11:00 am
ask your doctor about switching to dovato. >> hey everybody, good
11:01 am
afternoon to you. i'm yasmin vossoughian on a very big saturday afternoon. we are following some major breaking news this hour out of memphis. 24 people are dead or as tornadoes ripped through the states. we are live on the ground, a deadly scene in pennsylvania after an explosion at a chocolate factory. we are also following the developments in the strikes and counterstrikes between the u.s. and iranian-backed syria. and, we are just hours away from $1 trump rally in texas. that comes as a potential
11:02 am
indictment hangs over his head and it is happening in a place that has become sacred ground for some of the worst extremists in the republican party, more on that. we want to begin in a state of emergency. the tornado break that has killed over 24 people. teams are working to look for survivors across multiple counties devastated. the town is getting particularly hard. dozens of buildings collapsed there. biden releasing a statement saying that he and the first lady are praying for those who have lost loved ones and also offering support for recovery efforts. we're gonna have a live report from nbc in just a moment. but i do want to start with jared brown, a leader who is a members are working to assist with recovery efforts. thank you for joining us on this. we appreciate it. i know you and other folks that you work with are incredibly busy right about now.
11:03 am
it is a very terrible time for mississippi after what happened, the cleanup rescue and recovery efforts there. give us a sense of what is happening, what you've been seeing, when you team has been experiencing so far and the goal that lies ahead. >> absolutely, well jim rubicon, we've been monitoring this that formed last night. we were in contact with the state emergency management to see where the lead is needed at the moment. they did send an official request out for team rubicon to come. as you see, even as we approach the town here, there is a welcome sign. the welcome sign to the city. from here, it just keeps getting worse as you go in the town. still no power, linemen are working hard. trying to get that back up and running, it is 12 hours past. it is just beginning of the worst day. >> how do you take that in?
11:04 am
how do you take a day one, who knows how long this is going to take. what are the first steps? >> our first steps, we will send out recon team and they will come out and look at all the damage areas where this tornado touches down. we will see your team rubicon can come in and plug in our capabilities, make the most impact for these communities. we are starting that right now with emergency managers, the city officials to see where the lead is and where we can plug in the best to make the most impact. we are also seeing with debris management in the early stage to help emergency responders go to the citizens who are needing help. a lot of road blockage, we are doing everything that we can to try to get to that next step, it is pretty impossible to start recovering from this disaster. >> by that i mean, for folks
11:05 am
that survived this thing but who don't have anywhere to go, obviously talk about electricity going out. the aftermath of this tornado, is there in which they can seek safety, clean water and food as they shelter in place until next steps are there for the? >> at this moment, i do not have any information on that. but as we are conducting this interview, a red cross truck just passed by. a lot of times in these disasters, red cross will set up a shelter for individuals that need a safe place to go, food, water, clothes like that. all of that should be established. i will tell citizens if they're watching, this watcher media, all of that information will be coming out today. >> jared, give us a sense of the disaster you've been seeing
11:06 am
on the ground. you have painted a picture limit for us since we started. you've been doing this for a couple of years now. we are used to work on on the ground, -- how do you compare this to other disaster is that you've worked on in the past? >> the past five have years of disasters i've been going on to, it reminds me a lot of the tornado that came through tennessee about three years ago. it demolished a small town called cookeville. it reminds me of mayfield a little bit in kentucky. that was a little bit over a year ago. it is very devastating and no one was expecting all this to come in in a matter of minutes, to wake up to what you see today. >> just quickly, you know what type of heads up people have there, the warning they had
11:07 am
there that this was heading towards them and they need to shelter in place or evacuate? >> i don't know the warning alert that went out here, i know the systems that we were monitoring last night. warnings were going out extremely well ahead of what you would normally see the tornado. but on the ground in this town, i don't know exactly when that would take place. >> jared, we appreciate the work that you are doing on the ground there. i know a lot of folks are needing your help right now amidst all of that devastation. obviously, priority number one is to find people safe and sound after what they have dealt with over the last 10:12 hours. i'm glad to let you go sir. get back to the work that you need to do. thank you for giving us the time. we appreciate it. i want to go now to our own thompson who is on the ground there for us as well. i believe in silver city. priscilla, take us there,
11:08 am
would've even seeing? >> yasmin, this is a snapshot of what we were seeing which is debris. the heavy machinery has been brought in to clear some of the road system that debris is going back to the grass. when we got here earlier, it was not just about everywhere. this debris has now been moving off. their trees that have been completely uprooted. of course if you go a little bit further down the road, what you will see in rolling fork is just houses that have been completely caved in. there are government buildings like the police department, the library, these public spaces that communities gather in and people visit that i've just had all their windows completely blown out. that is a snapshot of what we've been seeing here as people have been coming back to these communities to survey the damage. those people in their homes last night when this happened.
11:09 am
i spoke to one woman who said that she and her husband were in the living room. they were hearing the loud sounds of these tornadoes. and then the whole back half of their house actually completely blew away much of the roof. you can see a little bit of that right here. we spoke to her son on the phone with his parents. there was a moment where they said, we will call you back. he talked about the fear in that moment of not knowing what was happening, if they were going to be okay, and thankfully they are all okay. i spoke to another man who is living in his apartment back here in a similar scenario. he looked at the window, he saw what he described as two tornadoes coming towards the apartment homes. everybody went into their apartment. he hid in a closet, he put his family in a bathtub. when they came out, just about everything around them was gone. one of the neighbors tragically lost his life amid all of this.
11:10 am
it doesn't or nato's believed to have run through this area. the large one covering about 80 miles of destruction along the way as it moves through. we are hearing debris that were up in the air, as high as 30 to 35,000 feet. you can imagine the strength of those tornadoes. national weather service will be here and is on site survey that damage, trying to get the exact extent. we are beginning to see shelters opening up, lots of big trucks on the highways carrying pallets of water, try to get folks the support they need as they were here, trying to clean up. we know that fema is also beginning to set up just up the road in rolling fork where for the brunt of the damage, so many people trying to figure what is happening next and how to begin to pick up the pieces here, he has been. >> hey priscilla, i asked the team just before you and i spoke, i wonder if you have an
11:11 am
answer. what type of warning where residents, whatever warning were they given before these tornadoes hit that they could've sought safety? >> yeah so, i've spoken to a couple of people and they didn't mention any of this, although i imagine those went out. a lot people i spoke to said, we saw the news, we thought there's coverage about this. we have never seen anything like this happen before. i think there is a part of them that believed that this was going to hit them and certainly it was not going to do all this damage. aspect one man and he said, oh yeah, back in 2009 or something there was a two new that came. i hid in the freezer of a safe way and that was bad. but this is the worst that he's ever seen. he never imagined that anything like this would happen here. i think there's some shock and disbelief, i don't think people believe that this is going to happen. most people that i've spoken to did not evacuate. they were here when this
11:12 am
happened. they saw coming and then they began to realize, this is a serious situation here. >> all right pollutants in, as always, we thank you. we are gonna continue to follow the story throughout the hour. i'm also gonna be heading. the show will be live there tomorrow as well. you don't want to miss that as we walk through the devastation you're seeing on the ground there. let's talk about syria for a moment if we can. syria is conforming to more attacks overnight. iran is targeting u.s. and coalition forces. the news coming after president joe biden issued a warning to iran that tax on american troops was retribution. foreign correspondent molly hunter is following all of this. walk us through some of the developments here, the latest practices. as well as's of course the presidents message. >> that's right, it's been a pretty fast moving 48 hours
11:13 am
since the original attack that killed one u.s. contractor on thursday night. the report we learned about, we do have new reporting on friday from our colleague from a u.s. defense official at a u.s. official telling nbc news that there was two more attacks on friday. oh walk you through what we know about that. the first friday night rocket in northeastern syria. we understand that at least one american service member was injured in that attack. it less than an hour later, a complete given area, u.s. insulation in the area. three one-way unmanned drones attack that area. two were shot down according to u.s. official and one damaged building. there is not been additional u.s. retaliation. u.s. president biden spoke about this yesterday. u.s. does not emphasize this. but be prepared to protect our

