11:00 am
>> hey everybody. good afternoon to you. i'm yasmin vossoughian. coming to you live from rolling fork mississippi. this is a town that is grappling with tremendous grief and loss today. we can tornadoes. ripping through this and surrounding areas. taking a look at live drone shots right now over the area behind me. a town just completely flatten. tearing homes for their family foundation. sending cars flying. we -- leaving entire families searching through the rubble for signs of life and scraps of
11:01 am
their family history. so many individuals in this community wanted to keep it together -- thankful they're alive. 48 hours after this devastating tornado. recognizing so much has been lost in that time. brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and children. all trying to pick up the pieces here after a tornado would change their lives within minutes. short time ago, i had a very emotional interview with the -- who lost her sister dolores in that tornado. >> you live in a town. you experienced that tornado. what was it like for you? what happened? >> it was scary. it was very scary. something i never experience my entire life.
11:02 am
it was -- unexpected. shocking. without warning. nothing i would wish upon anybody. nothing i want to ever experience again. devastating. >> where did you and your husband seek safety in the town? >> we went from one end of our mobile home to the other and. we hid in our smallest bathroom on the floor. >> when you are on the floor in the bathroom, what are you hearing, what are you feeling? . >> a lot of rumbling and shaking. we could hear our mobile home just coming apart. we just -- the wind was blowing. everything was shattering. >> it was fast. >> it was very fast.
11:03 am
like less than five or four minutes. it was just that fast. >> one moment, you are sitting in your house. >> one moment, sitting on the side of the bed. the next moment, we were on the floor. pray. praying. until it was over with. then we walked out of the bathroom. i don't even realize that -- open the door, we lucked our, we couldn't see anything. we walked back inside our living room, walked back to the door. morning had come --
11:04 am
-- he ran out to our porch. random in the rain. we were just calling her name. he came back, he was shouting her name. he went back again. he walked, he walked. he found her laying there are. he raised her, he lifted her from the ground. on her kv!=u1i1burárj'q). he called her name again. he picked her back up. then he shakur again. --
11:05 am
in the pouring rain, he said he or she is, i knew she was gone. i just lost it. >> i was on the phone with her. i had called it when my cousins and called and said check on your family. i called her and she was screaming and -- they had just found her than. she was screaming and then i got -- i'm trying to call my sister and tell her. she's like what happened -- i'm trying to get it out. i started losing her. everything is right now for us is --
11:06 am
yesterday, we were all here together. i felt that i went back to my home. i felt like i was in a dream. i kept waiting to wake up. it's not a dream. it's reality for us now. it's hard. it's really hard. >> when i got, news -- works in public education. how is your morning? i texted dolores. my husband and i heard the news. tornado.
11:07 am
i texted again -- she always answers my tax. and then i texted and said -- she said now, we can find lori. e i shacked maryland in shortly after that she called and she said they found her. and i said did she make it? she didn't make it. it was over it >> she did make it. a family today relaying from the last two days. eight siblings now seven with dolores ghana. her whole wiped out. her has been injured as well. this community wanting to pick up the pieces. incredible to see that in person as you're driving into rolling fork. two miles out. nothing was touched. as we get closer and closer to this community. this entire area wipes out.
11:08 am
completely leveled. people without their belongings without their homes. without their sister. they are today. authorities arriving here this afternoon. the governor the. secretary of homeland security. along with other lawmakers addressing this community and this cleanup effort. let's take a listen to that press conference a little bit earlier. >> what we've seen over the last 36 hours and mississippi. on the one hand, has been heartbreaking to see the lostant of a station of these communities. and on the other hand, has been inspiring and gives me greater reason for optimism and quite frankly makes me proud to be a mississippian. >> the president has directed us to be here. to assist the people of mississippi. to be here on an enduring basis. not just the response but through the recovery as. well we are mindful of the fact that will take time but we are

11:10 am
was headed to this area. a lot of folks say they didn't get enough warning. it wasn't. they didn't have enough time to repair our. for what was to come. did we not know who is gonna be this bad? >> this is a difficulty. the severity and frequency of extreme weather events has increased so much over the past number of years. this part of the country is used to weather. but you never know the gravity of it until regrettably it hits. it's especially difficult when an event like this hits the evening. >> we've seen a more and more. that's what is so troubling. we're seeing weather events like this more and more was not just a couple of homes. it is entire communities wiped out. >> it doesn't hurt communities wiped out. as you so poignantly said. family members, loved ones. friends, neighbors lost. it is indeed why we need to build capacity. we need to build capabilities.
11:11 am
to prevent this destruction from occurring. we have to build a greater resilience as well as a quick response and recovery process. which is why we are here. >> let's talk about the building in a moment. i want to address how this communities gonna get help. one of the sisters that i spoke to you of the woman who lost her life. one of the 26 people who lost their lives. it's where they're gonna get the intention they need in this community. 75% black american community. this is somewhat of an impoverished community as well. they feel like they're gonna be forgotten in a couple of days as we move our trucks out in something else happens in washington. what are you gonna say to them? how do you help? >> i would say not to worry that we are only here today and tomorrow and not a week a month a year from now. president has directed this is a matter of principle. that the federal government supports people in need. until they fully recover.
11:12 am
that is indeed what we in the department of homeland security would our federal partners will ensure. that we are here for the long haul. >> how did these folks get federal assistance? no electricity. when donald block had to move to her sister's place. how does she even know what to do where, to go, had to get that help? >> we dress that at different levels. the local level, the state level, and the federal level. we have a website. they're gonna go on to fema. fema.gov website. and look for the particular page that has the assistance. we also have an 800 number that is on that website as well. if people did not have connectivity. if people did not have cell phone coverage. we understand that look around us. it is no surprise. we have mobile assistance themes on site. who are already here and we'll be speaking with members of the community and their loved ones.
11:13 am
>> let's go to rebuilding for a moment. infrastructure. this is about infrastructure and how we rebuild in this new -- with these morris of your weather event happening. the building that has stood in this area as we kind of take a quick look around. brick homes. older buildings on the block there. entire brick homes. i'm not an engineer. i don't know that sustains 200 mile an hour per winds. what is the plan going forward when you rebuild a community like this so these homes are not crushed and decimated that they have been. >> it is about designing the buildings. that we replace. to which stand about the weather events of last year or two years ago. about to really withstand the weather that we are now confronting. you make a very important point. local units -- have to take a look at their building codes. and ask themselves are those truly designed to address an

event like this. i was in mayfield kentucky. around christmas time in 2021. there was a safe room that had been designed for people in an extreme weather event could go and congregate and be safe and that safe room was decimated as well. the weather events of today are far more powerful than they were years ago. >> who's gonna pay for that rebuild. who's gonna pay for that? >> we have as i think you know the governor asked for federal assistance and the president in lightning speed accepted that request. moved on it favorably. this president is dedicated to communities regardless of their socioeconomic conditions. core principle of this administration's equity. that are outstretched hand of relief will reach those in need. >> does the president have a plan to visit mississippi? >> that, i don't know. the present request that i be here today to provide exactly
