12:00 pm
>> everybody, i'm yasmin yasmin
12:01 pm
vossoughian, if you are sticking with, us thank you for that. we are continuing to follow the devastating global tragedy unfolding in turkey and syria right now. more than 25,000 people dead, and that number keeps rising, as rescuers are working through that rubble and breaking news, former president donald trump, preparing to get involved in fighting a subpoena for mike pence. more on that. meanwhile, the former president
12:02 pm
makes clear who he sees as his biggest threat for nomination, and it is not mike pence. the former president puts governor ron desantis a taste of what to expect if he challenges donald trump. and the house gop making it clear what to expect in the next eye seeing what will be in the next week. -- >> hunter biden's laptop >> hunter biden laptop >> hunter biden laptop >> secretary clinton regarding her use of a private email server for official business. >> they've got their eyes on that laptop, in a moment, i'm going to speak to congressman an oversight committee member jasmine crockett about her gop colleagues, also this hour, a historic super bowl matchup, the first time two black quarterbacks facing off in at the big game. i'm going to talk to doug williams, the first black quarterback to win the super bowl about what has changed in the last 35 years. it i bet it's a lot.
12:03 pm
but first, the u.s. announcing plans to send 85 million in assistance to syria to help provide shelter, food, medicine, and other desperately needed aid, u.s. black hawk allocators also supporting airlift operations in an airbase in turkey, transporting rescue personnel who are most affected and difficult to access. a lot of report from turkey in a moment, but first, some new reporting from sky news reporter, alex crawford, from inside syria. i'm >> the people here are saying this is a real tragedy because it could have been all so different if they had been given extra specialists, more sophisticated equipment, with which to try and locate these people. remember, some have already been taken out of here alive, but now the chances of finding anyone else alive are extremely remote. >> they are exhausted, but they go on. few have escaped the agony of loss either through the war or
12:04 pm
now the earthquake them. they know the importance for finding the bodies to grieve. have you found anything? no, is the constant answer. even the body of a loved one's a's comfort in this part of syria, where steve comfort is a scarcity. >> want to bring in nbc news correspondent, gabe gutierrez, who is standing by for us as well. obviously, we are seeing the devastating situation just across the border in syria there with alex crawford on the ground there. gabe, you are in turkey, you and i spoke the last hour as there was a moment in which there was silence because, at another site, there was a possibility of finding someone alive. in the last 30 minutes or so since we last spoke bring us up to date, what is happening on the ground right now? >> hey there, yasmin, yeah.
12:05 pm
this is one site that is mostly turned into a recovery mission at this point. they do not expect to find any more survivors at the site but as i mentioned in our last hour, just on the block there is actually two more collapsed buildings, and in those sites, they -- at least one of them, they think that they may have heard a sound or at least are trying to listen for a sound. at this when you are looking at right now in these live pictures, these are search teams that are looking through this building. they had found, over the last several days, 12 bought -- 14 bodies, 12 survivors, and they are looking for more of people that may have been killed inside of that building, sadly, just within the last few minutes they pulled out yet another body. i must tell, you yasmin, it is difficult to stand out here. just across the road from us, there are family members that
12:06 pm
are keeping vigil. they are burning fires here, trying to keep warm in the cold temperatures, and they are waiting for any sort of word on, either good or bad news, about what happened to their loved ones. again, this is a six storey apartment building that you are looking at. and this is the scene that was playing out over, and over, again. all across eastern turkey. i mentioned my colleague from sky news who made it over the border into syria, the civil defense in syria actually said yesterday that the mission there had changed to a recovery mission, but here in turkey, it is a different story. they have been finding people in the rubble, throughout today. remarkably, more than 135 hours after the initial quake, they are still finding people, families -- entire families. a family of five was found. a young child was found today. so it is really remarkable that the amount of people that are still being found, even though the death toll has climbed
12:07 pm
above 25,000. now, yasmin, earlier, very quickly we went to a mountain village, and i mention the last hour, and there is this scramble for supplies. this need for humanitarian aid here in turkey, but people are wanting to have insulation for their homes or what is left of their homes, and need a place to stay. some are living in trailers, living in their cars, in these early cold temperatures. this is a mountain village called out to log, about a half hour from where i am, and they say that they feel some of them have been waiting for days for any type of aid. >> some of these more rural communities feel forgotten even though all of this international aid is coming into this area. but, here, in turkey, remarkably, yasmin, at the search and rescue operation still continues, now entering its sixth day after the initial quake, yasmin. >> just a heartbreaking tragedy to watch as you see. these pictures of tragedy and these miraculous pictures as well, as survivors are still being found there, gabe
12:08 pm
gutierrez, for us, thank you. coming, up by the, way later this hour, i'm going to be joined by john morrison, with fairfax county urban search and rescue, a virginia task force currently deployed in turkey to assist in around the clock search for earthquake victims. we are following this breaking news this hour, everybody, on the doj special counsel subpoena of mike pence. nbc news is that reporting that attorneys for donald trump are expected to fight the subpoena on executive privilege grounds, trump's attorneys have not commented on this matter as of yet. we want to bring in nbc's -- who is following this from the white house. give us the latest of what you are hearing, monica. >> so, remember, the subpoenaed that we were able to report out just in the last couple of days as it relates to former vice president pence in the matter of january 6th, the attack on the capitol, and this is under the purview of the special counsel of jack smith at the department of justice, who, remember, is conducting a couple of investigations into former president trump. this is one of them, the other
