muster the decency to get through the memorial service of one of his biggest fans. but the crowd didn't seem to mind being humiliated by their hero. and the vile display in kentucky as restaurant patrons are forced to listen to audio of the killing of breanna taylor as one of the officers involved in her death was there to speak to a group of republicans. >> we begin tonight by wishing those who celebrate a happy lunar new year. the new year began sunday kicking off more than two weeks of festivity around the globe. from china to korea, indonesia and vietnam, as well as right here in the u.s. it is a time for family, for honoring one's elders and ancestors, for fireworks and parades and elaborate meals that include longevity noodles to signify long life. for billions of people it is by far the most important and festive holiday of the year.

but the violence has shattered what should have been a celebration of life, good health, and prosperity, when a gunman opened fire inside a dance studio in monterey park california saturday night. police were dispatched 10 minutes later. >> multiple victims. gunshot wounds. >> we are at 17 right now. still trying to get a hold of a number of critical -- >> the shooter killed 10 people that night. and he wounded 10 others. it is the worst mass shooting in the modern history of los angeles county area in addition to two of the victims, three other women were killed. two in her 50s and one in her 60s. five men were killed. three in their 70s and two in their 60s. monday afternoon an additional victims succumbed to their

injuries, leaving the death toll at 11. the killer fled the scene and barged into another dance studio but was stopped when one man, brandon tsay, wrestled the gun away from the suspect who fled in a white cargo van. sunday morning, law enforcement surrounded the van in a torrance parking lot where officials said the gunmen shot himself as the officers approached the vehicle. monterey park is less than 10 miles from downtown los angeles. it has been described as america's first suburban chinatown . it has such a significant concentration of asian voters that both state and presidential candidates regularly -- there. the shooting has led to a sense of constant fear for the community. a tragedy that has hit harder given the way that asian americans have been terrorized for the last few years. in the past few weeks, a woman stabbed an 18-year-old university student while

writing a public bus. she told detectives she did it because the victim was chinese. in new york city, amanda shoved a woman, then made an anti- asian comment in an unprovoked attack new year's eve. for many, there is an acute sense of terror at a time when many americans, from black americans to the lgbtq community, feel under siege. america has been traumatized by gun violence. when you think about it, that's the point. it's how terrorism works. the stripping away of safety and psychological well-being replaced with fear of everyday life. the shattering of hopes for a new year. there is no facet of american life untouched by gun violence. sometimes you even wonder if there is a day that can go by without tragedy. we can't even bring you news of one shooting without including yet another. today, two students were killed in a shooting at a des moines's

charter school. joining me now from monterey park, california, nbc news correspondent, steve patterson. thank you for being here. we know nbc got exclusivity of the heroic acts of the young man who pulled the gun away from the shooter, but what do we know about the now deceased attacker of these two clubs? >> a lot more, joy. about 10 or 15 minutes ago there was an updated sheriff's department press release that told us a wellspring of information about the shooter and about the incidents surrounding the shooting itself and it's more important to start with what we don't know and what we weren't told which is what the primary question and focus of this investigation has to be at this point, which is, why. nothing so far on the motive. police alluded to certain things and targets that may have been insight of the ballroom behind me that the shooter may have known, but they are not making those connections at this point. they did tell us a lot about a

storch search warrant executed at the shooter's nearby home and they recovered a lot of materials related to the shooting. one of them at 308 rifle. computers. this is harrowing. this is haunting to hear. there was material inside his home that suggests he was making homemade firearms suppressors. on top of that an untold number of rounds in containers. hundreds and hundreds of rounds in this man's home. besides that, inside the van that you showed earlier, there was another gun and some clothing. police confirming at the scene of the ballroom in monterey park, 42 rounds were expelled. they found those rounds in and outside of this scene. meanwhile, police are continuing to investigate this. one of the things you are looking at in that video showing right now is the weapon that was recovered at the second scene. police confirming, they said earlier this was an assault

style pistol. it had an extended clip. it would be illegal in california. police confirming that is in fact a mac 10. known to be a very destructive weapon. illegal in the state of california. that is part of the investigation. separately our unit has confirmed a few things. evidence suggests this is a personal motive, not hate crime or terrorism. you might imagine that. with the shooter being 72 years old and known to the community, we know that at this point but they haven't gotten to the bottom of why. that is the question investigators will focus on until this wraps up. >> steve patterson, thank you. let's ring in the mayor of monterey park, henry low. thank you for being here. i want to start by asking, how is the community doing and have you talked to any of the family? >> thank you for having us on

your show. right now, there is just a lot of disbelief and a lot of hurt and a lot of shock that this awful incident happened in our community. oftentimes a shooting is thought of as something that happens elsewhere. not in your own community. it is a tragic occasion for monterey park. as for the victims, i have not had the opportunity to speak to their flick families yet. >> i know there has been a heightened sense of awareness in asian american communities throughout the country, regardless of region, because of the increased violence that we've seen against asian americans over the last three years during the covid pandemic. was monterey park subject to that type of increased

security? was there increased security posture in your local businesses going into lunar new year? >> my monterey park, like many communities with large asian populations have been relaying from anti-asian sentiment and hate because of phobia and anti- asian racism. going into lunar new year, our police department was out in full force and if you were there, at our lunar festival, you would have seen our police department that was out patrolling to make sure that the community was safe. also because we had not held the lunar new year festival in three years, because of the pandemic and so we knew there would be a large turnout.