people. >> the u.s. has been extremely clear about this that the different of defense agrees that the iranian revolutionary guard -- they've been very clear that they do not want to escalate a wider conflict with iran right now. we also have a statement from pro-iranian -- they say that they have quote, a long arm to respond to any further u.s. strikes. it was down, it was under minutes. whether or not that allowed for that drone to reach a populated area on the base on thursday. the other thing, just an update on the servicemen who have been wounded on friday. two were treated near that military base, three others yasmin,. the service member who was

11:17 am
january 6th, he said peacefully and patriotically, the media turned it around and try to make it like what it wasn't. we have known since day one that it was a setup. i think it's crazy. how many times have they tried to go after that. every time, it is nothing. i'll be honest with you, i think they actually do it. there is no thing. >> we are hours away from that rally. we'll soon find out if former president trump sees it as a megaphone for his grievances about those investigations. and he has been, as you mentioned, it's hard to acknowledge the location selection for this. 30 years ago, there was a deadly standoff between federal agents and a cult that espoused pretty strong anti government views. the trump campaign, when asked about this, told nbc news that selection was nearly the fact

donald trump lied to him and told him that everything that has been turned over so that he falsely wrote an affidavit that was given to the government that proves obstruction of the investigation by donald trump. that is a clear cut case to make. it goes beyond just the fact that he has refused to return classified documents and classified documents, removal from the white house is a crime. it is one that is not prosecuted unless there is something else, in this case the something else is obstruction of justice and the deliberate determination that he would not return them when he was asked for them, when he was told that the government knew that he had them. i think it could be very, very definitely horrible for donald trump. >> any issues with claiming this crime fraud exception on the part of the doj?

that based on information that i have been provided, she didn't do the search and so she didn't claim that she had personal knowledge. these are things that we have to watch for and see how it plays out. either way, it is not a good look for donald trump and quickly could lead to a very clear cut case against him for obstruction. >> talk about the significance of this reporting, ordering corcoran to hand over a number of records to what was described as trump's alleged scheme. invoices, transcriptions, personal audio recordings, and also now hearing the fact that chief of staff mark meadows, his former running mate miller. they're having to now testify. what does all this mean? in a stage of this investigation. >> well, it means a lot of things. first of all, it means that the courts are sticking to the rule of law.
11:35 am
it has been, since watergate when the executive privilege was held to not to apply and a subpoena for the recordings of the white house had to be a bag because it could have been in furtherance of a crime. crime fraud has always applied to executive privilege and certainly to attorney-client privilege. these are top level, close people to donald trump you have the information about his motivation and his knowledge. and his intent. these are all very important witnesses. i can't think of anything more important than this reference to audio in the notice for the testimony by cochrane. it is unclear whether the voice notes that he made where it is him saying what he heard from trump or whether it's an actual recording of him talking to trump, either way, it is good.

because while donald trump has gone low, this is lower. >> for the problem is is that our trump has dragged on the whole process. there is a legal term called obstruction of justice. the prosecution should act swiftly against it. the good people, we have career politicians who are running, but other people are going to stay out of the race because they don't want to be affected by trump's antics. donald trump, there is no low that you can go to it on trump, he will just drag you continually to the bottom. but then it is up to the republican parties to reject that kind of behavior. we need to rally them. the person who obviously is the uncontested rival of trump's rhonda santa's. his goal right now is one, he wants to make sure that he wins florida, try to focus on that.