12:09 pm
one relates to his handling of classified documents. so we understand the subpoena to the former vice president is specifically related to the january 6th inquiries, so the fact that he had some conversations with former president trump clearly in those days leading up to the january 6th attack, specifically we know because the president talked about it publicly that he wanted it at the time. he wanted his vice president to join him in trying to resist in overturning the legitimate result of the 2020 election, so it is possible that the special counsel here would like to talk to the former vice president about some of those things. but now we are learning, today, according to a source who is aware of the trump legal team discussions, that the former presidents attorneys to plan to fight that subpoena based on what they are saying would be executive privilege. but they are a lot of legal questions about how that could be implemented now given the executive privilege is usually something used by the current sitting president, who, of course, is not donald trump, it is current president joe biden.
12:10 pm
so some questions about how this could work, but it is not something totally unexpected. because when you see subpoenas like this, we have seen in the past, mr. trump try to use this as a legal strategy. so that is something that they will likely be doing, but again we don't know when the subpoena could possibly take place, whether mr. pence -- what he plans to do about it and what mr. trump's attorneys fighting it would really mean practically for the special counsel as he tries to gather more information about this, yasmin. >> we are going to continue to follow this, monica alba, thank you. we want to turn now from the white house to capitol hill. where this is how house republicans are wielding their slim majority. i >> you can consider your speech canceled during my time because you canceled my. >> you silenced me from communicating with the american people over a freaking joke. now, who the hell do you think that you are? >> they tried to play the role of god as they interfered with a natural ride of the people to a free and fair election.
12:11 pm
>> so that was just a taste of gop members on the oversight committee this week. i -- saying allegations that the company repressed conservative speech, but democrats on the committee provide facts for their colleagues, pointing out that it was actually the trump white house that pushed twitter to remove the chrissy teigen tweet, critical of the president, and a whistleblower told the committee that twitter even changed their rules to allow the former president to say just about anything, including launching racist attacks on a squat of progressive democratic congresswomen. i want to bring in congresswoman, jasmine crockett, member of the house oversight committee. congresswoman, thanks for joining us on this. we appreciate it. do you think this hearing backfired on the republican majority? >> absolutely. and i look forward to serving them a little bit more of this, all session long. throughout the entire 118th, they were completely unprepared,
12:12 pm
and honestly, they were outgunned to use terminology that they may understand. listen, we were ready for them, we knew where they were going to try to go, we knew that this was all about personal vendettas. this is not how we are supposed to be using the committee on oversight, this is not efficient in the government at all. we are not here to serve their personal interests, we are here to serve the people that elected us. and i think that they found out that if they are going to try to come with some more nonsense, they better come a bit a little bit more prepared. >> congresswoman, there is a couple things i want to get to as we are talking about the agenda for the republican majority. we are also talking about axing to subcommittees, the civil rights and civil liberties of committees, and then the oversight committees environmental panel as well. i know that you introduced an amendment that would actually reinstate this environmental subcommittee, katie porter saying this. what we are going to have to do
12:13 pm
is find ways to connect with republicans to get them to hold hearings on these issues. do you think you can make that happen? >> i don't. we can try, but as you've seen, where their priorities lie. why are we talking about a new york post link from over two years ago. that was supposedly what was so frustrating about twitter that we had to have an entire hearing. they don't seemingly want to accept facts, they don't seemingly want to accept that the twice impeached former president lost. they don't seemingly want to move on and progress this country. so having a real conversation about things that matter, such as climate change, especially as we see what just happened in turkey, as you were just reporting on, especially in a state like texas, where we are continually enduring ridiculous floods, and ridiculous freezes. we know that the city of austin
12:14 pm
has been under a freeze and our grid cannot stand it. >> and they have been enduring that for the last couple of weeks, so we need to have real conversations but they don't want to do that. they want more red meat that they can sling when they go back and have to deal with their next primary. >> is there any way, in your estimation, that you can actually affect change in the next two years, or are you just going to be hitting your head up against a wall really, and waiting it out? >> you know, i don't think that we are necessarily going to hit our heads up against a wall, i think that it is important for us to point out how ridiculous they are and how childish they are and how much they really don't care. and, honestly, they are full of nothing but rhetoric. when they are on the campaign trail, they tell you that they're going to focus on the economy, they are telling the are going to focus on inflation, and they tell you that they want to be fiscally responsible, and they tell you that they are the biggest waste of federal dollars that we have ever seen.