over 100,000 attendees this weekend. >> i think we can all imagine how something like this would impact us if it happened in our neighborhood. how frightened people would be. i'm wondering if you could give us a sense of what the recovery looks like for monterey park. what are the steps being taken? is there counseling being offered for people? are people able to find a place to publicly grieve together? what are the steps being taken to try to recover? i know it's only been a couple of days. >> sure. thank you very much. we have established a crisis center at our senior center and residence and anyone who seeks counseling and assistance can get the information on our website. we have also established a memorial for those

who want to leave flowers and also a memorial has been created in front of the dance hall. i had a chance to pay a visit this afternoon and see people from the dance hall leaving flowers. i also believe that there is a community gofundme that was created to assist the victims and their families. tomorrow night we will be holding a vigil at city high hall at 5:30 p.m. for people to express their grief and gather the community to talk about and reflect about this tragic event which has all of us in disbelief and confusion about why it happened. >> indeed. we share that disbelief and are keeping monterey park in our thoughts and prayers.

citizens, like the chinese chamber of commerce, we want people to understand, you have to be safe. that's what i really want to talk about. we need to support law enforcement. for me, it's -- i believe everyone has to be professional and well trained. those are my comments. this is, once again, i believe we need to change the policy. >> i wonder how you recover a sense of safety. this attack did come from within the community and we

know it is in an atmosphere where there have been so many attacks on asian americans throughout the country and given the fact that you do represent the chamber of commerce and life does need to move forward but what are the steps to try to do that in a community where this is happening? >> of course. we always mention about safe country now. we love our country. we love america. but we need the safety. we need more support and law enforcement to support the people to work together. also the hate crimes. we need people to understand each other. for city and society. that's what i really wanted to mention. personally, myself, i respect everyone. i don't care what you do or if you are poor or rich. that's important to teaching people to learn how to respect and it doesn't matter what culture you from. >> have i lost you?

downplay the actual racial history of our country to appease those who are more like ron desantis. for many teachers, this assault on the education system is instilling fear of teaching the true history of our nation's history and even florida's racial violence as depicted in this dystopian ad from the advocacy group, equality florida. >> i have a dream. >> miss stewart? why is this stuff blocked out? >> there are some in the state who refused to back down, like marvin dunn, one of the preeminent historians of florida, who is saying, ring it in.

dunn is taking it upon himself to teach the truth, as he says, by leading statewide tours of high school students and their parents to the sites of some of the worst racial violence in florida's history. sites that some of these students say they have never heard about in their own classrooms. dunn is also one of the eight lane tiffs in a lawsuit over the stop -- law. he said if there is such a thing as a woke mob in florida, i aspire to lead it. he joins me now. professor marvin dunn is the author of a history through florida through black eyes. i've not seen this wonderful gentleman in many years. it is good to lay eyes upon you , professor dunn. >> good to be here again. great to see you. >> good to see you too. your book is called the history of florida through black eyes. it contains photos unearthed over 50 years of research

documenting lynchings against black folks in florida. you also donated a collection of 4000 photos to florida international university which i know very well. is your book, in your mind, as you understand this stop woke act, is it legal to teach your book in florida schools? >> oh no. if a teacher in florida schools was caught taking this book to school, he or she could be fired and charged with a felony. this book is not allowed in florida schools because it touches on the very things that desantis once hidden from florida students. this could not be admitted into our classroom. that is part of what we are facing in this crisis. i was going to say, i was teaching at florida university before ron desantis was born. now he is going to tell me what i can or can't teach in my

classroom? you are not my boss. you are not the boss of me. this man, when he taught school, for a brief period of time, some claimed that ron desantis talked about the war with the confederates at that time. some students claim ron desantis taught them that abortion was wrong. now he becomes governor and tells us what he describes as very rigid rules of academia. he is a hypocrite. an absolute hypocrite and what he is doing is frankly totally destroying education. i dare this man to show me one school in florida where critical race theory has been cut. one school where children feel bad about something that happened 30 years ago. where is this happening, ron?

this is all made up. it's fake and aimed at getting him to the white house. this man is running for president and using race. >> to your point, the things that they claim are their concerns, because you've already had florida's college board rejected. the african- american studies course rejected. you've had florida schools under the sort of regime of the governor come back and say, no, we promise we are not teaching critical race theories in our schools. he says they've already backed down and said that they won't do it. you actually went right at ron desantis. you are one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit that is trying to challenge the "stop woke" act. you tweeted references to your own family's history at ron desantis and said to him, this is the history of my own family. these are the things that we dealt with. collecting used books from all- white schools because they

