoon, reproductive rights supporters mobilize coast to coast for the

americans reached trump's actions were more serious. president biden has been cooperating with investigators while former president trump did not fully comply with subpoenas and has openly challenged the doj and criticize the special prosecutor in his case. how do you see this playing out politically? >> rev, you're going to end up with a republican circus even though what we can tell so far, the handling by the trump team of this, unfortunately, the biden team, the biden team has cooperated from the beginning. they have invited the doj to come in and make sure that they button this whole thing up. that they address it properly. it is not great. nobody loves it. it's not a great thing. they are proud of it. donald trump believed it was his right to take these documents, store them, for whatever you see was going to put them to when it was in fact wrong. he fought it legally at every turn.

he continues to fight it at every turn. whereas the president is engaging right now in a pretty good faith effort to address it as a problem. we don't know the contents of the documents yet. we have been made aware that donald trump took some of the most highly classified documents with him. we don't know that these things are anyway comparable at this point. we can certainly see that biden doesn't have the active affect of a guilty man. whereas trump seems to be covering this entire thing up in a huge frenzy. >> michelle, how do you view the events? the events >> it is frustrating to watch the political media spin up into the emails mode again. i agree with rick. it seems irresponsible what biden did. when the rate happened in mar-a-lago, everyone talked about how one of the positive things in whether or not trump would be prosecuted was intent. it's really obvious to everyone that the intent is very

different here. biden has bent over backwards to cooperate with authorities, rather than say he has the right to declassify these documents in his mind. that they are his and not the governments. so, instead what you have is there is this period of symmetry and i think too many of us in the media rather than trying to explain why they are different are simply saying, well, it's going to look one way, it creates the impression. it feeds the narrative without taking into account that we are creating the narrative as we comment on it. >> michelle, let me stay with you a minute. today the washington post is reporting jeff zients will be come president biden's new chief of staff. this follows the report that ron klain is stepping down from the role in the coming weeks. now, cnn's helped oversee the white house's coronavirus

response. what do you foresee will be his top priority in these new positions? >> oh, i can't say. ron claims certainly was someone who was masterful at holding the democratic coalition together and making progressives feel heard and included and integrating some of the priorities into what was often a more centrist agenda. i don't think we know whether the new chief of staff represents a change in direction by the administration or just a change in personality. >> rick, as we do the show tonight we focus on two stories. tragic mass shooting in california and the 50th anniversary of roe versus wade. i can't help but think about the fact that on both issues, modern-day republican party is out of step with most americans on both issues. polling suggests a majority of

americans support at least some form of legal abortion and also some form of gun restrictions. you have tried with the lincoln project to change attitudes with in the gop. do you see any chance they will soften their stance is on either topic anytime soon. >> at the lincoln project, we have been good at addressing a narrow slice of republicans who ranged between seven and 11% of the electorate. look, 25% of republican female voters are pro-choice. about 50% of male republican voters are pro-choice. the gun control stuff is messier with the polling. i will say this. the way in which the gop is approaching the issue of abortion in particular with all these punitive punishments, all these very excessive things like the greg abbott snitch law in texas where people are incentifies to report if they're having abortions.

they have clearly gone well outside the political and even former ideological nature. i mean, george herbert walker bush who i worked for back in the day was -- the busch rule was abortion should always include rape, incest, the life of the mother. even the people with a strong pro-life view in the past adopted that. now they are saying nothing. now they want no exceptions, no exemptions, including things like -- i think it is really taking it from a pro life move into a political attack on individual liberty at a level -- where do your pro-choice are pro-life, the way that they are dressing as a sub suspect excessive. it's causing a backlash. >> michelle, on the same subject, do you see any movement at all from the republican side on either gun control or on pro-life -- pro-choice? >> the movement is further

towards the right. it is a complete refusal to consider any reasonable regulation of gun purchases. when it comes to abortion, what you see is pressure from some of the activists who want to see this house have a national abortion ban, even though it has no chance of becoming law. in the biden administration, you are seeing states, generally, the pressure is to narrow the exceptions. to be more punitive with women who are getting pills through the mail. in the past, it was the line of the anti-abortion movement that they didn't want -- that women's were victims of abortion. they didn't want to arrest or prosecute women who had to end their pregnancies. that has gone out the window. you are seeing a lot of prosecutors and republican officials really getting ready to start going after the women who will continue to end their

politicsnation. let's turn to an expert as we follow the latest developments in a saturday night shooting in los angeles county. leaving ten people dead, joining me now is rob demarco former fbi supervisor and founder of sierra one consulting. rob, the los angeles department released an image of the alleged suspect. officials mentioned they were looking for a white van. earlier we saw images of a swat team surrounding a similar vehicle. why wasn't the suspected

shooter's name released? what is the process in these types of -- men >> the name earliest, at the time when there is an investigation, they thought if they released a name, it could possibly harm the investigation. i'm not a sure about the exact details. the release of the picture was for public safety. they said, okay, they are awaiting the information that is released. what do we need to get out to help the public help us to put them into a safer place. what do we want to hold back? if they have released a name, it could be a whole bunch of press going over to his house. they might not know his house was secure. they might not have known if he had gone to a cousins house or something. as the public gets that, they start putting themselves in that position.