12:15 pm
and they don't have those real conversations, instead, we take votes on resolutions about socialism. instead, we know that they want to go after social security. now, obviously, our president delivered a checkmate on them. we will see how they respond, but we know that they want to go after social security, and medicated medicare. they don't want to seemingly care about the things that we as americans, whether you are a democrat, republican, rural, or urban, they don't care about the same things that we care about, and we are going to make it clear to all americans, that we are here to do the work of the people as democrats. >> congresswoman i, want to ask you what is happening in your state right now about what is happening in your state right now that could affect really women across the entire country. this lawsuit in texas seeking to pull this abortion drug, that now accounts for the majority of abortions happening across this country. i mean anytime around, you the president of a narrow pro-choice america, in some ways this is a back door ban on abortion. what is your reaction to this?
12:16 pm
>> yeah, i think it is a front door ban. texas has not been shy about it and its intentions, unfortunately. we know that texas is going to continue to move the needle, we know that we have the most restrictive abortion ban in the country as it is. we also know that texas is going another step further right now, and what they want to do is they even want to restrict a woman's ability to move throughout or out of the state of texas, so that they can't seek the access that they need. it is important that we push back on a federal level, it is important that we stand up and talk about when there is federal jurisdiction, as far as i'm concerned, we are looking at anything that involves interstate commerce, that is federal territory. so texas needs to back up and have their job, and have the federal government to the federal, stuff the same thing with people being able to move freely throughout this country. that is a federal issue.
12:17 pm
so, it will be interesting to see what we get, because we know that these sports have been stacked with some judges that are simply not equipped to follow the law. and so, we will see. but, as far as i am concerned, this is a federal issue, there is not a federal ban, and therefore, people in texas should have the access that they can. >> congresswoman jasmine crockett, thank you. still ahead, everybody, the latest inside turkey as survivors are still being pulled from the rubble days after the devastating earthquake. plus, more on the breaking news, donald trump, ready to jump in the fight of a subpoena to his former vice president, and tomorrow's matchups between the chiefs and the eagles, is already making history before it even began. or begins, i should say. i will talk to former nfl quarterback and super bowl mvp, doug williams, coming up, we will be right back. the sinuses.

we have been reporting on the breaking news in the investigation of trump's role on the january 6th attack. attorneys for trump are now expected to fight the special counsel subpoena of former vice president mike pence on executive privilege grounds. the trump campaign has not responded to requests for comment as of yet, we want to bring in tara palmieri, senior political correspondent for fox news, tara, it is good to talk to. any indication, any of your reporting telling you that both pence and trump's teams have been talking amidst this subpoena and now this breaking news that trump's attorneys are going to fight it? >> i don't have any indication that they are talking, but i could assume that if there was any pressure put on pence to not testify, it could be considered witness tampering. and i have to assume that there has to be some sort of firewall between them. of course, trump will say that this is executive privilege, whatever conversation i have with my vice president is covered by that. he is use that for outside aides like steve bannon and cory --
12:31 pm
he has extended executive privilege over he's wanted, but i think there is probably a legal sensitivity in that ultimately, pence, who is already exerted executive privilege, will probably try and do that again. >> what do we know about their relationship, both pence and trump? >> i know that they've spoken at least three times since they -- since pence and trump left office on january 20th, 2021. it is a tense relationship, especially as mike pence decides if he is going to run for reelection -- if he is going to run for the presidency against donald trump. they were once allies and now they are competitors, that is a whole new dynamic. at the same time, it is impossible for mike pence to win the nomination without winning over some of the presidents -- former president donald trump's supporters, the maga base, and everything i have been told from people on the ground and from what i have seen is that they really do not like mike pence right now, and any sort
12:32 pm
of way in which he continues to alienate them would hurt his own presidential ambitions. so this isn't just about shipping someone who is a competitor in a presidential primary, it is also about keeping president trump's large fan base happy. it is the only way for him to win a primary. >> it seems like the former president knows that, because it seems like he is more worried about ron desantis than he is about his former vice president. just this week, he accused ron desantis of being a groomer. governor desantis responding with this, let's listen. >> i spent my time delivering results for the people of florida, and fighting against joe biden. that is how i spent my time. i don't spend my time trying to smear of the republicans.
