hey everybody. good afternoon. i'm yasmin decision. a new look for alex murdaugh as he begins the consecutive life sentences for killing his wife and son. also, right now the most extreme republicans in the party gathering for the annual cpac conference. what we are hearing already is pretty disturbing. >> when i said, i don't know it sort of weird that pennsylvania managed to elect a vegetable,

restaurant, in an effort that has gone far beyond what either of them imagined. i will speak to kids in martin and devoun take gardiner ahead today, as well. we begin though, with that first president photo of convicted murderer alec murdaugh looking almost unrecognizable. his mugshot showing him wearing a yellow president jumpsuit and donning a shaved head. it is part of the prison intake system. and, it was taken just hours after murdaugh was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for the murders of his son and wife. want to go straight to priscilla thompson with more on the convicted killer's new reality ahead. >> well, alex murdaugh spent his first night of that life sentence here at the kirkland reception and evaluation center. he is expected to remain here for about 45 days, according to the department of corrections, as they evaluate his mental health. they will also be giving him a medical test and an education assessment. and the results of which will be used to determine which
11:03 am
maximum security prison he will ultimately end up with. of course, officials also taking into consideration his sentence and that crime of murder which he was convicted of. now murdaugh maintains that he is innocent. we heard him saying that in court yesterday he continues to say that. and, for now no family or friends will be allowed in to visit him except of course for his attorney. they already said that they do intend to appeal this conviction. they have said that they plan to do that based on the fact that the financial crimes were allowed into this case. it's something that they say jurors never should have heard about. but, we are also hearing from some of those jurors in the days since this verdict was handed down. one of them saying that it was not the financial crimes that led them to you convict murdaugh, but rather that snapchat video that was shot by murdaugh's late son paul in which you hear murdaugh in the background of that video after the elder murdaugh had told
11:04 am
officials that he had not been anywhere near that kennel and feed area when this murder happened. and so jurors are saying that that was really the key piece of evidence that allowed them to make that decision. they are also saying that they deliberated for around 45 minutes before making that decision. so that is some of the state at play as murdaugh we can start life sentence. and of course, is set to face additional charges and head to court for his financial crimes as well. back to you. >> all right, thank you to priscilla thompson for that. want to bring in msnbc legal analyst danny solace. we disservice a talk about how quickly it is that they came to this decision. from adjournment to when they said it there was a decision it was about three hours. although it seems like what happened in that room took all of about 45 minutes. let's take a bit of a listen to one of the jurors that was interviewed, and then we will talk. >> we it was to not guilty.
11:05 am
one not sure. and nine guilty. >> what was your vote? >> guilty. >> we started deliberating, going through the evidence. everybody was pretty much talking. and, about 45 minutes later after all are deliberating, we figured it out. >> jenny, what do you make of how quick that turnaround was, and also how you had teachers walk in there with not guilty on their minds and were able to be flipped within 45 minutes. >> first, i remember this i love this rare look inside a jury room because i don't ever get to go in. their lawyers never get to go. in most of the time we get kicked off of jury duty, so this is always exciting to find it what they talk about. and i'm not surprised here. i'm not surprised that there were two holdouts for not
11:06 am
guilty. and i've been really holdouts because they were open to being persuaded. in talking to people, i found a lot of people who generally thought that the theory that murdaugh killed his wife and son to get sympathy and avoid prosecution for financial fraud, they found that hard to swallow. and that was a misstep by the state because it was the state that introduce that evidence. it was overkill by them. and it almost cost them this conviction. so i am not surprised that there were one or two holdouts. i'm also not surprised that they were eventually convinced by their fellow jurors. and if it was that number, and that is what i thought it might be given that period of time that they took, i expect that there would be a minority that had to be convinced and that was open to being convinced. and they were. they got the unanimity niche he relatively quickly. >> and then there is whatever put them over the edge. we are priscilla dock about this already. it was the snapchat video. you and i talked about this a lot of the last week. how do you explain away the
11:07 am
snapchat video and the different takes from the prosecution and the defense on the start of video and why he lied about being there in the first place. . you know zone attorneys craig melvin, they didn't really know how to explain that away. take a listen. >> how damning was the lie about the kennel video? >> damning. >> extremely. >> we were talking about, jim and i were getting prepared for five months ago and we were looking for a way to get around what we called it the lie. every time we referred to it was the lie. i had to get around it, how do you explain it? and apparently didn't. >> it is also really interesting to me to go inside the minds of a defense attorney. and i know you are living in the mind of a defense attorney. because that is what you embody. but, nonetheless, hearing even
11:08 am
from them that they really didn't know how to deal with this. had to explain away the fact that he lied. they kind of knew it may very well sink them. >> oh, i've been there yasmin. defense attorneys don't get a pick their facts. prosecutors put their facts, the ones they take to an indictment and edge grandeur. but defense attorneys, we take the fact that we are given. and they're not always good. and this is a classic example of some bad backs that you had to contend with. why this took us into the twilight zone is that the states evidence put the lie to it murdaugh to long forsman. so his fix for that was taking the stand and telling the jury, oh, my explanation is i lied. so that was always gonna be damaging. what do you have been convicted, we have not taking the stand? i think. so people tend to be that forever. but i think the evidence was there and they had plenty of evidence of his dishonesty without him taking the stand. and essentially establishing that he is in fact dishonest. >> everybody, just of all is