couldn't be allowed to have new books. being on the migrant trails in the 1940s. your father not been allowed to be a cook in the navy during world war ii because he was black. have you received a response from ron desantis on the challenges you put forth about your own history? >> not a word. i wrote to ron and manny diaz asking them, what kind of things am i not allowed to teach? how am i not supposed to teach the holocaust without feeling? how am i supposed to teach slavery without feeling? how do i explain to students that someone sold out to someone else and not explain that is evil? one thing i'm being asked to do is to sterilize history. to take race out of it and act as though race wasn't a factor. slavery in florida would be taught -- some people went over for a while and then it was

over. that's it. lynchings. he is so determined to kill our history that it makes me even more determined to save it and to protect it. desantis is a bully. he is an autocrat. and he is a little guy trying to become a big guy. he is a baby trumpet and i think the people of the country will recognize that when they see what happens if he becomes president. >> i do know that manny diaz is the secretary of education in florida. he is the one who prays the colleges including two that have black presidents who put out this sort of statement of kneeling to ron desantis saying , don't worry. we won't teach anything about critical race theory in our school. i want to point out some of the things that manny diaz put out a statement objecting to.

teaching and reading bell hooks. teaching and reading kimberly crenshaw who is, because of her connection to intersectionality. teaching angela davis, a seminal figure in african- american and american history. i could go on. do you believe that because of what ron desantis is doing and his personal objection to the idea that there was racism in america and that it should be taught, do you think that will make florida students less attractive to colleges around the country and less educated? >> it should. it showed for florida students. they are going to colleges and universities that have been steeped in this history and our students are going to be lost. they will have no idea where to begin after going through the desantis education program in florida. it would be a tragedy. for our university system to be destroyed by this man. he is after tenure now.

drag? but he just says i was just doing drag for fun. how do you argue that marjorie taylor greene is not the median and mean republican at least in the house? i'm not sure if she's not the median and mean republican period. >> i think she has a very rational response for what has become an utterly irrational party. if you are watching fox news night after night you are being told that the vaccine kills you. you are being told to be afraid of history. you are being told to be afraid of m&m candies. there is virtually nothing you shouldn't be afraid of. now, tucker carlson is out there saying, why are they trying to keep nicotine away from you? there is something sinister about that. he is essentially encouraging his viewers to smoke cigarettes after encouraging them not to get the vaccine. you can understand why so many people out there are confused.

were any children there. we know there were at least to african americans and the room that were subjected to hearing the sounds, and having to -- having their meal interrupted, when they were not aware of when they first walked into the restaurant. >> just for those, we're having a little bit of a zoom issue with you -- for those who didn't, here you said there were about 70 to 80, you said, patrons and their restaurant enjoying their meal. and about 80 people at the event? >> yes, ma'am. >> okay, and so, what is the response in the community, because there were protests outside. there are protests actually going on tonight, protests at the restaurant. my understanding is, the protests that took place tonight, the really in this hour. my understanding is that this was the second choice of this group on where to hold this protest. is that true? >> yes, ma'am. initially, they were supposed to be at the bowling green country club. but as some of the pressure rose from the statement we have put out initially denouncing the event, they ended up

canceling the country club said no, we don't want to have you here for this event. so, the greek restaurant was the second choice, and that's where they had the event at the last second. >> and do we know if miss taylor's family has responded to what took place? >> not to this point, we haven't had contact with her family. but in the coming days, we hope to talk to them, as we complete our investigation of this entire event. >> you know, mattingly has blamed missed a lure's boyfriend who heard someone banging on the door, someone busted in, and he believed it was an intruder, and so he, using his right to bear arms, fired into what he thought was an intruder, hitting mr. mattingly, and his use that to essentially portray him as a criminal. and that taylor was a criminal, and to make himself seem like a hero. this group seem to agree that this person is a hero. have they responded to the naacp to explain why they're treating a police officer who killed and innocent young woman

who had done nothing -- broken no laws, why they are treating him as a hero? >> they have, and that's kind of the things that we want to find out. they're saying that they want to have an open dialogue with somebody who was there at that night of the incident. why not bring out breonna's mother? why not have other people that were there? so, we want to find out why it was important for them to have mr. mattingly, and why was it a thing, because this is something that should have a different context. and having him to be there, to promote his book, or to talk about the situation we, the search stances, we feel is very disgusting to be able to do that. >> and i can tell you, there's a reason why we're not showing any images of the book. we're not gonna try and sell off of all of this -- my last question to you, do you know of any current elected officials who attended this event, or sitting elected officials. we know that the attorney general, the chalk law enforcement officer of your state actually is the one who justified these shootings, only

appointed republican senator from arizona. in 2018, she ditched her moderate image to bear hug donald trump. and in a second failed attempt ran what was dubbed the worst campaign in america. the congresswoman, then congresswoman kyrsten sinema defeated mcsally in a nail-biter, by a little more than 55,000 votes. now, senator sinema's attack to the right and office seems to reinforce what arizona progressives tried to tell us. among the heads, thumbs down to an increase in the federal minimum wage, but thumbs up to giving gifts to wall street cronies and democrat spending bills, and opposing changes to the filibuster for voting rights registration. and sinema's choice to ditch the democratic party to become an independent sure seems like an acknowledgment of weakness ahead of potential 2024 democratic primary. her opposition to voting rights has been especially confounding to democrats since she is called the legendary john lewis,