12:33 pm
so, there is this kind of behind the scenes conversation happening as to whether or not ron desantis has it in him to go up against a donald trump. and it was the same conversation that we had in the, 17 person spread back in 2015 as we looked at the republican primary in wondered who could go against donald trump and candidate -- in hearing his response there, what do you make of it. >> you know, it's interesting, even before groomer gate or trump accusing him of being a question of whether not ron desantis could really punch back and attacked donald trump. none of the candidates in 2016 could really land a punch against him, and ron desantis has been pretty untested. he ran was really unknown when he ran for congress, that he ran against andrew gillum for the governor ship and it wasn't really a very intense race, and
12:34 pm
even then, he was pretty flat-footed in a lot of the debates. i went back and watched some of them. he didn't have a very tough contest against charlie chris, in fact when charlie capricious basically suggested that he may not serve his entire run for president, he was disgusted that that would even come up. he just doesn't seem to have the counter crush. and that is why he is often compared to scott walker, who was seen as the hope of the republican party, as the person, the great governor, who have done all these great things that could end up being the presidential nominee, but ended up not really panning out and just kind of fizzling out. so i think there is a lot of concern that ron desantis is a lot of hype in there is just not a lot or enough experience on the national stage, and debating, handling these kind of attacks, trump is going to go low. he is going to go lower than that. that is just a preview of what's to come. so i think it is understandable that every step and every move that desantis is making is being sidestepped and we are
12:35 pm
assuming that it is going to get worse, and if that is his response which, by the way, he didn't actually deny the allegation against him either. >> which was an opportunity to do that. no i wasn't a teacher, drinking underage with students, but i think it is a very basic thing that people would want to know. and i think also his i am not going to smear other republicans, okay, then what do you want to do when you get the debate stage? what do you want to do when you get to the primaries? you can't play this without -- you can't play this game with donald trump, maybe if it was politics the way that it was, more a bit civil, but if the hopes of the republican party are running thing on rhonda scent's ability to punch back of donald trump, he just showed this first time enough that he just might not have it. >> we won't know till we know. tara palmieri, thank you, good talking to you. >> coming up, a new development in a disturbing case, a team committing suicide after a beating by a fellow students

are alive. they don't do, that they have the search going with the bubble file. it isn't one dog at a time, these dogs are specifically trained to smell a human scent. live humans, and and they will run the file but if they alert to a specific location, they will have a second dog to see they have alerts in the same location. if we, do we bring in the technical search capabilities, it will be auditory, so they will listen in the building using a specific tool pump and then our search cameras where we can put a camera down into either crevices or drill a hole into the concrete, trying to get into the spaces. once we do, that we've located the victims. we will go straight to the concrete or around the concrete, whatever is safest. structural -- to ensure the building is appropriate to get it as fast as we can, in the state and then we will work to get to that victim which may take a short period of time or up to a whole day. >> what is it like john when amidst all of this tragedy, you find somebody alive?
