>> greetings, everyone you are watching symone. they're coming up on what is a pivotal week for the lawmakers expelled from the tennesse state house. all eyes are watching to see i local officials will vote to reinstate them i caught up with the democrati leaders of the state legislato -- for their take on how we got t this point in our democracy, and while former president donald trump is having a goo old time at ufc fights, americ is waiting to see what is next with the felony charges in manhattan and many investigations into the former president. we are talking to his former fixer, michael cohen plus, in the regroup, ryan goslyn is filling with the o why he could not say no to the new barbie movie that is symone sanders-townsend, and i have something to say.

♪ ♪ ♪ if there is anything tha recent events in tennessee and other states have taught us, i should be that state legislatures are critical fo our democracy. i mean, it is where america' policy is made and if we don't know who you're stat representatives are, you shoul get to know them because the are determining the future state houses create policies whose impact can reach beyond state lines and influenc entire regions, affectin peoples pocketbooks, education 's abilities to make decisions about their own bodies and virtually every facet of lif you can think of beyond laws alone, how you state legislature's run has direct impact on you as well i mean, look at tennessee. more than 136,000 tennesseeans woke up on friday morning with a no representation in their own state house. that's because the republica majority expelled of the two

youngest black male legislators, representatives justin pearson and justin jones, saying the violated house decorum rules all for demanding that going t school should not be a death sentence the nashville metro council is set to vote tomorrow night o whether to reinstate representative jones this egregious push to us by the tennessee three has forced conversations among democrat about whether the current ways of approaching opposition ar growing outdated in a ne political environment. recently traveled to nashville and spoke to the tennessee three in the first joint interview since the expulsio votes. we discussed this very issue take a listen. >> the truth is, we cannot continue to operate in a ver old way of thinking in a ver new moment in tennis i american history it's very similar to what we tell people who are republican who talk about the immutabilit about the second amendment we don't live in 1776 where we need a militia you have to have a reality

check on what these rules, wha these laws mean in this presen moment, and to our colleague in the state house, we do no live in the air of the 1950' or 1960s, or 19 hundreds, we have to live in this moment. we have to operate in this moment and act in this moment. >> what would you like the current members of the democratic caucus in the state house to do? >> we have to be honest abou the culture on capitol hill. that it is much more comfortable to conform >> the capitol hill he i talking about is in tennessee, in nashville but it's not just tennessee. from florida to mississippi to texas, republicans are using their legislative powers t marginalize black participatio in government. i recently spoke with th democratic leadership from bot chambers of the tennessee stat legislature. representative -

representative pierson representative johnson come ou of the advocacy work this is who they are at the moment, i think the feel these voices were not being heard. i felt - they felt like it was a good cause, this was similarly to what john lewis did, having to sit out on the floor they needed to do something. and they did they took to the floor >> did you all agree with that cause? >> we definitely agree with it because. >> let's talk about the -- we are sitting here toda because three members of the tennessee state house engage in what i would call civil disobedience in the well of th house. >> a few years back, democrats walked off the house floor together >> is that in violation of house rules? >> no, but one member was pu off of a committee and w didn't agree with it collectively, we decided t walk off the house floor which then broke the quorum required

they couldn't do busines without us we have disobeyed civilly, right? we've done it in a manner that stopped business >> i've got my ear to th streets all across the country and as a young person who ha regularly had to pull my chair as a senator, at every table i have sat at, i understand, sometimes, what happens when you've got young people pullin the chairs up and saying, we'v got to do it like this you've got people who've bee here a minute saying, hold o now, we've been here before. and that could create some friction i'm hearing that there was friction, somebody tell me if am wrong >> i always say, you know, i said it yesterday on the house floor in the washington chambe it's not the water that gets the clothes clean, it's th agitation. agitation is a good thing. technically speaking for lik five seconds they technicall broke a house rule and that is disobedience did it arise, rise up to

expulsion? and that is really the point this was a minor, mino infraction in my humbl opinion. it's the opportunity, they are opportunists and they pounce on it. the republicans in the house they doubled down. >> to chairman mckenzie's poin and to answer your question, simone, we all proceed as we see fit. we all have our own tactics. i remember a member, he told u sometimes you need folks t kick in the door and you nee other folks to come to the table and negotiate. >> that's right. >> we can't be critical of our colleagues for how they choose to have their voices heard they are firmly generation - they come from that culture of we are going to have our voice heard right now. and they try to go through the normal system and they wer silenced when you silence the voices of the people, they will find a way to be heard. >> that's right. >> that's what those numbers did. is it different from how i a heard? yes. is it any less effective is it any less important

