>> i try not to be alarmist on the show, but every now an then there is good reason to b alarmed. on friday, night there was a new assault on women's right in this country. because a federal judge in amarillo, texas, issued ruling that made it through th -- 23 year approval of the drug mifepristone mifepristone is one of the two drugs commonly used in medical abortions. the man responsible for that ruling's matthew case merrick. he has made no secret of his strong opposition to a - back in college, he wrote this in a school newspaper th democratic party's ability t condone the federall sanctioned eradication o innocent human life is indicative of the mora ambivalence under guarding thi party. he was talking about moral ambivalence back in college. after working for a number o conservative causes, he even served as a trustee on the

board of anti abortion organizations. it's pretty safe to say that restricting reproductive freedom, limiting abortion rights, it's all been the focu of his career to date. the thing is that it is hi latest ruling stands, millions of people, millions of women across the country will be impacted because more than half of al abortions are medical abortions, using this to pill regimen tha includes mifepristone. even in some key states wher abortion is legal, this ruling may mean that women may no longer go to their pharmacy to get the abortion pill. they would need to go to g directly to a provider the problem with that is tha as of now only 36 states eve have legal abortion provider and many of those are alread overwhelmed by the influx of patients coming from other states where abortion is now illegal. that all means that patients may have to wait weeks o months for an appointment. patient seeking an abortion, patients seeking consultatio with a doctor about that in short, this is all going to dramatically cut access fo

women. but the impact is also far mor reaching for the medical community. this has no medical background whatsoever, his ruling has scrapped what rulings that - say for decades. this has never happened before a court has never revoked fd approval of a drug on ground like this. what if a judge has a personal issue with the use of stem cells are the components of cancer drug? can they also overrule the medical community in those cases as well? if they, do what to people who need those drugs do? right now across the country pro-choice governors are tryin to figure out what exactly the have the power to do it's not the ruling was a huge shock, but their options are limited. some states may take steps t extend access to mifepriston all, the other drug in the pro-abortion drug regiment that guy can be taken by itsel to safely end a pregnancy. it is done that way in europ and other parts of the world it's also long been considered both less effective and more

unquestionably a five alar fire for abortion access for millions of women across the country. you, senator, have bee sounding the alarm over access to mifepristone for months how does this impact thi ruling compared to dobbs i your view, in terms of the impact on women? >> it's a continuation, jen. it is what you said, we ar alarmists and we should be but it started way back when whe they started putting these far-right federalist judges on the bench for this very reason listen, i come from nevada, am a state that's a prou pro-choice state, two thirds o the voters here, two third voted to allow and codify ro v. wade. they really respective women's right to choose. and that is democrats, that' republicans, that's no partisans, it's men, it's women. i can tell you just in the las two years, as i was goin around the state talking about my reelection, this was an

issue for so many people they saw what was happening, this erosion of women's rights in this country when it come to the right to choose reproductive freedom rights, right? that, to me, this has been a path that far-right extremis republican started when they started stacking the supreme court, stacking these benche with federalist judges now we are seeing th repercussions. whip is so crazy about all this, jen, and you know this, and th repeal of roe v. wade, which i what their ultimate goal was the ruling in there said, let' move it to the states. >> yeah. >> let's give this back to the states and the elected officials. it's a state rights issue. my state is a proud pro choice state. this decision by thi right-wing judge will have a impact on whether we can provide essential care, and th safe and effective care that women need when it comes t medicated abortions. it's unprecedented >> it is unprecedented again, it's worth repeating, a

judge has never overruled th fda on these grounds there are some members o congress have suggested that president biden and othe leaders should ignore th ruling i certainly understand the sentiment. but do you think that is a viable path forward? >> no. we can't ignore the ruling i believe in the rule of law again, i'm in nevada, i am one of the 17 states you jus talked about that has part o that ruling in washington that is protecting the right to the access to this medicated abortion, mifepristone it is important that we let it play out in the courts but w continue to fight in the courts this isn't a call to action fo everyone whether it's in the cour system, whether it's when we g to the vote, whether it' makingsure that our electe representatives, particularl those far-right electe republicans who are making thi decision on our behalf, an they are listening to th american public. because, in nevada, two thirds of the voters support th

woman's right to choose. -- here is what i know. this is the concerning, i think, for all of us to pay tension that's why it's important that we see the next step this is a concerted effort they've had to really erode an take back women's rights i this country this is about our freedom. i talk to people in nevada this is about a women's righ to choose, the freedom t access besides that medication we need when they need it. i would never impose my rights and beliefs on a woman i couldn't, i don't know what' it's like to walk in their shoes. for a woman to make thes decisions, she should have all the available information an medication and access an science and doctors and make those decisions that are important for her. what these right-wing judges and others who are making thes decisions for us think it's th representatives who should mak these decisions and take awa this right for women it is starting with the repeal of roe v. wade now they are taking away key

key drags women need with thei doctors to make thes decisions. it's not just about abortion it's when there is a miscarriage. the next up is contraception going after women's rights whe it comes to our reproductive freedom and the need for contraception. this is a concerted effort tha we've been playing across th country and we have to b vigilant i will say this this, jen, the good news is what we saw i wisconsin, what we saw by th voters in wisconsin, the voter in kansas, and the voters in michigan i don't understand why these elected republicans don't ge that this is such an emotional personal issue for individuals that's why you see voter coming out and saying, no, you can't take this away from us >> it does seem, as you said, majority of people in nevada democrats, republicans independents support a woman's right to choose.

how does that all feel to you? >> we have to remember tha this started because of tragedy in nashville 39-year-olds were killed, thre adults at the covenant schoo in nashville, and the tennesse state legislature, a republica majority did nothing they said nothing. in the wake of that terrible incident my colleagues and i go into th well of the house to advance this issue about the need fo an end of gun violence, and to have a stop listening to the nra more than listening to our people, leading to our expulsion. myself, and representative jones. and the expulsion for senato johnson. we're in a terrible an terrifying time as it relate to democracy, and as it relate to the silencing of voices, wh just want to see gun control >> they tried to silence you that's exactly what they wer trying to do by expelling you. but instead, they give you a huge megaphone they say you're going to kee fighting, what does that mean?

shift in the zeitgeist i america against gun extremism. that's pretty powerful's for somebody that has been doing this for a long time do you think that we're seeing that kind of breakthrough? what are you feeling on th ground >> i believe this movement t end gun violence is grown. i believe that the energ you're seeing from young kids, to teenagers, young adults, an saying the status quo is not working, and the status quo ha only lead to consistent an persistent harm in our communities. we are not going to take peopl who have been positions of power for a very long time wielding it abusing thei authority to propagate the nra and to propagate gun lobbyists or the voices and the ideas, and the opinions o perspectives of children and parents that want to make sure their kids go home after the go to school, but also peopl that live in communities lik mine, where they hold high school classmate was murdere by gun violence. you don't want to live in that reality. there has to be something to change, and i believe that thi is the moment that's going t happen in america, and i