-- so, i think the name was, they waited, they don't think anything good was going to come out of it. if someone sees the picture and know some, they're going to call in and talk to us about his location or stuff like that. the white van was worked at the time. they did not know exactly if he was in there or not. i still haven't heard if they confirmed it positively. they knew it was connected. from what i heard, when they got up on it and surrounded. they heard something that sounded like a gunshot. at that point, they now still have to try to make communications with them. i have been in situations where someone was barricaded in a house. they shot the gun. everyone kind of thought that it was a suicide. in reality, he was laying down and faking it. he was waiting for a tactical team to come in. instead, we bridge the walls

and we put a drone in and we saw that he was and in fact dead. the tactical read up to that, they were trying to communicate with them. they probably had some kind of camera. looking for any signs of life. and then they finally got to the point where -- he had to open the doors. i'm not sure exactly what happened. most likely, the person in the van committed suicide. they secured the scene. and now they are processing it. >> what might be some of the tools that law enforcement would use to discern whether the vehicle that they are looking for is in fact the one the suspect used. given that the white van is so common. >> exactly, we look for -- you probably remember back then it wasn't the vehicle they were using. i would say if they had an eyewitness putting him escaping in the van, if they had a

partial license plate, if they started immediately looking at the closed caption television that someone may have had from a store around where he escaped from to be able to put a tag to the van. i'm not sure how they got on to it at torrents. somehow they did. just going off caution, you can see the van is parked odd in the parking lot. was it a police engagement that started following it? he pulled in and then decided, okay, gig is up type of thing. he might have been listening to the news saying they know i have a white van. something along those lines and something cause the van to go into the parking lot, not park, it didn't look like it was intentional. he just stopped. police surrounded it's when they went to the scene. there was a ton of cops. the cops were coming up on it. they got into a safe and tactical place with the two

armored vehicles. it's great about that. penitent so he can't get out. and then slowly start to bring the situation to a peaceful resolution and then that's when they heard the gunshot. you still can't just go in and out assuming that he ended his life. >> now when does law enforcement know when it's appropriate to confront the target, when it's a standoff like we've seen today? >> in the old days a lot of the police used to do dynamic entrance. and if there's not a hostage involved, i was on the hostage rescue team, you bypass when there's someone else lie -- you die bypassed dangerous areas to bring that peacefully resolved. that's why you use explosives, all these things to surprise them because you're going in harm's way. the boroughs learned, if there's no one else is life involved, you can sit back, take your time, make it safe all around.

and you start talking to them, we have negotiators that do that all the time. and a lot of times, they can peacefully talk someone out, giving themselves up, we're coming to a peaceful resolution. time at that point, is on your side. you have uncontained, he can't go anywhere, that bad can't move, you've basically taken all the civilians out of gunfire arranged by evacuating storefronts, other vehicles, and now you can just sit, and i've been on hostage strongholds for hours, and hours. where we've rotate new tactical teams from urgency assault, in case something happens. but you could sit there and barricade a subject for days if necessary. at one point, he's gonna need something in that van. and you're gonna try to come to, a way to get up food, or whatever. and again that's what the negotiators come in working with tactical team. we found that you don't have to go in, then you should. it you're putting [inaudible] lives in jeopardy.

coverage of politicsnation. let's go live to monterrey park, california, nbc's josh lederman is standing by. josh give us the latest. >> well, reverend al, we've been inspecting a news conference about 20 minutes from now, in torrents, california, which is where parents -- surrounding that white cargo that, and they first said earlier today which they were looking for in connection with these incidents. we're starting to hear, the news conference where we're expected to learn what exactly is happened with the van. it may no longer take place. we're trying to get to the

bottom of how we're gonna get our next update from law enforcement. but clearly, there's a whole lot of activity in the last couple of hours in torrance, california, have an hour from here in monterrey park, where the mass shooting took place. with police initially saying that they had a barricaded suspect situation involving the white cargo ban that they thought there was somebody inside the van that might be a suspect from the shooting. and later, the county sheriff's office saying that there is no longer an operation in pursuit of an armed suspect in that particular community, and the neighborhood is safe. clearly whatever situation was happening with that van, has been resolved, whether it's been resolved because they determined that it wasn't their person, or because they discovered that who the person was in there was dead. or some other and of the situation that we don't know yet. but we do expect, it will be the next update will that from