as it relates to guns in tennessee. >> we have five pieces o legislation we introduce focusing on red flag laws. focusing on assault weapons, high magazine cartridges and things like that we are - i will kick it back to leade camper - we have open dialogue, i do, with the senate speaker, lieutenant governor and th governor's office. if we are going to do something, the democratic party stand ready and willing to help. i will get over to karen >> on the night, the day w came in after the shooting, th majority leader came to my des and said, let's communicate, i want to do something, let's do something. okay, good as the speaker was leaving, he stopped by my desk and said, i'm open to us doing something great. we had legislation drafted

voters sent a very clear message. they turn out in record number to elect liberal judge janet protasiewicz all the way to the wisconsin supreme court. the judges double digit victor shifts control of that court t the left for the first time in 15 years the change comes at a critical time in cases about a woman' right to make decisions abou her own body and extreme gerrymandering will likely com before the justices. at the same time, though, special election just gave the republicans a supermajority in the wisconsin state senate they now have the power to impeach judge protasiewicz i they choose. i visited wisconsin righ before november's midter elections and i spoke with democratic legislators who wer facing a very real threat to democracy there because of hopeless gerrymandered maps. back then, i asked how the felt about their chances o ever breaking out of the minority here's what one stat representative told me

the election of judge jane really is a sea change in th state of wisconsin republicans have rigged th rules and, in many ways, isolated themselves, insulated themselves from the will of th people we have an incredibl opportunity, going forward, to move into offense in wisconsin and to challenge a number of laws on the books we believe are unconstitutional, accordin to our state constitution. those include, of course, th 1849 criminal abortion ban and our extremely gerrymandere legislative maps >> so i think the lega challenges are faced i wisconsin right now, but are you concerned about the threat to impeach now justice janet protasiewicz, what will you do if republicans try their han at that? >> of course it is a challenge right? we have, in the state senate two thirds majority fo republicans. this both means that they ca

overturn vetoes by governo tony evers, and they could attempt to impeach elected officials. thankfully, if they did impeac an elected official on the supreme court, governor ever would be able to appoint, replacement. i don't think that's a path we will see them take right now as we have seen in wisconsin and around the country especially in tennessee as o late, republicans have bee willing to go to extreme lengths to continue to hol power and continue to suppress the will of the people >> let us stay on that, leader neubauer i've been making this case, was just in tennessee, i was i nashville, i spoke with th tennessee three and th democratic leadership of the house there. and they made this case that this is happening across the south, and i agree but there is a real assault on our democracy, and attack on

women, frankly, across the country. it's happening in stat legislatures do you think that -- i think that the folks i wisconsin are unique in that they have had all thes elections and are tuning int what is happening in the state legislature. and you think folks ar fatigued, if you will, in your state? do you think they will keep th fight up >> that's a really goo question i will say, it has been hard t be a democrat in wisconsin when the rules are so rigged that democrats at the statewid level are getting about 50% of the vote in every election and we are getting about a third o these seats in every electio for the state legislature, you know you have a problem. it's really difficult fo people to continue to engage when they see their vote is no equal based on where they live in the state of wisconsin. but, because of this electio tuesday, i'm seeing an incredible sense of optimism from people in wisconsin it's not just democrats.

it's people who believe that gerrymandering is wrong. it's people who believe that every voter should have th ability to cast their vote and have it counted. i'm excited about that opportunity we have here i will say that i think we are going to see the same thing in tennessee. now is knocking on doors for election, but when m colleagues were knocking o doors, we heard a lot abou issues we heard a lot about democracy i don't think that voters ar going to forget and that the gop majority in the stat legislature in tennessee attempted to override and duly elected legislators, right of course it's not lost on u that the two legislators who were expelled were black legislators who represen cities i think there is going to be a incredible movement in tennessee that's going to hold their gop accountable there, just like we are seeing in wisconsin. >> spoken like a good millenni elected official, wisconsi
