we played some of the sound in his reaction pennsylvania to the current case he is getting close to it, but he is not jumping in headfirst on this. what do you think of his response over? >> well, i think so far he's kind of playing the same game. he is letting trump take these negative headlines his problem is that, clearly the republican base is a rallying around donald trump because he has gotten him to believe that this is an unfair witch hunt that creates a problem for ron desantis because his numbers have tanks in the past couple of months especially if donald trump has attacked him he also faces the potential of trump taking up all the oxygen in the room, basically and because of that, the gop has a whole faces this potential nightmare scenario o trump, who could easily win hi primary. but then also potentiall easily lose the genera election in 2024 >> but, is that a simila strategy as you were sayin before to president biden bu for.

reactions to donald trump' indictment this week fro lawmakers, critics, and allies as well. two members of trump's very ow family but as we inch closer to the primaries and get into ful swing, the only reactions that really matter will be those of the voters going forward nbc's marissa parra has been speaking to the voters i washington d.c.. good to see you, marissa what types of reactions at the scene? >> hey, richard. so, before we get to that. i want to get to a poll that was actually done this week. i think it is a pretty it is pretty telling to what you are going to see and hear from the people we spoke to so, in this poll we had
12:56 pm
chance to see roughly 60% of those polled from quinnipiac who said that unindicted shoul disqualify former presiden trump from running for president in 2024. and then roughly 40% said it should not and among that, we see the overwhelming majority of democrats said he should b disqualified, and then the majority of those who said h shouldn't were gop voters. so, what we are seeing here is that really, his indictment is not changing opinions. but the opinions on th indictment are so strong so, take a listen to the peopl we spoke to this morning >> i mean, it is historic. that is definitely one thing t say about it but, i think for the last what four or five years, it has bee incredibly frustrating that we have gotten a sense that the president is above the law which should not be the case >> consequentially it may no come out to that much. i think having to see this through, especially with the former president, it's actuall putting towards action towards
12:57 pm
some things towards any former president, really shows that w want to keep people accountabl even if it is not going to amount to much >> do you think you are goin to vote for him next year? >> yes, definitely >> now, remember who we ar talking about here this is what people seem t indicate still, the front-runner fo republican contenders for 2024 and so we are also talking about someone who has been i the political field for quit some time now. there has been a lot that ha happened between january 6th and then just this pas election to begin with there are still people out there who believe that forme president donald trump won thi past election. that there was widesprea election fraud, and they still would stand behind him now so, some indictments are reall not going to change majo peanuts on that. those who have strong opinions against him aren't changing as a result of these charges. so, really richard more or less no surprises here that both sides seem to be remain firmly entrenched i their opinions and camps here.
12:58 pm
>> yeah, or a. so we have three other cases that are still suing so those numbers will go up an down as we see what happens fo the former president thank you so much. let's go now to capitol hill and those who have been smokin out and not. for instance, the top senate mitch mcconnell let's go t charlie circuit for more o that and, julie, when we think abou this, what can you tell us about mitch connell at the moment how is this how, and he is not necessarily been very receiver us about the progress of thi indictment in new york city. >> yeah, and look, he is a ver tactical politician. up here, when he doesn't wan to say something he will jus ignore reporters so, his silence here is also deafening in a way and i am told that he likely won't say anything until thi indictment is unsealed, unti these charges are brought to light. and in part, it is because h is a very contentiou relationship with the former president. he has been the subject of the former presidents barrages o name-calling and so forth. and, so he is going to keep hi cards close and his powder dry
12:59 pm
on this one. there is also a handful of other republicans, namely thos who voted to convict the forme president during the secon impeachment trial after januar 6th, who are also not saying much they want this case to pla out. but then on the flip side, the majority of republicans, especially in the house, are just lining up behind th former president mr. trump has been able to coalesce all of the republicans around him for the most part. even those who aren't hi biggest fans, per se but are uniting around the fac that they see this investigation, this indictment in new york, as political. if you see a series of tweet on your screen for some of his most hearted supporters, including speaker mccarthy who instructed three house chair to look into an invest and investigate and centrally th investigators in new york. chairman jim jordan, oversight chairman john corman, chairman brian steele traded letter back and forth with alvin bragg, saying that the investigation, the indictment is solely political. but then you have democrats of course across the aisle, who
1:00 pm
are saying that this investigation play out no one is above the law. not even a former president. not even a former president to by the, way is running for president in two years so, a lot going on here. a lot to see, and watch, and happen but these buildings and cultur and before the next two week for the easter recess. so we will be pressing lawmakers, because it isn' going to go away anytime soon. >> 15 seconds. so, mcconnell, very similar to biden in terms of no responding is this generational, is thi about experience veterans? >> i mean, it could be the former and the latter. they both are very different positions and implications for why they're staying silent here obviously with biden no wanting to sound political i any way. but, mcconnell very tactical he doesn't need to go on the offense now until he sees more of what the charges are. and we see julie tsirkin there for us in capitol hill thank you so much julie, tha wraps it up for me this hour i'm richard louis in for yasmi vossoughian. yes men will be back tomorrow pm eastern so stick around for that simone those starts right now.
