12:02 pm
of donald trump. plus chilling surveillance video, released and th stabbing of a tech executive the latest on that case in the live report coming up as well. we begin though once more with the major developments o access to abortion medication. two major rulings from two federal judges have left the future of mifepristone, th most common medication used an abortions and jeopardy the first ruling came from a judge in texas who argue tha the fda violated safet concerns when approving th pill 20 years ago, two decades ago. the second ruling coming les than an hour from a federa judge in washington state wh ordered the fda to keep th medication available and the 1 states plus the district of columbi that filed suit against decision want to bring in nbc sasha who has been following it for us and if you can dasha walk us through the latest development in all of this and the fallout we are seeing? >> well let's be clear her yasmin, what we are talkin about here is national concern
12:03 pm
we are not talking about a ruling that escape to texas. what this judge is talking about will impact, if th ruling stands not just texas but every state in the unite states, including those states like new york, california that have robust protections from abortion and this is why thi has been such a hotly watched, controversial case here is the lay of the land. the fda was sued in this cas in texas by a group of antiabortion organizations and doctors that claim that the fd did not evaluate the safety of the struggle claiming that it' endangering women and girls wh take it. the fda says this has been o the market for more than two decades, more than 5 million women according to the fda hav safely taken this drug since i was approved with only 2 deaths reported. the judge however in this case
12:04 pm
did side with the plaintiffs and he suspended the fda's approval of the drug it's as though that 2000 approval never happened bu what he also did was put a sta on his own ruling here, giving the government seven days to take that ruling to a higher court to seek emergency relief in this case so for seven, days we will wai and watch and see what happens essentially we don't know what the next steps are with this medication this is going to sow a whole lot of chaos, confusion an concern for those abortion providers and for women seekin abortion care right now. the other twist in the story i that washington case you mentioned or another federal judge issued a ruling that i contradicts that texas judge telling the fda that they must maintain access to this very same drug and the 17 state plus washington, d.c. that filed that lawsuit so those 17 states are now
12:05 pm
under contradicting guidance it is very likely that this is going to the supreme court the big question is though wha happens to access to this drug in the meantime, that is wha we don't know and that is what a major concern to those who are providing this medicatio and of course, democrati lawmakers, big names within th party who are pro abortion rights have come out ver strongly the biden administration saying in a statement that if this rulin were to stem, there would be virtually no prescriptio approved by the fda that would be safe from these kinds o political, ideological attacks saying that the vice president harris and i will continue t lead the fight to protect woman's right to an abortion and the first part of th statement yasmin, presiden biden makes a really important point here not only is this concern for women when it come to abortion rights but this is also a concern because it does