area tonight? >> thank you, reverend sharpton, first, we know that it's an asian sooner. against the aynor asian community it doesn't rule out that it could have potentially be a hate crime we saw that at laguna woods where it was an ethnically motivated hate crime. between an asian against an asian community. however, working rate that it could also be intimate partner violence, or domestic disappear. what we know in the asian pacific islander community, regardless of what the intent as, the impact on our community is that we feel targeted, and more scared, and were traumatized. as you mentioned, this happened at a new lunar new year festival, lunar new year for many of our community is as large christmases here in the united states. and imagine if you had a shooter gunned down a christmas

celebration for festival. that's what it feels like to our community. and in monterey park, as over 60% asian, in -- the which is one of the largest asian neighborhoods in this country. certainly, our communities feeling scared. and we don't know if it's a hate crime or not. but it doesn't matter because right now the reaction and the fear and the emotions in our community is that were feeling targeted again. when you think about the context of this pandemic, where we've seen the rise in anti asian hate in our community has been scapegoated for that. we've seen so many attacks, killings. we're still feeling that fear. regardless of what actual intent of the shooter and that being. >> are you concerned that the shooting, that the shooter's identity if he is indeed found to be of asian descent, may provoke more violence against

aapi communities, that have been dealing with the rise and hate for the past few years? >> we're certainly worried about that. we're worried about copycat shooters, sometimes mass shootings lead to our ripple effect of more shootings. what we've seen, because as the news comes out, if you look at different live feeds, chats that even when we don't know what the intent of the shooter was, there's a tremendous amount of hate motivated speech happening in reaction. people are saying, good riddance for asians, and speaking and really violent and racist language against asians in response to -- we certainly don't rule out that there will be our politifact. that our asian community could be targeted. so, we're being careful as we

talk to local officials. another asian nonprofits in the community. to see what we can do to make sure our community feels safe. and make sure we have opportunities for them to heal. and really to promote the social services and support that's available to our community. making sure people know what's available, especially that's in language, and language academies and mandarin, that a lot of the community members speak. and that they're tied to culturally appropriate resources. >> i'm glad you said be careful, i remember when we had the white house anti-hate summit last year. aapi p.i. leaders, latino leaders, jewish leaders, myself, and the intensity of what you need to deal with. people don't understand in all the various that we face. of the potential of hate crimes or in fact take crimes

themselves. no word has been released by the l.a. county sheriff's department. on what kind of weapon the suspect used in the massacre. though the county sheriff said in today's press conference, that it was not a high powered assault rifle. and california does have some of the strictest gun laws in the country. still in spite of that, this happened. what more can be done in your opinion? >> we need so much more comprehensive and robust gun control laws in this country. yes, california is better than maybe the rest of the nation. i know we have protections against not allowing guns for those who have a domestic violence record, for example. but it's not enough, we need a comprehensive gun control in this country. uvalde, leave had it, we've had buffalo, we've had laguna woods, we've had this, we've had

atlanta. i don't know how many massacres we need to see. whether in our communities of color, or just in our schools, or in general for this country to finally say, we need to have a control. and get the rains are making sure guns are not so freely available to everyone. when guns are floating around so easily, these things can happen, it's too easy for mass shootings like this. it's too frequent, that mass shooting looks like this are happening. one message i have for our aapi community, is that the solution to this problem, for us, is not morgan's. and i hear that with a lot of our leaders and within communities of color. there is an important message that we continue to share. as were being targeted, we had victimized, or hurt. allowing more guns out on the

streets will be the answer. >> briefly, we're at a time. but how does the aapi community in monterey park, heal and repair after this? >> so, first, i will say that we're urging community members to reach out and get support. l.a. county, we have a system called 211, if you call that number they'll connect you to a network of asian serving social service providers. who've come forward during this rise of anti asian hate to provide legal services, like karen's asian dads, mental health, victims of crime benefits. so many other. so whether you are a direct victim, or a vicarious victim, meaning someone who still feels traumatized but what you're seeing. we encourage you to reach out, to 11, 24/7. we will also be releasing soon, within the ap local community. a list of resources that you'll

tonight, i want to share something that's heavy on my mind. this week, florida the department of education rejected and advanced placement high school course on african american studies. claiming that the curriculum lacked value and promoted a political agenda. florida's governor ron desantis has been waging war on what he calls, the wokeness in the state schools and institutions. but many teachers say that they quote in the middle of a political fight. earlier today, a -- tools, spoke with florida state senator sullivan jones. and we were told that he will announce with some of his partners, which include attorney general -- reverend hp homes. they plan to mobilize statewide

against this decision. and i've committed to come what then the next several days with that, when they designate the time for statewide rally, and speak at the rally. to erase african american studies, when we are trying to get people to understand each other. and to appreciate the worth of each other. in and of itself, is in my opinion promoting bigotry and intolerance because we're not teaching young people how to appreciate each other's history. desantis, we're not gonna let you deal with this without are confronting this issue. let me also ask you to pray for those in monterey park, and let us all remember those families, on last equal and we remembered the holiday for dr. martin luther king.