11:13 am
and censor conservatives off of their platform. but, look, in this report democrats are saying we had access to so far the three witnesses. this committee interviewed them behind closed doors. this is three of thousands of whistleblowers that jordan claims to have. and they say that these folks, not only didn't establish this like the georgia is trying to prove, but they actually peddled conspiracy theories about january 6th, about covid, about even the holocaust and nazism. so, a lot of things to examine here and breakdown. but this committee so far, plotting ahead with their next moves regardless. >> julia tsirkin for us. thank. you by the way, we are going to die people or into the republicans weaponization committee with congressman an oversight committee member russia christina. that is coming up on msnbc. you don't want to miss that conversation. okay, four final days at cpac, well underway just outside of washington. we are looking at live pictures here. former brazilian president

11:21 am
in several republican controlled states, including some states where abortion is fully legal. it is all due to this pressure from gop state attorney generals, backed by opponents of abortion rights. this would have an obvious major impact, on millions of women, as abortion pills have become increasingly crucial, especially since the overturn of roe. they now account for more than half of all abortion procedures in this country. joining me that was melissa fowler, chief program officer of the national abortion federation. melissa, thank you for joining us. i have to say, this story, to meet, when it popped up, is totally shocking. it's shocking mostly because i don't understand how walgreens would stop selling mifepristone in the states in which abortion is legal, just by threats by the state attorney general. i don't understand how they have any legal ground to stand on. >> well, we're definitely
11:22 am
seeing a backlash to this decision. people are outraged that walgreens has caved to pressure from a small group of antiabortion politicians. this reaction and pat last is not surprising. we know, according to recent polling, that nearly two thirds of voters think pharmacies like walgreens and cvs should fill prescriptions for the medications that are used in medication abortion care. that same amount of voters think abortion should be legal in this country. inflatable tickle climates, hard to imagine getting two thirds of voters to agree on anything, and they do agree on this issue. we heard that message loud and clear in the midterm elections, when abortion was on the ballots in states across the country, voters sent an overwhelming message. it doesn't seem like these politicians have gotten it. they are not giving up overturning roe v. wade and putting the faith aside. they are working every angle they can to ban all abortion, even in the places and states that have proactively protected it. >> so, that two major questions
11:23 am
out of that are how is this going to affect millions of women across this country, right? that banning of this abortion pill? and being distributed from walgreens, specifically, for now, by the way? what can groups like yours do you about it? >> so, medication abortion is still available. we're working with our providers across the country. walgreens and cvs were preparing to be able to fill those prescriptions, so right, now people can still access care abortion providers across the country, where abortion is safe and legal, and while many groups are protesting, calling for boycotts, for people who want to fight back, we need to think about the bigger picture and the bigger issues of abortion access, and we now live in a country where millions of people can't access the care they need and tough to travel to other states. so, for people who want to do something, i would encourage them to reach out to a local abortion provider and see how they could be helpful, patient
11:24 am
assistance funds likely one of the national abortion hotline, which would lead directly to helping people travel and overcome barriers like this to access care. >> so, with all this, though, we are waiting this text decision that could feasibly ban mifepristone across all 50 states. i know and anti abortion group sued the fda, and we're still awaiting this decision, if it comes through. what, that? >> we have been working with providers across the country to be ready. there are other safe, effective regiments to providing medication a proportion that had been frightened around the world, and our providers will continue to provide that care where abortion remains illegal. so, it's not the end of medication abortion, but it is important to recognize this as and effort that is part of a bigger strategy. to really banned abortion nationwide. >> i just got to say, i traveled with 20 women from texas to new mexico after the six-week abortion ban was put into place.
11:25 am
this is before the overturn of roe. i saw firsthand women receiving mifepristone at this new mexico and abortion clinic. it was that easy for them to take, especially women below 12 weeks, one woman, i believe, was at nine weeks of pregnancy, and took this abortion pill. so, you think about the access, really, that this provides, especially for those disenfranchised young women that's our black and brown in this country, that don't have other means to seek out abortion services. >> absolutely. we know medication abortion accounts for more than half the procedures today. people should be able to choose the option that makes the most sense for their life, that fits with their schedule, the care that they want. we know people often to choose medication abortion, and we're doing everything we can to keep the athens available option. it is safe and effective, and it's been provided for decades. it should remain fda approved. >> melissa fowler, thank you.

federal investigators now widening their probe into human smugglers, bringing migrant children and 13 into america to work dangerous jobs at the country's meatpacking plants. and bcc julie ames lee has been leading this nbc news investigation that's gotten more and more disturbing. >> it seems the problem of migrant children working in slaughterhouses across the country is even bigger than we first thought. we learn that last fall, labor investigators found nearly two dozen children working in a plant, cleaning slaughter houses in the middle of the night, in grand island, nebraska. then the labor department said there were actually 102 children working in certain different sites across eight states. now, what we're learning through to u.s. officials, is that dhs and the fbi are now investigating how migrant children wound up working in slaughterhouses for multiple companies across the country. the nets keeps getting wider.

these investigators are looking at how these children got to these jobs in the first place. they are following a paper trail, trying to determine how migrant children may have gotten the i.d.s to a passes american adults to walk into these plants in the first place. and if anyone is pressuring them to do so. investigators have spoken to, say, patterns in the past have indicated and other things that look like this, where you can have a smuggler bring a child to the united states, charge a parent a fee, and also charge them more in order to get the child's job. then, the child is stuck having to pay back the family and the smuggler, who brought them there. it's a really complicated system. it's a complicated task that these investigators have taken on. it's a giant web. right now, what we understand is the companies themselves are not at the heart of this investigation. it's not clear that they are targets or would be defendants in this investigation. rather, they are looking at what could be a human smuggling enterprise that has exploited these children and brought them into these incredibly dangerous jobs.
