issues could energiz democratic voters, and what is at stake we just finished talking about janet protasiewicz who is when flip the wisconsin supreme court to the left, she has bee vocal voter pro-choice values, and her win will likely root lead to a reversal of th states antiquated abortion ban also this week, a huge win for progressives in chicago, democrat brandon johnston beat his moderate contender pau vallas in that race. johnson, a former educator and organizer with the chicago teachers union campaign on issues such as affordabl housing, and reproductiv rights now, the alarm bells are ringing loud and clear the gop's liabilities have bee exposed, according to politico and the wall street journa called this week a five alar warning for republicans. now, houses for timing, if trump appointed judge an suspended has suspended th longtime approval of the abortion pill mifepristone, he is govern the government a wee to appeal his decision, but if his goes into effect it woul

curtail access nationwide. i can only imagine republicans looking at this ruling a littl differently now that they have seen their losses pile up at week, after week christina greer, and barbara crater back with the so. christina, let's go big pictur her here despite all of the gop's rhetoric around abortion we sa this week that voter understand these issues in a much more personal, and deeper way. top democratic officials hav reportedly begun sketching out a 2024 campaign playbook tha leans heavily into these issues how much trouble is the gop in here, and how do democrats kee this momentum going? >> you know, ayman democrats need to double down on issue that matter to americans with the two out of thre americans in the public opinio will believe in a woman's righ to choose, they believe in marriage equity, these are issues that republicans have our themselves been hijacked b the most radical wing of their party, that donald trump win of the party now, we have to
9:52 pm
remember, rebecca tracer had a brilliant piece in new yor magazine that just laid this all out, that americans do car about a woman's right to choose, and we keep using the incorrec terms of pro-life. the republican party is no pro-life, they don't believe i supporting children an families, they clearly don't care about gun issues that are destroying communities and families they don't believe in health and families once they have child, they don't believe in having a social safety net they absolutely are not th party for pro-life, and that i not even the conversation we should be having it is a conversation about does a woman have a right to autonomy over her own body so is it a pro-choice, o antichoice, we need to also be explicit with the language w are using. we are seeing, more and more democrats using that prope language to make sure voters know that this, these ar issues about, can a woman, a grown woman, make her ow decisions without government intervention i think if democrats doubled down on these issues tha clearly are resonating, no with democratic voters independent voters, leanin republicans, and also some moderate publicans it's not just democrats who ar
9:53 pm
having sex, and it's not jus democrats who need abortions whether for medical reasons, o other, for a host of reasons so if they stay the course let's be clear, if it weren' for new york democrats was still control for congress the new yorkers that sort of lost it for the democrats, i'm well aware of that, we can tal about that on another show but you know, those four seats were in my state and so, we clearly know th democrats are on the right path, they just need to keep doublin down on gun control, on a woma 's right to choose, on marriag equity, on issues that reall actually bring us together and help support the democrati republic >> barbara, how do you see the next few days playingout legally over this medication abortion ruling from texas will we see more legal challenges, and ho consequential could this cas be in that it sets a precedent for other lawsuits against fda approved drugs >> all of the above. i think, first the has already
9:54 pm
filed appeal texas lawsuit wit the fifth circuit court of appeals. we also have that case out o washington that is hanging around that had a differen outcome than in texas, and s together i think they create a little bit of chaos about what the current status is of the availability of mifepristone but even the judge in texas ha stayed his ruling for seve days to give the parties the opportunities to file that appeal i imagine that as that appea is pending and the fifth circuit court of appeals, th drug will remain available i the meantime, typically th status quo is preserved. if that is the fifth circuit, very conservative circuit cour of appeals, if they affirm homage in this case will go to the supreme court. but the issue you raise is, very significant one the legality of this medical abortion drug alone is a ver significant issue. but if a judge can overrule th decision of the fda, the agenc that is given th responsibility of approvin

drugs in this country, the that really changes the whol calculus for drug recourse drug makers rely on that fda approval, when they invest i the research, development, and distribution sales, and al kinds of things with drugs the idea that a judge coul come in and second guess that think, it's just untenable even if judges who are looking at this on appeal don't like the medication abortio decision, i think it is goin to be very difficult for the to say, and a judge can just overturn the saying of the fda because they just don't like the drug, so i am cautiously optimistic that on appeal we will see a change in thi ruling >> and you see to some extent, christina, that republicans, broadly speaking, they are not embracing this decision. not a lot of people have com out in support of the, republican officials i'm talking about in congress, because they know abortion has now become a energizing factor a motivating factor fo democrats, and it seems they are now running away from this

issue. >> right, and we now see republicans saying well, you know let's just, women don't really care about that let's talk about other things. we've got the economy, and other issues a woman's right to choos actually is an economic issue, if you cannot force a woman to come to terms of the child, no cover any social safety net fo the next 18 plus years, so w can always lead to a financial issue. i think we are definitel seeing republicans wanting t talk about anything other than abortion, you know, obviousl gun control is another issue that we are going to try and run away from, and it is reall important that democrats t stay the course, and make sure voters know that this is a party that is trying to take away basic rights. and we have fought many many decades for, and the republica party was to rollback so man issues of progress that we'v had over the last few decades. >> i was gonna say has bee wikler said earlier, the republican set the bear trap and then they stepped into i and now they are stuck in. it christina, barbara, always
