this country right now, of all the issues that keep me up a night, gun violence is near th top of my list as the mother of two young children, it's hard to think o a more horrifying fact in al of american life than this the leading cause of death among children in the united states is guns, guns we've seen some progress o this issue in recent years

last year, president biden signed a bipartisan bill tha produced some pretty significant reforms. it represented the mos progress on this issue i decades. it didn't go nearly far as far as gun safety advocates, mothers like me and even president biden had wanted just last week, the presiden signed an executive order on gun safety it promotes the safe storage o firearms and increases the number of background checks. the president had act alon because a republican house isn't going to touch anythin on gun safety with a ten foo pole they're way too scared of th nra and specifically, the nra' money. here's the thing, though some states don't need republicans to bring about change take michigan, for example for the first time in 40 years democrats are in charge of the entire state government in michigan the governor's mansion, th legislature and they are using that power to tackle a lot o issues including gun violence right now, michigan democrat are trying to push through a

11 bill gun safety package tha includes policies on saf storage, universal backgroun checks and a red flag measures the momentum to get somethin meaningful done is stronge than ever. especially on the heels of the mass shooting just last mont at michigan state university this week, i went to michiga and i sat down in one of the school's most well-known alumni governor gretchen whitmer. we talked about gun violence the threats on her life, abortion rights and even som presidential politics. >> we're sitting here with the backdrop of michigan state university, or pushing to ge gun reform legislation through because three students wer killed just a few weeks ag here in michigan do you think there would still have been the will to do tha in the legislature had tha tragedy not happened >> we have new legislature and i think that's part of why we've been able to accomplis so much in this first 108. this comes when -- we ran the tables here i michigan it was not something anyon expected in the midterm afte all the challenges we had.