12:49 pm
what is a like to be there to see that happen? >> it is heartwarming. the whole community comes together, that's one of the great things that is being here. the warmth that the turkish people have had for us in the wealth than they are very resilient people giving these widespread -- and when we have specifically rescued alive victim on this mission yet, we are still very optimistic with that possibility there, working around the clock to do. that when you do rescue a survival from an earthquake from a building, it is one of the greatest feelings that you can have. >> john morrison, so thankful that you and your team are there helping the turkish people out amidst this unspeakable tragedy. continue to do what you do. thank you. >> thank you. still ahead everybody, why representation matters and the nfl as the super bowl marks the first head to head matchup between the black quarterbacks. i will talk to doug williams, the first black quarterback to

12:55 pm
first for some, it is pretty cool. i know it will be a good one. >> so to understand how significant this really is, you need to go back 35 years to super bowl 22. that is when washington quarterback, doug williams overcame all odds and became the first ever black quarterback to not only reach the super bowl, but to win it and take home and vp honors. creating a legacy that is going to stand forever and doug williams is joining us now. it is so cool to talk to you doc, thank you so much for joining us today. we appreciate it ahead of super bowl sunday of course. when you found out, of course. when he found out that shoes were facing off against the eagles, two black quarterbacks, on the field, super bowl sunday. what was your reaction? >> oh man, i can't even explain it because you know they came all over me. i got a little emotional. i had water in my, eyes not because two guys where it
12:56 pm
should have been there a long time ago. really i thought about the guys that didn't have an opportunity before me and i felt for those guys but at the same time, what was about to happen once historical. you have to pull for those guys. >> you think about the numbers, right we heard it right there i believe and i am not sure if it is necessarily accurate. seven black quarterbacks only making it to the super bowl. why has it taken so long? >> well i think you know, we ought to look back at the fact that 35 years since i have won the super bowl, and now 35 years later, we have two black quarterbacks in here. i think the bottom line was there are so many guys that had the ability to play this game that the knock at the opportunity and was denied. when you think about, that that's a possibility that i probably would have been the first and all of those guys who deserved the opportunity to play. the fact that is when it happened, and what we already we have to feel pretty good where we are but we still have
12:57 pm
a lot more work to do. i think that's the most important part. >> doug, how did you become the first? how did you shut out the noise both in tampa bay, and then on to washington. making it to the super bowl, getting mvp. outed you shut it all out amid what was going on in the country at the time and make it to that point in your life and career? >> while you know what you look at these two, guys what they do have to do is have to be tough mentally. you also be tough physically but at the end of the day, you can't listen to a lot of the people who really don't want you to be in that position. you can't listen to what they say and i think these are what these two guys just, and patrick has done for the last five years. for jaylen to do it this, year say it's one thing he is mature to the point where he realized most important people to him at this particular time is his teammates and his coaches. i think that's what you have to. do you have to lock so many other things, down enough to be strong to handle whatever goes out there that you have nothing to do with. they are doing everything to try and keep you down. >> you are a part of history
12:58 pm
dog. what do you remember from that day? winning the super bowl, what was it like for you? >> oh you know it was one of those days, especially after the game when i am walking off the field with my helmet in the air, i had so many things going through my mind. thinking about the people who had negative comments about what i couldn't do. what a black quarterback can't do, can't lead, can't think and all of that. you have to remember all of that. i look at that from the standpoint that you know, i traveled the road that was less traveled. i had to go through a lot of hurdles and things like that but at the end of the, day i felt like i was on the mountain top. no matter what happened yesterday, tomorrow, and then i was out there president. the most important thing. >> okay, let's talk to game if we can for a moment. who are you rooting for? and what predictions are you making? >> well that will be tough because it's hard to root for any one of these guys because at the end of the day, it's so
12:59 pm
great to see these guys play in the fact that they are making history. it wouldn't be fair for me to pick anybody, to be honest with you. the way i look at, it i feel like i have already won as far as i'm concerned because the fact that we are here, we are about to make history for these two guys playing the game and hopefully, somebody will come out and i wish they could pile the game in that will not happen. somebody can go and win it, at the end of the day i hope that both hard each other and say we did it. >> yes, doug williams, such an honor to speak with you today. we are so appreciative, you took the time to join us and that you are a major part of history. we are all going to be watching that game tomorrow and thinking about this conversation that you and i had today. thank you for that. >> thank you for having me. >> all right, there is already going to be plenty on the minds of the kelsey family this weekend, philadelphia's jason and kansas city chavez for the first ever pair of brothers to face off against each other in a super bowl. but get this, at jason's wife, kelsey's 38 weeks pregnant with a baby girl.

you better believe she is not planning on missing the game. in fact, kylie is going to be bringing to obi doctors to state farm stadium just in case. now earlier this, week the couple said that they are still pretty undecided on a name but if she ever arrives over the weekend, if she arrives over the weekend i should say, they might have to name her super but at the very least cover the initials of s b and honor of her super timing. that wraps it up for me, i am yasmin vossoughian. i will be back in the chair tomorrow, 2 pm eastern. simone starts right now. t now. greetings everyone, you are watching symone. we are following new developments on the high altitude object. the u.s. fighter jet shot down over the lasting airspace. they are still very few details about the object or as potential threat to u.s. security. we are talking to a military expert about what happens next. and former vice presiden
